As much as I'd like to say it's a cute end, it's kind of weird to take a person to your house for dinner without properly informing them, and especially after you made it clear you're taking them home.
I remember as a kid waking up one morning and saying to myself... " today's the day ". Went to school, got that nonsense done, and as i walked home picked me up some soda and snacks. Soon as I got home, didn't even bother with homework, went STRAIGHT to Earthbound. I was at the village of all those Mr Saturn folk, and saved JUST before the time machine that would send our souls back in time. I. WAS. READY. ....I was not ready, btw. LOL 10 Levels underleveled, and 4 hours later, I finally fought off Pokey and got to the last boss. Took another 30 mins of just trying to stay alive, and at the end of it all... there was little I could even do. ...And then we prayed... And before long, the game was done. I look back on this with fond memories. The laughs I had, the utter confusion this game forced upon me, the ups and downs. And there, at the end.... not going to lie, I was in tears... but happy. Final Fantasy 6 is what got me into stories. Kingdom Hearts 1 is what made me want to become an artist. ...But it was Earthbound that helped me understand my place in the world. That... and that strange things tend to be the most fun. Specially with zombies around. ^ _^
For me the most memorable part is the general atmosphere. I love all the dialogue and how it just feels like you're walking around talking to neighborhood folk, helping people with their problems, meanwhile all that everyday stuff is bringing you closer to undoing an evil force. Then finally you're faced with the most evil power in the universe and all you can do is pray. What a great game...I just played through it for the umpteenth time this month and your video made me want to start right back up again. What a perfect game.
My most memorable moment was when you leave pokey’s house, the sky lights up and the onett theme starts playing. It felt magical to be able to explore the town without limits for the first time.
1. Tony is in love with Jeff. Something which was unheard of in a 90s game. Actually, pretty much everything in the entire game was unheard of in the 90s. The game was years ahead of it’s time. That’s why it’s memorable. 2. The final battle has an image of a fetus combined that the game is called Mother. And 3. The amazing ending and credits. That ending! That music! Perhaps the best ever on SNES along with FF3 and Chrono.
I just wish Tony was in the game more often, because he was a very enjoyable character that I enjoyed seeing whenever he'd appear. Also maybe more scenes of him pining for Jeff that could've been nice. But maybe I'm expecting too much from this tiny 90's game. Love EarthBound either way
"Fuzzy Pickles!" Definitely one of my fondest memories. This game was a blast when it first came out! I played it as a teenager back in the 90's. It was SO unique compared to my other favorite RPG's. Still love it! Thanks for the awesome video and trip down memory lane Xygor!
I was 11 when I bought this game in the 90s. The only reason I got it was because the box was huge, and it was on sale. Was and is the greatest and most memorable game I ever played.
My most memorable part of EarthBound was the scratch 'n sniff cards for the enemies. Also, the mandatory player's guide that came with the game was amazing in providing content local information with fake travel agency advertisement content.
A video like this for Mother 1 (Earthbound Beginnings) would be really useful The story is interesting but it's kind of a slog to play for most people so it could use a beat-by-beat overview
I liked 'gaming' the system.. using rock candy in battle with sugar packs, to get insane stat increases.. Doing about 16 sugar packs per character, before leveling up, gave very nice, massive stat gains in HP and psi points. I also, at the very first time you can pay for hints, i started to pay for every single hint in the game and wrote them all down. It took ages.. I did this on what must have been my eighth or so playthrough, just to have fun. The monster that gives you the most EXP ins the master criminal worm, outside Dahla, it's a red worm that runs from you.
Not sure if this is common knowledge or not but if you have a wii u you can get earthbound beginnings (mother 1) and earthbound (mother 2) on the eshop. After playing it once on a rom in grade school my friend bought both these for me this year for christmas (12 years later) and its the best gift i have ever recieved. An official version of one of the greatest games ive ever played.
Rented this game from a cheap video rental store in 95/96, got near the end and the game erased my save file! Had to buy it again a few years later at a funcoland, wished I kept it! Cost me a fortune to buy it again.
Props to you for taking the time to lay out this story for people like me who’ve always planned on playing this game but haven’t gotten to it yet. I o ow now that this game deserves a play through. Keep up the hard work and your channel will become legendary.
