Best thing about your videos is that for 55 minutes there is NO MUSIC. I fucking hate that every car renovation channel adds horrible music for every timelapse. Really love your content man
@@vayduong6806 - Overpriced Euro-Garbage. I've been spoiled by Small Block Ford and Small Block Chevy V8s. Chevy or 5.0 Ford Knock = $600 bucks (IF it ever knocks). Maserati knock = $20 Grand.
Here, in Europ, American cars are seen as garbage... No taste whatsoever, crappy plastic interiors and overall mediocre design, unreliable thirsty engines, even worse gearboxes and the list goes on... So what that they are easy to service when they are garbage 😂
After spending 50+ years as a mechanic, I would suggest to you that the oil pressure releif valve was sticking. It would first stick closed and so as the revs rise the pressure would go up and up and up and then at high pressure (that means high revs) would be blown off it`s seat and stick open, meaning no pressure at all, at 6000+ revs the engine would pop in seconds, when the revs fall again then it would seat again, but by now the damage is done. The pressure releif valve is only a spring loaded torpedo shaped plug that should be free to move and is kept closed by the spring pressure alone and is pushed off it`s seat due to oil pressure alone. It is there to prevent over pressure of the oil which could damage the oil pump. Paul from Widnes
Yes, I think you are correct. Porsche 944 and 951 engines had similar problems with a sticking OPRV. Rebuilding that engine required replacing the OPRV by default. In fact, that engine has two OPRV's, one on the block, and one in the head. I replaced both in my 951 engine at a cost of $500.00 per OPRV when I rebuilt the engine.
So... in conclusion: very unlucky how everything with this car went. But the pure fact, that there are a ton of parts on this car not longer available WHILE STILL BEING PRODUCED, says a lot about Maserati. In my opinion. Besides that, it was much fun to see you working on it, so thank you Sreten! 😊
@@carlosoruna7174 Totally enjoyed how Sreten worked on this engine. I is so well in explaining what he does and why he does it. I mean we all love the sound of that engine and it looks totally amazing too. I would love to hear how a car like this can be made better serviceable.
Hello from Dronfield Derbyshire in the united kingdom. I love watching all your videos it doesn’t matter to me what car you are working on I just love watching you so don’t pull yourself down. As we say in England SHIT HAPPENS. I hope you can get a replacement engine soon and at least make some money from the stupid car. My 28 year old son died at Christmas of a heart attack and my mum is in hospital with pneumonia and to watch these kinds of videos helps me a lot with taking my mind off the bad things that have happened in my life recently and being disabled and suffering from severe mental health issues your channel keeps me going so I look forward to the next chapter no matter what it may be. Keep up the good work and I send my love to you and your wife. All the best Richard.
I'm very sorry to hear what you are going through. It means a lot to hear my silly videos are helping you. Life ain't easy, but please stay strong! All the best to you and your family!
Hey Richard, thank you for this comment. It puts things in to perspective, I’ve been through the mill myself of late. Keep in there and I’m glad I’m not alone in finding Sreten’s videos therapeutic. In fact I’ve started referring to some of Sreten’s expressions as ‘Sretenisms’. Things like carbon fibre towel and fogging oil for men. 😂 Thank you Sreten, you’re keeping a lot of us sane with your great videos. 😊
I am absolutely amazed at how you remove every hose, cable housing, connectors, o-rings, and harnesses, and don't forget about it when installing everything back on. If it was me, I am 1000% I will forget or incorrectly install something.
It certainly helps that he is not planning on putting it back together. He is simply taking it apart to diagnose the failure and document it for YT. He says several times that the engine is garbage now despite it being rebuildable; getting parts is the price prohibitive.
Audi guy here, i feel like a lot of people aren’t only here for Bmw content but more because it feels nice to see someone who actually knows what he’s doing and get’s shit done. Definitely enjoyed the QP but won’t miss it if it doesn’t come back😂
Im a car guy but more importantly enjoy watching someone who takes pride in their work and who works with care not to mention the jokes are good too. Everything I learn is all a plus.
I think that Audi content would bring more people to the channel. Seeing comparisons between BMW and Audi, which is build better, smarter. All the parts sharing in VAG Cheaper model alternatives. At least in Latvia there's a big rivalry between both
I'm a VAG guy. I watch your videos because they are so well-produced and edited, and I love seeing content about maintenance and restoration. I really liked that you brought another brand to the channel. Don't get discouraged with this Maserati; I'd love to see other brands on the channel like Porsche, Audi, VW, Bentley, and Mercedes. That would be great!
Some beer money to cheer you up! These episode was 56 minutes of very familiar feelings of getting the joy of fixing something, just so it can break again immidiattely.
