Sickle Cell, Alcoholism, Drugs, Cigarettes, infidelity are all diseases. Each one cost a great price. Let's not be cruel in our remarks to each other. No one is perfect. It is my thanks to GOD and The Temptations for giving our society a significant amount of great music and entertainment. Cora Hudson Guice
Eddie's voice makes honey look abrasive. His voice has to be one of the smoothest, silkiest of all time. Eddie's sound was followed by Philip Bailey of EWF, followed by the lead on Stylistics had the best falsetto voices
I believe Little Anthony of Little Anthony and The Imperials,as well as the lead singer of The Delphonics, should be added to the list!( just sayin in my most humble opinion. )
Nice comments and great observations! I think you are spot on in your analysis. Eddie and Phillip had voices that were "out of this world" like from another planet. And while I'm not saying these two were just as good, I'm still inclined to include William Hart of the Delfonics and definitely Ted Mills of Blue Magic somewhere in between Eddie and Phillip Bailey? Again, neither can outdo Eddie or Phillip; but, Ted Mills' voice was also rather high and silky before it started diminishing in the 90's.
@@TheJwl7 so glad you said Ted Mills because he is definitely on my top 5 list along with Eddie Kendricks and Phillip Bailey. There are so many other great falsettos the other 2 on my list would be Russell Thompson from the Stylistics and the guy from Bloodstone (I don't know his name).
Folks Eddie could just flat out sing. Natural Falsetto Lead Background Ruffles and Flourishes. The Temps Fab Five brand of Black Male Smooth Style was one of the touchstones for boys like me. Thanks to whoever is putting these Temps on TV clips on UA-cam. What is plainly and painfully obvious is no group in the modern era could touch these guys LIVE.
No one could touch the original 5 and Dennis Edwards .. but I also gotta say Ollie woodson and Glenn Leonard and Damon Harris and Richard Street and Louis price were also good!!!❤😮😅😊
Eddie Kendricks really showed the versatility in his voice when he dropped down to singing tenor from his usual falsetto. Great voice. A lot of these so called singers could take notes.

I’m so late to the party, but may I add: Eddie had such mass appeal, it’s the reason his name still comes up in conversations today. I love This Used to be the Home of Johnny Mae (the lyrics and Eddie’s delivery). From “Mellow Mood,” “With These Hands” is another one of my favorites.
Actually Melvin was a basso profundo, the lowest bass range. He is still expected to go up and reach a C4, which is middle C. A bass-baritone is a higher bass singer, like Larry Graham. It has a lighter, more flexible quality to it. :The desired high note is F4 above middle C on the piano. I happen to be a bass-baritone aka basso cantante myself. Still watching in 2021. Stupid comments about Paul. In spite of sickle cell anemia and the tremendous amount of pain he must have been in, he held it down and did his thing. Loved him ❤ what a stand up guy.
This is what makes youtube so amazing! I am 41 today and have never seen this footage. My 8 yr old son is so obsessed with the temptations and we watch clips like this almost everyday!
Darckcloud73 that's the best my son knows there routines in preschool he did the whole ed Sullivan performance at 3yrs old. I'm forty and my dad played all there songs daily lol I love them!
Paul Williams suffered from Sickle Cell Anemia, which is a very painful. He needed oxygen after every performance. Before people start judging educate yourself. During Paul tenure with the Temptation medical options for people with Sickle cell Anemia was very limited.
Preach, Sister! Paul wasn't messing up the choreography. Don't equate everything you've read about him, or seen in the movie, and assume, you're going to see some indication of that in later performances. There's a big difference between a short medley of songs, and a full concert tour performance. As far as his being in low lighting here, that would be plausible if not for the fact that the lighting was turned up for the majority of the performance. Why turn it down in the middle of the song? Stop rehashing the drunk scene from the movie. Those incidents reported were during some concert dates. Also, I'm sure Paul had enough presence of mind to at least be functional during a national television broadcast. He loved performing, and while suffering from sickle cell anemia, was often in a lot of physical pain in his feet and joints, which may have slowed his precision at times, not to mention the havoc it was wreaking on his lungs. It's a miracle he was able to perform as long as he did. He was still smooth, though.

You will see the same pain in Melvin Franklin years later (check out the Soul To Soul video...you'll see Melvin labor to do his choreography despite looking genuinely happy).
What a tour de force! Berry Gordy was so wise to showcase black excellence through constant code-switching. None of the white bands of the 60's had any level of this versatility and elan. It helps that the Motown groups didn't also play instruments so they could focus on such a stimulating visual presentation through dance to accompany their incredible vocals. Motown was really next level and defined entertainment during that era.
