I still remember the first time I saw this not long after the movie had been released. For me, it still stands as one of the best, funniest, surprising and all-round feel-good musical interludes in a movie, EVER! Even now, when I hear David Byrne sing this song, I still think of John Goodman and the Country Bachelors.
Don't worry, we Americans appreciate the glorious gift that is John Goodman. He is joy and happiness, a national treasure!! He is a sweet, gentle babe. He is a dreamboat in this wonderful movie. We're also glad that David Byrne calls this place home. He understands America in the 1980s better than anyone, and I wish for a True Stories II that's all about present-day cellphone tech, because it would be just as good and artistic as this movie is.
A) David Byrne is a musical genius, B) John Goodman is a National Treasure and anyone that feels differently can take it up with me!! ...plus, I forgot his bride was Swoozie Kurtz!! BONUS!!
A lot of the comments are talking surprisingly about John Goodman's singing and confidence. He had already sung and acted on Broadway in musicals prior to his movie and television work.
Considering Byrne wrote this song for him to sing that makes sense. Byrne really didn't want this to be a Talking Heads movie but Warner Bros insisted. He wrote the songs for the actors to sing and so wrote to their strengths as vocalists. I think Pop Staples was the only professional musician in the cast besides Byrne. The Talking Heads album came later. The fact that Byrne got a gospel singer to sing a voodoo song is mind blowing. Edit; and I'm just realizing I'm replying to an eleven year old comment! 😆
He's actually a pretty good singer. He looks pretty natural in the cowboy suit as well. I don't think I could pull that off... not without looking like a goofball.
Snagged this DVD from the 5 $ at Walmart...I'd forgotten this film...I watch it all the time and this tune from John Goodman is so good...Check this flick out if you've not seen it
Something I noticed on my most recent rewatch is that, on the first two verses, he uses a falsetto voice to hit the high notes, but on the last verse, he sings normally. It's him slowly getting more and more confident in himself.
John Goodman really did the job quite well. I've been a Talking Heads fan since the late 70s, but I hadn't seen this movie until about a month ago, although I had the album. It's really an enjoyable little flick. I was glad that John and Swoosie got together at the end.
Woah, at first I thought, damn this guy has good taste in music!! ... then I looked at his username and realized it's my brother. :P This really is an incredible song!
I recall John (Means brave warrior) and Goodman which gives it self, once said something like from an interview I saw on the TV many years ago in my childhood not literally remembering because of it being maybe in the process of a time lapse (haha): "The worst than can happen to a man is fame". Basicly. Praise John Goodman who I am sure has the true talent and intelligence to carry his fame, which is in its truth one of the top US-actors IMO. "Enjoying my coffee"! A personal and utterly sincere thank to this man. Jeppe, Denmark
Goodman was born to sing this song. You believe every word when Goodman sings it, compared to Byrne's recording, which, while awesome, has that "I can't help it, I'm David Byrne" sarcastic edge to it. (Am I making any sense?) [And please, *NO* "Stop Making Sense" jokes!]
Serial killers, gangsters, lawyers, cops, Fred Flintstone, the King of England, the President of the US, family men, gay men, boat salesmen, a Blues Brother. Is there anything he wont or can't do?
I was lucky enough to pick up a sealed copy of the soundtrack (LP) about two years ago at Jerry's Records in Pittsburgh. Unfortunately this song was not included. I ended up ordering the 45 of Ebay for around $8. Anywho, I've never looked for the CD or MP3 but I image it is around somewhere.
November 91, just pregnant with my son (but didn't actually know at the time) sat with friends in their flat (Rowley Way) just outside Kilburn NW6, the most mellowed, the most chilled I think I've ever been; watched every Talking Heads film that day. Was like a revelation to me. ******************************************* Now?...Son is a lovely chap. Doesn't smoke. Doesn't drink. Doesn't do drugs. Has a long-time girlfriend. He still lives at home. No Grandchildren. Tssssk. Bastards.
John’s version of this song actually was the b-side to the “Wild Wild Life” 7” single! And they’ve since released the original soundtrack with the actors singing , which is as it should be.
at the time the movie released, there were two soundtracks released -- one the actual film soundtrack and one TH's versions. the original soundtrack is long out of print now, but there are a couple that have surfaced. this one is available on iTunes on the TH compilation "Bonus Outtakes and Rarities"
Jumping onto this comment seven years later to let the people know that the full, remastered True Stories soundtrack is now on streaming services and a physical copy is included with the 2018 Criterion Collection Blu-Ray.
Gosto deste filme. Ele me passa sempre uma sensação de alegria.Fico com vontade de estar viajando pelo Texas e conhecendo estas "deliciosas" personagens!
This is great stuff, I love this movie... Do you think you could maybe upload the dinig room scene? It's my favorite, and I can't seem to find it. Thank for the clip!
he maintains a consistent panda bear shape.
LOL Not a lot of people would u8nderstand that statement!! I DO!!
I don't go to weddings. I just send the bride and groom *True Stories* as a gift
The perfect end to a perfect film, can only hope humans thousands of years from now realise how impeccable True Stories was, is, and always will be.
Now that I'm older, I think John Goodman is kinda cute singing this. He is kinda like a big teddy bear.
Mina the Bina He keeps a consistent panda bear shape ☺

