Wow, my buddy had one of these when we were in high school. Interior looked so futurist back then. Lost control of it one morning in the rain when we were on the way to school and almost rolled it. Memories. lol
They are three valve engines. The third valve is called the MCA-Jet valve. They tend to stick open and are commonly eliminated with a kit. I had to replace the valve seals on mine and installed the jet valve elimination kit to make it a 2 valve. I just searched and the kits are still readily available. Just look for 2.6 Jet valve elimination kits.
@ I think the most I put on one in a year is 2 thousand. It’s really hard to put more than 500-1000. On my 83 mustang with 35k miles I put 500 on it in two years. My 67 fairlane with 18k miles has had 240 miles or so in 5 years. I just only take them out for shows and out of all of mine. My 71 torino gets the most seat time
Regarding the buckle in the tail lamp/rear quarter. It should be flat, I referenced many online photos, its not a factory dent, but I appreciate your optimism, & its still a very nice car. My guess is the car was backed into a garage shelf or something, where it hit just above the tail lamp, just hard enough to buckle that area locally. You can see a little witness dent in the yellow reflections in that area.
He looks like a buckle from a human being falling into it by falling off a ladder. You can clearly see in the reflection there's a dimple where it got pushed in on the back side above the tail light
About 25yrs ago a friend had a machine shop and made a lot of money repairing Mitsubishi heads from the 80s and 90s. A few years later he said it was getting really hard to find heads to rebuild. They all have their issues: leaking head gaskets, valve seal leaks, dropped valves, dropped valve guides, go through timing belts, they eat timing belts faster than they should, you name it. The big one though is that there's not enough meat in-between the valves on these.2 valve hemi engines, they often crack there. Not having enough metal there also means it's, incredibly difficult to repair, and will probably crack again if it is repaired. Long story shortened... It appears there are better heads for these in the aftermarket now for cheap. I would check the casting on it, and replace it with one of those if it's an original. It's probably worth something. Being as clean as it is, it's probably already been replaced though...
They had a dark blue one at the car dealership I worked at when I was about 18/19 yrs old(1998/99)....It sat in the back, not even for sale when I worked there...I obsessed over that car... wanted it so bad
Wow what timing! I was just looking these up a few days ago. You got a hell of a deal!!! Most I saw were $10k and up! Had a buddy in high-school that had one in blue. His Turbo went out and he put on a bigger Turbo and that thing would move. He eventually blew the engine and parked it.

I had one of these. The Starion. A driver's car that was born on the race track. Unadjustable front suspension. If you tweak it it's done, got to replace it. The thing corners like a beast! And an awesome Mitsubishi stereo. Nice little car.
Look at the corner above the tail light, looks like an impact on the corner from backing into something or a slight bump up from the rear, tail light lens may have been replaced and some touch paint on the impact and buckle crack
Had a Red 88 and loved that car. Friend bought a 944 and thought it was fast. Yeah the turbo would kick in and that Conquest would just walk away from it...... Sweet cars.
I had one. Common issues were blown head gasket and turbos seal leaks. I upgraded to cometic head gasket and ball bearing turbo, full exhaust and larger downpipe. Also added a bov and varible boost controller
Those issues never go away no matter what you replace no matter how many times no matter what kind of aftermarket part it is.. you'll find out! That's why 95% of the VERY few of these cars you still see, no longer even have a Mitsubishi drivetrain in them. (It's fairly popular to drop a small block small displacement chevy or ford V8 in this car) from the testimonies of those who replaced the drivetrain they saved money over those who try to fix the original drivetrain.
I didn't see you lube the cylinders before turning it over. If its been sitting for a long time those cylinders will be dry and could score. Also that could explain low compression.
I concur. Always look for YTbers who get really old cars that sat for years to use Fogging Oil or even a few drops of oil down in the cylinders so it isn't dry starting and screwing more stuff up.
you would have to explain to me how that car was to be crushed or parted out and you saved it for 1200 bucks??? something doesn't add up. it's absolutely mint
A quick google image search of other conquests shows the rear quarter panel should not have that crease and should be smooth. Still doesn't explain what happened but proves it didn't come from the factory like that
Hey Dave nice purchase. Loved these things when they came in for service at the dealer they do have a low compression readings compared to todays engines these have hydraulic lifters and if they get left to sit they drain out and when you crank them over they fill with oil and occasionally they will pump up and hold a valve open we got these and it’s cousin the sigma with a 2ltr and a garret t03 turbo with a draw through remote carb no injection build it back to original spec good clean examples are getting hard to find even here in Australia looking forward to see this get done👍
I had a 87 Mitsubishi starion tsi in white with dark red leather. That was a sweet ride. Same car is this. I found a hood off an 83 that had the scoop. man i miss that car.
