I nearly didn't do this while replacing my radiator. My dad happened to call and ask how things were going when he asked if I burped the system. I had no idea what he was talking about and had to look it up. Thank God I did!
I was so upset I thought I blew a gasket after replacing the pump. Glad to learn all this!
I cannot thank you enough for this video - it saved my day! 35 years of working on cars and I had never run into this issue. My son's older (2004) Infiniti G35 had LOTS of air in the system. I used one of those funnel tools and solved the problem. I was about ready to admit defeat and take it to a shop. Not telling how much they may have charged me to fix this problem.
Great video thanks. Love the fact that you don't have loud obnoxious music in the background. Camera work, lighting and editing is on the money !
Only video on UA-cam that actually shows all the different ways to do this! Thank you
I've watched at least 10 different coolant change or flush videos to find the common steps between each video and I learn something new from each video. The thermostats needs to be installed on with hole at the top for the air to flow through was something I wouldn't have catch. Thank you so much!!
Thanks for this video..changed out my radiator first and it still was overheating after I filled it up .so I thought well must be the water pump and got another thermostat as well. Changed that and still was overheating..well guess what....I didn't let the air out. Great info and helped a lot..your guys video help me save around 2000 in labor btw..dodge ram 1500 2011..god bless you guys

The funnel he's using cost around $30. I bought a simpler one at Walmart for $3. It's just a regular funnel but with a wider outlet. It fits snuggly into most radiators, and if it's loose you can just wrap it a little with duct tape. Works real well for this job.
You can spend the saved money on girls you lucky boy
Years ago, my buddy put a new radiator in his 2000 Dodge Ram. An air pocket cost him a $4500 engine. That catastrophe made me gun-shy. This video makes me confident. Thank you.
After new radiator, hoses, thermostat, etc. you just have to be really careful the engine is cooling. Then make sure heat is working. In not too hot weather, I like to drive with heat on low and window open. If the heat quits you'll soon have an overheating engine due to inadequate fluid flow. Likely from a leak.
1A Auto is the best! These videos are so helpful! I can't even tell you how many repairs I have done using 1A Auto videos, but I just got done changing the water pump, serpentine belt, and pulleys. Thank you!
You guys @AA do good videos keep up the good work 😊 thanks.
I really liked this explanation of bleeding the coolant system, especially the part of placing the little hole in the thermostat at the top which promotes air escaping. You guys cover all the issues. I will be watching many more of your videos. Thanks.
I was just working on the system. The fluid in the overflow still boils after a water pump and thermostat replacement. Love this channel!!!!
Lots of great tips that a DIYer would miss, this channel is golden for helping DIYers do a 100% job. Thanks 🙏 it helped me out.
It's neat because they have a store on eBay that I occasionally buy from too :D
This guy is great! Thanks for showing how to vacuum a coolant system. I haven't seen it done like that before! These videos just keep getting better! Thank you!😀👍
I have air compressor shoooooooot. I choose this method even if the vehicle is easy to burp. I feel this is the easiest way and most accurate. Free minded. Gonna get on the isle create a vacuum asap.
that was a very well rounded treatment of the subject, covered all the possible situations and solutions, thank you! Some vehicles have the heater core at the highest point in the system and those can prove a little stubborn in ridding air lock. However that is usually achieved with repeated heat up and cool down with circulating coolant. Just be sure to have plenty of reservoir coolant available in the expansion bottle so that as the air is purged there is enough coolant to fill the void.
I had to replace the radiator and purge. Now my gauge barely gets past warm. So you think if I just do the purge process a few times it could relieve a block at the heater core?
50/50 mix is needed for -34F Freezing point. 33/67. It's rated to 0. Which means you still won't do damage until you get well below 0F. I live where there's almost never below 0F. I've been buying 1 gallon of antifreeze and 2 gallons of distilled water. Mixing it to get 3 gallons of 33/67 mix. I've used this for 2 decades. Never a problem. Antifreeze jugs used to have a mixture chart.
I'm just coming to upvote and comment for visibility anytime I see a video for this. I had been chasing an issue in my 2011 WRX, and it turned out to just be that boxers, and those with a TMIC in particular, have to be burped a specific way. So, yes, air can cripple your car and make you think you have a major issue. I must have just had air at the water pump or something, because I could not get any circulation, even after replacing my thermostat. Proper burp, fine.
