I stumbled across this channel, and I am so glad that I did! I have built a lot of ARs in a lot of calibers and have rebuilt 1. That 1 was a .458Socom that my brother purchased, and it would not run right at all. Now, I am no expert by any stretch, but my basic machining skills are okay, and my common sense is better than most. The easiest part was determining that the made in 2021, Bear Creek Arsenal 458socom was at best garbage tier and at worst dumpster fodder. It was way over-gassed, the springs were pretty much all too light or not long enough and fully assembled it jiggled like jello. The extractor had been made with a .223 extractor using a dremel and the feed ramps came to a hard stop at the barrel extension. I went through it changed out what I could and fixed what I could fix. The chamber was really bad and I was able to polish that and the extension feed ramps. This was all very basic stuff, nothing good or great about what I did, but it was better than it was and it ran. I just wish that I knew two years ago half of what I have learned from this channel in 2 weeks!

Have you ever tried using an electric soldering iron to heat up screws with threadlocker on it instead of a blowtorch, i think it allows for more protection from damage
I've heard of tips and tricks where home machinists cobble together unique tips for soldering irons. I know that gunsmithing operations cannot necessarily afford the tools and equipment we use for professional applications. I use a portable inductive heater, instead of a torch when possible. It is only $600 for the generic kit, and we can make specialty inductors in house. It provides a very focused and controlled kilowatt to the assembly or part. It is super easy to follow OSHA hot work rules, and smoke emissions are minimized. I usually get called names, but that is how we do it professionally. Torches can work. MAPP gas works better than propane. Rosebud tips work well for Oxy/Acetylene torches. Another option may be to put it in an oven. We use process furnaces, although it is possible to use a residential oven. As a Loctite certified engineer, note that 99.8% of all gun and gun accessory manufacturers use the wrong Loctite product or use Loctite in the wrong joint design. I guess it's personal preference on whether to break the finish on melonited bolt carriers wtih heavy staking, or preserve the finish with moderate staking? Seems to me that solid staking would be better given the heft of a bolt carrier. I'd never considered that as a drawback to that finish.
The issue isnt breaking the finish, its actually breaking some of the metal off. Nitriding can make metal more “brittle” and if you tried to stake it heavily the bit of metal you are trying to push into the bolt head could fracture.
@@boinger1988 idk. I bought a Colt upper a few weeks ago and I need to take the time out of my day to call CS. The extension bore was nowhere even close to concentric, sloppy as all hell too. Failed the fitment test and one of my 3 lowers I can fit a .030 feeler gauge in between, where my other uppers are relatively tight. In the BCG bore there's tool marks EVERYWHERE and it wouldn't bother me but they're incredibly rough. My dog bone marked upper that I got from DSA for $40 doesn't have any of these problems. Was really hoping to see the gas port size - larue doesn’t disclose and that particular barrel is rumored to be very large but most measurements are from several years ago
Really wish he showed it as well but it's understandable why he didn't. In my experience it's at least large enough that you need Sprinco Blue + H2 when using milspec ammo or maybe even H3 or H4, though I wish the data was out there on how actually big it was so I could consider installing like an BRT gas port insert or BRT gas tube.
@@stevemcafee2747 Yeah, especially considering how the tube and castle nut came out an A5 is definitely a consideration. Luckily mine didn't come out that iffy. Is this your kit in the video? @@boinger1988 idk. I bought a Colt upper a few weeks ago and I need to take the time out of my day to call CS. The extension bore was nowhere even close to concentric, sloppy as all hell too. Failed the fitment test and one of my 3 lowers I can fit a .030 feeler gauge in between, where my other uppers are relatively tight. In the BCG bore there's tool marks EVERYWHERE and it wouldn't bother me but they're incredibly rough. My dog bone marked upper that I got from DSA for $40 doesn't have any of these problems. But Colt is supposed to be "top tier". What a joke. If you buy Colt prepare to have CS on speed dial.
Little more info on the dog bone uppers, they're manufactured by Demco under a contract with the DoD. So "mil-spec" isn't an excuse, I'd love to send it to SOTAR and have it gauged just to watch him snort some BC Powder just to get through it. Damned thing should've never left the factory and it wasn't the only one I seen like this either.
I could definately see it breaking THE LOWER @ the Bolt Catch..but not ‘breaking’ the bolt catch, wouldn’t WANT to find out. I would just about bet that the newer gun owners would be more APT TO HAVE this happen than most other issue..”Dry-Firing a “set” trigger with the lowers separated”. Bet it happens MORE than we know..
Can it break over time if you threads class is poor? 15:15
59:10 later What it is ending.... Wait I have been watching for an hour? .... Another excellent educational video, with unbiased reporting of what you examined. Thank you for leading by example with quality videos that leave consumers better educated.
I expect impeccable parts from Larue the way tjey describe themselves and the way they price themselves.
Well they're not going to describe themselves as mediocre or bad
Me not even owning an AR "hmmm I need all these tools and gauges".
Id like to see how Blackout Defense holds up!
why are Larues so very heavy
elisco ?
“That was my elbow it hurt pretty bayad” 😂😂😂😂😂
Let’s see a Q manufacturing and Primary Weapons Systems autopsy. You’ll need some specialty tools probably.
12:42 ouch, terrible castle nut. Honestly everyone should just use FCD castle nuts.
🦆
FCD? castle nuts Got this www.forwardcontrolsdesign.com/CNF-Castle-Nut-Forward-Controls_p_103.html but not sure if that was what you meant.
@@ablemagawitch yep, that one.

@@DACFalloutRanger Thank you
Gutentight......... I see that you're a man of good taste too.
Edit: Steve1989 too!? Next you'll start talking about our Lord and Saviour, Gun Jesus!
Alright. Nice.
Wondering why having a gun part that is slightly magnetized matters
So brass shavings during extraction don't stick.
As a decendent of Germans, i approve of the German method (as i roll on the floor laughing)
Was really hoping to see the gas port size - larue doesn’t disclose and that particular barrel is rumored to be very large but most measurements are from several years ago
I was hoping for the same, but I respect Chad’s judgement in not pulling it off.
Depending on Larue’s answer, I may just put an A5 system on it. It’ll largely depend on how receptive they are to righting this issue.
@@stevemcafee2747 Yeah, especially considering how the tube and castle nut came out an A5 is definitely a consideration. Luckily mine didn't come out that iffy.
Is this your kit in the video? If so, did you notice that your bolt catch pin is a bit large? Maybe it's just the lower receiver I'm using, a Zev/Mega, but holy crap I've never encountered a harder bolt catch pin before. I got it in far enough that it's crossed the channel into the other side but it's still not flush.
@@Ghost17110 Wait, you're kit came with an A5? I'll have to see. I've not actually had this kit in my hands yet. I had it shipped to another address while I waited on an SBR to get approved and had it shipped directly from that address to Chad. I thought this was a standard carbine length buffer system.
Man, my only complaint is I wish you had a capture card on youe PC for when you do the bore scope... love your videos.