Had two, those fabric seats are rare. Most had leather seats. My 88 was the track day option car, 1” wider wheels , adjustable manual clicker struts. The thing with these cars was how the insurance company priced the risk rates so high for male teenagers. I bought mine 87 Special Edition Silver with maroon red interior leather, I bought without a co signer or any other help. Chrysler Motor Credit $384.00 a mon. for 60mons. I was 19yrs. Awesome handling cars.
Had 2 of these 20 years ago. Notorious for head gaskets blowing if ran at more than 15 lbs of boost. Most likely ur problem. Will still run fairly smoothly but blowing steam out the exhaust. Parts were scarce 20 yrs ago tho so may have a hard time finding the air dam. Good luck
I had same year/color in 1993 at 20 years old .... 50 cars later and it's still my favorite due to how hard i worked to afford it and attention it got driving it around. The car was definitely slower than it looked but whistling turbo 5 speed would spin tires and just looked better than anything in that era. I owned 1990 300z sometime after yet never had same rush of adrenaline every time I drove it around in traffic. The color was also perfect for style and curves. Still wonder if someone has it today? Dam i miss it.
I can confirm how fast his car was. Maybe it’s because before my first encounter with this vehicle and my history with fast car was limited. My friend took me out on a ride and we were going incredibly fast down a road and I was sure we were going to crash when a sharp curve on the road I’ve been on many times was just ahead but he barely slowed down and I remember saying well. This is it. I wonder if we’re going to roll off the edge. We hooked it and I remember saying to myself Damn this car is fast and scary. I have since went through many cars and currently have a 700 hp tricked out GT but the foundations of my memories still go back to that car and how it started, my journey for fast cars.
These have always been one of the top 5 I’d like to own…. As a kid I looked for them to check out finally there was one at the dealership it was over 40k plus TTT. Last year available heck of a markup or no that was a lot back then. Couldn’t even test drive it.
It looks like the buckle extends down a bit to behind the taillight bucket area. My guess is the whole top of the taillight bucket it pushed back just a hair.
In 1986 i bought an 83 dodge challenger 4cyl 5 speed. Took it Hanau Germany. Top speed was 105 mph. I bought the brother to it the Mitsubishi Sapporo. The Sapporo had slight differences that bolted on to the U.S. version. Fun cars.
You had said they had things piled up on it. Something heavy at some point may be the reason the quarter is buckled the way it is. I did notice that small point that seemed out of place on the body line and tail light just below the buckle.
A future where you Need a bicycle to back up your car?? This model of car is junk one of my buddies own two different ones years ago and it not only practically bankrupted him it ruined his marriage. Yeah I don't envy the new owner of this car... they'll find out!
Also, just from my experience, I would yank that G54B, swap in a 4G64 block with fully forged internals, a 4G63t head, find a way to adapt the original 5 speed transmission to the 2.4L block, I would put either a real MHI 20g turbo or a Garrett GTS3582 on it, a front mount intercooler, 1500cc injectors, an Infiniti Q50 throttle body, maybe a Magnus intake manifold, a 2g turbo manifold, a full 3" downpipe and exhaust, and I would either find a 1g EEPROM ECU (like I did when I built my 1990 Eagle Talon TSI AWD), or find a standalone ECU that'd be easy to tune. I have heard SOME good stories of the G54B, but not many. Edit: I never knew that these actually came with a TD05H-16G turbo from the factory. They made 176 HP and just over 200 lb ft of torque, but that's not enough for a car of that size...it'd feel much better around 250 HP...and that engine would easily make that with supporting mods. Sorry bud, I'm a dreamer and a horsepower junkie.
She’s minty fresh Dave. Those engines could take a beating. Ask me how I know. A wet compression test might give you a better sense on compression. I suspect the rings need to come back to life. Or the old Italian tune up!!! Ours had a factory leather interior. So keep an eye out for one of those. 👏👏👏🙌
I had a red 89 Conquest TSI with a black interior and a removable sunroof. That car was fun! It handled great, to me, but it really needed another 50-100 hp.
@@Junkyard_DaveIt may have been lower, but the sunroof just popped up at the back or could be taken out and put in a bag in the back like the freedom tops in a Jeep wrangler.