My 97 Accord EX started to overheat when I was waiting to make a Left turn to go inside the mall parking lot, I saw smoke coming out of my hood I looked at the temperature gauge and it was maxed out all the way to the top Red line Hot. I quickly pulled over, parked my car shut the engine off looked underneath my car there was radiator fluid leaking out like a water tap. I had to call my buddy to bring me some radiator fluid and water. It turned out to be a slow leak, I still managed to drive it back home and to work the next day while monitoring the temperature gauge. As I'm halfway through my work shift fluid starts leaking out, I had a bottle of radiator fluid in my car to top up after work I got down to figuring out where the leak was coming from sure enough it was the heater core hose a tight spot to reach. There was a small pin hole inside the hose causing the fluid to leak out, after replacing the hose and topping up on radiator fluid and water it stopped leaking and the temperature gauge is where it should be at Normal.
Thanks for this info.. I'm on my way to check what you've mentioned. Thank you
I found your video trying to fix this myself b4 I go to mechanic. My dad was a master performance mechanic in drag racing world and normally i would call him. You're video was very helpful and will try this fix first. TY!
I just replaced a thermostat, the reservoir is overflowing with boiling coolant. I took it for a drive, so I am stock at a gas station with a dead battery watching this video , fun times
Thanks for showing how to use the vacuum tool. I bought one for my vw 2.5 jetta since my setup just has the reservoir tank.
I am glad that I watched this video. It shows how engineers always add a wrinkle to keep DIY guys off balance. This is a "MUST SEE" video for us car guys. Thumbs up.
And gals.
If you're doing a complete coolant flush & replacement, you need to burp the entire system by starting the engine with the radiator or container cap off. Turn the heater in the passenger compartment on so the coolant will flow to the heater core as well. Let the engine run for about 15 - 20 minutes with the cap off occasionally squeezing one of the radiator hoses in the process to "push" any trapped air in the system and get it moving toward the opening where the cap usually is. Fill the radiator with extra coolant as needed.
Thanks for the video. Everything was explained well and covered many different scenarios. Appreciate the attention to detail. MY 2018 Expedition was getting hot after I replaced the heater hoses. Tried the parking on a slant and allowed the air pockets to remove.. I also made sure to turn on the heater inside the car when I started after burping just to make sure things were flowing well. Everything is back to normal..
+@americansamiam Thanks for the feedback!
those intros are well thought out... i appreciate the effort!! great content
You Wellcome !
They should do more like that

Dude i be goin berserk too!!
BERSERK!!!
Very well explained, a lot of other demonstrations miss a lot of steps that you covered
Thank you for this. I changed my coolant on a Honda and didn't know about what you're talking about in this video. It led to ruining the auto transmission.
Excellent video ! have been struggling with my '78 chevy step van seeming to overheat for a few days .Finally concluded the problem was the gauge . But anyway this question of burping the system was part of the equation so this is vey helpful .
super helpful and still have a question, if it still overheats after you burp, what do i look for next? is it a water pump issue? sensor, if i have one?
What I do on my wife's linking is parked the car and a little bit of a downhill angle. That way the air is forced to the top. Worked for me
i changed my own timing belt because of this guy, on a 2000 Nissan Xterra.
you were a big help Andy!
I literally just went thru the intro of this I'm thinking what did I do wrong my car is such a premadona this helped me feel not as dumb I gotta burp my brat of a car thanks you guys rock 😘
Loved your video. Spoke very clearly, very precise and descriptive. Anyone will be able to follow along.
You and Lenn are the best!
When I worked radiator repair (5 years) we would always drill a 1/8inch hole in the new thermostat in the flat disk section just outside the valve and inside the gasket area. This let traped air out of the engine block while engine was warming up, before thermostat opened. An old school way to do it, just don't drill a big hole in it, 1/8" is plenty.
Excellent suggestion John , makes a million dollars worth of common sence to me , wonder why this isn't a normal manufacturing process , seems that it would also help with the sudden shock of cold fluid entering the engine block , although thermostats are supposed to slowly open , but i have seen some that would basically ( PoP ) open at set temperature ??? But I'm old and car's are built with way too much Junk in them anymore , backup systems for main system's and bla bla , Hell I'm going to the store Not Pluto the Planet !!!
Thermostats always had bleed holes in them.
A1 videos = Top Notch
+80s DIRTBIKE Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
Fantastic!! I don't even know yet if this will fix my problem but I'm just so impressed with all the useful info and the presentation. Great job... and thank you!
Omg! I'll try this right away! And then I'll update my comment 😅.
I had my radiator repaired and after that the temperature rises at high speeds.
I'm using the vehicle without thermostat since then. I've tried to install the thermostat but the temperature issue returns. I'll try to purge the air out..
If it doesn't solve the problem I think there might be something clogged in the system. (Hot a/c is not working either)
This guy is definitely my favorite
Brian Young ! Are you really a Young man !?
