KAR--Kenneth Fingerlos, April Fingerlos, and Roy Grimm--are Jeep enthusiasts from the Denver area. Almost every weekend, you can find these three in the Fingerlos Shop, building one rig or another. They have a slew of upcoming projects planned!
All three are software and database engineers by day, and play with Jeeps on the weekends. Because of their three full-time software industry jobs, you won't see the intensity of builds you'll see in other channels, but this does mean you'll see real-world, everyman wheeling. And some cool stuff, like Kenneth's M715 build.
Their videos are presented for entertainment purposes only. They invite you into their shop to show you what they do to build on their own rigs. They are not a commercial shop. They love to share experiences, but the information provided is to be used at your own risk.

Reassembly Plan, Killer Dowel Pin, and Injection Pump Install
Come on, 1st Gen Cummins? You knew a Killer Dowel Pin video was coming. This is considered a must-do if your Cummins is ever torn down to this extent. It would be a shame if one little piece of metal decided to evict itself and destroy your engine rebuild efforts!
But first, Kenneth's reassembly plan is discussed. He goes over what he tentatively plans to do for each side of the engine.
One video prior to this one in the playlist is Kenneth performing some injection pump upgrades from The Hungry Diesel. That freshly-upgraded injection pump gets reinstalled onto the engine to wrap up this video.

The Hungry Diesel Injection Pump Upgrades for a 1992 Cummins
Переглядів 338День тому
With a kit from The Hungry Diesel, Kenneth made a couple key upgrades to the 1992 Cummins motor going into the M715. This is an optional step in the engine reassembly process, but it's one Kenneth sees good value in doing. The Governor Spring upgrade increases the ability of the engine to rev to 3200rpm. The Fuel Pin is shaped differently than stock. The pin is also cut with a "flat" ramp desig...

First-Gen Cummins Fan Pulley Bearing Replacement Without a Hammer

Kenneth is working to get the M715's 1992 Cummins 6BT reassembled. Most of it is painting parts, spending money on parts, and keeping track of boxes from Brown Santa and his friends. But in this one task, Kenneth wanted to share a hammer-free video on how to replace a fan pulley bearing. This is a task that uses a specialty tool, linked below. The Cummins Is Back From the Machine Shop!

Kenneth was grinning from ear to ear when he brought home the refurbished 1992 Cummins 12-valve for the M715 project! But once it was home, it was time for two people to unload it. Plan A didn't work out, and Plan B needed some creativity. Kenneth also goes over some of what the machine shop found within the engine, making him very glad he didn't try to reseal it himself.
Dana 80 Hub Rebuild and Brake Upgrade for the M715

Prior to 2001, Dodge used drum brakes on the rear axle of the Ram pickups. For 2003 and newer, they switched to an AAM rear axle that had disc brakes. Realizing this difference, Kenneth chose to source a 2003 Dodge Single Rear Wheel (SRW) Dana 80 axle with a manual transmission from a Dodge Ram. These disc brakes also make getting factory parts much easier. Then he upgraded those brakes to even...

Kenneth has made the decision to take the Kaiser M715's intended first-gen 1992 Cummins 12-valve to a shop. While he could go through it himself, he's willing to bring in the experts on something this important. His goal is longevity and ease of later service as well as having a pretty engine in his cool truck! Besides, if you go back into this playlist and see the muddy axles, you can see why ...

Hang out with Kenneth in this video he could use the company!