Do yourself a favor and play it! I did it recently for the first time ever, just a couple of weeks ago, and it was even better than what I expected (and my expectations were extremely high). It's just as good as everyone says it is, or even better if you ask me.
I just beat it on my SNES classic, one of the best games I ever played. I feel Nintendo should remake the Mother series and release it on the Switch. Keep the gameplay the same and make it how games look today.
EarthBound was Giygas's reversal of fortune. He sends part of his essence, in the form of the Mani Mani, back in time and, with (and through) it, orchestrates the prophecy of the Apple of Enlightment's fulfillment. Why might he do that? Let's explore. It's no secret that Pokey falls deeply under Giygas's influence, nor that he remains at least one step ahead of Ness and company for the entire length of their journey. Almost everywhere that we have to go, he has been there already and likely changed circumstances from what would be there normally. The exceptions to this (where things are still abnormal, but for different reasons) are: Threed (Master Belch's assignment), Winters (Starman DX) and Dalaam (where a fence of impassable rabbits is constructed, with the key placed in the care of the Plague Rat of DOOOOM). Giygas sent the Mani Mani back in time, it's position designed to direct Buzz-Buzz to Ness, where it would remain until unearthed by Lier X Agerate (allowing Buzz-Buzz to target the location and arrive in his meteorite time machine). After Starman Jr. confirms Buzz-Buzz's arrival, the events are set in motion for the influencing of Pokey. Over the course of the game through to Fourside, Pokey, unlike others in the proximity to the Mani Mani, never exhibits changes in his persona. He doesn't covet the Mani Mani Statue because he is voluntarily under it's control. And once that control is complete, Giygas moves to phase two: Moonside. Moonside is the result of Giygas, through the Mani Mani, utilizing Ness's psychic power to create an inverted version of Fourside. When Ness defeats the Mani Mani in Moonside, he breaks the statue, freeing the remaining essence to join with that already within Pokey and leaving an impression on Ness's psyche in the form of Ness's Nightmare. Afterward, Pokey continues to lead the party loosely to the remaining Sanctuaries so that Ness can remove that psychic impression and confirm that he possesses the Melody. It is only after Ness possesses the weapon (Melody) to stop Giygas that Pokey steals the Phase Disruptor, crashes it in the proper geographical location, then travels back through time for Giygas to begin the attack, indirectly directing them to the only surviving object known to travel through time: Buzz-Buzz's meteorite time machine. And once Pokey, himself, is able to confirm that Ness has all of the tools he needs to destroy Giygas, he leaves, carrying with him with piece of Giygas's essence from the Mani Mani. And once Giygas is destroyed by Ness, the piece within Pokey, as an existing paradox, becomes freed from the effects of time to transcend death, if not the withering effects of wielding even the limited evil Giygas is still capable of, a la Mother 3. At least, that's one interpretation. Another is that Ness died in the meteor impact and the game is him mentally coming to terms with that, with the locations, people and events getting stranger and stranger as the game goes on, as Ness has lesser and lesser knowledge of locations further and further from his home in Onett. And there's one that has Ness as an unknowingly reborn Giygas (it's influence being why so many things are hostile around Ness) who eventually figures it out, goes back in time and prevents himself from being born. Finally, there's the interpretation that the game plays out almost exactly as shown, except the ending does not have the party members return. Instead, Dr. Andonuts loses his mind at the guilt of having, essentially, murdered his son and his friends. The most memorable part of Earthbound, for me, is how little substories can seem to form on different playthroughs depending on what kind of non-essential behaviors you exhibit. I played a "Mama's Boy" playthrough, where I had Ness call his mom after every major story beat. Eventually, I started getting repeat dialogs, but up to and including Saturn Valley, the messages that I would get almost seemed self-aware of my story progress (I even got the "It sounds like you're calling from the moon." dialog when I called her when I first got to Saturn Valley). It was a nice bit of coincidence, and Mom has some interesting specific dialog for some story events (when you first rescue Paula is a nice one). I've done dozens of playthroughs, but each time there is usually something I'd never seen or personally experienced before. And for a game that doesn't have sidequests with meaningful effects on the story or gameplay, that's quite the achievement.
