Difference between Markets and Capitalism

  • Some people think that because the Prophet PBUH was a trader, it means that there is no contradiction between Islam and capitalism. This argument equates trade with capitalism. Trade and capitalism are not the same things. Markets have existed long before capitalism and will continue to exist long after capitalism. Capitalism is the sale and purchase of labour-power which started in 16th century in Europe and then spread through colonialism to the rest of the world.

When you treat humans as a machine, you strip away their humanity, reducing them to mere cogs in the gears of productivity, forgetting that their value lies not in their efficiency, but in their capacity for creativity, empathy, and connection.

I think instead of posing categories upfront like Socialism or Communism, we should work upon extant Capitalism in this way :- Try to see all possible paths including periodic reforms and reformations that Capitalism would take in future based on our understanding of its present condition. Let us keep it open. No socialism. No communism (it irks many). Then only we can reach somewhere (else/other than current state). It won't be prediction or prophecy but chalking out likely paths where we humans have a say, a will, freedom to give a turn around to capitalism rather than being either at its receiving end or falling prey to an uncertain path with the given name while contents are either distorted or state sponsored (e.g. state capitalism of Stalin and Mao). "Green Revolution" was state revolution/action. No farmers/groups/people demanded or desired it. People want state. State as patron. All roads end there. Be it in Pakistan or India or Austria or America! This is worrisome! Then why to enter into the utopia called communism? And why not? Let us keep names/categories out. How to be in the PRESENT first and understand it in the light of past social formations and past modes of production (MoP) including our despotic Asiatic Mode of Production (AMoP) that breeds centralisation of power (currently on eruption in both Pakistan and India as also elsewhere with flair)?

2:20 - 2:25 Difficult to express! "Ye wo sheh hai"! 😃. Same way Marx felt it difficult to express "value"! He explained it in Capital vol.1 as "common something in all commodities"! How sincere! How honest! He could not give any other name or term to "value"! Everyone finds it difficult to express or explain. His crude expression value = "common something" (as if ghostly, spectral) is the best till date!

Professor Taimur saheb, kindly make a video on Marx's "On the so-called Primitive Accumulation of Capital" (what Adam Smith earlier termed "Primary Accumulaion of Capital") in Urdu. The reason I say is that Pakistan (like other developing countries) are trapped in the rhetoric of "Sarmayadari", "attracting investment", "attracting foreign companies", etc. etc. People should know how the bizarre and most grotesque category called "capital" was invented (which century, which continent, by which activities). And how this "primitive" method of 16th century has clung to it even today and will be stuck to it until this ruthless capital is dispatched to its grave. I think uninitiated novice people have over-positive view of goddess "capital" to the point of this force acting as miraculous godly fetishism! IMF ko hi le lijiye! We are purturbed the way IMF has overlooked (should I say consciously encouraged and facilitated?) rigging, stealing, looting of votes in people's mandate on 9 Feb (s)elections! The so-called "primitive" was very well present in the realm of modernity of IMF-Capitalism! It's her rule! Late Samir Amin would have said, it's in the "culture" of capital. My problem is :- What Is To Be Done With Capital? Mao would say, I shall tame and maim it. Then Deng started working on it in 1980s. To the point that China started glorifying and celebrating capital and capitalism. I guess the state in China shall confiscate all capital. See how it treats billionaire corporate Jackma! Samething with Ambani Adani..... State (in its daily tussle with capitalusm) shall eventually appear as the STRONGEST "So-called primitive accumulator"! My reading suggests that even Marx didn't have a solution to deal with State. At the most he wrote, how much more Paganism does society want? It appears there's a force behind force behind force...... endless chain!

In socialism, the market rates would be determined by a central plan by examining the cost of production and the benefits to society. Somethings would be sold above their cost (for instance cigarettes) and others things below (for instance education). Overall, the costs would balance with the prices.

True. Some form of wage-labour has existed for a long time. But it was not the dominant form of production in Arabia. The dominant form in Arabia was pastoralism and trade.

The biggest illusion that many Communist have and also which leads to there failure is elimination of poverty. Poverty is an organic human situation. If you provide roti kapra makaan to every poor even then poverty does'nt end but the standard of poverty will rise and will make poor more lazy, unskilled and evasive.
Poverty is not only a situation but an attitude also, there is never lack of opportunity to escape out of it but other different reasons like lack of motivation, defeatist mindset, laziness, bad decisions and ignorance are reasons majority of poor remain poor. I know a lot of people who schooled and graduated same like me but are struggling to get even an entry level job because poverty comes from a reason like not working, researching and learning.
So this is capitalism that enrages and provide incentive to poor by making there own after sufferings of poverty. No matter how much Socialist governments welfare the poor they also never will end poverty because it never goes enough and people will become too dependent on it, thus stuck in endless cycle.
