It has been almost 12 years since I touched this game, but i remember a wedding at the end. I need to play this game again. It is my favorite one ever.
Man oh man, xygor, another phenomenal retrospective and overview! I remember hearing from my classmates in middle school when this first came out on the Super Nintendo, but I was still riding high off of A Link to the Past, Illusion of Gaia, etc. I dismissed it, until a few years later when one of my friends, who was really into RPGs, offered to sell it to me with the Nintendo players guide, as well as Dragon Warrior IV on the NES, for $20! I took him up on the offer, and proceeded to play through the game my senior year of high school. This was would have been about 6 years after it was originally released, and I'm so glad that I did! Seriously one of the most emotive, deep plots, with well developed characters, despite the fact that there were so many to choose from! I was crying many times throughout the playthrough, and hearing your overview of this gem of a game, I was crying just listening to the story be told again. That is a true tale of a masterpiece of a game!! One of the greatest video games of all time!
@@Xygor I finished it last year for the first time in a long time! I had an old save file on my cart that was in the World of Ruin, and I just never completed it. Such a tearjerker of a game, one of the all-time best story arcs and settings! And the characters are all so immersive!
Chrono Trigger is my favorite game (it came out when I was 12) but this game opened my eyes to what Video games could theoretically do. It is arguably the most influential game of all time, even if it isn’t regarded as one of the best by most. I regard it as a top 5 game for sure.
I've never played a FInal Fantasy game ever in my life since my childhood in Nigeria but this game, I stumbled on this video randomly and now this will be my first Final Fantasy game. I love the themes of hope in despair, perseverance despite failure, unity, and overcoming nihilism. Thanks for such a great video.
I feel bad for anyone ff fan that jumped on board when ff7 came out and missed out on this game when it first released. This game blew my mind. I still play it every year and I still say it's the best ff entry.
@@Locazoo675 lol, square soft does their very best to remind people why final fantasy 7 is their favorite final fantasy haha. I guess that makes us the cool kids in class because we have a more refined taste in final fantasy lol.
@@frankrizzo7713Hironobu Sakaguchi said that his favorite was FFIX and that it's the perfect representation of his original vision for an FF game. FF7 just gets remakes because the masses like it and that makes money
This is my favorite game of all time. It’s hard for me to really understand how a group of people actually sat down and wrote such a perfect story. It almost doesn’t seem possible.
Man, after binge watching a number of your videos I've determined that your channel is seriously underrated/ under appreciated. You do such a good job of going over everything that even when you already know the whole story its still amazing lol
Gau was not born deformed. His mother died in childbirth and his dad went nuts. Thinking only a monster could have killed his wife so he abandoned Gau.
This is a magical video. It's hard to keep track of the many characters and their lives during a playthrough. Much like a GM in a tabletop RPG, you've really brought to life all these characters; so much so that the narrative leaves a much more lasting mark in my mind. When I boot the game up again, it's going to be so vibrant.
I can't imagine how many weeks this took to produce. The character lines and music truly made this game. As well as the amazing pixel art that can convey so much detail with just a few pixels. Amazing game.
Another great video, as always. Without opening the door to which SNES Final Fantasy was better (IV vs VI), this video does call out my biggest complaint of VI: the World of Ruin has virtually no story, it’s simply you grabbing your crew and beating Kefkfa. There’s little character progression or development compared to the first act and most of the secondary characters (i.e. Bannon) are gone, never mentioned and we just presume are dead. It’s interesting that 40 minutes of the video was dedicated to the World of Balance, and the delta to the World of Ruin which shows that even when you’re explaining the entire plot, there isn’t much of a story to tell. I did appreciate you showing Sabin giving the suplex to the Phantom train and while never stated Relm is Shadow/Clyde ‘s daughter, the fact they both can use the Memento Ring is all the proof I need.
Thanks Ace. I think VI is the best in the series, but I can understand the gripe about the World of Ruin. It was a change of pace for the story for sure.
@@Xygor I should note that when I say I like IV better than VI, it’s with the smallest margin that is possible between two games. In addition, when I say IV, I mean the actual Final Fantasy IV Hard Type with the more accurately translated script. I’ll concede that Final Fantasy II was a bit rough around the edges and III was the better of the 2 games if we’re comparing apples to apples.
I liked the change of pace brought about by World of Ruin. You literally determine your ending party, and I disagree with the notion that there is very little story: In fact, each of the characters arcs see completion in the World of Ruin, on some minor NPC characters even see their own stories reach a conclusion.
I was a devout ffx fan, having it as my favorite of all time. Without this video I wouldn’t understand the depth and impact of this game. I fall asleep to this video frequently. It’s such a beautiful narrative for all characters.

