I built this kit it sorts the men out from the boys, it is a great kit not for the faint-hearted nothing like Tamiya, and a real joy to build, did it with any help from youtube.
You did alright with those fit issues. I built the new Revell version of this Special Hobby kit, and had to work through these same exact fitting issues. I came real close to tossing it into the trash bin several times. I have made a series of videos of building this thing, and you will see me deal with them in much the same way you have. Where I really messed up was forgetting to install the lights on the underside of the wings! Yikes!
Thoughtful, methodical approach as usual, thank you Steve. This will save time and heartache for those of us who will build this kit! That Large Scale Planes build is available in digital book form from KLP Publishing, along with other 1/32 builds. Highly recommended, they are really well done.
Wow! I've never built a Special Hobby kit, and if I ever do, I'll know what is ahead. I'm pretty sure this kit cost quite a bit, and knowing that, I'm amazed the engineering isn't MUCH better! You have, once again, done an amazing job working the fit issues out. Very much looking forward to the next update!
Another learning experience for me. I have the Revell 1/32 Tempest to build. I have the Quinta cockpit set for it. I guess this one will be an exercise in patience for me. Well done Mr Steve.
The kit has remarkable detail and extras (resin engine etc). The fit is a nightmare! It will put your modeling skills to a test. The tolerances are ridiculously tight or even not existing in some places. Every single part needs attention so it can cooperate with the rest. But apart from the serious fit issues, the kit will produce a beautiful representation of the MkV.
It looks like the end result will be a good one, but you certainly have to work get it! Regarding your suggestion for building the wheel bays in the top wing section: Would this not make it a lot harder to get the landing gear in the correct position? You seemed to be orienting the strut mounting relative to the aperture in the lower wing. I wouldn't try a combination part top, part bottom build as there looks to be a good chance of having gaps at the ends of the walls! It also might make fitting the cockpit between the u/c bays a bit of an iffy proposition as the top wing sections could shift minutely if they are only taped in place.
I think either approach has it’s benefits and drawbacks John. assembly into the top panel would make detailing easier, my way makes alignment easier. Easier is of course a relative term when describing this kit.
I know Special Hobby kits have fit issues but this is insane. I have their 1/32 scale P-39 and I see a LOT of dry fitting when I get around to building it. I like the Tempest but I'm going to stick with the 1/48 scale kit I have in my stash. I would also like to say I admire your patience while dealing with the fit problems and with luck the rest of the build will go a lot smoother. Good luck.
It’s good exercise to tackle one of these harder kits now and again. I’ve seen the P-39 but I think it would be a while before I got to that. I have the SH whirlwind so that will come before.
Whilst it is great for experienced modellers like yourself to have a challenge with a kit Steve, how do these ever get out of the factory when they just don't fit together? If this was some sort of everyday consumer item, we'd just send it back. The box should say something like 'approximate model needing bespoke construction'! But that being said, I love watching you dealing with it.
Thanks Phil. I think Special Hobby kits are a bit more difficult than others but they do some really interesting subjects so they’re worth looking at if you’re prepared to put a bit of extra time and effort in.
I love your videos, and watch all I get! I do have a question, I ve started a tamiya kit on the Bismarck, the kit is not great, but in the paint scheme it shows Bismarck, on 18 may, as having the black and white hull stripes, but not on the superstructure? In your research, is that accurate? Thanks for your opinion, means the world to me, keep up the awesome videos!
Tough question Jeff. The ship had definitely lost her superstructure stripes by 19 May when photographed by a Bf110 over the Baltic enroute to Norway. When the stripes were overpainted I don’t know but they were present on 5th May when Hitler inspected the ship. The problem with representing the ship around this time is the air recognition markings: they changed several times over the course of just a few days around the first half of May 41. Tamiya call it wrong with dark grey - they were likely yellow on this date and were gradually overpainted at sea before she reached Grimstadtfjord. This problem is why I elected to represent the ship as sunk. The camo is more definitely understood at this point.
Couldn't help but notice the tweezer/ forceps you have, I make opthalmic surgical instruments for a living and those look very similar to what I make! , are they titanium?
Special Hobby make beutiful kits of aircraft other manufacturers avoid. They are a bit of a wrestling match at times, but we wouldnt want it handed to us on a silver platter , would we? Kits like this build character .
Hi Steve, what is the rotary tool you are using is it cordless? It seems to be quite a robust one. Great work so far on this kit, I have built it a couple of times, it does keep you on your toes.🤥😅
it’s a very old minicraft corded drill unfortunately no longer made James. I don’t know what I’ll do when it expires. You’ve built this TWICE *@*! I can’t imagine I will 😬😬
Beautiful work as always !!! can i ask where did you get the fine pointed tweezers ? i know they are surgical ones but can't find anywhere to buy a set , many many thanks ...Shaun.
I don’t think you can get them commercially unfortunately Shaun. You’d have to write to the company and see if they’d let you buy a few but I doubt it.
This kit must be a Re-box from revell ( or vice versa ) as I had all the same fit issues with my revell version . It was so bad I never did finish it and has now turn into a test mule for my paint and decals experiments .
I don’t understand kits like this. It’s obvious the manufacturer used a CAD program to design it. Did no one at any point try to put the parts together? Either in CAD software or when they got a test kit back from the mould makers? There is no excuse for a modern kit (and an expensive one) to have these kinds of fit issues.
Yeah, I've just done a special hobby airspeed oxford. overall pretty poor kit in terms of parts fitting, location points etc. Probably won't buy another.
once in a while I don’t mind tackling one of these more difficult kits. They’re a bit more of a challenge than the likes of Tamiya and the more recent ICM kits I’ve built.
How does a kit this poorly designed get into production? Did the mfr. not build a test kit out of the first molding? If they did and went ahead regardless of its imperfections, one could imagine a couple of reasons: there was no money for new molds; they bought the design cheaply from another firm and were looking to make a quick buck. What else?
Well done on a lot of problems.
Its more like a 1970's Airfix model than something made in the past few years.
It’ll come together Jerry - won’t be beaten 😂
Great explanation of the issues and fixes. I am watching this with great interest as I have the Tempest Mk II in my stash.
Maybe I should have left this in mine 😬😂
I built this kit about 4 years ago , i had all the same problems but I persevered with it and I must say it turned out great and I’m very proud of it.
Thanks Trevor that’s good to know 👍
Glad that I am choosing to watch this - I admire your approach and skills and I have the Tempest MK2 to do... So good preparation! 👍
Thank you and good luck when you come to build it 👍
Excellent detail work and explanation of the issues. Thanks
That’s ok Rich