I always walked by this in Blockbuster as a kid and never tried it bought the SNES classic and this was one of the first games played. I am mid 30s and enjoyed it. Know that I would have loved it and Zelda games as a kid if i ever tried. Love the open world concept and being able to choose where to go, what to skip
I've never played this. I'm going to guess that whenever they couldn't think of a name for something, one of the developers went home and asked his 5 year old child 😂. If they do a modern remake I'd get it for sure.
Reached the part where they give you the mushroom problem that changes your controls and make this hard to play on 3ds... Maybe if it is on switch I can replay to that part and rotate my joycon as needed until I finish that part of the game.
Thank you so much for covering this game! Best memory was the music for sure, I did hate how much my attacks would miss! You are covering all my favorite games. I’m still stoked you did suikoden 1-2. Ever gonna do final fantasy tactics???
Man, I completely tuned out around the 4 minute mark. I guess this is the type of story you really have to experience by yourself aided by interactive nature of a videogame. This way just comes across as a convoluted mess. I hope I get to play these games someday.
Something I liked about Earthbound was how it kept it somewhat grounded in reality, not as epic fantasy scale as Final Fantasy. The main cast were kids, so it reminded me of those classic 80s and 90s films where a group of kids had to tackle a greater foe: Monster Squad, Stand By Me and the likes!
Can someone please tell me the name of the song in the intro? I have heard it in bits and pieces and it sounds familiar but it's killing me that I haven't heard the song in its entirety.
you Should Play Forge of Empires' Like i do' i Also Have Videos of the Game 😁 and This Video of yours Makes me Wish That i was Zapped into This Game' Like That Movie TRON...
I used to pronounce onette like “aw-net” too until I played earthbound, but now I say it like “one-t”, as in the number 1. This is because the other towns are also based on numbers. (Twoson, Threed, Fourside) I could be very wrong in this, but I could also be very right, but that’s just a theory…….. A GAME THEORY!!
Recording the melody of Giant Step has got to be a Coltrane reference. Especially with the whole jazz band stuff and the sound track being pretty dang jazzy as well
Good video, bad title. I don't feel like anything was explained. Rather It was just story telling, that everyone could understand after playing earthbound. Explain means a statement or account that makes something clear. If you have played Mother 2/Earthbound there is almost nothing new to know from this video, but if you haven't then that what you are watching is EarthBound Complete Game Story. (Not including other games) In summary as I said, good video, but title is missleading.
I kinda feel like I want to play these games after watching the first 10 min. Never really had the urge to but the story, so far, sounds really interesting
When i was 10 in i rented this game from video vault or roadrunner video....it came with a guide. It was the first rpg i ever played and actually understood(other than willow on nes but i was too young to understand what was even happening in that game or that ot was a rpg i just knew it was willow) the guide actually helped me understand the mechanics of an rpg. I miss this game. If you have any chance to play it DO IT
Best memories as a 10 year old. Moved into a new house, summertime, no furniture. Just a sleeping bag, my best friend, pizza hut, and the huge guide. My friend and I took shifts playing this and ff6 for like a week straight.
One of my favorite JRPG's, but the Fourside Department Store Dungeon can legit burn in a car fire, the enemy damage and HP is to great for the average level upon arrival. I have to grind like 6 levels in the desert and STOCK bottle rockets just to make it to the third floor. The only other part close is Majicant but that's mostly because Ness is alone.
Most overrated RPG ever. I could not being myself to finish it and I've played some pretty garbage rpgs. But this game....total snoozefest. The MTMG was just not for me. Nothing that kept me going
Earthbound is memorable for so many big and little things... But my experience with it is a little different. Might've tried it out at the Gamestown shop at Noord Scharwoude in the 90's (Fantastic shop where you could playtest ANY game before buying, also had imported games and errrh... technical upgrades for consoles so you could play those), but I did my first full playthrough after playing Mother 3. Definitely a non-standard game, but a fantastic one. Mr. Saturn are adorable, Giygas is disturbing yet pitiable and Pokey/Porkey falling under the same terms (as per the end of M3) is a little sad. Off beat humor and the alternative contemporary setting make it work even more. I do like the little details, like one npc warning you that someone did #2 basically in the sand, and that you can have the misfortune of walking too close and experiencing the lingering aroma.