05:25 i know the reason they changed the Imperial Salute in later editions but as an 12 year old playing this game for the first time in 1995 I have to say when I saw it I knew immediately that the Empire was evil. Funny how exposing a 12 year old to it in a game did not corrupt my mind or rob my innocent youth.
Who knows. Maybe after remaking the popular one thanks to its timing they'll remake the best one. I don't think they can give it the FF7 treatment though. FF7 was a rather simple, if messy, game, but FF6 had to rely on much more than graphics and flashy moves to reach its status and would make for a very complex remake. Nostalgia isnt as strong with it either. FF7 holds its place for being a lot of ppl's first RPG.
Alexandre Simoneau 6’s plot is rather simple, it’s the sub plots that give it the complexity it has, and if Square decides to remake it and doesn’t give it the 7 treatment the fans would be outraged
Best overall story for me including best "true" villain in the entire series. I know Sephiroth is most popular but we all know he is gonna be the bad guy from the moment you saw him cuz he is too cool. This dude is like Joker from Dark Knight movie you think he is just a clown but he murders everyone. The heroes here feel extremely balanced, unlike FFs 7+ where the MC hogs 80% of the spotlight. Everyone seems to play a crucial role and got a lot of story development. It's also one of the darkest FFs I've seen with magic being fueled by esper remains and all the magic leaving the land.
I rented this game back in the day and the thing that sucked 11 year old me in was the sidekicks at the beginning clearly being named after Luke Slywalker’s wingmen in Star Wars. That’s knowing your audience as a translator. It’s funny how translators of the 1990’s were so clearly into “nerd culture” I recognized SOTN for having directly used so many names of things and people from the Silmarillion by JRR Tolkien, the book hardcore Tolkien fans knew of.
Like I said before I love the video. I really appreciate the fact that you explain the background stories that lead into the game and the fact that you tell the story that unfolds in the game without telling how to make each and every event happen. That leaves it to be figured out by the players of this game. Very good job, thank you very much!
Great recap but I feel like part of what makes the story so great is finding all those details about the characters as the story progressed rather than to have the whole picture before the events of the story take place. But dont take my criticism as bad, if anything going in a true chronological order as you did is probably the best way to tell the story. So yea, great recap.
There is a very well written fanfic I had read years ago that was essentially a direct sequel to FF6, 10 years later I think. It spoke of how magic was slowly returning along with an awesome plot... I hope that story hasn't been lost to time.
I've played this game at least once every year since it came out. It never gets old. And I'm still discovering new things. The last time I played I found the scenes with Gau's father in the WOR.
You've got my sub man. Fantastic stuff you're doing here. THis remains my all time favorite game and this video helped me relive my childhood. Thank you so much for this.
there was alot of murders and death and drama for a kid... definitely one of my all time favourite games... i spent countless hours discovering things and discussing rumars with other people at school, i swore up and down there was a way to bring back leo, but no... then something called the internet where you could access and print a total walk through came along and i got my hands on one and went through step by step... man what a time lol
I really like the ensemble nature of the cast in this, even if it prevents any one character from having a personal investment over the main villain the way most stories tend to go. It drives home the message of finding the will to move forward and know that life's worth living by putting us into the shoes of various characters with different backstories, motivations, and character arcs simultaneously and more or less equally. Also, probably the best usage of the "power of friendship" trope to defeat a lone and nihilistic enemy. It'd be interesting to see this adapted as a multiple POV series.
