I made this today for my daughter who is visiting again! It was outstanding!! My omnivore daughter said , "This is delicious!! Is this Jill's recipe?" To which I responded yes.😃 She could not believe that there was no oil or salt (I did use the miso) in it and said it was definitely a keeper! I tweaked it a bit and put in some of Nick's (of Local Spicery) pepperoni spice but I'm sure it is fabulous just as Jill created it! The okra really does make it! What a win, Jill!! Yet again!! You are our kitchen angel😇Thank you so much!❤❤❤👏

Hi Jill, thanks so much for the recipe. I made it tonight for dinner and I loved it. I don’t care for okra, so I substituted asparagus and it was delicious. Going to be perfect for the cold spell coming up! Thanks again!!

Wow I somehow landed in this channel and this recipe popped up and I am so happy I did. I always wanted to eat gumbo but I am a vegetarian and never found a place selling a meatless version. Thank you for sharing this recipe, I am definitely making it. Looks easy to make and delicious !
Can I use fresh okra? I get those easily in Indian grocery stores here as we do cook okra in Indian cuisine a lot

Will be making this 🙂The word “gumbo” which comes from the West African word “ki ngombo” for “okra”. West Africans used okra as a thickener in their version of the dish.

I think that some untoasted walnuts would probably be a good textural element, they soften up a bit when cooking but still have some bite, since not everyone has access to soy curls and some more fat always elevates a vegetable dish

Hi Fiona I found frozen okra in Sainsburys, but perhaps not all their branches stock it.

Skip the okra….overrated and tends to get slimy unless flash fried or deep fried. My mom made stewed fresh okra growing up…..couldn’t stand it then. The texture throws me off.
I’d substitute with a fresh roasted jalapeño or pickled Fresno.

not sure if you saw my second comment......I suggest using a dry white flour roux (baked at 400ºF in a covered casserole, until dark brown) in place of the arrowroot.
