The Surprise Harley Cam Upgrade That's Never Talked About

  • Getting a Harley cam upgrade is a big deal, it's exciting and even life changing in the transformation it makes in your Harley-Davidson motorcycle. But there's a catch to upgrading that cam, the valve train is suddenly quite a bit louder. This is normal with high performance cams, now this noise varies between brands and the typically higher lift cams create more noise. If valve train noise is an issue there are brands you might want to avoid and you may even have to give up some horsepower and torque. But if valve train noise doesn't bother you, you can choose the wild cams and not have to worry.

    I have Andrew's TW26 in my TC88 paired with a good intake and exhaust setup and head porting woke it up for sure. And it's not very noisy at all. Dyno numbers are 85.7hp 95.2lbft...pair that with Legend Suspension w rear air ride and my 2000 Deuce is fairly quick, very agile and contact with the road is smooth as silk. I know its just an 88 but I'm very happy with the Andrews cams is basically what I'm saying... 👍....lol!

    I did a 2012 103 Road Glide with an S&S 551 EZ Start Cam kit, comes with cams, plate, lifters, pushrods, S&S pump. Also did the head breathers new inner cam bearing (Torringtons) added a Vance and Hines FP3 tuner, S&S Power Duals Head Pipes and Kerker P.A.T. Slip-ons. Also re-routed the head breathers so they don't foul up the combustion air. Owner of the bike has a smile on his face everytime I see him, plus he won't be buying starter clutches anymore. If the pipes are loud enough the lifter noise shouldn't be an issue, lol. Actually the 551 kit isn't really noisy at all anyway.

      @@RyDawg1904 I didn't do anything with any of that, the heads where not pulled as the engine only had about 15,000 kilometers on it. Bike starts and runs awesome, getting better by the day, as the carbon is cleaning itself off the piston tops after rerouting the head breathers out of the intake. I also drilled the drain hole in the bottom of the head breathers slightly bigger (2 drill bit sizes) hoping the oil will drain back into the engine rather than coming out the breather bolts. so far I am not getting much oil coming out the hose at all. Also changed the filter in the head breathers as they get brittle a d shrink and probably let more oil through. I was surprised how brittle and shrunk they where, considering it only had 15,000k on it. It appears to me that these should be a regular service item.

    . A cam, any cam that uses a stock base circle is going to produce precious little added valve train " sounds" than a stock cam. When you get away from stock base circles, you start dealing with more sounds. The brand of cam has almost nothing to do with it as modern hydraulics are very forgiving. A 95 with 203 cams sounds stock, for instance. It's about math and geometry, not brand names. My .625 Red Shifts are not " quiet", believe me. When your street bike runs in the 9s, who cares?

  • @thomasheer825
    @thomasheer825 2 роки тому +12

    Sorry the HD engine is quite a bit undersquare and air cooled on top of that. The valvetrain is going to be drastically stressed when you start you start ramping up the lift and duration. You have actually a rather heavy valve train as compared to most other bike engines out there. Now take into account that this weight starts taking effect at the higher RPM ranges, remember you have to lift that cam off the seat and return it to the seat with the springs ensuring that everyting is staying in place. Now simply physics starts to take effect there with the square law rule of thimb. So now it will require a much heavier spring to keep things in correct place at higher revs. Now for the bad thing with the heavier springs will result in higher seat pressures. Now since the valve is hitting the seat at a faster veloicty due to the lift and duration being more radical, veloicity being the movement of in distance as to the degree of cam rotation. Sorry you cannot cheat physics guys, you can do things to minimize the problem but it is still there. This is why often high rpm engines use overhead cams with the cam over the valve to reduce mass, you are moving much less mass so the valve spring tension can be much lower. My total suggestion is simply with a HD engine "Leave it alone" as all you are going to do is throw huge sums of money making more horses and then even more money spent fixing the problems created by the quest of more horsepower. I actually liked the EVO motor as it was improved and didn't make the power to beat itself into pieces and parts at a astounding rate the newer engines are well known for. The best thing I can equate a HD engine to is take your farm tractor and it will run forever in the field without much issue, now set it up for tractor pulls and it will make ungodly power for a very short period of time before it displays it's internals in a very colorful manner if not constantly attended to.