Xygor Gaming, you want to work with me on finding the real ending? You know, where you answer Gestahl’s questions right, do the statue sequence right, let Sabin die in the town, leave Cyan on the Phantom Train in the World of Ruin, and leave Edgar in the Underwater Palcace that then changes the future present? I can explain my ideas, I believe someone hacked the game’s code in 1997 and said those other endings are there. They have a lot to do with Relm/Ultros.
It's interesting how often the motif of a country closing itself off from the outside world and conflict revolving around mixed-breed entities comes up in Japanese stories. The aftermath of theEdo period and the Meiji restoration and subsequent modernisation clearly still resonates with writers in Japan even after a century and a half.
These sorts of political matters in a culture always show up in the media of that culture. Sometimes subtly and sometimes more overtly. Politics always influences.
Such an amazing story. I loved the tone conveyed through storyline, music, atmosphere, and diverse characters. Better graphics have become such a crutch!
There are many reasons I believe 6 to be the best FF ever. That said, perhaps the BIGGEST reason is how satisfying the end is. No game has ever done what 6 did. You followed all these characters for so long, and at the end, the story follows them on their way out of the tower, showing how each has progressed. And while this game doesn't have many happy endings, per se, it DOES show that even though things have been rough, each character has found a happiness that will guide them through the future. So, even though they don't have a happy ending right now, they will be okay and will eventually HAVE that happy ending. The stories of these characters don't end simply because the game does. They are still living characters, their lives continue, and they're going to be okay. And that's about the most satisfying things I can hope for in a story. It's the most realistic ending in a game I've ever experience. This game wouldn't be so amazing if the ending fell flat. It's perhaps one of the most complete games ever made.
My favorite FF. While the graphics were beautiful I loved how it left a large portion to the imagination using graphics as more of a guide for the story unfolding in your mind. Also the music was incredible. Great video.
@@XygorI think I replayed it about 10 years ago. But not in the near past. It's interesting that every time I hear the music of the game it takes me back to when I was about 11 and playing it for the first time.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO.
The opera house is the most amazing part and music from all video games. It blew my mind when I was a kid (I was 10).
Mine too. So amazing!
It has been almost 12 years since I touched this game, but i remember a wedding at the end. I need to play this game again. It is my favorite one ever.
My favorite too!
Very well told. Great memories of playing the game came rushing back. Thank you for that.
P.s. please make more!
I definitely will.
playing the what now? lol
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it and the game! Have you played it lately?
@@Xygor I finished it last year for the first time in a long time! I had an old save file on my cart that was in the World of Ruin, and I just never completed it. Such a tearjerker of a game, one of the all-time best story arcs and settings! And the characters are all so immersive!
Damn.. this reminds me how special this game was to me! One of my most favorite games I've ever played. It is so incredible
Wow, that's awesome to hear! You won't regret it, this is an awesome game!
@@Xygor Many thanks, friend. Once I'm done with this semester, I'll buy and play it on steam.
this game has blown me away with one of the most impressive soundtracks in any game. I'm amazed anyone is still talking about it.
Nobuo Uematsu (the composer) says it is his favorite Final Fantasy! Its mine too, story and soundtrack.
My favourite too
same, my favorite. i'm with uematsu on this one.
It really is timeless!
I feel bad for anyone ff fan that jumped on board when ff7 came out and missed out on this game when it first released. This game blew my mind. I still play it every year and I still say it's the best ff entry.

