Had a Mercedes 240D 1975 automatic. It could be started by towing and it was stated in the manual that it could be towed perfectly. This is because the gearbox oil pump was on the cardan shaft and spun as soon as the car moved. Pumped around the oil in the gearbox and in the oil cooler.
Mercedes clearly didn't expect the starter to be replaced on a regular basis! What a cool car. The silver and blue makes it even nicer than the green one.
It could be that the contacts in the flaky solenoid were just worn out, the intermittent clicking & non-starting usually mean the contacts are basically just copper dust lining the inside of the shell, with only just enough remaining that it'd barely work... :)

Volvo/VW D24T starter is a great upgrade for W123 diesels, they have gear reduction so much stronger to crank and almost bolt on