    • @chrish5791
      @chrish5791 Рік тому +2

      I remember looking at the valve train of high reving overhead cam Honda engines when I was a kid. They had a set of cam operated “fingers” that came up under the valve spring retainer lifting the valve and spring back up to the seated position via the cam thus allowing them to use much lighter valve spring pressure while still allowing very high rpm. I haven’t looked at recent engines to see if they’re still using this method but I would assume that they are.

    • @thomasheer825
      @thomasheer825 Рік тому +2

      @@chrish5791 Yes remember seeing this also. Owned several Ducati Desmo engines over the years, and they work, little complex to maintain though. The old Honda system appears to be a modification of the Desmo system, which they could not copy exactly due to the legalities of the time and since with spring metallurgy and design advancements these complex systems slowly became not cost-effective, yes Desmo worked better as the valves could not float but the cost and engineering was very complex and labor-intensive to maintain so at present I think Ducati is the only one using this system nowadays. Using a radical valve system on a Harley is really not that intelligent when you think it out. The engine is tremendously under-square, with an assembled crankshaft, not a forged one-piece unit, failure-prone under high loads and high RPM's. So you can for a short time get a bunch more power, but due to physics "the glue that holds the universe together" you have a tremendously short engine lifespan. My feelings are if you want a fast bike with a lifespan over 10k before total rebuilds, Harley is NOT THE ANSWER.

    I had an HD SE cam put in when I had the oil pump upgraded in my M8 107 - also had the SE lifters at the same time. When it came out of the dealer, you could hear the valve train from space! I was not happy and even had a "discussion" with the "master tech" who said "they all do that" (I was not at all impressed as he didn't even come and listen to it)... When they finally actually listened to it, they agreed it was a problem - turned out to be a faulty lifter... A little extra noise is OK, but this was a LOT of extra noise!

    Your videos are always excellent and extremely informative, bit this is the one that may finally put my mind at ease.
    My bike has an S&S 110 big bore kit with ported heads, woods 777 cams, V&H power duels and many more performance upgrades. The tick tick tick was driving me crazy and when I recently had to do a partial rebuild (new jugs and pistons) I added Rocker Lockers hoping it would eliminate the “music”. It has not. It may be less now, but the ticking (makes me think of a sewing machine) is still there. The bike is just around 1000 miles since the new jugs were put on and I am learning to live with the sound. I don't think I'll ever get used to it 100 % but this is the video that will help me be less freaked out by it.