I guess that makes us the cool kids in class because we have a more refined taste in final fantasy lol.

Thank you, glad you enjoyed it and the game! Have you played it lately?
@@Xygor I have. On the iPhone version recently released. I can’t wait for the Nintendo switch version
This is my favorite game of all time. It’s hard for me to really understand how a group of people actually sat down and wrote such a perfect story. It almost doesn’t seem possible.
Its unbelievable. I stopped playing RPG's soon after this because nothing ever added up to this or Chrono Trigger.
Mine too. Isn't it wonderful?
Man, after binge watching a number of your videos I've determined that your channel is seriously underrated/ under appreciated. You do such a good job of going over everything that even when you already know the whole story its still amazing lol
Thank you!
What a powerful story
Yes it was, have you played it lately?
Haven't played it in years but it was amazing Definitely needs A remake
Gau was not born deformed. His mother died in childbirth and his dad went nuts. Thinking only a monster could have killed his wife so he abandoned Gau.
Yup, Sabin is still my fav final fantasy character to this day 💪💪
Isn't he sweet?
@@Xygor yup, and badass too. If only we can get a total remake for ff6, that would be awesome to see his blitz skills

My favorite game, ever. Thanks for the awesome narration and letting me relive everything without having to play through it all.
Tragic.
Mine too, such a classic!
Thank you!!

Awesome story description of final fantasy 6.
Do you plan to do one of these videos for the game earthbound?
Great job. Me and Junkzor miss you. It’s so weird hearing you speak without saying chode every other sentence.
Can u please do full stories for Ff8, Ff9, Xenogears, legend of dragoon, etc ?
If you ever need English to French translation, holla.
FF6 is my Fav FF, When will SE realize to make a Remake for this?!
Thank you for filling in the gaps from my childhood memory of the game.
Great video. You pointed out a bunch of material that doesn’t translate very well in the game. Let’s hope for a remake of this epic gem
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it and the game! Have you played it lately?
05:25 i know the reason they changed the Imperial Salute in later editions but as an 12 year old playing this game for the first time in 1995 I have to say when I saw it I knew immediately that the Empire was evil. Funny how exposing a 12 year old to it in a game did not corrupt my mind or rob my innocent youth.
Amazing summary. I remember why I loved this game so much. Such as great cast and meaningful "sidequests".
Glad you enjoyed it!
Yo, this game NEEDS a hd remake! Maybe if the ff7 remake does very well, we will get one!
There is a fairly hd version on mobile but it is horrid. They need to make a next gen version on present consoles and pc.
Doubt they will go backwards, buddy.
If you get the pc version and download some graphics mods. Theres even a mod that makes Celes actually sing

And the world being destroyed
@@jc.1191 by using a black magical ball
I agree!
I remember when I played the 3 split scenarios. It was the first time I’ve felt playing an adventure.
It really was, the party split part was so great.
Like I said before I love the video. I really appreciate the fact that you explain the background stories that lead into the game and the fact that you tell the story that unfolds in the game without telling how to make each and every event happen. That leaves it to be figured out by the players of this game. Very good job, thank you very much!
Thank you, I’m glad you liked it!
Thank for the video and for SUPPLEXING THE TRAIN!
Had to do it!
That was incredibly well done. You’ve got a sub from me keep it up!! I looked forward to the next :-)

there was alot of murders and death and drama for a kid... definitely one of my all time favourite games... i spent countless hours discovering things and discussing rumars with other people at school, i swore up and down there was a way to bring back leo, but no... then something called the internet where you could access and print a total walk through came along and i got my hands on one and went through step by step... man what a time lol
Yeah, I remember a lot of the Leo rumors back in the day as well. Haha!
I haven’t played this game in so long, it just brings back so many good memories
For me too. Always!
The story in this game is so good. This is my favorite FF game.
Mine too!
Great video. You brought back a lot of memories. I still think this is the best FF game
Thanks, and me too!
Yup. Its too good. And the only one that kinda had a messed up ending.
For this sort of matters that is a really brief period.
These sorts of political matters in a culture always show up in the media of that culture. Sometimes subtly and sometimes more overtly. Politics always influences.
Thanks man theres no way i would of figured it out without your help
This game so complicated

Such an amazing story. I loved the tone conveyed through storyline, music, atmosphere, and diverse characters. Better graphics have become such a crutch!
Totally!

Yes. Amazing story. Gorgeous game, moving music. 11/10.
Couldn't agree more!
Nailed it.
Appreciate the memories!
My favorite FF. While the graphics were beautiful I loved how it left a large portion to the imagination using graphics as more of a guide for the story unfolding in your mind. Also the music was incredible. Great video.
