Welcome to my channel.
I’m a retired six sigma IT consultant, but don’t let that put you off, my family never understood what I did for a living so I don’t expect you to either - and I promise to not mention it again!
Like many people at working age my interests took a back seat and now I’m retired I’m free to explore them and learn the skills needed to be successful at them. This channel is about my journey and I’d love you to share it with me, either as a sage I can listen to and learn from through the comments or someone not so far along the road that I can pass what I’ve learnt onto.
I’m not sure how it will turn out but you are welcome to find out with me.

What PVA did you use.
thank you, you are a star man! Most of people in comments dont care about true 90, they build either a stud wall or little monster not true woodworking anyway.
Great video
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it 😊
I have an Axminster extractor turning up Monday.. just ordered the switch. Thanks for the very informative video.. I will also be wall mounting the unit, so will have to make a bracket like you have!
Glad I could help, the Mens shed I volunteer at has just ordered one too, I'll be doing a similar mod on that one
Like the video. Can't wait to see what you next.
Thanks Roger, I've a few things planned 😉
Great initial thoughts and first run. Seems like a great product.👍
Thanks, seems good, I now understand the basics, just need to get some experience 😀
The real irony is calling it an anti slip rail, it's the opposite, it's the glide rail and is supposed to make the saw slip :) I didn't have any of those track issues but did have different ones. The saw seemed to lack power, or the blade sharpness. I found it really struggled with thicker cuts and if trying to cut furring strips the blade would be bent out rather than slice the wood on the thin ends. A bit dangerous to be honest. And the splinter guards are poor, brittle and end up rough and hard to use as an accurate line.
Thanks for the feedback and your views on the saw. 😀
Genius, just bought my first bench (Workmate 301) and found this video very useful and full of great ideas!
Great to hear! Glad it was useful, I have a fair few Workmate videos, so be sure to subscribe 👍🏻
Your laser seems pretty useful. Looking forward to seeing how you get to grips with its capabilities and how you learn to use the respective software... Thanks for posting; helpful and informative as always!
Thanks, I'm excited to see what it can do
The telescope that had the Herschel wedge what did you put in front of the primary lens anything?how does it affect the glass when it heats up?I have both an apochromat and an achromat and don't want to ruin the glass or coatings, thank you.
Thanks for the question. You are right to consider this, but as with all astronomy, the answer is a little complex. The Baader Herschel Wedge I use is rated up to 5" apature, so it doesn't need any additional filtering in front of the scope to protect the equipment at focus. The lens on a traditional refractor is at the front of the telescope, so the light going through the lens is not concentrated and thus doesn't heat up those elements, but this may not be the case if your scope has a fancy design, with optics part way down the tube (some field flattened apos do this) so assuming it's a traditional refractor, what you really have to ask is, "are the coating used on the scope stable in direct sunlight?" This, however, might not be something easily found out. I image in narrowband, so can get away with a very cheap achromatic scope as all chromatic aberration is eliminated by the NB filter. and I get stunning results (published many times in the BAA journal) it was a 3rd hand telescope so, I don't know if it even has coatings:-) ! But if I could afford a 5" apo, I wouldn't use it on the Sun, as I doubt it would provide much advantage over my el-cheapo telescope and I would be worrying about the coatings in direct sunlight. You might get a better answer if you contacted either the solar section or imaging and instruments section of the BAA, but I suspect you will get a similar answer... for reference my scope is a 20+ year old Meade LX55 5" Doublet, with terrible colour correction. I hope this helps, be careful solar observing.
Lovely video- I was just gifted a Workmate. The community around modding them is inspiring.
Hi, thanks for the comment, I'm glad you liked the video. Workmates have a special kind of appeal :-)
Thanks, I got the same 1 love the springs good job
No problem 👍glad the video was useful
Smart!
Glad you liked it
Keep it up very good
Thanks
Nice 👍 ❤
Thank you! Cheers!
I like the aesthetic. Looks like a fun project, and useful too.
Glad you like it! I'm very pleased how it turned out, thanks for watching 👀 😀
Hey guy, this is a great video and you're doing great stuff! You have pretty bad P-Pops in your voice which is kinda distracting. Usually that's fixed with a foam sleave over your microphone.
Sorry about that, thanks for the tip, I'll get that fixed for future videos ! 😀
Great overlap of electronics and woodworking.
Many thanks! Glad you liked it. 👍🏻
Great build - with lots of useful guidance throughout. Thanks for posting. Those ESP 32s are really useful and pretty cheap. I've got as far as installing WLED on one to control an LED strip and found it very satisfying. I wonder if your LED display is bright enough to shine through a very thin veneer without any holes in it? I guess it would have to be glued to a piece of clear plastic to make it strong enough to support the LEDS...
Thanks for the nice comments. I did try using a thin veneer but it just didn't work. The esp32 I used was £6 Inc postage! This is the first project that I've used an esp32 on, previous projects have used Arduinos.
Excellent video as always. A really interesting build and great results. Keep up the good work.