Hey David my Dad bought a 88 Conquest TSI 5-speed Black with the Tan leather which looked really sharp. He did a drop-in K&N and put on a manual boost controller think from HKS. Stock boost was around 9 psi he had it up to 14 with the controller. Big difference on how it ran and probably 40-50 more horsepower. My neighbor had a 5.0 Mustang (225hp) that was modified and raced my Dad from a roll and my Dad pulled away from him every time.
Ive always thought these two looked really mean, especially in full blackout. Classic 80s design, but also classic design in general. Thats why they still look good.
My girlfriend (now wife) had one in college. She thought it was the fastest thing around till we raced one night. I absolutely embarrassed her with my Mustang LX 5.0. I will say though these really were one of the best looking cars back then.
It definitely looks to me like the post up in the corner where the jack rests was tweaked and causing the problem. Surprised he didn’t see that when he was editing the video
Opening the throttlebody while doing a compression test will certainly help if the car is turning at a normal speed. You had a very very weak/slow crank over… Which you know cause you mentioned it.
The MCA jet would just snap off sometimes and when it did, it would suck oil out of the valvetrain area making you think the turbo shaft seal or a piston ring had broken. The valve wasn't hard to replace. Or you could just get the kit and eliminate them.
I sold new cars at a Chryler / Nissan dealership when those were new . We only had 1 of em and it was completley overlooked next to all the Nissan 300 ZX's . We were all amazed by it and we all looked at it and told people that it was a concept car that actually went into production . To make it look even stranger we had it parked near used red Isuzu I Mark that had red & green plastic wheel covers on it . I was there for about a year and I don't think anyone ever sold it . I did sell the Isuzu though .
Being in Australia the Mitsubishi starion is one I so want And especially what you have Dave is a late model with wide body a five stud wheels That’s a peach and $1200 wow Last time I seen one for sale here it was $18000 and is an early model
That buckle looks like it could have been done by an old school tow truck with the sling. If it was towed from the rear with the front wheels put on tow dolly the stress put on the rear of the car body can be pretty bad on the weaker body parts, which in your car is around the tail light.
I laughed when I read the title. I've owned seven starquest and it took all seven to keep one running. Bad injectors ..cracked heads do to jet valves...exhaust man
Car is a great survivor, just enjoy it! Is it possible that the quarter panel was replaced? Perhaps it's a bad seam. If its not aluminum, may be able to check w/ a magnet. Hopefully I'm wrong.
I was one that suggested maybe something in the trunk area had done the damage from inside . I guess that or the jack causing it is debunked. Like some have said maybe just a small area was lightly hit or caught and caused it. Or as Dave says a strange panel defect that failed after time 🤔.
I’ve had two of these and I love them. But there’s a reason why it hasn’t ran in ten years. Let’s hope it never overheated. Because if it did you might as well do a head gasket and there’s no cracks
This car has 99.9% to do with Mitsubishi and only 0.1% to do with Chrysler. Japanese parts from top to bottom. Hell, I bet the Chrysler badges were made in Japan as well.
I have an 89 Conquest. Still original paint. 77k. Paid $250. Said it wouldn’t start. Was the fuel pump. Sold the original engine/trans. 4g63 swapped it. Still has AC, PS.
This engine is a Mitsubishi Forklift engine. You can find parts for these in the industrial sector. My son just worked on the Dodge version. That is where he found the parts. Good luck with this cream puff.

I raced one of these back in 1995 on the freeway. He passed my 280z at 115 mph. Decent cars!
Just sitting here patiently waiting for a shot of the side so we can see what the panel should look like.
It should be flat
Did you compare to other side, Was it a flaw from factory that finally showed through with the flares being installed?? I am perplexed!
I owned one in college. My favorite car
This will be cool to see and hear, nice looking cars
These have always been one of the top 5 I’d like to own…. As a kid I looked for them to check out finally there was one at the dealership it was over 40k plus TTT. Last year available heck of a markup or no that was a lot back then. Couldn’t even test drive it.
Interesting color. looking forward to next video
I've always loved these! They were over priced and unreliable, but I still wanted one!
Man these and starion where so awesome back in the day always wanted one. Restore it please .
It looks like the buckle extends down a bit to behind the taillight bucket area. My guess is the whole top of the taillight bucket it pushed back just a hair.
I love the conquest it was way ahead of its time
In 1986 i bought an 83 dodge challenger 4cyl 5 speed.
One of the fastest and most radical cars you don't know about. In it's day, it was like stepping into the future
I'm tall so I like hard tops the sunroof and t top cars always have a lower headliner
One of the women I worked with back in the 1990's had a red one of these. They almost look like a 3rd gen 82-85 Celica hatchback.