I'm a BMW guy, so I found your channel over a year ago whilst browsing UA-cam for BMW specific content. My interest was piqued from the in-depth restorations, very quickly becoming some of my favorite content because you are one of, if not the best mechanic I've ever seen. And over the last year, I've also highly enjoyed your content because you're a blast to watch. You're funny, energetic, and possess an intelligence and tenacity to work on and diagnose cars that is extremely rare. You're brilliant, simple as that. But one thing I am not is a Maserati/Italian car guy; I honestly do not really care for this car at all. It sounds nice and I like exotic V8s, but I've never liked anything Stellantis, for good reason. No, honestly the only reason I've watched these videos on the Maserati is because I love your content, your personality, and wish to support you. If it was any one else working on this Maserati, I wouldn't have watched it. I don't know if it's worth continuing the car, for your sanity and wallet's sake, but I will continue to watch regardless if it's a BMW or not. Though I'd prefer to watch you work on a bimmer any day, I do hope this project works out for you, whichever way that might be. Keep up the great content.
Stellantis is FIAT, fix it again tony, but 20 times worse, because they're trust fund babies now. They buy brands and cheapen everything. Never touch a car from that brand parentage.
Dude even my wife, who’s not a gear head, loves your videos. You’re extremely didactic and just the part where you point all the specs and torques for the bolts and nuts, is a great source for us who work in our cars. Seeing the project Rottweil, caused my wife to look for a 530 here in Canada. BTW we have 3 X3 ( 1 E83 manual and 2 F25). Chin up and keep the great work Amigo❤❤❤
Most people arent crazy enough to do this. You dont need to hear it from me, but I'm impressed by your knowledge of parts and terminology, in what i assume is your second language.. it is better than a lot of american mechanics i know. hats off to you.
@@EudesRJ ye, that was a pretty BS build imho. Mat literally said he couldn't find a flooded car for parts and that's why he got a working one, then Tavarish comes in and buys a flooded car... They were just moving parts around and printing content. Mat could have easily just waited for the right parts car but... yeah...
I’m a mechatronics engineering student and to be very honest, I’ve learnt more about mechanical side of engineering from your channel than my own classes. Cheers ! Keep up the good videos
I did that degree. You don't really learn shit about mechanical stuff in the core classes, lol. Won't really need it much though if you end up going into the automation field.
If you drive a Tacome then you must be very unfamiliar with breakdowns. Especially like Italian cars. On the other end you're probably very familiar with rust. 😂
@@svenvanwesterloo173Thats about right. I own Mitsubishi Pajero(Shogun in other countrys) when it rains if you listen carefully you can hear them rusting away😂
HI Sreten, Usually i am not making any comments, but i feel like i must to. I am driving boring Honda and love watching ur videos, the dedication to perfection, video qualities and your sense of humor are truly inspiring. Showing also the bad parts of restoring cars is a big PLUS! Be sure we are watching u because of u, not just the cars. Keep up the fantastic work! and don’t let an Italian beauty get you down!
I just appreciate that Streten went out of his comfort zone and tackled a project that was destined to be infuriatingly difficult. And still managed to retain his grace & humour. Quality content dude, as always 💪
Hi Streten. Just finished reading all the comments, I knew you wouldn't let it beat you. I am 72 now, not in great health and first got into your channel for the E31 content. I have owned an 840Ci for 16 years and have been working on it as a project for the last 8. I also have a 1989 E34 535i, which I've had since 1996 and my daily drive is a 2003 E46 325Ci M Sport. So, yes, I'm a BMW guy, but I've watched your channel grow into the best car restoration channel on the platform. I guess some videos are going to do better than others, but don't worry yourself about making a wrong move over content choice. It was still a great set of videos, and I will be really interested to see the solution. It is your dedication to what you do that inspires me to carry on working on cars, and to hopefully get my E31 back on the road.
It is a running joke in our group when on weekend drives that we need Stig to follow in a Morris Marina to mop up the Italian car owners when we drive German or Japanese…….it is enjoyable content even if painful for you! Keep going and it makes the good moments even sweeter. Love your commentary and noises as you go - you are doing so much right! I have an e38 and just sold an e39…….
I was nanometers from subscribing on patreon when you started the Maserati series. But when I saw part 5 i knew i had to subscribe, to keep this series alive. I love learning a ton from your BMW content, and that just makes it even cooler to see you learning from the maserati adventures. If anyone can solve this and learn from it, its you! I really enjoyed the outtro as well, explaining your thoughts behind decisions for the outcome of the project. I hope you keep taking on special projects, maybe next time a Porsche will suit your love of german cars better and still be an exotic? 😁 Keep up the awesome work!
Sreten, I just want extend a bit of support and encouragement to you as you deal with this disaster of a project. I am sure the combination of mechanical issues, low viewership and revenue this project has dealt you feels like a heavy blow which none of your fans can truly understand. I will say that you have still managed to captivate many, including myself, as you fight against this beast of an engine, and we are by your side to cheer you on regardless of the direction you take it to a conclusion. Keep your chin up knowing we will support this and your future projects.