    Woohoo back up when hydraulic lifters are new and working properly there is no valve train noise ..and your claim of valve train noise per cam profile is not real ..none of my harleys with high lift with hydraulic lifters never made one one tic ...so i dont have a clue what you are doing wrong but for sure it at right ....YOU DID MENTION ROCKER LOCKERS that do work but as you admitted you dont know why as it was your opinion they have something to do with a harley defect ..total you are WRONG AGAIN ..
    ITS the rocker arm shaft notch cut on a larger radius than the outside diameter of the bolt that secures the shaft in place .the extra clearance has to be for fast assembly line work to successfully bolt together with no chance of stripping the threads taped into the aluminum head and down side you have a rocking rocker arm shaft that plays a tune of death rattles that is not doing any damage at all ..and if you are hearing louder noise from higher lifts is probably cause the rocker arms are move up down farther and much faster playing a much louder song banging the oversize factory machined notch against the hold down bolt that also blocks the rocker shaft from spinning or falling out the rocker shaft mounting blocks,,and the magic to rocker lockers is to take up all the dead space between the bolt and the shaft = no noise at all ever again hot or cold ..and desperately needed in every sportster EVO engine that never break but amplify the tick sound to a loud clunk bang like beating on an anvil with a hammer that gives all harley haters tons of ammo as they say they cant wait to see harley go bankrupt and never build or sell another pile of junk as they claim ..that is easily proven from the comments if you take off a month to read the negative comments about harleys from the millennials not only the main comments of every harley video on uou tube but the main complains of evey web site reviews involving anything about a harley to now google has taken a stand against the company building inferior produces with parts made overseas that do not come up to S.A.E. Standards there is even a video channel on you tube that is totally dedicated to bashing harleys pointing out all the foreign parts harley uses instead of good old merican made...as this guy in canada has a channel on every day on you tube who snickers at all of us for not knowing about the cheep parts harley is over charging you compair to the japanese brands
    1 they claim harley have inferior brakes made in by some outfit in italy ,,the company name is Brembo who was contract to make all harley brake calipers since 2006 to replace the American made delco caliper and pads that never worked unlease dragging your feet counts
    So now the millennials are convincing new harley buyers harleys have italian junk brakes of Brembo which are Only standard on exotic cars like a $2million buck McLaren but cheap to retro fit mustangs for only $39k but $60k for a jaguar
    2 the millennials claim the electronics on harleys are made somewhere in europe that is true but buy now as this canadian who is obsessed to see harley fail..this lates tactic to report where harley major components are overseas with no mentions of why what or were ..like harleys electronics that are made in europe alright in a country call Germany by a company named Bosch that also makes and the electronics for exotic german cars like Porsche BMW Mercedes ..
    Does anyone see were this is going as it was the harley haters claimed all systems fail on the old school so harley with out says over around a ten years period fazed out all 20 years behind bullshit on harleys and replaced with the exotic systems there is from major companies like
    Brembo
    Bosch
    Showa
    Sunstar
    Ohlins
    Vance & Hines
    Saddleman
    And day makers custom made by Chingka Joe that i figure since the same LED lights made in china are used in new Bugatti cars costing $4million bucks
    .ill believe the chinese LED diodes are probably the best made no matter the cost as they are simply because the Californians who invented LEDs living in Silicone Valley packet up their families and the LED factories and bought housing for the family set up shop across the pond with more choice under the chinese communist republic army than the nazi government that has taken over control of the entire state of california whos states laws no longer seem to abide to federal
    And making the chinese aesthetic seeing americans defecting from california to escape the abuses of a capitalist country seeking asylum from our 3rd Reich NAZI totalitarianp government to a communist
    Republic giving full rights to chinese to copy snything and everything but the mericans still get their share. Of bucks and dont pay uaw people $28 bucks / hour anymore to watch bots build day makers that the chinese will watch bots do same job for 28¢/ hour and a free bowl of rice and a fish for overtime on saturdays .so now all big wig mericans who come to china give latest technology to china all get chinese Red Carpet with chinese concubine love you long time . , Just like president joe biden,s son hunter does selling out america to the chinese the last three decades

    Years ago I put in on my Electra Glide a touring performance cam I believe from Andrews they would get happy at low RPM so you wouldn't have to downshift before the cam got happy one of the best things I ever did these bikes are for touring or cruising they're not full out racing bikes buy a Hayabusa if you want to do that but if you want good performance that's matched to the style of bike really a cam that gets happy at lower RPMs is the way to go unless you're going to the drag strip

    Would you recommend the Woods Tw222 for a dyna that is mostly stock with an exception of a high flo filter and 2-1 exhaust? Been researching and I’ve came up with woods or feuling 543/574

    • @GixxerFoo
      @GixxerFoo  6 місяців тому +1

      For the Dyna you might be happier with the TW 555 in the wood, it's got a bit more top end and still does well on the bottom since the dyna is lighter. That's a hard call between the two Feuling cams, but the 543 would be a good one with your current setup. When you ride, watch your RPM range and see where you usually stay and that will be the big deciding factor on the cam choice.

