Love Nevermore. They used to be called Sanctuary. Check out their album called Into the Mirror Black! My favorite Nevermore album is called Politics of Ecstasy

just read in Wiki, that they changed their name, because the record company wanted them to jump on the "grunge-train"

Oh hell yea, one of my all time favorites. Immense sounds, incredible lyrics, wicked solos. And one of metal greatest lost vocalists. Love Nevermore, love Warrel Dane, love this album in a deep and pure way.
The first band I ever saw live and one of the first heavy bands I ever listened to. They opened my mind and my ears to what was being done outside of the mainstream.
Just thinking about it now. It might be my favourite album. It might be my favourite anything.. Ever..

Nice ... more Nevermore 🤘 they are one of the most underrated Bands in the late 90s and the first decade of the 2000s. I guess, musically there was nothing wrong, playing this interesting mix of different metal genres. I can imagine, the reason why they never became as popular as other bands, were their often "intellectual" lyrics, they blamed the state or the government (they called them pigs) for treating the people bad, for manipulating them, but they also blamed mankind for treating earth so bad ... great lyric line in Born : if nothing in this world will change, our children will inherit nothing ! how true 😒
Of their 7 studio albums I really like all very much, except for #1 and #7. On the first record they kind of were searching their future style. On album #7 you could feel, that after Warrel Dane's and Jeff Loomis' solo records there wasn't the harmony anymore to create new, great music together.
I saw them live in 2006 and they opened with Born. They played the same year in Wacken and there is an awesome video, when Warrel Dane tells the crowd "I want to see bodies in the air" and I promise, I've never seen so many people crowdsurf at the same time 😆 check in here in u t 👍
Later that year they recorded the great Live album/DVD - Year of the voyager - in Bochum/Germany ... why there ? I don't know 😂 3 of my iron cast guarantee selection are from this DVD, when Nevermore proved, what a fantastic live band they were.
After the 7th album they split up, and in 2017, Warrel Dane died in Rio de Janeiro, working on his 2nd solo album. Producer and musicians finally finished this album using the already recorded segments. It's not as good as his first solo album, but it's some kind of testament🤘
Now let's see, what part 2 has for us ...

I must of course thank you Rudi for bringing this band to my attention in the first place! Amazing sounding music - as far as being political and drawing attention to corruption and green issues, it never did any harm to RATM or Gojira!

2005 had so many great albums.
This and Opeth's Ghost Reveries were 2 of my favorites. Great songs and perfect production.
Performance and production were on the menu and they were delivered with a chef's kiss.
I welled up when I heard Born.
Nevermore never really got the recognition they deserved.
    And that's a crime.

    The drumming is superb.

Silliness aside this band has never really been on my radar, but I will give them a chance with this!! I will say the first track gave me some serious operatus diabolicus vibes.

    Hi Jim,
I know several great sings containing the word Evermore hut I never heard of this band.
Well, within one minute I know this is not for me.
The music is almost constantly the same, must too fast to recognize anything. It’s like being under fire from all sides at once.
Someone is trying to sing it seems but I can barely understand what he’s singing.
My brain can’t cope with this 🫨🤯

      @@JimNewstead hi Jim,
It’s too fast, too much information at once. Everything sounds the same over a longer period. I want to hear the notes, the music. This is just the sound of a war zone to me.

    • @GalegHelross
      @GalegHelross 2 місяці тому +3

Thanks for giving it a try anyways. That feeling of being assaulted on all sides by sound is something a lot of people seek out, believe it or not! It also has the uncanny ability to let the beauty of certain moments shine through when that speed or heaviness pulls back.

Yes, highly sensitive too and no problems with Devin’s wall of sound.
Big problems with Tool too because of the singer’s voice. Growling; in most cases, a big no go area for me.

Hi Jim! Did you shoutout my name??? 😛
Hello Tony, I'm the other Tony that randomly shows-up, especially when one of my faves is reacted to :).
Nevermore is interesting, especially if a 1st time listener happens on one of their extremes. If they hear one track, it may be a Power Ballad-like track and immediately it is assumed that is what they sound like. If you to the other extreme, they are a Death Metal bands but no cookie monster vocals (which makes a Death Metal band "Death Metal"), but Warrel's unique melodic vocal style (in earlier days, he could hit some very high falsetto keys) is a clean melodic timbre, but he can distort his voice or sound more harsh (like he does with "Born"). And then the other side is their Technical/Complex tracks . . . and another where they lull you into a "Ballad" and then POW . . . *BRVTALITY* that if you attempt to headbang, your head may snap off!
THIS and more is what I loved about the band. And they are just about uncharacterizable (say that 6 times!); They are Proggy as in Prog Metal, but they have their Thrash tropes, they can be down-tuned heavy like modern Death Metal, they can have a groove-like Aggro/Groove Metal side, and they can go flying into space with their complexity.
"Van Williams" I feel is one of the most underrated Drummers out there, he is a MACHINE, his feet alone are insane and precise on the double-pedals, he is intricate on the various cymbals and drums, even when he plays slow and melodious. This goes the same for Guitarist extraordinaire "Jeff Loomis" (who just left "Arch Enemy" for his 3-4 year term), the man can play "anything", from Beauty to Brvtality, from acoustic interludes to gorgeous beautiful solos and creatively timed chugging riffage. Warrel's friend from their "Sanctuary" days; "Jim Sheppard" on Bass is able to gallop and have soulful phrases to keep-up with whatever mood is set by the band.
They have had various "2nd" Guitarists as well to do the rhythms and leads (on record & live), one of my faves being the late-great "Tim Calvert" from my fave Bay-Area Thrash band at the time "Forbidden" ("Steve Smyth" replaced him, and later joined Nevermore on THIS album), who appeared on my fave Nevermore album "Dreaming Neon Black" (1999) which is very somber and atmospheric at times, a bit gothic, but can be also fast/aggressive to match the sadness, anger, longing and heartbreak of its storyline (a Concept album) that in real-life has some crazy connections intertwined in its tragedy.
Another fave album is "Dead Heart in a Dead World" (2000) that has that "Groove/Thrash" vibe throughout, that is yet another to try out.
Warrel notices the connections to the world powers that have been controlling and manipulating, to media manipulation taking advantage of their viewers, to introspective and other topical subjects, well-written, pronounced and words punctuated in his uniquely creative style. When I hear "Bittersweet Feast", I can picture during the _Chorus_ a group of women dressed in 16th Century garb swaying, encircling Warrel singing, with their long hair swaying back and forth with that riff :p.
This album (their 2nd to last) is one of their more HEAVIER albums (along with the previous "Enemies of Reality" leading that heavier direction, and their last "The Obsidian Conspiracy"). But each album has some special tracks of various degrees that run the gambit of Metal styles but with Prog Metal elements.
    - Glad you are enjOying this Jim :) Onto the next . . . . .