You’re welcome 👍
I always thought the plan has the strangest looking landing gear. Great work!! Ah, the wheel placement.
Thanks Paul 👍

Oh 😬 I knew I’d probably forget as well Paul if I didn’t do it there and then
Amazing re-engineering Steve! Too bad kit manufacturers still can’t get things right in the first place. Thanks for the tips on how to handle!
You’re welcome 👍

Yes I’m finding all that to be true Kostas. I hope the end result is worth it 😬
Thank you excellent work
👍
OMG Steve, looking good but my what a job just to get things to fit, dreading doing mine when I get round to it, thanks for the heads up tho.
Hopefully this will help Kevin. Forewarned is forearmed as they say.

The worst is the wing root fit ,lots of puddy and some rescribing on the p39 but it looks fantastic when done

Fits where it touches, it'll ride up with wear! You haven't conviced me to rush out and buy one yet Steve, lol
Oh I’m sure it will turn out fine Dave. 🤔
@@TheModelShed So am I - I have every confidence in you! Proper modelling, but should it really be necessary in this day and age?
Interesting how the notched out section on the front edge of the wing is, off set to the right wing!
That’s to accommodate the asymmetrical radiator arrangement on other marks. There are two panels - plain ones for this Mk V
Great work as usual Steve. I have the earlier Special hobby boxing, and the upper wings have none of the scuffing that your wing's had?
Maybe the molds are wearing a bit by now?

Couldn't help but notice the tweezer/ forceps you have, I make opthalmic surgical instruments for a living and those look very similar to what I make! , are they titanium?
They will be their ophthalmology forceps. I don’t know if they’re titanium but they’re the best tweezers I’ve ever used.
Special Hobby make beutiful kits of aircraft other manufacturers avoid. They are a bit of a wrestling match at times, but we wouldnt want it handed to us on a silver platter , would we? Kits like this build character .
True but I'm not going to make a habit of them. A nice Tamiya or ICM fall together next I think.

@@GhostRider247 Have a look at the ANYZ 'Super Precision' tweezers. I have a pair and they're excellent.
I got same problem with P 51 Mustang by Revell.
Stick at it Michal 👍
Thanks. =)

Sorry for the late question, but what’s the spelling on those lovely clamps with the soft pads? Anyone?
CC renders them as "burner clumps." 😅

They’re a bit of a mystery to me too - nice subject though and it should look nice when it’s finished 🤞
Not a kit for the beginner….
Indeed not Paul.
Catching these off premiere "feels" odd.
I’ll try to get Part 3 on premiere this week Mac 🙏

I think it’s a combination of design and second rate molding that causes most of the issues. I suppose forewarned is forearmed.
Good God, what a mess…
It is how your brain works l built the kit best kit as good as fly hurricanes l have also done nothing like Tamiya which you can build in your sleep..