Thanks glad you liked it
Such a clever build and what a lovely little clock. I feel I want to try and build one for myself, but these circuit boards worry me. I know exactly what you meant when you said that you wondered if your audience would enjoy your videos, I go through exactly the same thoughts each time I upload a video. Sometimes I even wonder why I do it, but then I get some really lovely comments that make me want to do another one. Keep up the great work, I'm a big fan Johnny
Thanks, that means a lot. Glad you like the videos, I'll checkout your channel 😀
Good deal
Yea:-)
Very interesting. It's a lot of work. For me a clear advantage of track saws is dust collection, so I should probably buy something else.
If dust, noise, precision, and a clean cut are important to you , then that is probably the right decision 😀
Oòooooh boy that's a nice one.
I've not actually taken it out of the box yet, been working on another video (Artdeco inspired), but hopefully it's a keeper, expect to see some videos with it soon. 😀
Nice one. You'll enjoy that, I've got the same one.
Laser engraving / cutting is a completely new area for me so I have a lot to learn!
Can’t wait to see future projects with this.
Thanks, keep watching to see what I do :-)
Ooooh, so that's why you tidied up the workshop ; ) !
well, no, it all sort of came together all of a sudden, but having a tidy workshop did help! I don't really know where I'm going to store it yet!
Thanks Simon, I wish my old Elektra was as easy !
Yea, this saw is as easy as I think its possible to make it!
Excellent advice take care of your tools they’ll take care of you.
Absolutely, we'll said.
Much respect for the honest review! I think some of the 1st vids I watched of ppl reviewing this product might have been sponsored ones, since they were very conservative with the cons of the saw. I might even buy it at the end but I would like to do my homework beforehand.
Thanks, I think those 'unbiased' reviews you refer to are all sponsored in that they are given the kit free, this probably leads to unconscious bias. For instance, it is harder to judge if it is value for money when you don't actually part with any money. I try to think of them more as product feature videos.
video is amazing id love to see what it can do maybe in another video showing us all the cool stuff it can do. much love
Thanks for the idea!
Lovely shop voyeurism! As for the riving knife, I made my own since the factory one was bent. Just traced the contour onto 1,5 sheet metal, and redid the holes for the dust extraction cover. But it's still hard to get out. Maybe some thumb screws as you did with the side panel? I have my knife set slightly below the top of the blade so I don't have to remove it that often. Subbing for more!
Yea, I've often thought about reducing the height of the riving knife, I'll do it one day....
I'm a little north of you (judging by the accent at least...!) and I just did my workshop last weekend, already caught my bandsaw table threatening to rust on me - I blame all the rain we had aftern the cold snap, and the workshop isn't _super_ dry thanks to a crap garage door. Good video. We really do need a national holiday for tool maintenance 😂
That gets my vote 😀
Had a chuckle at using your wife's top Ha Ha,
I don't think she will be chuckling! 😉
Thanks Simon a timely reminder, my workshop is perishing in winter and it's a busy time of year for other reasons so a good time for a little machine tool tlc ! I'm sure your wife will never notice the faint whiff of WD40 & Machine wax ! 😉
LOL, glad you enjoyed it 😀
Excellent video as always. It is easy to overlook this bit of maintenance and housekeeping, I will be giving my shed tools a spruce up soon. Keep up the good work.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for letting me know you liked the video 😀
Reminds me doing the same..
I.m glad I gave you a little reminder :-)
hey simon! you already know i'm a big fan of this work! may i offer some unsolicited input? explain what a bench hook/or whatever mod is and the actual effective use/reason for it. its to the point now where i watch all of your mods blindly but other channels I wouldn't have watched this. 1. i misunderstood what a hook was atleast i don't call a hook what you are here 2. bc of your take on it, i absolutely found new use cases I hadn't considered. but if you say upfront in the video, i'd be more likely to stick around and not bail on it. if you get straight into building, you're asking someone to also go build blindly. tell me why I'm building this first and i can feel confident and even do a better job if i understood that as I can modify things as I can according to my own custom setup. great stuff as always! cheers!
Thanks for the thoughtful comments and taking the time to collate and make them 😀 I'll have to have a think about how I do this. BTW what do you call a bench hook?
Do you do any work in the winter time ?
Hi, yes I do, but often it is too cold or at least cold enough to dissuade me from spending too long out there
I inherited my one from my dad a number of years ago, and it's gone through a few blades in its time, but the issue I will have shortly in the lower blade guide. The cast bracket is broken, and the only thing that holds it together is the roll pin which goes right through the bracket, but this has some serious wear and I fear it's only a matter of time. I'm trying to locate a new one but this is proving difficult. Nice video, good to see it being saved from scrap.😀
Thanks, good luck finding the part you are after.
Use a longer M6 adjusting screw, drill all the way the bottom plate, use some nuts and washers and that;s it. You're welcome!
Thanks for the tip
Amplifier maybe thx for sharing Keep building
Thanks for the idea, sounds like a good one!
