Thought I would just catch a glimpse of the definition and go to sleep as I was very sleepy but the whole video was so captivating with humour and touched on interesting topics that it felt like a really short one. Very enjoyable and informative. Glad I watched it.
I am Shahzad Ahmad from Lawa, Chakwal.I have been following you for a long time. I always wonder how you understand such complex ideas and then explain it in a very simple way. Hats off!
Very simplistic approach towards postmodernism as if it is a singular well-defined movement and as if Foucault, Derrida, Kristeva and others had perfect agreement about what postructuralism (the speaker terms as postmodernism) means and they agreed over what its 'essence' was. A non-serious approach to a rich and multi-faceted topic namely intersections between marxism and postructuralism which Taimur sets up in stark dichotomous terms as if no postructuralist can ever share any marxist leaning. He should read non-radical marxist introductions to critical postructuralism and how it draws on neo-marxism for social change and promoting social justice. Taimur rhetoric, in my humble opinio, does no good service to promoting intellectual inquiry or to developing critical thinking of his students (no offence Taimur bhai).
You are a formidable mind. I am not sure I have heard anyone put these concepts together to explain Post modernism before. I hope to meet you some day to be able to have a one on one discussion. I benefit greatly from your videos.
I was having trouble to comprehend the postmodernism topic, as i have to talk about it in 2 days. I watched numerous videos, videos by foreign students and teachers but couldn't really understand it. But, in this video, you extremely made it too simple for me to comprehend it. Thank you.
I just realized that i am/was a postmodernist without realising it but then if someone calls him/herself postmodernist and rejects modernist then it is the contradiction of its own initial premise. Post-modernism explains society while modernists attempt to cure its ails.
The discussions between Nancy Fraser, Iris Young, and Judith Butler is actually quite fascinating as far as "identity politics" and economic redistribution is concerned. Even Gramsci's idea of cultural hegemony is not far from thinking that hierarchies in public culture make the worldview of the ruling class to be the norm - that consent is generated via these narratives. He was also critical of modernity. There is a violence committed on the bodies of people, and also the minds.
Your videos make me think , be they about economics, religion or politics. Amazing content. Not that I may agree with everything but what's great is that they make me search and read more. A request is that under every video you should mention noteworthy books that may help us learn more and develop our own opinion about the subject.
Sir, would love to hear about the critical international theory or frankfurt school theory from you. the way you explain your ideas or these hard theories is phenomenal
It's really great to gain knowledge on such issues that too from a credible source. Since I am from India, I would appreciate it more if you could give English or Hindi meanings of the Urdu words you use.
There are only two philosophy teachers in Pakistan teaching masses the footnotes to Plato: Ahmed Javed, an Islamist and Taimur Rehman, a leftist. Immense respect for both.
please keep your volume in the middle or fix it in post. it goes from 7 to 11 and it's quite harsh with earphones. thanks for a super informative lecture.
As a lecturer, because you are explaining different ideas,it often got diluted with your own stance. So as you are putting content online,it's very important to clarify your stance and position on contravention topics. Like faminism etc.
There are some criticism 1 - you said that post modernist believe that meaning is subjective - so do atheists and Marxists like Jean Paul Sartre and Albert Camus "The absurd. So i'm not sure how you as a Marxist can use that against them? 2 - You also said science is objective but then how do you explain paradigm shifts (Thomas Khun) from Geo centric to Helio centric or Time being fixed to not being fixed to Quantum mechanics and explanation of gravity between Einstein and Newton? seems like paradigm shift make scientific truth relative by nature. 3 - Causality has the classical problem of Induction and the black swan problem - which goes back to Hume/Melbranche (the Asharis in Islamic history as well). So how can you rebuttal that? 4 - Just because post modernist believe that philosophy doesn't lead to truth or Objectivity doesn't mean they don't use science or claim subjective truths that are important to them. They only disagree that any Grand narrative can be made on them but have no problem of using it for practical reasons or having subjective political and moral opinions. 5 - You said that language is done by abstraction but Wittgenstein showed that language is based on meaning and not definitions - he gave the famous Beetle in box argument and subjective experiences where "private languages" are impossible because language is based on meaning. 6 - How do you explain inter sex people or people that say that gender and race is a social construct?

16:48 Can you please share the source of this quote by Aristotle? Can't seem to find it anywhere. I'm reading Prior and Posterior Analytics of Aristotle these days.
Spent two entire days absorbing postmodernism before listening to this yet again spellbinding lecture video, making things ridiculously easy...Oops sorry for the Postmodernist Verbos comment.
Sir, i think your whole video is based on the underlying misunderstanding of the term postmodernism. Postmodernism was not an orchestrated movement to destroy " enlightenment values" or the " west". Lyotard used this term only for Descriptive purposes. He was contending that the west is now a" postmodern" society, that is, there is an attitude of "incredulity" towards the " metanarratives"( e,g Marxism , liberalism etc) in the society. So, unlike the Critical Theory, postmodern thought was not a carefully designed movement. Even Focault and Derrida categorically rejected the label.
@@Taimur_Laal Sometimes peaceful revolts overcome dictatorships or monarchies based on ideas and excesses of the regimes. In French revolution it were the ideas that erupted the revolt. In modern times, no country can occupy the even far less backward state; is that not power of existing concepts of freedom and self-determination and power of media that fail attempts to conquer weaker states by stronger states?
@@Taimur_Laal I quite like your videos and so I say this respectfully, but to claim that Foucault and Derrida "rejected the enlightenment project" is simply untrue - or is such an oversimplification as to have little value besides invoking recurring philosophical tribalisms. They certainly attempted to problematize or complicate the goals and methods of "the enlightenment project" (as did many enlightenment thinkers as well). But reject them? This claim comes from the children's book version of postmodernism; it's disappointing to hear otherwise careful thinkers rely on such slogans.

A rich lecture! But sir you must explain your exegetical objection of postmodernist view of power through ideology. Otherwise it makes sense especially in the context of 1st half of last century. And actually it's transformation of power through ideology within a country.
Dear sir. I hope you're doing well. Could you please recommend readings to study Modernism & Postmodernism - Theories and their proponents? I would be extremely grateful! Good day!

Sir this lecture is totally based on criticism. I am preparing for my Masters exam and currently studying Theories, Concepts and Research Methodology. It would be really appreciable if you have mentioned some text (slides) like you have mentioned in your video on Marxism.

Jis nay incoherence of philosophers likh ker puranay notions ko challenge kia? Post modernism aur Ghazali ka occasionalism jaisay concepts ka effect similar hai, agar aisa tau kia iss per video bana saktay hain
I noticed you use the word "transsexual". I don't speak Urdu unfortunately so I dont know what precise context you're using it in, but if you're talking about people who identify as a different gender to what their biology might imply, I think it's worth using the term "transgender". The distinction between biological sex (XX, XY, XXY, etc.) and social gender (male, female, Samoan fa'afafine, etc.) is essential when discussing this issue. While one may object to such a distinction, the issue simply can't be engaged with without addressing it. I'm sure you have awareness of the debate, so it seems reasonable to display that awareness through the use of terminology that engages with the ideas being discussed. Apologies if I misunderstood. Thank you for your videos.
But isn't it a surface argument that power is only through force? It sure makes sense if we just refer to history, however, it becomes weak if we talk about today, i.e. language, symbols, rhetoric, both complexly rational and deeply emotional, are being used to gain that force and hence power.
I don’t speak this language but I’m interested in his perspective from his English content. Maybe someone could subtitle this in English someday
