Here is a free tip, make 1 or 2 “studs” to screw into the crank to guide heavy objects on. Once you slide it on you can install a couple of bolts and then unscrew the studs and replace with the correct bolts. I work by myself all the time and its like having a third hand.

When I was a teenager working at my
uncle’s large greenhouse buisness, he had a Hyster that was at least 60 years old at the time. I remember asking why he had that very old ratty looking forklift rather than a shiny Toyota or something new, especially given that they had lots of other new equipment. He had suggested that as long as his resourceful local mechanic was alive the machine would run essentially forever, so he had zero incentive to change it. There basically wasn’t anything on that forklift that could break that couldn’t be fixed. Basically everything else was so overbuilt and simple that if you just used the machine as intended it, only standard wear items would require replacement basically indefinitely.

That giant Forklift looks a lot like one we used to have at work. I don't know exactly what brand it was but it was bigger than this one. It had 20" wheels with foam filled tires that weighed at least 500 pounds each, and it had 4 since it was a dually. I was told by the boss it used to be in the army and it was from the 1950s. It had a Ford inline 300 6 powering it and the transmission had a high and low range.
The thing was totally sketch to drive, power steering wasn't the best, the brakes didn't work at all unless you pumped the pedal twice, then it could easily skid all 4 drive wheels to a stop. The engine was really tired and worn out, it barely ran and died a lot and was always difficult to start.
One day the drive axle destroyed itself, it looked like someone had set explosives off in it. Everything was destroyed beyond recognition, even the axle housing got some pretty serious gouges carved into it. Since finding that exact axle wasn't possible we needed something else. I found an old 1967 Ford F-600 tow truck that was totally rotted out and hadn't ran in years. But it's rear axle looked pretty similar to what the forklift had. So I removed it and swapped it into the forklift. The pinion was a little longer on the replacement axle so we had the drive shaft shortened. Everything worked great except forward was now reverse and reverse was now forward. That got it a few more years of life until it was becoming too worn out and we eventually scrapped it.
But when the thing was up and running it was great. It could easily lift full size semi truck trailers off the ground. The reason we got rid of it was it almost always had something wrong preventing it from being used.

Ya done good! When you mentioned that sometimes it’s easier to line up the clutch to accept the trans input shaft by eye, it brought back a memory from 1960, working on my 1953 Jaguar XK120. The driven disc destroyed itself when making a moderate rpm upshift.
My Jaguar mentor loaned me a toward made specifically for the car model. With the car parked in front of my parent’s house I removed the trans & clutch.
This was done after the seats, floor boards & trans tunnel were removed.
I bought a new clutch & driven disc, & had the flywheel resurfaced and was waiting for my mentor, Dave to get home from work so I could borrow an input shaft to align the clutch. I had a few hours to kill, so I eyeballed the clutch spline to the pilot hole in the crank. I was sure it was good, but not wanting to damage the disc in case it wasn’t perfectly aligned. When Dave got home I borrowed the input shaft/alignment tool and tried it out. That thing slid all the way through the splines and into the pilot hole in the crank. It was perfect! I wasted several hours waiting for a tool I didn’t need.
Merry Christmas to you, your wife & son.

I’d say You did pretty good and didn’t have to work on it for a week, which is also good. 👍. I remember the rabbit video. That would be a good unit to hang onto for only one reason. That young fella will be able to reach the pedals before You know it. Would be a great buggy for him to learn the 3 pedal skills in. Other than that, I wouldn’t consider putting any $$ into it. I’d pretty much gar un tee it’s pretty low on compression and the injection pump is pretty much spanked. I have a lot of experience with those. Couldn’t find the Patreon link so I just spend $50 CAD on some rather remarkable stickers instead.
I’m at the point in my career where I believe there is literally no point in lifting or manipulating heavy stuff manually. I use a winch, chain fall, come along, lever hoist, block and tackle, hydraulic jack, anything really that keeps the wear and tear off my body. I work with people who aren’t even 40 and have done permanent damage to their bodies. Knees, backs, shoulders, hands… they are expensive to repair and can be FUBAR’d pretty quickly. It’s possible I’m just a lazy or wimp maybe 🤷‍♂️.
I know from watching your videos that you’re incredibly intelligent, so I’m not for a second telling you how to do your thing. Im just sharing my perspective.

Pretty nice old forklift. Thanks for the Videos. It never fails, try to help someone or something out and end up stuck or broke. I have a few of those stories too. You and your family have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

I have to the say the reenactment of getting that unloaded really had me at the edge of my seat! I thought for sure it was a broken crankshaft. You lucked out! Great video, Wes. Merry Christmas to you and your family.

Wes, I love the fact you got an absolute win!! Good on you!
I don’t know why, but I’d sure like to see you address the remaining issues and get that thing in a better state!
Merry Christmas to you and your family!

Hey, I had that Linde forklift toy from Bruder when I was a kid!
Gave it and the like 30 other Bruder toys I had away to a children in need organization before I moved to the US.
    Nice seeing one again.

Found it at the local farm supply store a few years ago. My son and nephews love it.

It's crazy that we have a Clark at work that is massively larger than this machine, but is only rated for 17k lift capacity. Great score on this machine Wes!

Ratings are kinda weird for large forklifts.

Man I love those old hysters. Had to pull an injection pump, have it rebuilt, and reinstall it on a four cylinder turbo Perkins. I fell in love with the Perkins after that.

Hey Wes, when I first started the video I thought to myself. Damn this guy loves punishment. Then I see the broken bolts and I thought, I just love it when a plan comes together. Nice job my friend and Merry Christmas.