Sort of but the Celica's have that weird marker light
Ive always thought these two looked really mean, especially in full blackout.
Classic 80s design, but also classic design in general. Thats why they still look good.
Friend of mine had the turbo Daytona that looked like this! Always thought it was ugly but the car was quick!
This was my very 1st car after hs back in 99 and 1st ownership feeling I would never ever 4get for $500
Great channel put a up grade turbo tubular, manifold, and four injectors and a nice big cooler great build for the channel bless
My girlfriend (now wife) had one in college. She thought it was the fastest thing around till we raced one night. I absolutely embarrassed her with my Mustang LX 5.0. I will say though these really were one of the best looking cars back then.
Ooooooh yea can't wait to see her on the road.....did you figure out the crease on the rear quarter??
The Conquest was and still is such a cool car
👍🏻😎I had a 86 model that I bought brand new except it was red.
I love the style of this car. You should drop a new turbo and exhaust system in this thing.
Better yet - get better tools! Never trust uc-deus. From my perspective, snap-on makes better stuff. (Joke)
Could buckle have been caused by the jack being overtightened in place?
It definitely looks to me like the post up in the corner where the jack rests was tweaked and causing the problem. Surprised he didn’t see that when he was editing the video
Great paint match, weird quarter panel repair/replace?
Im going to pull the tail light and then see if I can figure out what is going on with that buckle
Opening the throttlebody while doing a compression test will certainly help if the car is turning at a normal speed. You had a very very weak/slow crank over… Which you know cause you mentioned it.
these cars were cool as heck back in the day and have aged very well.
My mate had a starion I think it was a 2.6 engine fitted it was a wide body one in red,he had it for years never missed a beat
Woohoo my favorite Mitsubishi! Go Dave!
The MCA jet would just snap off sometimes and when it did, it would suck oil out of the valvetrain area making you think the turbo shaft seal or a piston ring had broken. The valve wasn't hard to replace. Or you could just get the kit and eliminate them.
I just took the turbo apart and it was definitely a bad turbo
I sold new cars at a Chryler / Nissan dealership when those were new . We only had 1 of em and it was completley overlooked next to all the Nissan 300 ZX's . We were all amazed by it and we all looked at it and told people that it was a concept car that actually went into production . To make it look even stranger we had it parked near used red Isuzu I Mark that had red & green plastic wheel covers on it . I was there for about a year and I don't think anyone ever sold it . I did sell the Isuzu though .
That car was just right for that time in car history
That's my favorite car all time.
Being in Australia the Mitsubishi starion is one I so want
And especially what you have Dave is a late model with wide body a five stud wheels
That’s a peach and $1200 wow
Last time I seen one for sale here it was $18000 and is an early model
Yeah its crazy how hard they are to find but sometimes you get lucky
That buckle looks like it could have been done by an old school tow truck with the sling. If it was towed from the rear with the front wheels put on tow dolly the stress put on the rear of the car body can be pretty bad on the weaker body parts, which in your car is around the tail light.
Yeah it could be I need to get the car on the lift and check it out
My Friend Had The Mitsubishi Version of This Car They Are Awesome 💯
Thats gorgeous
Thanks
I laughed when I read the title. I've owned seven starquest and it took all seven to keep one running. Bad injectors ..cracked heads do to jet valves...exhaust man
There's a preacher here where I live who has one with a 340 swap that is a nice looking little car that one would look good with a hell cat swap
Jesus Christ
Been looking for one of these forever had a 87 5 speed
Yeah they are getting hard to find in decent condition
Car is a great survivor, just enjoy it! Is it possible that the quarter panel was replaced? Perhaps it's a bad seam. If its not aluminum, may be able to check w/ a magnet. Hopefully I'm wrong.
It doesn't look like it has been repaired just by how the paint cracked on the buckle
My neighbor had the Conquest and I had the Starion back in 86
good luck on parts.. the rear diff extension tube is no longer made, if it's worn you're screwed.
I was one that suggested maybe something in the trunk area had done the damage from inside . I guess that or the jack causing it is debunked. Like some have said maybe just a small area was lightly hit or caught and caused it. Or as Dave says a strange panel defect that failed after time 🤔.
Yeah something happened ill figure it out after I get her running
I remember a friends father had a Starion was the first turbocharged car ever seen.
I’ve had two of these and I love them. But there’s a reason why it hasn’t ran in ten years. Let’s hope it never overheated. Because if it did you might as well do a head gasket and there’s no cracks
SCORED nice color Two 👌
Great video! Good luck with the car! I'm a new subscriber!
