Pretty crazy how the vacuum tubes were all, over the place! But that seems like it’s pretty smooth now. What a lovely car.

On your climate control. The only vacuum the system gets is for the air conditioning recirculation flap with a green tube with a yellow line on it. Given that you don't have air conditioning, there should be no vacuum lines as the system is entirely controlled by cables.

Good job. The vacuum system is so important on these cars. Looks like you've really made a vast improvement.

With this project it is the first time I'm seeing a diesel engine in close detail. Very interesting to see all the differences to a petrol engine. Great video!

Very similiar to the system on peugeot 505 gtdt, i had the same faults like headlights down, no climate steering, no kickdown and bad brakes . So i checked all the small tubes which lead to hot devices, like agr vent, turbo and gearbox - all of them were hard and/or leak. After changing all the meters of vacuumhoses everything was fixed.

I had the dashboard out on my old 300TD for months tracking down all the vacuum leaks caused by brittle hoses and diaphragms. Plus several controller boxes full of old, dry capacitors. The automatic heating and cooling system in that is typical German over-engineering.

With the central locking there’s probably a dodgy connection at the vacuum accumulator. Most W123s won’t lock after the 5th or 6th locking/unlocking with the engine off.

A bit of tinkering to get everything working correctly well done goog stuff l am learning more about the W123 300TD improving the Mercedes-Benz one step at a time

Excellent job, nice work!! Reminds me of working on my W201, the pneumatics stuff is like lego technic once you get used to working with it. As a 4spd it took a few drives to get used to the shift points but I really liked it. Sounds like you got yours on point by the end. Good stuff!

I think they all had that vacuum headlight height adjustment, at least my UK one did. Yes the self-levelling keeps the rear suspension at the same height. But, I think the idea was that if you had 5 people in the car and no luggage, the front would be low and there was one higher setting above normal to allow for that. If you had lots of luggage, or were towing, then the weight behind the rear axle would lift the front up, and you had down settings to cancel that out.
The central locking only lasts a few locks/unlocks before it's run out with the engine off. If it's leaking, you can normally hear a hissing from one of the doors. The fuel flap locks under vacuum, but against a spring rather than vacuum to unlock it. So if the vacuum has all gone, the fuel flap will be unlocked.
Those heating controls are all just cables, as you found out. I think there are light bulbs in the heater knobs, and it looked like yours have blown? You just pull the knob off and there's a small bulb in the middle.

You did a nice job. One more thing: your headrest is to low. You better put it higher to avoid a eventually whiplash. Top head is top headrest or as high as possible. Værsgo

Before I came to Seaside I remember watching Kent at Mercedessource having fun with the vacuum pipes. Certainly a bit of a black art. Only needs a pipe to be off or broken somewhere to mess up other vac controlled items. Door actuators always a problem. Is the green "damper" actually a one way valve? I think the vac tank is under the back seat but that didn't get a mention. If so then the pipes there are worth looking at. I think the tailgate release is vac operated? The vac hand pump is useful to check for vac drop on the various units.

the 300td got a big canister under the rear of the trunk... :) No its not a one way valve... I think it is really a damper ... :)

The only two bad things about the W123 are the poor quality metal some of them are made from, and vacuum pipe woes! - I had a very handy smoke generator which was essential for diagnosing leaks. Test your vacuum cut-off as mine was a source of one of the many leaks.

Good problem solving . Do the door locks work now. Or are you still loosing vacuum over time ? - or of course were they ever designed to maintain vacuum with the engine off? . Keep up the great vids !!

Not loosing vacuum... but not sure how many times I can unlock and lock before it runs out now.... will test.. :)

Hello from Spain. Please, can show where did you the shifting adjusting under the engine bonnet?. My 300 TDT have rough shifting and the transmission fluid level and filter are OK. Thanks in advance and sorry for my english.

Great result, now leave it alone and fix something broken on another car in the fleet before it requires a full engine rebuild rather than an adjustment.