That Video Where The Entire Build Plan Got Thrown in the Trash

Really, it did. Kenneth and April have realized that the Jeep known as Lemonhead is not going to work for them. Well, some of it will, but there are significant parts of it that won't. This should help explain the last video the Road Trip to BC Vintage Jeeps. Farm Truck Axles Are Definitely Harder to Rebuild!
When I rebuilt the 12v for my Ramcharger project I used Cummins industrial beige. I thought it look awesome.
I thought its the 24v with the dowel pin issue
You forgot to lock the pump. And DON'T wiggle the injectors. You can shear/damage the locating pins .
Fair point about the pump - In this case I knew that I was sending the pump out to be rebuilt and so locking it wasn't strictly necessary. But yes, if we were going to reinstall it then ensuring that it doesn't move out of time via the locking bolt is critical. As for the injectors yes, need to be careful to not apply too much force. Thanks for watching!
Very nice jeep build but one question, why don’t you just get a hard top for it?
Preference and budget--meaning, I don't want to buy a replacement hard top every year! I wheel pretty hard--8s, 9s, and 10s. Hard tops will get damaged on some of the trails. If you happen to see the recent Independence Trail video (Part 2), you'll see where I would have destroyed the hard top on that v-notch turn. So, a soft top and no windows is a bit more, well, safe isn't the word, but you get what I mean. One thing I would need to do if I were to start doing WeROCK with Penny is to get an aluminum skin top. Genright sells that, too, but I couldn't fit it in the budget at that time. I really like Penny being open. I admit, the fuel pump right behind the seats is kinda loud, but it is what it is.
Here's a link to the top I'd like to switch to, if/when I destroy the soft top... genright.com/shop-by-vehicle/jeep-tj-97-06/tj-yj-cj-7-aluminum-roof-for-genright-roll-cages/?srsltid=AfmBOorz4fpRbz33A2Fw_6yn52d9XUdKIdb0V0P207m16pBN-UHIrDUo
I have had well nut failure on other things I have used them on before. I used M10 rivnuts since the holes in the bracket are pretty large.
Good to know it's not just us! Yeah, we suspect that it may have a bit more noise hard mounted to the body but also it's also bit more solid. Thank you for watching!
Hell of an engine!!!!!!
It is indeed. Everything is large and heavy compared to typical jeep stuff.
I guess me and my wheeling buddies are asses we don't spot you got yourself into it get your self out lol
What brand is your bearing driver set? It looks to be a nice set.
It's sold on Amazon by PMD Products. There's a link to it at the end of the Description, but also: a.co/d/bmoKLpf. Thanks!
As a quick follow-up to this. We've determined that the engine in the vehicle is the Buick 198ci odd-fire v6, produced in 1961-1962. The flywheel, clutch, bellhousing on these engines/applications is unique and different from that used on later 225ci engines.
Very helpful video thanks, i have this job to do on my CRD.
You're welcome and thank you! It's not a terrible job, give yourself time and be patient. There a few nuances specific to the CRD and how stuff "fits" with the little diesel but it's very doable.
This is insane and some wildly technical crawling, you kinda rock lol 😅
Aww... thanks! I really prefer the technical trails. I'm starting to mull over Penny and I's trail goals for 2025, and it's filled with hard stuff! The only definite so far is 21 Road to the End. We'll see what else gets added.
Heck yeah!! Great video!
We’re glad you enjoyed it!
That is known as a Long Style clutch. Usually found on Ford products as G.M. and Chrysler typically used a Borg and Beck Style.
That’s actually helpful. We’ve had a couple others suggest a 1949-1964 Ford clutch as a possibility. Hopefully we’ll find something we can source locally that will match up.
I really enjoyed this video, thank you for sharing! I wish I could help you with more information on the clutch but all I can say is it looks quite similar (but smaller) to the clutch in my 1973 International Harvester pickup.
Thank you! It's amazing how many parts from one vehicle show up in another.
I've had more than one Jeep with the 225 Dauntless V6, they were fun to drive! It runs well, lots of power, lighter weight than many 4 cyls, and it's a actual Jeep engine. Do a simple refresh/rebuild and keep it in a Jeep.
Good chance we’ll do just that. Though some debate if it’ll go back into this jeep or the other CJ2A project. But the fact that it runs, and is already mated to the T90 certainly makes it an easy/cheap option. Though for the other project I’d love to source an L-134 just to be “completely correct.”
Hell yeah. we all love shop dogs
Also that electrical was crazy!
Indeed. Not much there that was worth trying to save. It’ll be better to start fresh with that painless kit.
Great video, you guys are awesome! Just curios, why was that right side turn signal hosing bit? Was it cut with shears?
Thank you! Kinda looked like maybe it was cut with a torch.
@@karoffroad ahh I see, that would explain the irregular cuts!
I believe that the M 38 would have a hinged grill , so the mounts would definitely be different.
Yup. The M38 uses a pin attached to the frame and a mount on the grill that is similar to the tailgate hinge. Whereas the CJ2a CJ3a us a conventional body mount type bracket with a bolt going vertically through the grill and bracket. We'll likely end up trying to either fab a CJ2a style mount or maybe try getting some reproductions and see if they'll fit on top of the frame or can be modified to work.
Boston Bob is a good guy!
This was great! I think I am going to try a mixture of this and using a pressure washer to blast out the rust as well. I also will finish with a coat of fluid film and try and re-coat once a year.
That should work well! I can't remember if it made it into the video, but one thing we have learned is, finish your welding and cutting first, if possible. The heat melts that internal frame coating easily. Or, keep a can handy and remember to reapply when the metal is cool again. Also, I was able to clean up any drips on the concrete with brake cleaner. Have fun!
I'm thinking you could make some tubular seat mounts sort of like the original style that would extend from in front of the tank to behind it. That way you could use a seat adjuster track. Of course that would be after you clearance the fenders>
That would definitely work! I know we're way behind on getting a video out, but you'll see kinda where we're going in a few videos. We made a pretty big decision that does impact the seat mount design, but that's how it goes sometimes. I'll get back to editing just as soon as I can!
I found that I had the most accurate measurement if I use the calibration standards supplied with the kit (open, short load), and at the end of the test cable I hooked to the antenna cable. At the UHF frequencies, I've found that the test cable length can change the measurements, and have found that it is important to calibrate using the frequency range I want to employ to measure.. Interesting video... Regards
4 psi? That's very low isn't it? Sand maybe but rocks... Guess I'll watch and learn 😊
Sounds like it would be, right? But for the Mickey Thompson MTs and Dirty Life Roadkills on her, it just seems to work. She is light enough that she doesn't really flex the sidewall until about 7psi, and doesn't really get any useful flex until 5 or 6. They had me try 4psi on Carnage Canyon, and she worked a lot better toward the end of the trail than at the start. Another time, I did run one series of trails with one rear tire at 0psi in Ouray--I didn't get the valve core in all the way at air-down. Lasted the entire day, and I never even noticed it until air-up. I'd never go that low without beadlocks, though, and even then, differences in tires and wheels would require some experimentation to find out what's possible for an individual rig. It might work for one, but not another.
@@karoffroad thanks for the insight. The beadlockers are probably the thing that makes it work. ✌️
First view, First like, First comment. Love from Meghalaya, India❤