I’m thankful this video appeared in my app. It’s what I needed to finish changing my thermostat. Very well produced.
Very informative video ! I had forgotten all about “burping” the system.
Wow. Far more information than I expected in this video. All of it valuable. Thank you!
Thank you, I'm going to try to burp the air out. I replaced the water pump and now it over heats. I think it's air. I never heard of this until watching this video, thank you.
I really appreciate that , how to balance the coolant level .
Great video .
Please keep up with more videos , they are my college courses .
Stay safe even if I am God ! Much love 🤩 .
Excellent job! I appreciate you showing many different ways to 'burp' a cooling system.
+Richard Penland Thanks for the feedback!
That cateye chevy looks pristine 🔥
I so wish I took auto mechanics in high school. At least I would be familiar. I’m such a noob with cars.
Replace thermostat radiator still with running hot looked at your video.. Respect
I've got a 2002 Buick LeSabre 3800 series engine the angle pipe that retains water that goes into the block cracked in the engine overheated traveling back home the engine got so hot it messed up and burnt the gaskets I found out that there was a product called Blue Devil I followed the procedures on this liquid called Blue Devil once I repair the broken angle pipe I poured in the Blue Devil as it was idling with no water in the radiator just the Blue Devil by itself this product is legit and it really works my car has been running excellent for the past 7 months doesn't overheat anymore
@classics718
If you are overheating, I dont believe you want to turn on the A/C; that will just make the engine work harder and does not help to còol the engine. You can turn on the heater to get the coolant circulating through the core to provide added cooling to the system. Running the A/C will only make your overheating problem worse.
This guy is funny & knowledgeable..
Thermostat replacement, radiator replacement still overheating after long drive. This has been annoyance. Thanks for the help.
Thank you ! I appreachate the tip reguarding the goes on top when reinstalling to help bleed out the remaining air. Very nice !
The whole goes on top
You know these inside out and explanation and instructions are Golden! Thank you!
Mechanic didn't burp mine. Just told me to drive it and check coolent reservoir for a couple of days. Well I'm on day 3 of adding coolent. Almost froze to death driving home at 3 am with no heat, now with a cold I'm adding more coolent. It will heat up in the daytime when not so cold out but at night in freezing cold no heat. I brought coolent with me tonight and added before I head out at 3 am.
After doing new radiator hoses on a old isuzu and a thermostat and therm by pass hose. I totally forgot about burping ! Was running hot !!! Spill free funnel and lots of air came out.
Another tric you can try is to turn the air-conditionig on and your radiator cooling fans should come on automatically and stay on to keep the car from overheating until you get the car home and to the mechanic
awesomely explained thank u!... but how much time should I be revving to avoid getting coolant to boil?
That smoke looked so artificial. Good job on the video. Thank you so much for teaching us.
+Khan Zada Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
It's steam, not smoke.
Very good explanation your well spoken clear easy to understand good visual always sho and tell the best on 1-10 it's a 15 thankyou I'm s73 worked on car since I was 10 you showed things that I knew also showed things I ve seen like the vacuum but never seen used prior people like are very knowledgable helpful and a good citizen keep up good work thank you
I usually keep the radiator cap open and put a funnel on the hole and top up some coolant then let the engine run until the thermostat opens up and i can see the air bubbles comes out and the coolant goes in. Top up until the engine stops consuming the coolant and air bubbles stops coming out before i turn off the engine and put the radiator cap back on.
I absolutely love the vacuum way it makes it a breeze!
Thanks for the tips. You're video was helpful when I replaced my friends thermostat that I purchased from 1A Auto!
Awesome video, so educational and thorough. One of my favorite channels :)
Great video. Is excess air in the system bad for the car?
Thank you, just refilled coolant on a empty 07 avalaon and it kept boiling all thr coolant and spitting it out. Fkund the bleeder screw hidden in back with no space. Going to buy the burp kit u showed, hopefully it works
Yup. Just found out the mid way. I wasnt aware i had to open the cap to also to properly burp it. But we good now.
It’s Just Crazy I Know By Difficult U Was Talking About The 1500’s System Yess Getting The Air Out Of Them Without That Vacuum Is Like WW2. Thank You.
As a Subaru owner I can tell you that it is not always okay for your coolant system to be bubbling. If it's just air it's probably okay, but if it smells like exhaust you have a problem LOL
Man I'm glad I found this video . I thought my new water pump wasn't working or something worse.
Thank you for a straightforward answer very helpful
I suggest turning the heater later to help the engine reach its operating temp faster rather than having the heater on.
