  • Bandsaw restoration (from junk to useful tool):
Skill Level: Easy | Time needed: ~1 day
In this video I take you through the restoration of my 3 wheel bandsaw, a Burgess BK3 Plus, this is very similar to the Burgess BBS20, this saw is about 40 years old and was in terrible condition when I received it and I wasn't sure I'd keep it in my workshop, but having set it up properly, cleaned it and replaced the failing parts and 3D printed some bits I've got it back up to a good working order, it seems to cut straight and true so will become a valuable machine tool in my wood workshop.
This saw - or one very similar - was also produced by Record Power Tools and similar designs can be found by Clarke, Rexon, Craftsman, Powerline (who I think took over the Burgess line - at least they have the same model numbers), Delta etc.
The plastic parts had perished so I designed and 3D printed new ones, on my Crality CR10S 3D Printer using PLA, modernising and updating the saw.
They should also fit the Burgess BBS-20, Powerline BBS-20 and others
    Blade Guard
    Tracking Knob
    Blade guide knobs (x2)
    Blade tensioning knob
    Zero clearance insert
    Fence knob
I also replaced the clips that hold the front plate in place with 'nut and bolt' knobs in the same style as the other knobs so that it all looks consistent - these are a much better solution than the clips it came with.
Finally I swapped one of the worn pulleys, set-up the tracking correctly, made the mitre gauge fit and fixed the wobbly bed.
Links to all the 3D parts can be found here on thingiverse. www.thingivers...
The bandsaw is now thoroughly updated, keep a look out for some new mods/updates coming to this saw soon!

Thanks, very informative with straightforward 'fixes'. Just been given one of these and I'd like to see it back in action. Mine's looking a bit tired but with your instructive video, I think I can make it a viable option in the workshop again. Thanks again, cheers Simone

It was a fabulous design originally. I had the BBS20 in the 70's and then last year bought a broken BK3 Plus from a garage sale as an impulse buy. It didn't work they said. Five minutes work and some WD40 aligned the blade and although it could do with lots of attention and the right blade it cut 70mm thick tenons in good quality pine just like that.

Good job on the bandsaw there and impressive work with the 3D printer to replace the worn & tatty parts... 👏🏻
Looks like you now have a really useful and smart looking restored tool for your workshop, envious I am... 👍🏻

Thanks, I now use it constantly, it is so much nicer than the other saws being quieter and dust free.

Hi, what are the blade guides made of and how do you set them up ? I've got an old bansaw (black&decker) from my granddad and the guides seem to be some sort of plastic, but they are worn and when sawing you have to go a bit on an angle to get a straight cut. Thank you.

Bart, on my saw they are a hardwood Dowel, but I've also read that they did use brass. The veering to one side is almost certainly a blunt blade, if you use a fence they can put a little extra force on the teeth on one side resulting in what you are experiencing.

@@DIYTinkerer Thanks. The blade happen to brake, so I ordered a new one. I also found a good video for setting up bandsaws (Alex Snodgrass). ua-cam.com/video/wGbZqWac0jU/v-deo.html
I'll let you know if it's solved with the new blade (if I don't forget).

@@DIYTinkerer The new blade is on and it seems to cut straight now, thanks! The blade does seem to wobble a bit no matter how hard I set the tension, before setting the guides. A bit like a resonating guitar string. So I just set the standard tension and set the guides as close as possible. The blade stays cold after a large cut, so I guess it's allright.

very impressive cut result and fine job overall with the refurb :)
i've just managed to break my drive wheel on my BK3 Plus :( so now in the process of trying to obtain a replacement, which for a 40+ yr old machine is currently proving difficult to say the least :(
It's a great machine and fits in perfectly in the space i have. don't have the height for a 2 wheel unit othewise i'd just get a complete new machine.

Thanks, really sorry to hear about your drive wheel, have you looked at this site altrish.co.uk/2020/10/30/burgess-bk3-replacement-blade-wheel-incorporating-the-high-speed-option/ might give you some ideas. For something that sat in a corner gathering dust for a few years I find myself using it all the time now, especially since I added dust collection (there's a video on that), good luck with the repair.

@@DIYTinkerer thanks for the link - i'm actually in touch with Alan on that site :) so fingers crossed can get something sorted.
They are a great little machine, i've used mine a fair bit since having it, gutted i managed to break the splined bit whilst upgrading the centre bushing on it due to my original one becoming conical in shape inside causing wheel to wobble and lose track and blade to keep coming off - doh! :)
I'll take a look at the dust collection vid - i've been wondering best way to do that as it comes out of every little gap/hole in the machine - lol

@@DIYTinkerer quick update for you - i got in touch with Alan at the above site - and a couple of weeks later i had my original one repaired and a new drive wheel made from Delrin arrive through the post. During this time i also managed to obtain another 2nd hand BK3 Plus, so i now have two fully working BK3 Plus bandsaws. Each with a different blade in :) - well impressed with the work Alan did - he's currently working on an improved blade guide setup that you may be interested in :)

Hi, congratulations on a great restoration. I’ve got one of these as well. Unfortunately the on/off switch is missing, along with the plastic part that holds it and screws onto the back part of the body. Is there any way you could make a 3D printed copy of it? Obviously I’d be happy to pay. If you could let me know a price I’d be thrilled.

    • @DIYTinkerer

Hi Seth, sorry to hear about your bandsaw. The plastic box might be 3D printable but my experience of 3D printing is you can easily go through a dozen designs before you get it right and I simply don't have the time to do that. I'd be happy to provide pictures and dimensions if you email me DIYTinkerer @ btinternet.com
Looking at the part, I think there might be some other approaches that might work.
      1. You could wire and mount the switch externally and just blank off the hole.
      2. You could fashion a bracket for a new switch out of aluminium and mount to the same fixing holes the plastic box uses - you would need to be careful to heat-shrink all the connections and fix the mains terminal block to the back so it can't move but that looks doable to me and would look original - it would also allow you to source any suitable switch - rather than trying to source one with the same dimensions as the original
Hope that gives you some ideas and sorry I don't have the time to do it for you.

Hi, I have this exact machine. I just got into woodworking. I'd be happy to pay you if you could send me some of all the plastic knobs etc that you 3d printed!

Also, my saw is slow 😭 I don't know how to fix this! I'm a complete beginner. No idea how to even adjust the tension on this machine. I can just about change a blade 😂

    • @DIYTinkerer
      @DIYTinkerer  2 роки тому

@@sarahorror My experience with the machine is it is a little low on torque ( turning force) and because the wheels are plastic it relies wholly on the motor, if the blade strugles to move then it is likely that the blade guides and bearings are adjusted incorrectly, check that the guides on the side of the blade are close but not touching the blade, also check that the bearing at the back of the blade is not touching ( ideally they shouldn't move when the machine is on but not cutting) its also worth checking the bearings are not clogged with saw dust, if they are you probably need new bearings but might be able to save them by cleaning them in white spirit and spinning them to try and remove the dust and sap. Remember also there are blade guides below the bed as well 😀. Lastly check the blade tension isn't so tight that its slowing the motor down. There's a manual that might help with the above here www.manualslib.com/manual/1391199/Burgess-Bk3.html#manual let me know how you get on.