Best decision we made! Can't wait to follow it up with the Front Half Kit, but that's still a year or two away.
@@karoffroadawesome can’t wait to see the front section go in !
Looks like you got over the trail clean with out any trouble. Good times you will remember for years. Years back I was part of the work party for 10 years or so. We would cut all the fire wood for the cooks and camps. I'm the one who built (WOODYVILLE) I "m not sure if it still there. I think all together I went 15 times in my 46 willes I would have to go count all the dash plaques .Well thanks for the video it brought back fun memories . 🤠Johnnycat >-W-> Hangtown ca
You comment warms our hearts! The next video show quite a bit of Rubicon Springs (and then Cadillac Hill). I can still remember all that cut wood--and how much of it went to preparing that incredible steak dinner! I'd like to try this trail some day in my CJ2A, but that's a year or so off at the very least. We really do want to go back and experience the trail again!
This is excellent! Just what I was looking for! Thank you from over the pond
That’s some nice brakes I used the f350 setup on mine but this looks a lot nicer and easier.
Thanks! This is the same setup on Penny, too. And this is just this end of the brake system--the M715 will also be getting the same Vanco Hydroboost setup Penny currently has. Stopping will not be an issue, for sure!
@@karoffroad I’m going tons on my gladiator soon and I’ve had a couple people tell me to run the hydroboost setup apparently it’s the hot ticket for braking tons. I got to see if my shop has one I can try out as I’ve never used that setup before. My xj was just running the ford brakes and an adjustable proportioning valve.
The hydroboost setup was new to me (April), too. The first time I hit the brakes hard on Penny in the pasture during testing, she was like Wile E Coyote hitting a brick wall. I must have happy-giggled for 10 minutes at the sheer fun of it. It took a little bit to get used to, but I absolutely love it on her now.
the springless design is so much nicer in the long run. only upgrade I made besides that was the bronze upper bushing so it can take a little more abuse.
Yeah, I debated a bit both for the 715 and for PennyTJ if we wanted the bronze bushings or not. Honestly the fact that the standard bushings were part of the kit and the bronze would have been extra won out. When the standard bushings wear out we’ll likely upgrade.
@@KAFingerlos the plastic will probably live forever honestly.
Nice video...when using bearing remover should have race on cone and both threaded rings should be inside clam shell..on tight bearing it would have damaged tool..rollers are what pulls race up and race holds them against and rings hold race in position
Thank you. I've never tried assembling it that way. Will have to try that configuration next time.
👍
Nice video. Happy birthday 🎉.
it's much less of a problem to go through the top, you just have to remove the fan
Agreed. it is simpler to access it, though still takes some work to actually get things such that the rack can come out. Just not a lot of room for anything around the CRD engine.
Very well done! Thanks for doing this
We're glad you enjoyed it!
I've been waiting for this video! Love it!
Yay! Thank you!