My favorite moment is when you arrive at giygas base (the organ place) it just has the feeling of ( this is it you played for a long time for this moment the fate of the planet is in your hands)
the most memorable part for me is when the bee dies, because that's as far as i got before realising i didn't have the patience required to play this game.. what a weird plot
I guess you have to be a certain type of person to enjoy this. To me this sounds like a nonstop randomly generated story that was constructed rolling dice with random verbs, nouns and adjectives on them
It’s pronounced Won-net not Own-et (and Twoson is pronounced Too-sun not Too-son) why because of the number naming scheme for these town Onett Twoson, Threed, and Fourside.
EarthBound was a fantastic game that was unlike anything else out there. The art and sound was completely unique and unlike anything else on the snes. I still have the cartridge which is worth a good amount these days

The part where i will eventually play it
Learning the hard way that "Auto" wouldn't win all my battles for me.
Sancuary 2 Cause its Hard And Giygas Cause ScAaArY
My big sister had to help me beat Threed when I was a kid because the music gave me nightmares! 💀
After Fourside because you didn't have to do any random tasks to move the story along and also because the game became a bit more challenging.
Alternate ending:
Take Paula to your home in Onett. When you talk to Ness's mother ,she will let Paula stay for dinner.
Thank you Manny, didn't know that!
I've played through this game like 12 times in my life and I never thought to try that. That's cute as heck!
That's the first ending I did. Also funny enough, Tracy calls Paula Ness' girlfriend.
As much as I'd like to say it's a cute end, it's kind of weird to take a person to your house for dinner without properly informing them, and especially after you made it clear you're taking them home.

True, the atmosphere is great!
Its very surrealist, and its clearly influenced a TON of games that followed

The fetus in the Giygas battle was unintentional
The fetus was both unintentional and has been denied by Itoi
If the game came out today, it would be more popular than it was back in the 90s.

@@Xygor I’m playing it on my Nintendo Switch
@@dillonkinder9296 Excellent!
Reached the part where they give you the mushroom problem that changes your controls and make this hard to play on 3ds... Maybe if it is on switch I can replay to that part and rotate my joycon as needed until I finish that part of the game.
Haha, that mushroom stuff was crazy. There was so much silly stuff in this game.
I wish there was a real Runaway Five. Best part of the game.
Check out The Blues Brothers
They were hilarious!
Thank you so much for covering this game! Best memory was the music for sure, I did hate how much my attacks would miss! You are covering all my favorite games. I’m still stoked you did suikoden 1-2. Ever gonna do final fantasy tactics???
For sure I will do that one eventually
ness misses often if not calling his mom often enough
@@necrosadotor stfu….are you serious?? I’m gonna have to play it threw again
@@cliftonsargent1572 for reals. also casey bat misses a lot but does high dmg
The teddy bear dolls were amazing I remember being heart broken when the first busted their seems
True, they were!
The most memorable moment for me was seeing a giant red demonic fetus as the final boss.
Man, I completely tuned out around the 4 minute mark. I guess this is the type of story you really have to experience by yourself aided by interactive nature of a videogame. This way just comes across as a convoluted mess. I hope I get to play these games someday.
Emulation is free and really the only way to experience these classics :)
Def do yourself a favor and play it. The monkey cave is a pain in the ass tho
love your videos man ! Gave me the opotunity to learn about iconic titles I never played
Thanks, glad you like them!
True!
Can someone please tell me the name of the song in the intro? I have heard it in bits and pieces and it sounds familiar but it's killing me that I haven't heard the song in its entirety.
Magus' Theme from Chrono Trigger.
you Should Play Forge of Empires' Like i do' i Also Have Videos of the Game 😁
and This Video of yours Makes me Wish That i was Zapped into This Game' Like That Movie TRON...
Did you know? The only characters that appeared in all three games were the monkeys.
I did not know that, thanks!
I used to pronounce onette like “aw-net” too until I played earthbound, but now I say it like “one-t”, as in the number 1. This is because the other towns are also based on numbers. (Twoson, Threed, Fourside)
I could be very wrong in this, but I could also be very right, but that’s just a theory…….. A GAME THEORY!!
Recording the melody of Giant Step has got to be a Coltrane reference. Especially with the whole jazz band stuff and the sound track being pretty dang jazzy as well
I didn't realize that.
