The Zoom H1n is a powerfull portable recorder with a broad set of functionalities and exelelent buildt in microphones. Is the Zoom H1n the best handheldt recorder at its price in 2022?
At under 100 dollars, this is regardless of its shortcomings a VERY good option for everyone starting out with serious audiowork, professionals in need of a sound effect-recorder, ambiance recorder, or as a backup device.

I have used one for many years and it is excellent for an amateur like me. One thing it can be used for is as an amplifier.
Fix for rattling noise: take a foam earbud fluffy cover, cut a very thin strip and insert it along the top or bottom of the volume rocker. Poke it in with a thin sharp blade. It will stay nicely in the cavity and totally cure the rattle. You'll need to do the same with the trash/delete button. These are the only buttons that have the rattle and this solution is so good it might have been something they did in the factory. Black coloured foam will not be visible, or it will look factory made on a white edition. Very smart looking and feeling too.

I use a Boya BY-C03 Anti Shock Mount for my Zoom H1n. No more worrying about the thread of the screw-hole, and it works great for dampening hand movement noise while handling the microphone.
That looks like a very good investment for enhancing the h1n. Do you use it for handheld work as well?
This is an excellent recorder with good quality sound. Indeed it feels like a plastic toy, but the sound quality cancels the "cheap" feeling.
I use it with a pair of Eneloop Pro NiMH rechargeable batteries.
For the money you pay for, it's the best in my opinion.
Yeah, I havent seen anything to this date that really can compete in terms of the its feature set. And as long as it is not used as a day-to-day field, recorder, I thing most people will be happy for it, even those considering the H4n or similar unless they need the XLR-connection.

Yeah, I think it is a quite good recorder for that. Not as good as the Zoom H4 or H6, but it will certainly do the job. Your room acustics might be more important than the exact device it self.
If you can mount your phone on a tripod or similar close to your guitar that could be the easiest and cheapest way to do recording.

Which is best in your opinion for field recording...the Tascam DR- 05X or zoom h1n?

I have auto record set to on at -24dB and pre record on as well. I can't get it to activate when talking loud enough to do so. I press the red record button thinking this would activate the auto record but all this does is activate regular recording. My goal is to record my dog whining while it is alone. Please explain in detail how to get my H1N to auto record as I'm needing it to.

I think this device needs USB type C, bigger batteries and that screw is useless for everyday attaching and detaching.

Only if you can find one using 3.5mm jack and plug into the mic port. But you will also need a mic that has its own powersource for phantom power.

No I it does not. I am on version 1.19 if it helps.
I have the same V 1.19 and never asked for time and date when connected to the USB source (while having batteries in).
Why have you taped it with blue tape?
Because the buttons were loose to such a degree they make audible sounds when moving the recorder while used handheld. Quite terrible if you do run and gun podcast interviews.