My (April) dad and his brother were total gear heads when I was a kid. I have been around timing lights forever it seems, but I never learned how to use it. It was kinda fun to learn!
You're giving me flashbacks to "helping" my dad work on the '69 Rambler (that I eventually drove). I'm sure his timing light is still in the garage somewhere.
Fun times, sad times, poor penny
We had her up on the lift yesterday, and it looks like the damage was pretty minimal, as things go. Parts have been ordered, and I'll share the details in a future video. But indeed, fun times! She'll be back on the rocks really soon.
it's not fun if you aren't pushing it hard enough to break something.
You know, you're right! I LOVE the technical aspect of wheeling. I so wish I could get into WeRock! I think that would be a perfect fit for my style. A girl can dream... As I think about it, this was not her worst trail breakdown. You know the stock three-piece steering column on these TJs... well, one of the u-joints fell apart on a TWO rated trail. She was loaded onto a trailer to get off that one, and all I really needed was a new bolt and a clockspring to get her going again. But this time, I was still able to drive her onto the trailer. That's sort of why Lemonhead is an up and coming project--because Penny's worst breaks are on those low-rated trails! LOL!
looks like a great time
I am already looking forward to conquering this trail again--including The Cutoff! I just have to wait for Roy to get his MJ done so I have someone to run it with! And our friend Matt Ness ran it for the first time yesterday, and loved it--I bet he'd join us, too.
love the shop
Thanks! We originally set it up as a wood shop. It wasn't until 5 or 6 years after buying the property that we changed from wood to automotive. And, 14 years later, that transition is still occurring... ;-) I have watched a lot of shop organization videos, and want to help Kenneth get it organized, but there are some piles I just don't want to get involved in... ;-)

Awww, thank you! I likely will not be at All-4-Fun myself, but Kenneth will be serving as a trip leader. We leave for the Rubicon very shortly after that event wraps up. If I go, it's probably be because I couldn't resist the allure of Carnage Canyon!