Great video! I’m kinda car stupid and you made this very easy to understand!
Thank You Bro I like how you Always Explain things and show your how too especially diagnostics most common problems with vehicle and how to replace part step by step like Chrisfix!
I use that funnel every time and it goes perfectly.
I have a 2014 Chevy Cruze and my coolant boils in the expansion tank, I am still getting hot air in the cab. I just replaced the water pump with a timing belt change and I also replaced the thermostat as well. If you have any thought let me know.
I wish you could work on my 2006 chevy equinox. I had someone take out air of the coolant line to fix the overheating problem, but it is still overheating. What could be the problem? This car has been such a headache.
Could I have caused the leaking out of coolant by not bleeding air after filling up coolant to near empty reservoir?
Ok my car gurus, I have a 2006 Colorado 2.8L I have changed temp sensor, water pump, thermostat and coolant, I blurp out all the air, my issue is when at idle temp rises to half mark, when adding throttle the gauge noticable goes down to cold mark, this is with heat off, with heat on and it does make heat, at idle it gets to quarter mark no higher, rev it and it goes down to cold mark again, I'm at a loss and confused as to what is going on, I have never had a vehicle like this, could I possibly have a faulty new thermostat
So Toyota messed up my radiator and they offered to replace it. I have a Corolla with 150,000 miles. My question is, do I have to replace the water pump & thermostat when replacing the radiator?
VERY thorough and informative. Wish I could bring my vehicle to you.
I recently replaced the cooling fan temperature switch, and thus needed to add more coolant and burp the cooling system. I left the engine running for over 40min but the lower radiator hose remained cold, while the top hose is hot, and the cooling fan never came on. For over 30min air bubbles still came out but less towards the end; I had to keep filling the radiator with coolant during that entire span but in fewer amounts until no more air bubbles and the coolant level stop dropping. Is it normal for the lower hose to remain cold over that duration?
Mine was pissing out Coolant bought the truck for 900 bucks a couple days ago and it’s been leaking transmission fluid oil and coolant can you help me out in this
Great Video, Thank you for the time and effort, that 'Burping tool' looks good, where can i get that from? please post more good content too, 🙂
If i replace the reservoir because the sensor is bad ( because my 5.3 fills from the res ) do i have to purge the air out of it then? Thanks
I just drained my 21 Acura ILX, with the spill free funnel. Refilled coolant, put the cap back on, after burping, and now I’m getting hot air only on Hi setting? If I go to say, 86, 85, ect…. The air goes to room temperature. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks
I just replaced the thermostat and I didn’t even think of this. It overheated again while driving up and down the street. That’s what brought me here. I’m about to do this and see what happens
I have a 2012 Ford Taurus 3.5l and I just changed the fluid to put all clean antifreeze in it, and I have used everything shown here, still has air in there somewhere. I did a pressure test to see if it has a hole anywhere in the system and it held 25lbs of vacuum for 30 minutes so no leaks in the system and I did a compression test and it’s still fine so I don’t like the fan staying on at almost full blast and I know it’s not the fan or anything to do with it I have all new and I tested it in my wife’s Taurus and it did it’s job perfectly. Am I going to have to continually open the pressurized overflow cap to release air from the overflow until it’s out?
This is such a great video. I just replaced my thermostat and changed the coolant.
I was wondering why my 2012 navigator was only running at 184 degrees. Installed an OEM part.
Any ideas? Thanks
I have 2012 Nissan Altima which has two thermostat in it. Since I live in a hot region where temperature is usually around 48 degrees celcius during summer so should we remove a single thermostat if not both of them?
There are 2 more issues with over heating. One I saw back in the 70's. A mercury cougar had a water port in the head that was not machined in. A related issue is trash plugging water ports in the head.
I bought thermostat for but my mobile mechanic said this thermostat don’t have a seal so he asked me go get thermostat housing … after he replace n let the engine running for 5m the needle go up high.. he turn engine off let it cool… after that the engine won’t start at all… can you guess what cause the problems? Should I follow your video step n try it but since I can’t get the car start anymore…;(
This is very smart , cut to the chase ! Great job
Have replaced water pump, thermostat and radiator. Still trying to run hot.
Can a radiator leak affect the air conditioning?
That spider tho at the 2:35 mark !!!
Do you have to drain all the coolant out before pulling a vacuum or just the reservoir ?
So I am assuming when you have that big funnel on the radiator to burp the system, once the air is out of the system, the bubbling fully stops right?
The "air lift system" is Josh's "Adept Ape" on UA-cam favorite and only way to flush heavy duty diesel engines. He is a Caterpillar mechanic at a Caterpillar dealership.