I had no idea Paul Williams suffered from Sickle Anemia, the movie depicted only the fact he drank a lot, what deception. I am sad to know he suffered like that, what a talented man he was. One of my niece died from this disease, right now I have two other nieces fighting this disease.
While the drinking didn't help, the sickle cell anemia was wreaking havoc on his lungs, his joints, and other organs. Paul was quoted as saying that his feet would often hurt. When a person suffers recurring sickle cell crises the pain is excruciating, often requiring a blood transfusion, because the elingated cells collect in the joints, and organs. Years ago the life expectancy of someone with the disease was 30 years old. My close friend has had it since birth. He is now 54. Thank God for medical advancements.
There will never ever be another group of tall talented sexy ass black men like these in this world today . it is not about talent in this era ,I do not understand how these kids can even enjoy the crap that is shoved down thier throats .In the disguise of entertainment. God please allow this terrible trend of the 21st century to cease .And lets bring back real music like the tall, talented TEMPTATIONS was blessed with..
This is so different for The Temptations. This song shows the versatility of these talented men. They could sing and had a fantastic stage presence. Not many artists can sing and dance so well together. Some can sing, but can't dance. Others can't do anything but dance, and need artificial background to make their voices sound good. But all of the Temps had talent on their own. They could even sing well without music. Just the rhythm, their vocals, and a few dance steps.
I'm 50+ and I remember watching this on TV with my older sisters who I call, "The Original Groupies of The Temptations". They have pictures with the Temps and on one occasion they performed in/near our town, after the show, Eddie Kendricks brother stayed the night at our home. Then Eddie came into our home the next morning to pick him up!!!
@MsLady328 Eddie's brother only stayed over that one night. He slept in the room that was formerly by brother's room. (My brother was no longer living with us because he was married.) I definitely remember the next morning when he went in to our bathroom to get ready to get dressed. I remember that either my Mother or one of my sisters gave him a towel to use. After that, I remember him sitting in our dining room, sipping coffee. I believe my Mother had prepared him a small breakfast. But very shortly after that, he had to leave because Eddie kept calling and saying---they had "to go". I suppose this was maybe because The Temps had to get back on the road. I remember when he ultimately went outside to leave. I know at least one of my sisters, if not all of them, escorted him out. I didn't see much of what happened when they were outside. But, I think Eddie came to pick him up. I also think Eddie got out of the car and exchanged a few words with my sisters before they left. By the way, I thought I'd included Eddie's brother's name in my original post. But, since I don't see it, his name was "Carlton Kendricks"
@MsLady328 He was cute and there was a strong resemblance between he and Eddie. However, Eddie was still the "heartthrob" over him. But, he was still handsome. He certainly "was not unattractive". I think he may have been a bit shorter than Eddie, maybe by and inch or two
These beautiful-but-handsome-but-intelligent-but-strong men bringing their 60s and 70s goodness-and-lyrics-and-choreography before the camera into our homes ... especially milliseconds after that lyric of "IF I WERE A WEALTHY MAN" that then goeth (goes) into this explosive vocal cadenza of of a grand-finishing outro while they pull their final silhouetted-and-choreographed moves whilst the audience only begs for more ... seeing as the audience does not want the goodness to end !!! THE TEMPTATIONS ART JUST SO MOVINGLY BEAUTIFUL !!! Uncle loveth them and doth not apologise even whilst weeping in and at their handsome-beauty !!! (rhyme) ... !!! And art we noting their mellow Motown poses and handsome-ness as they deliver the above line ??? Art we all seeing, sensing and feeling dear Berry-of-Gordy invisibly somewhere in and amongst these five gents ??? Dear publisher 'Stan G' ... only kisses and hugs unto thee ... provided thou art comfortable with it ... otherwise just imagine all that wast (was) given wast (was) a platonic and 'appropriately-distanced' handshake with an 'emotionless face' !!! And now, Uncle physically-and-spiritually returneth (returns) unto his Isaac Hayes whom he "Standeth Accused Of Loving Too Much" ... and yeah, the 'allegation' is only true !!! Uncle is 'guilty' !!! BUT UNCLE WANTETH NOT ANY SMART-ALEC COMMENTS WHEN MERE SILENCE WILT SUFFICE !!! THANK YOU !!!