Your wide open oil pressure issue reminded me of my 454 I had in my 76 Camaro. I installed a bigger capacity oil pan and i didn't adjust the dipstick (rookie move) and i was running a High Volume Oil pump. Everything looked great on the gauges until i went Wide Open and the pressure just disappeared. Im pretty sure I sent all the oil in the heads and starved the bottom end, ended up with 6 spun rod bearings lol.
The oil pressure seemed a bit high to me, if anything, which would tend to send it all up to the heads, and the square sump shape allows the oil to slosh around quite a bit. Could literally have uncovered the pickup tube. The end of it is a single small hole - prone to vortexes and sucking in vapour instead - most have a flat trumpet pickup for that reason, to reduce the velocity of oil flowing in.
@@M539Restorations Get a Porsche Cayenne Turbo S with the 4.8 twin turbo V8. I believe that will be very interesting. I would also love to see a E65 760i with the N73 V12. That will be even more interesting.
I am an Audi enthusiast, however, I find your content extremely well produced and put together. I may be the exception to the rule but I think your audience is more broad than you think.
@@RaphaelAguirreAnd I'm a Mercedes and Volvo guy who absolutely loves Sreten's content as well. Y'all are absolutely right, his audience is way wider than he thinks
@@RaphaelAguirreis there an haudi channel similar to Sretens ? I was 🤏🏻 this close to buying a 4.2 s5 before buying my crashed m550i and was researching something of the sort but did not find much.
Some champion wrenching. You're a brilliant mechanic. I'm stunned at the cruddy quality of the engine. To think I lusted after these when they zoomed by. Not any more.
So sorry to hear this didn’t work out for you. One of the main things I admire about BMW is their parts support for older cars. One time I ordered an ac compressor bracket that allows you to mount an R134A compressor to a S14 block for my E30 M3. I waited almost a year for it but they made it and delivered it. Without parts support there is no point owning the car.
Appreciate all the content you have made for the N54! Not sure Sreten would approve of the N54 FBO madness, but learned so much working on that damn engine lol
I am a car guy but more importantly, I enjoy watching someone who takes pride in their work and who works with care not to mention the jokes are good too. Everything I learn is a plus. In short, doesn't matter what car you are working on, I'll still be here watching.
That's what I was thinking, too. Often times the lines/hoses/wire looms are routed a certain way on purpose, and it's not always obvious until you get to a certain point (or the engine back in the car) how that routing should be. And that "certain point" is often after you've already put a few of them on, only to realize that you need to disassemble and reroute them again to make room for the next one. Knowing where they all connect is one thing, but figuring out how they all snake together? Sheesh.
Sreten, the best part about your channel for me is that you go to such lengths with these cars that no one else would or even could (financially and mentally). Thanks to your videos I get to fulfill the little perfectionist inside me that screams "Repair your car fully, to perfection" which otherwise I couldn't (financially). Thank you for showing such interesting content and I hope you keep making more and more.
Stopping would not make any sense in my german opinion. I love Italian cars and I am so glad that you are willing to continue. Thank you so much for caring about your subscribers... and yourself!
in 52:52 you said the main reason was for this project to try and widen your audience , I believe you did widen and keep doing that day by day. I discovered your channel by Quattroporte PT1 video (I wanted to know more about that engine). After that video, I watched almost all of your projects in a few days like I found a treasure. As someone who grew up in an engine mechanic shop and a mechanical engineer in Automotive Industry, I must say your contents' quality is top notch and the quality of the craftmanship, the effort you put in detail is immaculate. Keep doing what you feel Sreten, Greetings.
I love this guy...such commitment...and maturity...so impressive to see him attack difficult projects...his parents raised him well. He will always be successful. That engine embodies a kafka-esque experience...what a disaster!!
I like all your Maserati episodes. It is a beautiful car, design-wise at least. That engine is a mess, all those wires, cables, pipes and hoses wrapped around it ... just crazy. People with mental issues designed this engine. I hope you solve the problem, wish you all the best.
Hi Sreten, extremely huge fan and patron here. I try to spread your name whenever I can as you are my favorite UA-camr by FAR. I was once stuck in a meeting room with my coworkers for an entire day as we were waiting for confirmation from a customer. There was a TV in the room so I streamed my laptop to it with your videos, just to show how amazing your content is. Everyone in the room (8 people) were enthralled and we binged your content for 5-6 hours straight. Just keep doing what you are doing and your channel will grow beyond your wildest dreams.
Joe Walsh made a song about this. "Life's Been Good" Excerpt from the lyrics: "My Maserati does one-eighty-five It lost a bearing, now it don't drive" 🤪
It's the second time I watch this episode, all the suffering you went through is kinda soothing, reminds me of my own sufferings and struggles I go through as well.