    I do quite a bit of cam swaps mostly high lift .560 & up mainly use high lift springs but lately I have been installing Kimblewhite beehive style springs & have noticed a quieter valve train . In my personal bike I'm running a .576 lift cam with Zippers 675 lift springs I know that's overkill but I also have a 647 redshift cam that I'm gonna try but it is noisy this winter I'm gonna redo the heads with 660 lift Kimblewhite beehives & try to still be able to swap to the 647 cam .right now the valves & spring will work with both cams ! .before you spend any money i highly suggest you talk to the top builders who understand that engines are air pumps that the more air you can pump at any given RPM the results in torque goes up at a higher rate than gaining higher CFM volume despite the differences of cubic inches of engine displacement wins championships like ,Byron Hines who designed built raced NHRA Pro Stock Harley Drag Bikes matched no tree of pro stock rules of staged green and go against all brands not just harley but all four cylinder motorcycles as well ..and for a consistent 10 years consecutively harley davidson breaks more speed records and e. t. records than any other brand ever made as harley won every world championship making harley the fastest motorcycle in the entire world for 10 years in a row faster than of all makes models years and brands ever produced .and in the entire history of pro stock starting in1983 with the Suzuki GSX-R first NHRA Pro Stock drag Bikes turning 7 seconds in the 1/4 mile still turning 7s in 2012 until that year it was screamin eagle team rider andrew hines at the home of the Indy u.s. nationals and the only time you are allowed to break out setting new national track records andrew hines became the first man riding a factory brand to raise the bar as the game charger from 7 seconds to 6 seconds at 200 miles per hour in the 1/4 mile NHRA rules of engine specs. that are the toughest rules of all drag raceing ,that in 2012 a modified version of the harley model V-Rod destroyer turned roughly a second faster than the RC engineering 4 cylinder top fuel nitro supercharged dual and triple engines on one motorcycle know as orient express funny bikes ..and since that day at indy harley still remains to be the motorcycle you will have to beat in the pro stock fastest bikes in the world ever cause of one man who at a young age Byron Hines was the master mine behind all pro stock jap bikes and engine designer of the funny bikes of the top fuel orient express employed by Russ Collins of RC engineering as the riders name for RC engineering was non other than Terry Vance ..this are the two men of Vance & Hines world famous for the highest performance motorcycle internal engine parts and mods of all years makes and models of motosports for 45 years win more competition in all categories of all motorsports including S&S except for the land speed record still owned by S&S and BUB Racing and there original test pilot Chris Reeves with the worlds fastest Bagger a harley he rides on the street everyday to go to work to his bike shop were he built his bagger that did over 218 mph with full fairing and saddle bags and not your fathers Pan Head .christ ran a small garage were he mostly builds bikes just like what you are getting ready to do .that is a bagger with twice as much torque at half the rpm of a stock harley and make well over one horse power / cu, in, of your 103 twin cam and stay together for way north of 100k of trouble free miles with the wick pinned ..sounds impossible right? Harley said we are glade we never listened ..someone else said when pigs fly ! Harley said NOW THEY DO .
    There is a page in the screamin eagle parts catalog of around ,50 or so camshaft profiles all of different camshaft combos of lift and duration all from the work of Byron Hines who in partnership with harley davidson screamin eagle for 20 years of the last 10 years winning 11 championships as Byron as it is designed all the screamin eagle cams you will find by dozens more than any other brand ..as each cam is purpose built for using in your engine to be maximum out for any personal riding style that you use our bike to do ...like king of the baggers in its 2nd year of existence were running 700+ lb harley Milwaukee Eight 131 crate motors making something north or south of 200hp baggers drafting the leaders who are the Wyman brothers of motogp racing and lone wolf Tyler O'Hare on the indian bagger of Roland Sands Designs as its Tyler who's always coming straight up the middle on his RSD indian just to trade paint with the wyman brothers with Kyle 'out in front while the other brother plays block pass on Tyler cutting Tyler off from ramming Kyle in the in the next turn to spin out give Tyler the leader for the next few laps and a kodak moment for indian and the press while they are drafting at 170 mph on the high bank of daytona this year first race opening season during daytona bike week ..and you can bet your bottom dollar those factory harleys pulling the train have Byron Hines screamin eagle cams and Byron can be found every day at the world head quarters of Vance & Hines located in brownsburg a suburb of indy just north of INDY IRP home of the u.s. nationals and with a copy of the lastest updated s.e.parts book Byron should know the perfect cam profile for your build that your description of using the woods higher lift and shortest duration with a two into one thunder pipe you are wanting 4020 john deere torque to max out at rpm of well under 3000 keeping the stock setting of your rev limiter thats factory set at 5600 rpm with no care of horsepower that could turn out to be less than stock .but i know for a fact the screamin eagle cams will make 108 ft lbs at only 3000 rpm and 105 hp at 6800:rpm and a quick look at your woods advertise shorter duration with the highest lift spells out the most abusive and destructive cam profile you could ever install in any roller bearing nettle bearing engine .especially and engine built of the twin cam design that still has the required 2 : 1 ratio but using sprockets that are less than half diameter putting undo stress on the chaim chain causing the cam chain's links to make a much tighter radius resulting in higher chain temperatures because the physical mechanical leverage of cam sprockets being half propositional to sharing the load like sprockets twice in diameter bigger have a chain much longer will. Not work the links by not bending over a smaller radius that by now you should totally confused of everything i just said as i am the worst ever trying to paint a picture of internal stress to the valve train that already has extreme load on a chain not design to bare that highly increases catastrophic engine failure that is bound to happen to all stock twin cams operated by a timing chain with an average life of 80k mileso and by adding a cam of vintage technology from the 1968 FLH shovel head that is exactly what you are planning to install as i check out your choice of cams that you could not of chosen a worse profile to cause an early failure and death of your ride that is total unnecessary ,,that basically this video has not one of any information of selecting the proper cam to achieve your personal performance gains as i think about it Gixxer fool never mentioned anything about the performance effects of duration that is again has totally different effects of lift .. here is the cam you said you want
    www.fuelmotousa.com/i-20859650-wood-performance-tw-999-6-chain-drive-camshafts.htmlj
    This set of cams will completely destroy your engine in half the time for normal failure ...did you know you are require to do machining of the valve guide and a new set of bee hive valve springs that are stiff enough to pop the top off your stock valves so you will be shopping for a new set of titanium valves and a bigger throttle body and that pipe that makes plenty of noise but no real horsepower is not going to get it for the build you are trying to do ..that if a harley shop done this today parts and labor at now $100/ hour would easily come to as much as $13,000 dollars of an engine that you can forget about having any reliability and the birth of a two wheel money pit and why you cant have nice things