@@JENEAN32 Exactly, also "May I Have This Dance" with the Temptations. He sang in his natural voice on "If You Let Me". I always direct people to the song "...Johnny Mae", to settle the argument when people believe that Al Bryant is singing the lead, because they are not familiar with Eddie's natural voice. The movie depicted Al as one of the lead singers, which was not the case. Check it Out! Ciao!!!
they needed too keep David Ruffin and they should have called the group David Ruffin and the Temptations. that what David wanted and that's why he left the Temptations that was a huge lost for them in my book .
I did not know Paul Williams suffered from Sicke Cell Anemia, one of my niece died from this disease, right now I have two other nieces struggling to with this disease.
My heart went out to Mr. Paul Williams from 8:20-8:40. That was hard to watch. They definitely went through some struggles being GREAT. On a lighter note I’m here for Mr. Franklin with that deep roar and Mr. Kendricks everything 👀👀
Paul did the choreography for the Temptations. Cholly Atkin, assisted and provided the routines for the other acts on the Motown, Tamla, Gordy Records And Soul Records.
Actually it was a trade off. Paul set the blueprint for group choreography, however, his role was diminished somewhat with the arrival if Cholly Atkins. Paul is also responsible for the Supremes' trademark extended hand gesture during performances of "Stop In The Name Of Love". Check it Out! Ciao!!!
Looks like they were on one of those 1960s and 70s variety shows. Complete with recorded Applause. It's already been said, but I'll say it again... These were amazing times and this was an amazing group. I think Dennis did one hell of a job, but there was nothing like the "classic" 5 Temptations. David, Paul, Otis, Eddie and Melvin.
Today with all its technology I still wouldnt trade the times I came up.I met Eddie at the Apollo as well as the classic 5 and I have never gotten over those times. Eddie had an earthy spirit and was a star by birth, you know what I mean, the Temps made him a Universal star yet he was a star anyway, all 5 of them were.
Yes...I have to agree...Paul looks and acts very compromised as far as his health is concerned...God bless his precious soul. This is hard to watch...it truly is.
@Sharon Green Paul was not being hidden in dim lighting. If you see this entire performance, it is only briefly at the beginning of that petformance. That was just the way the stage lighting was. Don't believe everything from that movie. The general public never knew about Paul's alcoholism, and the stage lighting was never turned down. The only cited case by Otis was during a live, non televised performance in New Jersey. Even then the lighting wasn't altered. Check it Out! Ciao!!!
That's why Paul leaned on Dennis Edwards shoulders all the time... i heard sickle cell is a tough disease to live with. I love how Dennis had Paul Williams Jr in his group years later.. Dennis probably was really nice snd thoughtful of Paul during those years.
since I'm too young to have actually experienced the Temptations music during their prime I felt like researching a bit about their amazingness and got so confused :p So many different groups members... But I must say it was Eddie's voice that made me want to look them up to start with. I had to know the name of the owner of that beautiful voice :)
@MsLady328 Let's not forget the vocal talent, and group dynamic of original lead singer, and choreographer, the late great Paul Williams. Check it Out! Ciao!!!

Did anyone catch that Paul was doing the choreography that Dennis Edwards was during. That leads me to believe that he was originally supposed to be in the front. Poor baby was suffering.
Poor Paul, he's usally the best dancer but his sickness made him all off. Either way they still sounded and looked freakin awesome!!RIP Paul, Eddie, and Melvin
It's called "creative license", with the screenwriters of the mini-series over dramatize the story. Paul's sickle cell was causing him too many frequent pain episodes. He left the group on physician's advise, not because he was "kicked out."
Paul was a professional. Though it was known years before the movie came out, the movie seemed to shed light on it for a new generation of fans. However, Paul was not falling down drunk, like some would like to believe. The movie exagerated several details, and failed to depict Paul's more serious health problem, which led to his leaving the Temptations, which was sickle cell anemia. It is a fact not known to all. Melvin Franklin also mentioned it in an interview years ago. I've explained it many times, but if you care to hear. I will elaborate. Even the facts surrounding Paul's death indicated signs of foul play, despite how the movie portrayed it. Check it Out! Ciao!!!

Blue can really hit those low notes
🌬️💨😇💫📀 **EDDIE KENDRICKS ***THE FALSETTO VOICE** A GOD GIVING GIVING GIFT😇~AMEN~😇💫📀🤗☺️✌️☀️~AMEN~😉✌️🚙💨💦
RABBAH Great Story. Was Eddie K gorgeous in real life?
And all true. Absolutely! Unmistakably!
