I have this same model and it's very hard for me to get it to run. The batteries died I replaced them and now I can't get AC to turn on. Luckily it's not triple digits today.
Ya. Those things are ancient. I upgraded the thermostat & ran it all month to a comfy temp. I re-evaluated my life when I saw the electric bill. I realized I don't need a big house. I can live in a 300 sq. ft studio. That's another topic though. lol.
They have low cost thermostats u can buy at home depot which do the job. Usually just plug and play. If u try to get the fancy multiple color display thermostats, u may not have the upgraded wiring to support it.u
I recall theres a tab on the top or side of the unit to pull/remove faceplate & expose the mounting screws. Your wires should be labeled with letters. I'd recommend turning off the breaker & then replacing unit. I couldn't replace it with the cool multi color touchscreen because i didnt have a C wire & didnt want to have to fish 50 feet of new wire. I settled for the 5 day programmable honewall thermostat with the convenient big + - rubber buttons for $55-ish. It was an easy swap. I don't even use the 5 day program but perhaps it can be useful certain seasons. I was tempted to get the non programmable old school twist knob thermostat for $20 cheaper, but glad i got the honeywell. Good luck!

This is and old thermostat from the 90s how do you have it
Since 1990, 4 previous owners replaced what came with the house. However, in 2022, I spread awareness, it ends now. 🤣☺️