I was a big Citroen guy, especially hydraulic ones (Xantias, one C6). Owned some Peugeots as well. Since the day I discovered your channel four years ago, I was blowned by your ability of finding parts for your cars. I really was alien to me, being used to NLA, tricky part references, lack of repair manuals, etc. Now I own a W209 benz and an e46 BMW and I'm living a daydream. The availability of OEM parts is unbelievable compairing to Citroen, and I live in France ! Nicely done manufacturer softwares too for these two brands. Stellantis is just a big sinking boat that is bringing down some very nice old brands with him.
Nothing beats parts availability like vag group. From kicking a rock somewhere and theres parts under it, to detailed parts catalogs for pretty much all the cars ever made and a massive walkthrough type software support. Not even mercedes or bmw get near. Maybe Porsche but thats a different championship.
Same thing for me after owned three Alfa Rome's. Manufacturing information software is hard to get hold of (like this Misserati). The reason i switched to BMW is the widely availability of technical data. This really supports the fanbase of this brand, not only for the looks. However access to ETK was possible through the bmw portal a few years ago but they discontinued this feature. Fortunately ETK information is still widely available on the internet. Hopefully BMW understands that it (future) sales has some relation to the fanbase and maintains it's 'opensource' technical data availability.
@@mudemmeonickBroski vag is already discontinuing some parts for golf 5, specific ones to rarer models but still... Golf 3 has loads of stuff NLA. BMW still has EVERYTHING, like every single part available for e36, 85% for e30. BMW is king of parts availability. Vag aint bad but not even close.
Sreten, i love and admire your openness about the situation. Something you do not see too often on UA-cam. Real content, made by real people! I love it.
Me and my 13 year old son have loved watching the e92 m3 and also this Maserati. I've watched your channel almost from the beginning, it's amazing to see how it's grown. You aren't trying to be like another channel or create drama and nonsense. For those of us that like things done properly it's just a joy and inspiration to watch. I wasn't a fan of this car coming to the channel but it's grown on me, not in the way that I'd ever ever want to own one but just to see how 'different' the engineering is to BMW 😄Thanks Sreten and wish you all the best.
Bad luck my friend, I don't think you did anything wrong. You went further than most people, I would say that river is looking really good right about now. Gentle, calm, and thirsty for Maseratis. In terms of video performance, I think it's just that people expect Stellantis/Maserati engines to explode. I remember when the trio were testing Lancias, it was said the Gamma would explode on Wednesdays. Or if you used the brakes. Or if you sneezed. Next time - We have a Lexus LFA with a blown-up engine (it's possible, they are high performance engines). I'm sure that would do really well in terms of views, due to it being such an anomaly. Plus it's apparently one of the best designed suspensions ever.
Stret don’t give up mate! I can’t speak for everyone but your content is as much about you as your cars! Your content is what I look forward to most weeks! Please please keep the faith my friend!
Watching the disassembly, minute by minute, (yes, I watched it all!) screw by screw, hose by hose, I kept thinking, how the hell is he going to know where they all go back!!! God bless your patience. Follow you for your love of Beemers, but got a real thrill when my favourite of all time showed up, a Masser. I would never own one, this vid shows why, but love knows no logic. Always entertaining, thanks
You mentioned that connecting rods are cast, not forged. 44:00 only sides of rod bearings are worn, not whole surfice, so while rods are made from weak metal, mayybe the rod on that cilinder is ever so slightly bent, wich could cause this type of wear. I saw that on 2 journals, and third spun. If my memory serves me right, increased gap between crank journal and bearing can cause oil pressure issues, but in video we saw that pressure was good... Probably I'm wrong, but thats my theory
It is a pity that the series has not had the expected views, but I have to say that each of the videos you upload is a relaxing moment and it is one of the few channels that nowadays you can enjoy watching videos of 40-50 minutes, thanks for generating this wonderful content.
Cool video watching you from New Zealand The last engine I took apart was my 1972 Hillman avenger ha I was 17 now 63 The plumbing alone on this engine is scary cool to watch Thanks
Sreten, you are truly one of a kind human being. Nobody would endure this (Maserati, Alpina etc). Please, keep up the great work, you are a youtube treasure.
Thank you for your tenacity and just sticking with this project to the point of personal agony. It's actually truly inspiring! And the way that this Maserati makes BMW's look absolutely user-friendly is a bonus.
This channel just keeps on being awesome. The ease with which you work on this is incredible. A true old school mechanic who adjusted to new types of cars, the best kind of mechanic and one of the last of the mohicans. Almost as incredible as the abhorent quality of the Maserati. No matter which channel I look at which is rebuilding something from Ferrari or Maserati, the build quality never even closely matches the proce tag. Even if I could afford it I would never ever buy one.