I think he may have been a bit shorter than Eddie, maybe by and inch or two
@@dolly-gq9lr Heck's yeah!!! Don't you see how beautiful he was?
This is REAL MUSIC!!! LOVE IT!!! :)
Sharing and spreading the joy that these guys brought to the table.
All their music was real and wonderful because it was written by great song writer's and sung by these amazing voices.
When you said Pretty Boy--you said it right!!!
The boys is SANGING.
Only the Temps could outshine the original fiddler on the roof soundtrack 🎻
Uncle is watching them together with his Isaac Hayes-ness ... Both Uncle and his Isaac are enjoying them and do NOT wisheth (wish)to be disturbed !!!
I MEAN, DO WE SEE HOW THEY RESEMBLETH THIS OH-SO-SEXY QUINTET OF OOMPAH LOOMPAH MEN FROM CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY ... BUT ONLY SEXIER? ART WE DIGGING AND LOVING THEIR MAN-MUSE-NESS? ESPECIALLY WITH HOW THEY OPEN AND CLOSE THE WHOLE NUMBER AND ROUTINE WITH THAT HIPPIE-ESQUE, MELLOW-AND-SUBDUED AND SLIGHTLY 'TRIPPY-HIPPY' BEAT AND LYRIC OF "LORD YOU MADE THE LION AND THE LAMB" (as in "LION OF JUDAH AND LAMB OF GOD GOD" ... or "THE LION SHALT LIETH DOWN WITH THE LAMB") ... that could believably be being sung around a hippie-esque camp fire of late nineteen sixty whatever ... and something akin unto what 'The Undisputed Truth' would deliver ... (rhyme) ...
Love them all... Rest Well Temps
I had this album when it came out I played it all the time.
Eddie Kendricks is so cute and funny and I love him so much
He is very 'lovable' dear Bianca-of-Simmons ... as indeed they all are.
Best...group...ever.....PERIOD
Wow, Eddie K actually set the falsetto aside for a bit. Never heard him sing in his natural voice before
thewordkeeper If the link doesn't work just type The Temptations - My Pillow in the search box.
Ivydude131 he made and sang a song called "This Used to Be The Home Of Johnny Mae". it's in his natural voice and it's beautiful.
Ivydude131 you should listen to May I Have This Dance. He used his natural voice then ended in falsetto
Ivydude131, Eddie also sang lead in his natural voice on their big hit "Ball of Confusion."
Ciao!!!
THERE WERE SO GOOD THAT TECHNICALLY YOU HAVE ALL LEAD SINGERS IN ONE GROUP!!!#LEGENDS
Eddie really carried the group when David Ruffin left.
Ahhh Not Really
they needed too keep David Ruffin and they should have called the group David Ruffin and the Temptations. that what David wanted and that's why he left the Temptations that was a huge lost for them in my book
.
nina Randall if that was true they would have been flop he was on drugs and out of control David had to go
+360Warlock ! your right!!
Juanita Jordan-Joyner PLEASE,EDDIE THE TEMPTATIONS BEFORE DAVID.KNOW YOUR FACTS.
This is excellent footage of The Temptations.
I did not know Paul Williams suffered from Sicke Cell Anemia, one of my niece died from this disease, right now I have two other nieces struggling to with this disease.
Maybe your situation will turn for the better. Peace.
My heart goes out to you and your nieces
This is absolutely wonderful... never took the time to watch until now.
The bass guitar line on the opening and closing, though!!!
My heart went out to Mr. Paul Williams from 8:20-8:40. That was hard to watch. They definitely went through some struggles being GREAT. On a lighter note I’m here for Mr. Franklin with that deep roar and Mr. Kendricks everything 👀👀
Paul looked ok to me 🤔
nickwakefield91 just ok? Alright.
I just love that I love that all you go Temptations
Paul did the choreography for the Temptations. Cholly Atkin, assisted and provided the routines for the other acts on the Motown, Tamla, Gordy Records And Soul Records.
Actually it was a trade off. Paul set the blueprint for group choreography, however, his role was diminished somewhat with the arrival if Cholly Atkins. Paul is also responsible for the Supremes' trademark extended hand gesture during performances of "Stop In The Name Of Love". Check it Out! Ciao!!!
Eddie, you were amazing.
He certainly was pretty!! Love me some Eddie Kendrick and have since my mother turned me onto the Temptations at the age of 10 years old.
Looks like they were on one of those 1960s and 70s variety shows. Complete with recorded Applause. It's already been said, but I'll say it again... These were amazing times and this was an amazing group.
