Yup. The M38 uses a pin attached to the frame and a mount on the grill that is similar to the tailgate hinge. Whereas the CJ2a CJ3a us a conventional body mount type bracket with a bolt going vertically through the grill and bracket. We'll likely end up trying to either fab a CJ2a style mount or maybe try getting some reproductions and see if they'll fit on top of the frame or can be modified to work.
I believe that the M 38 would have a hinged grill , so the mounts would definitely be different.

Indeed. Not much there that was worth trying to save. It’ll be better to start fresh with that painless kit.