Entertaining but exhausting to watch this highly talented master at work. Bloody hell, putting something as complex as this back together would be miraculous.
I can't.. I just can't.. this whole episode was like watching the heart of a glorious Master Mechanic slowly degrading into oblivion. :( I can appreciate the beauty and power of the engine, but you've also highlighted the incredibly obvious corner-cutting and cheap parts involved, total ignorance to planned maintenance and a complete disregard for mechanics that the designers showed when designing the engine. It was lazy, showed involvement from "board members" and a very finite lifetime. You, sir, are an absolute pleasure to watch.
I love your videos. You remind me of a wonderful mechanic I had in Ohio, (who happened to be German). At the time we had a nightmare Mercedes. The dealership couldn't find the issue. I kept asking if it could have something to do with a spark plug because it was missing on a cylinder. They were so condescending to me like "don't worry little lady, let US figure out that kind of mechanical stuff blah blah blah. They had the engine out, everything. It just got worse. I finally took it to a guy whose garage had me intrigued for a while. He only did German cars and he was German. He always had some really nice cars there and I thought there is no way he could be as bad as the Mercedes service department. I spoke to him, he told me to bring it in the next morning and he figured it out as I waited. During a service one of the wires connecting the spark plugs had torn. And he always explained everything. He was wonderful. Guys like you are soooooo appreciated.
What amazed me most was the disassembly of the Quattroporte drive train, resulting in loads of screws, clamps and hoses carried off screen, only to reassemble them later, I couldnt see how you kept these sorted and organized. I was trying to imagine the hell of how to find the exact clamp and pin and gave up on the idea. Well done :)
Very interesting content. I did like this car project and fact that the original “long interval” oil changes you saw in the car history… seems to be a suspect contributor in this bearing failure. HOWEVER, what I really enjoy is your calm nature when tackling hard projects… that’s awesome. Yes, I have a BMW, but this difficult project was great. What we learn is good maintenance helps cars last much longer… yet some small piece failure could be the straw that breaks the camels back.
Sreten Dude - You have inspired me to pursue an E38 and REPLICATE what you did with Project Dubai. I am an aircraft builder and also currently building a cockpit simulator (simpit) for the mancave. Building things, taking them apart, putting them back together is joyful for me. I am also a Porsche guy so a 928, or an early Panamera would be a sick project and I can only guess that Porsche people would augment your channel more than Maserati folks. There are a LOT of Porsche enthusiasts (nuts) out there. But the candid reason I watch your stuff is you, and your ability to communicate and simplify what sometimes seems complex. You inspire confidence that many can do what you are doing and love and that is a gift. Keep pushing and THANK YOU for publishing your channel.
E38 - Excellent choice! All downhill after that! (I have 750 & 740) ((The 728 is worth a look too. With suitable resonators on the exhaust, they sound lovely.))
How about a late 2000’s Audi S6 with the Lambo V10? They are amazing but the engine has to come out for everything… a perfect car for this channel. I so miss my 2008 S6.
I hope he can find a 2008 RS6, I also wrote a comment and I hope he seriously considers this car. It looks good, sounds good and honestly probably more reliable than the pos Maserati Engine
What a bummer! It’s too much of a coincidence that the bearings went and the oil pump shaft was starting to round off. I’ve long been a Maserati fan, having owned 6 of them and secretly was considering the latest QP’s because they are very special drive. But no more desire - definitely. Another Patreon here suggested working on an LS 430, which has many fans, including me who is on his second one, current one owned for the last 12 years with no issues after 110,000 miles - daily driver, still looks and drives like new. Ramble over. Looking forward to seeing this broken Maserati back on the road. Whatever you work on, I still love your work and your channel - my favourite on YT by a mile… BTW, taking delivery of my new Lexus this week - ES300h Takumi - and keeping my LS 😊
I liked the Quadrobroken videos. It's a shame that they weren't so well received by the rest of the community. But please don't let it get you down - I'd like to see more “non-BMW” content. I only discovered your channel 3-4 months ago and have since binged all your videos.
Can't watch this now, but man, am i excited ! Has to be frustrating. Very interesting series of videos though. I was watching another car restoration channel, and in comparison you realize how interesting, well filmed, and well put together M539 is. The others just don't compare.
I love the honesty in the last 5 minutes of the video and I really wish I had an engine for you 😢 Keep up the amazing content, I enjoy each and every second of it!
I have been a mechanic at Stellantis for 18 years and they only make junk. especially like the 1.2 puretech.... Anyway. I have been watching your channel almost since the beginning and it is nice to see how perfectionist you are. I have one myself e31 850i/6 e30 327i e46 m3/ e46 330d e34 540i/6 e34 535i e87 130i ... Old BMWs are logical to work on, and drive fantastic. i love your work man!
