My wife likes guns. She liked my AR-10 so much that its now "Her AR-10." I don't mind as much because I have another one. But my stepson like that one, so will likely take it in a few years when he's 18. That mean eventually, I'll need another AR-10. Its too bad it means I'll need to buy another rifle....
My wife loves guns. (I say she married me for the guns) Be careful what you wish for. It means you have to buy, at least, 50% more guns and 100% more ammunition. On the other hand, she never has an issue with me buying guns or ammunition. She has "acquired" several of my guns as "hers" and I actually have bought duplicates of some...otherwise I'd never get to shoot them! 😏
That’s so cool. Your wife sounds so happy. Very neat way to give her a present! Quarter from the 50s is silver. Not collectible but still worth more than a quarter. Contact me if you need one. I have several.
What a guy to surprise your wife with a Christmas present for all of UA-cam! Gotta get me a woman as happy and surprised to receive a beautiful AR as Mrs. SOTAR! Brave of you to immediately put it through an exam to point out any potential flaw in it haha
Wow!!! Just wow! Retro physical turns into a secret Santa present for the Miss... Well aren't you the sly one, the public at large witnessed the gifting... Your reciprocal socks and tie are under the tree love.
There's a recent interview on Forgotten Weapons with a Brownell's guy about their retro rifles. He gives some insights on the decisions they mad to build them.
Clearly because the AR platform has gone BACKWARDS. The charging lever under the carry handle is so much better. The rear charging handle is the worst feature on an ar.
That's so cool! such a neat piece of history for your wife's Christmas present. Thanks for taking one of these rifles apart for a physical. I'm a big fan of Brownells and think their Retro line is awesome! Merry Christmas to you and your lucky wife!
I can't help but to think what the difference would be if Brownells knew it be going to SOTAR... Amazing knowledge you share with us my friend. Thank you kindly and Happy Holidays...
Merry Christmas Chad and Donna, I sincerely appreciate all you both do for us. Stay safe and healthy! Great video you make these things look so easy. I gasp when you take the fire control group out and it takes you 1/2 second to put back in...I will be in your class someday hopefully soon sir!
If you want this to look even better contact John Thomas @ retroarmsworks and have him paint your stock set. I have one set he did and it looks like it came out of the Vickers book, the job was not cheap but in spite of that I will be sending my retro AR-10 stock set in after the holidays.
Love your videos! ive learned so much in a short time. Even after having over 197,000,000 hours cleaning M4’s and (what I thought was) maintenance in the army. 😂 keep them coming!
So I bought my wife a Springfield saint railed model about a year ago. She's never fired it and I'm hoping to get in a class with her. The other day I bought a Midwest URR to do a little gauging like shown here. The reaction rod won't even start to insert into the locking lugs. Bolt seems to cycle fine and it chambers a round. I guess contact Springfield? But man am I appreciative of the things I learn here. Thank you for the knowledge and your wife for excellent camera work.
sounds like a clocked barrel to me, happens when there is enough slop between the barrel extension and upper receiver when being installed. check again with the assembled BCG and slowly push it into battery. if i am right it should hit slightly then the bolt will start to rotate then continue into the barrel extension and lock. if you have the tools i would just undo the barrel nut and re-align the assembly then with your reaction rod installed then tighten the barrel. if that does not seem to be in your wheelhouse then send it in.
@@jacksonblanks8038 thanks. Never put a upper together but have been assembling all the tools necessary. From what I'm hearing Springfield is not doing such a bang up job lately and I prefer to fix things myself anyway.
@@take1one I would see about a warranty exchange or repair. If it's been fired I bet there are impact marks on the corners of the bolt lugs or the barrel extension. If not, they will begin soon.
I hope your wife thoroughly enjoys that rifle. I did an XM16E1 build with my lady and she was very proud of the finished product. Very cool video. I'll be sharing this one.
Pacific Tool and Gauge can let you have an extractor gauge for $99.00. Every time I watch this guy I spend more money and time on my rifles than before when I was blissfully ignorant.
Wish I got such a cool present for XMAS. And fron what Paul Levy said on a recent Forgotten Weapons interview I think you got one of the last Proto models as they are not making anymore.
I’m curious, I’m building a Colt SP1 and I can’t find one of those retro carriers for the life of me. Any tips on where I might find one, or an early BCG? Thanks much.
45:26 yeah my older Colt BCG is rough like that. I think it broke a gas key bolt… but besides that, it had a rough finishing. Tool marks, slop, all that. I was surprised.
If you can't find a silver quarter from the period, let me know. I rarely come off of silver- but this is a good cause :-) A rifle like this requires it...
Great gift for Mrs. A - I think she likes it! Nice reward for a “gun gal” doing a great job on the camera that showcases your talent and dedication to these rifles. A simple machine that requires the attention to details that can make the sum of those details an amazing firearm. I’m a real fan of the AR10’s and understand they can be a real PIA due to the variations. Do you do much with them? I love mine and would like to see some content that goes in depth the way you have with the AR15’s. That said, it’s understood with the gauging and tooling investment why you might not. I would assume many of the basic principles would still apply to “Grandaddy AR” Thanks for the knowledge you pass on!
Sitting at my computer in the morning. Saw this. Liked and commented. I'm on vacation, so now I'm gonna get back in bed and put this on the tv and enjoy lol

Not often you get to buy a rifle and the wife is happy about it.
My wife recently found out how much I spent on parts and ammo this year..... I have A LOT of Christmas shopping to do tomorrow, sigh.

Should be the same regardless of the buffer type. True TDP Rifles Buffer Systems sometimes have a larger gap from the factory though.