I think Dennis did one hell of a job, but there was nothing like the "classic"
5 Temptations. David, Paul, Otis, Eddie and Melvin.
This was their show with Diana Ross and The Supremes "Gettin' It Together On Broadway".
As you can see it was televised and it was also an album for a record player!
i Love Eddie
Thank you never saw this before ❤
Look at that power! Style! Presence!
This helped made my day. PRETTY BOY EDDIE, you got that right. THANK YOU Stangilmer.
love love love Eddie Kendricks and David Ruffin!!! legendary singer's musician's love the temptations there best to ever do it
Thanks for sharing, first time seeing this or hearing the first song, a real thrill!
Yes I agree to all comments, I loved all of them but loved Eddie the most... RIP darling Eddie K 🌹🌹🌹🌷🌷🌷
I can't stop watching this classic of the Tempations 😃
Enjoy!
Stan G . Thank you for giving us this classic treasure . Groovvvvy, man ! 😉
Simply magnificent medley of a wonderful group great upload
Eddie Kendricks... Listen at his beautiful voice ,No question, God knew exactly what he was doing ,
Yes...I have to agree...Paul looks and acts very compromised as far as his health is concerned...God bless his precious soul.
Ciao!!!
They were magnificient and way before their time!
I thought I had seen everything tv show the Temps were on. I don't remember this, but I LOVE IT! Thanks for posting!
Ain't nobody comin to see you Otis!
-David Ruffin
I would have just come to see him. He was handsome. 😂
That's why Paul leaned on Dennis Edwards shoulders all the time... i heard sickle cell is a tough disease to live with.
I love how Dennis had Paul Williams Jr in his group years later.. Dennis probably was really nice snd thoughtful of Paul during those years.
Wed November 12,1969 (NBC)
since I'm too young to have actually experienced the Temptations music during their prime I felt like researching a bit about their amazingness and got so confused :p So many different groups members...
Ciao!!!
@MsLady328 Let's not forget the vocal talent, and soulful dynamic of original lead singer, and choreographer, the late, great Paul Williams. Check it Out! Ciao!!!
Melvin was mad happy lol
He LOVED being a Temptation. He sacrificed himself to help make the group great. RIP.
Through both his ultra-deep voice and 'popping' eyes !!! Total agreement and chuckles unto relax96 !!!
Amen to that, where has all the talent gone?No great media exposure, unless
you have been on X factor !!!
this is a truely awsome treasure

Bass man is gettin into this!
Did anyone catch that Paul was doing the choreography that Dennis Edwards was during. That leads me to believe that he was originally supposed to be in the front. Poor baby was suffering.
Poor Paul, he's usally the best dancer but his sickness made him all off. Either way they still sounded and looked freakin awesome!!RIP Paul, Eddie, and Melvin
what sickness not being funny he was a heavy drinker and they kicked him out the group for awhile and later on he committed suicide
+nina randall Paul had sickle cell
Well you are funny because you only rely on a movie for your information. The man was very sick and in pain a lot of time. Dummy.
@mspinkytee i was just sitting here saying the same thing...somebody obviously watched the movie a few dozen times
It's called "creative license", with the screenwriters of the mini-series over dramatize the story. Paul's sickle cell was causing him too many frequent pain episodes. He left the group on physician's advise, not because he was "kicked out."
Now that was an awesome treat
Great Bass singers are so rare and underrated. Guys wanna be all pretty singing soft n shit
You sing whit the talent that God gave you
This hard❤️❤️❤️🔥🔥🔥...
This is a beautiful tape love it and saved it.😄
🎉excellent 😊
Watching this performance again sing blue go head tempts just have to say one more time
And if he was drunk, nobody ever noticed it, until the movie came out.
Ciao!!!
Seen him on ed Sullivan show you could tell he had been drinking
@@mauricecampbell9813 you couldn't tell nothing just stfu!
I’m with you on that. Nobody could tell that he was drunk
@@kechellbynum2656 can you tell when you're piccy 🥴 drunk
Rip David Ruffin, Eddie Kendricks, Dennis Edwards, Paul Williams, and Melvin Franklin
I would wear the hell out of those outfits! I love, love , love Blue! He sounds so good especially during the Sunrise, Sunset part and I love the way he dances! Eddie is sooooo fine and of course his singing is great!!!!!
I love Melvin he sooo animated lol
The greatest thing about MOTOWN acts others could join another group and fit right into that position.
love them
I enjoyed it
thank you, very nice.