Yea that logic didn't really extend to the E90 generation, at least not with xDrive. They put shit gaskets on the oil pan, but with xDrive, you have basically disassemble the whole front end to replace said gasket.
I envision that there is a group of engineers huddled around a monitor in a cube in Munich laughing and saying to each other "Zat is some hilarious schtuff, should haf sticked with BMW" Jokes aside, the anxiety I felt for you when you looked at that rat's nest of connectors, vacuum lines and hoses to remove to hook up the engine lift... uggh... I found myself questioning if that's an inevitability of getting old. I don't tinker with cars anymore, but there was a time 20+ years ago when I was a teenager living with my parents trying to swap out a busted transmission in their driveway, something like that would be an awesome challenge, now I couldn't be bothered. Anyway, this has still been interesting Sreten, thank you for putting in the time and effort to document this journey. PS: Legitimately laughed out loud at the "Guess who the schmuck is"
Super tough luck in this one - but once again your dedication to come through and not be defeated by "Stellantis nonsense (had to reall laugh at this one) is ourstanding 👍👍 One thing I keep coming back to in my mind: how clean this engine is. At 300k km with oil changes only every 20 - 25k, it should not be looking this clean. But then again, you said most of the fasteners looked like they were never off, so there is that... Anyway, love all your content - BMW or otherwise - keep r good stuff coming (but alao look to yourself and your family!!)
I agree, it's ridiculously clean on the inside inside. But remember the engine from project Frankfurt, 145k miles, and it was stupidly clean inside too, and it still failed. It's possible if it's mainly long distance journey's where the oil gets hot enough to burn off condensation, as that creates varnish, among other things. The bolts on the engine do look untouched, but it is possible the whole engine was swapped at some point. No real way to tell.
@@M539Restorations my personal opinion about the failure in Project Frankfurt is that the timing chain system had so much tension on it that it pulled the crankshaft upwards and wore out the Number One upper main bearing; and that where the crankshaft broke is a natural weak spot. (And that specialist BMW shop in Australia pretty much pointed out the same thing)
Aside from the car blowing up! It genuinely baffles me that you do not have more subs and views. There are a lot of good car channels out there but I don’t think any of them is as in-depth, interesting, knowledgeable or as humble as you are Streten. I’ve been around since lock down and I genuinely drop everything I am doing to watch the videos! When they are shorter I’m genuinely devastated.
Spread the name my dude. Forums, pages, everywhere you can. That's how these things work. YT won't do it, they're only in it for what brings them money.
Hi Streten, long time fan of the channel here - just a note to say whatever car you are working on it is a joy to watch, so please pick the cars that interest you and also that you feel you could make some money on! The most important thing is that you enjoy the projects, if you do, we will also!
I hope this Maserati series doesn't end, I really enjoyed seeing a Quattro(broken)porte in this channel and I learned new things about this car and I become even more passionate about it. If you gonna sell it or give up I can understand that and appreciate the content that you done with this car so far, also the courage to buy one of this to try to gain a different audience
You are up there with the very very few that tinkled a Maserati by themselff and survived without going nuts. You earned the Top-Gold-status for that achievement alone!!!
I was waiting for this 🎉. Man I feel bad for you… Such a terrible design and experience overall with parts… Patreon army won’t let you down! We are here for you always! I’m waiting for your solution to this problem🙏🏻. Very excited for B10, E39 M5, E31 start up 🤌🏻🤌🏻🤌🏻 can’t wait! 🤩
I have an Audi and the thing I liked the most about your channel is how methodic you are and how you go deep into the process of restoring the car. Especially the engines. And since it is a BMW, is more related to "common people. I would love to see more content of loved cars that people hold close to their hearts than exotic expensive cars. I talk for myself when I say that I would be obsessed with any video you do about and Audi TT for example, since it's the car I own and I do have a lot of emotional attachment to it. Just saying that because I do think that the formula of your channel is more your methodology plus cars that are loved by many, over luxury silly cars that we see only on UA-cam or in fancy events.
Working for a company that does mainly import, we get quite a lot of Maseratis in our shop and every single time i stand amazed at why people buy these cars. Not a single one i've ever seen has been without issues. It's also where my personal belief that most Italian cars are designed and engineered exclusively by people who have had at least 5 glasses of wine comes from. (Somewhat like French cars :P). I personally drive a Peugeot, which i admit is deeply flawed, but in a quirky sense, mechanically it's been nothing short of utterly reliable, while on Maseratis i've only ever been able to say they look good. Long story short: I admire you for your patience, i'd have set it on fire at the very least. Keep up the great content, much love from the Netherlands : )
Jeremy Clarkson said it himself: Owning a Maserati is like having a 2-year old kid, it is very annoying most of the time, but if someone ever tried taking it away from you, you'd kill them!