It took me a long time to accept that the noise was inherent with the work completed and nothing was wrong. Now that I have a baseline for normal valve train noise I am good. I think I can now tell what would be unusual or a bad noise. Good video. It would have been very good to get over my initial concerns. Thanks.

    Im running an andrews 55h, and the crazy thing is, I only hear the top end noise when I'm riding the bike. When I listen for it with someone else riding it (im not on the bike), all I hear is the exhaust 🤣
    At least I know no one I ride past can hear it. Still annoying though.

    If things are clanking around, they're wearing out faster. Noise = wear. But if you're going so much faster, you have more time to rebuild it when you get there! It's always a trade off.

    Thanks, you video gave me a good feeling about my cam upgrade in my 06 Electraglide 88CI. It had 30k on the motor and I had the cams, billet camplate, Fueling oil pump, cam bearings, lifters, exhaust, and a little headwork with valves and springs. I got 104 tq @ 3400 rpm and 91 HP at 5k rpm. It has been a few years but seeing a 103 just a little higher with everything I had except the headwork gave me a good feeling. BTW: I have never noticed the valvetrain noise.

    I put redshift 528 in my 2003 twin cam. Bored to 98 from 88. S&S ported heads. Nice cams. 104 tq. 90hp.

    Mackie makes some top shelf cams also, well worth looking at. And yes, if you go with his aggressive profiles , they too are a little more “ musical”.