(Not including other games)
In summary as I said, good video, but title is missleading.
I kinda feel like I want to play these games after watching the first 10 min. Never really had the urge to but the story, so far, sounds really interesting
Hopefully you did play it. This game is a lot of fun. I’m prolly gonna replay it again soon
It's worth playing!
If you have any chance to play it DO IT
Yes, do it now!
@@Xygor i sir concur
Great game and story I hate pokey him becoming evil is so crazy. But, the good part is he got his just desserts later.
Best memories as a 10 year old. Moved into a new house, summertime, no furniture. Just a sleeping bag, my best friend, pizza hut, and the huge guide. My friend and I took shifts playing this and ff6 for like a week straight.
Man the nostalgia lol, sometimes I miss those days
One of my favorite JRPG's, but the Fourside Department Store Dungeon can legit burn in a car fire, the enemy damage and HP is to great for the average level upon arrival. I have to grind like 6 levels in the desert and STOCK bottle rockets just to make it to the third floor. The only other part close is Majicant but that's mostly because Ness is alone.
Most overrated RPG ever. I could not being myself to finish it and I've played some pretty garbage rpgs. But this game....total snoozefest. The MTMG was just not for me. Nothing that kept me going
7:34 ... it is
But, wrong blue
Dark blue is for sadness
Light blue is for happines.
This deserves more views, Good Job!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it and the game! Have you played it lately?
Thanks for sharing these memories!
The theme I kept hearing in the game several times was "My Way" by Frank Sinatra. Peculiar don't you think? 😅
I was loving the video until 17:07
I couldn’t follow the dialogue at all with the terrible music chop playing in the background 😣
My favorite moment is when you arrive at giygas base (the organ place) it just has the feeling of ( this is it you played for a long time for this moment the fate of the planet is in your hands)
I always thought one of giygas' forms should have been a large red Starman with shoulder spikes like Starman DX
Wanted to play Mother 3 after playing Mother 1 and not having the patience to play Mother 2, so, this video was just what I needed.
the most memorable part for me is when the bee dies, because that's as far as i got before realising i didn't have the patience required to play this game.. what a weird plot
Damn. Pokey's the worst Gary ever...
Maybe not as bad as Gary! Gaaaary! Gary!
Iykyk lol
I guess you have to be a certain type of person to enjoy this. To me this sounds like a nonstop randomly generated story that was constructed rolling dice with random verbs, nouns and adjectives on them
This is my first time realizing that Ness was inside the Starman in the Box when you buy physical copy.
I think it's just intended to be a reflection of him on the visor, he's not actually inside it.
Need to hit that alarm bell, you’re videos are great!!
Thank you!
It’s pronounced Won-net not Own-et (and Twoson is pronounced Too-sun not Too-son) why because of the number naming scheme for these town Onett Twoson, Threed, and Fourside.
I can see how this inspired Undertale, it feels like some sort spin-off game for Earthbound.
The amount of times this guy has mispronounced certain words is astonishing
This an explanation....its a summation. Do a video about deep explanation
One of the most bizarre games I've ever played.
It really was, wasn't it?
Earthbound was weird
Yep, that definitely seems like one of the main refrains!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 very weird
what is that intro theme
Magus' Theme from Chrono Trigger.
Literally one of the first things buzz buzz says is "A bee i am not lmao"
ive just realized i missed the 2nd sancuary location :(((
Nice job! Awesome video, are you gonna do the one with Lucas?? I'll watch it for sure
that’s called Mother 3
EarthBound was a fantastic game that was unlike anything else out there. The art and sound was completely unique and unlike anything else on the snes.
I still have the cartridge which is worth a good amount these days
Wasn't it though? It is worth a lot!
Man, this dude does not know what "explain" means.
earthbound and undertale are the best games in the universe, no game will ever be better than them
You can tell the creator of this game spent a lot of his life on drugs....
I finally beat EarthBound it was fucking amazing I was crying at the credits
Wasn't it great?
@@Xygor you beat your ass it was. I’m currently playing Chrono Trigger right now
In Japanese version of this game the dream world he is naked
awesome video!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it and the game! Have you played it lately?
i loved how wacky the game was truly a refreshing take on rpgs