@@DioTheGreatOne This is actually a much better way of phrasing it, albeit with the addition that when the kid does vomit over the floor and you have to clean it up. You're also not having fun :P
@@stephenscholes4758 We currently have no domestic brands, no, you have a point there. But as this is a BMW channel, have you ever heard of Adrian van Hooydonk?
Italian BMW lover follower here. By the time I'm writing, Stellantis is going to announce the selling of Maserati probably within a few days from now. Chinese buyer? Back to Ferrari? Don't know. But this can explain the complete lack of interest in producing spare parts. Very sorry for your unfortunate buy because the car itself still looks gorgeous. Maybe it would still be an honorable exit selling it without the engine. Anyway... keep up your incredible work. On BMW or on other brands.
I think this is a golden opportunity for a company like Honda - who make excellent race engines, but have a mediocre luxury division, stuck in FWD hell. Can you imagine? Honda R&D + engineering with Maserati design? Oh man...
Gotta say I truly enjoyed this series so far. And you did great public service providing info about parts quality and amount of labor. Instead of saying "Maserati are trash" you showed us why it is trash. Having said that and applauding the effort, I never truly understood the brand choice to widen away from Beamers, when Volvo is there for the taking. They have some funny V5/6/8 engines, a few sleepers and a big community behind them. Same goes for Porsche, and it'd be fun to see you wrestling with a boxer engine that doesn't fit the space it's been given to breath. Anywho, great episode.
The 'I do cars' episode of M539 :-( Sreten, people aren't that into the Maserati episodes because they can sense that you aren't. Or at least not nearly as much as you are into BMWs. Your spirit and enthusiasm is the main draw of the channel. If I can make a suggestion for branching out: do a BMW motorcycle. That's how the brand got started after all, and that way you keep it in the family :-) Some beautiful inline-6 engines to work on there!
No, people aren't into Maseratis because of this. No support from the brand, no available manual, nothing. If you check the comments on previous videos, those of us who tuned it were absolutely loving it
What a roller coaster this Quatrobroken has been! The slow start with getting to know it, then the anticipation while rebuilding, then the successful first start, only to blow up on the Autobahn. The oil pressure warning, while having good pressure, is so mysterious, I would try to look into this further. I understand that the manuals are crap and not much info on forums compared to BMW. But if there was a low oil warning, then it had to be registered somehow. If the oil pressure sensor showed good pressure, then there must be some other input to have it come up. That being said, I have no idea how one would go about diagnosing and finding the root cause for this issue. As You said - it makes sense to go with a used engine. The only issue is that the chances of getting a broken one are almost 100%. Used parts sellers are such scammers. Thanks for the videos and hope you don't loose too much money on this one!
Let me first say, despite it only lasting 5 minutes, it's a beautiful and lovely car. As to removing the engine, you make it look sooooo easy. I know its not, its very very difficult. Still I ❤️ love this car, I can see why you bought it, and have not pushed it into the canal. It is just lovely. I am so happy you are one doing this I lost my way seversl parts ago. You have to be complimented on your knowledge and lack of fear, concerning this engine and stripping it down.
Loved this project Sreten, exhausted just watching you work! 🙂 ..but we all learnt so much, looking forward to future episodes, whenever that might be..
Thank you for making up my mind about never owning Maserat.. So sorry it happend to you, and that it's impossible to mantain those beatiful cars on the roads like BMWs makes it. Such a waste, it pains me to see you really lose it over this car. But what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. As for audience - I think most BMW guys kinda crossovers with love for Italian cars, and Maserati/Ferraris aren't really popular among many people as not many can afford them. Do what you love, I would rather see you happy wreching stuff around your E39/E46 than struggle on something like this! God be with you Sreten!
That engine reminds me of my first Ducati. Beautiful with the bodywork on, looked like a f*cking tractor underneath and the wires and hoses looked like they were added by different teams, after the previous team forgot something. A complete mess. I feel your pain.
Wow what a frustrating process. It's easy to see how quickly they engineered this car. I totally support ditching this project. Are there any insurance auction cars you could salvage an engine from?
For me it doesn't matter which brand of cars you bring in to the hospital, it could as well be an old Lada, I will always watch every single episode and piece of content you upload, and also, I will always bring more people to your channel who would love this type of content.
Hi man, i just wanna say sorry in the name of everyone who maybe didn’t watched the Masserati content, i personally watched every episode because although i love bmw’s, i would watch your videos no matter what car you’re working on but you need to know that maybe the lack of views it’s caused just by the car, not yourself or the content (both of those are top level like always :)) ) sorry again for kinda causing you money loss and please, continue the stuff just like that.
Makes sense.
Can image this also causing the damage to the square shaft.
Wow..if that's it...bummer...a real.bummer
Yes, I think you are correct. Porsche 944 and 951 engines had similar problems with a sticking OPRV. Rebuilding that engine required replacing the OPRV by default. In fact, that engine has two OPRV's, one on the block, and one in the head. I replaced both in my 951 engine at a cost of $500.00 per OPRV when I rebuilt the engine.
I concur. Also, please flush out the turbo housings and the capillary tubes that supply the oil.

@@orlindimitrov7322this
great comment. I'll keep this in mind, even if I may never encounter this. you never know
The oil pressure seemed a bit high to me, if anything, which would tend to send it all up to the heads, and the square sump shape allows the oil to slosh around quite a bit. Could literally have uncovered the pickup tube. The end of it is a single small hole - prone to vortexes and sucking in vapour instead - most have a flat trumpet pickup for that reason, to reduce the velocity of oil flowing in.

Jesus. Replacing those tubes is going to be like recreating a plate of spaghetti after you've eaten it.
Sheesh.

That was f hilarious
@@pauloconci4196is shmuck! 😂😂😂
I would buy some rod and main bearings buy 1 rod, polish the crank with a shoelace and call it a day 😂😂
Bad luck my friend, I don't think you did anything wrong.
LFA would be astronomicaly priced even with a blown engine.
@mantaspaulius5426 yes, that's totally possible. Rods would have to be removed and precisely measured and checked for straightness.
It is a pity that the series has not had the expected views, but I have to say that each of the videos you upload is a relaxing moment and it is one of the few channels that nowadays you can enjoy watching videos of 40-50 minutes, thanks for generating this wonderful content.
Check the oil spray nozzles.. Been there done that when 1 failed and let all trough. It does not necessarily been seen in oil pressure at all times..
Good theory
Cool video watching you from New Zealand
The last engine I took apart was my 1972 Hillman avenger ha

The plumbing alone on this engine is scary cool to watch
Thanks
300.000km on this engine...some BMW V10 can only dream of this
I love your videos.
It’s LS time!
Sreten, you have reached Legend status! Don’t ever be discouraged! We love you!
I watched the whole thing because of your passion. Thanks
Yes, we are spoiled here 😊
It worked a little - this is my first video of yours and I enjoyed it!!

Old BMWs are logical to work on, and drive fantastic.
i love your work man!
Nice collection!
Yea that logic didn't really extend to the E90 generation, at least not with xDrive. They put shit gaskets on the oil pan, but with xDrive, you have basically disassemble the whole front end to replace said gasket.
Stellantis exists since a couple of years ago and you have been a Stellantis mech for 18 years?
I envision that there is a group of engineers huddled around a monitor in a cube in Munich laughing and saying to each other "Zat is some hilarious schtuff, should haf sticked with BMW"
Jokes aside, the anxiety I felt for you when you looked at that rat's nest of connectors, vacuum lines and hoses to remove to hook up the engine lift...
PS: Legitimately laughed out loud at the "Guess who the schmuck is"
Bold move .... Geezzzz that engine is huge. Like a rocket engine from Space X Star Ship. Love your editing.
Super tough luck in this one - but once again your dedication to come through and not be defeated by "Stellantis nonsense (had to reall laugh at this one) is ourstanding 👍👍
One thing I keep coming back to in my mind: how clean this engine is.
@@digitalrailroader I know, that was well explained in the video :)
You did more than any tech can on that car. Look forward to any and all content. In the end it’s not the cars, it’s the one working on them!
Keep up the great content, much love from the Netherlands : )
nah french cars are designed by someone who got "accidentally" thrown head first 15 times against a wall when he was born.
Jeremy Clarkson said it himself: Owning a Maserati is like having a 2-year old kid, it is very annoying most of the time, but if someone ever tried taking it away from you, you'd kill them!
Maybe we can muse on the Dutch and their contribution to car design....

Yet the poorly maintained engine did 300K.....
Bro, massive kudos to your resilience and tenacity
The 'I do cars' episode of M539 :-(
Sreten, people aren't that into the Maserati episodes because they can sense that you aren't.

If you check the comments on previous videos, those of us who tuned it were absolutely loving it
I love Eric! I have learned so much watching his videos. And he is funny as heck.
Being italian, i love this series. But man what a pain of a car to work on
Greetings from Italy Sreten!
300.000 km !
That engine reminds me of my first Ducati. Beautiful with the bodywork on, looked like a f*cking tractor underneath and the wires and hoses looked like they were added by different teams, after the previous team forgot something. A complete mess. I feel your pain.
I admire your perseverance. I hate working on such spaghetti...Nice video with no time wasted. Best of luck
99%of people would sell it after this , but you are that 1% that keep pushing to the end ! ❤
Much love
This is why you’re one of my favorite channels on UA-cam is because you show us everything the ups and the downs I remember the BMW Alpena series when that engine failed and you just kept moving forward and finished the project!!! You’re a beast, my friend!!! Support from the USA!!! 💯🫡