The actual soundtrack, including the John Goodman scene is available on vinyl and cd
you really need to watch the full movie to feel the full weight of this finale
My absolute favorite John Goodman performance. He's the most compelling Everyman since "Marty."
You are blessed Americans , to have such a talented actor.
He is a complete star here in France. A kind of Depardieu without the unbearable big mouth.

France had Philippe Noiret.
Depardieu with bladder control
He can be big and snuggly/warm and fuzzy or downright scary. He alternates between these two wonderfully in 10 Cloverfield Lane.
oh brother where art thou
A) David Byrne is a musical genius, B) John Goodman is a National Treasure and anyone that feels differently can take it up with me!! ...plus, I forgot his bride was Swoozie Kurtz!! BONUS!!
A heavy dose of irony never hurt anyone, especially people like us.

His voice matches this song better than Byrne's.

Hey I'm still reading your reply so it's all good
The fact that this is my morning earworm seems to make Mr. Goodman’s performance timeless!
Agreed!
Idk i feel like Byrne gives it a little more energy thats missing here
john goodman is a national treasure.
I love the almost surreal chord changes. Byrne's a genius.
He's actually a pretty good singer. He looks pretty natural in the cowboy suit as well. I don't think I could pull that off... not without looking like a goofball.
It's all about confidence. Gotta go all in
People don't realize that Goodman was a musical comedy actor on Broadway before he became popular in movies and television.
"We don't want freedom. We don't want justice. We just want someone to love..."
Prescient. 😬
@@blushworthyspeaks The sarcastic lyrics seem very applicable to some mindless folks who follow tyrants lately... even if they say they want justice.
When I was much younger I'd take acid and watch this movie..... Gives me goosebumps hearing this song every time now :)
Agreed
Mushrooms 🍄.

Ya know, Goodman may not be the typical “leading man”. But he always has a swagger/confidence that makes him seem like the coolest dude in the room.
Good analogy.
Confidence is sexy to a woman, and admirable to a man*.
(*To a secure man.)

That song really tied the room together
sometimes i cry when listning to this. :) it diggs strait into your own memories, thats why this song is so powerfull. long may heads be remembered!
This is still, in my opinion, one of the best movies ever made.
Fabulous film, perfect song.
i culd no7 agree more!
The theme of call center workers everywhere. "Who'll answer the telephone? People like us."
I've never seen J Goodman this young before.
This was actually his breakout role.
I was so happy in a totally real stoopid laughin and cryin way
when he found a nice Lady to Love -
who also Loved Him rite back
Love, love, LOVE this movie and this album! So glad someone was kind enough to upload this song!
I've got to have watched this movie 20 or more times. Love it!
+OzMonkey68 I concur, that movie always cracks me up. I've loved it since I first saw it in the 1980's and I've probably seen it 80 or more times
I watched this movie 4 times in a row the first day I seen it, and by the 6th day I had seen it 11 times. I stopped counting after that.
Hes so adoreable. I love his build and his curls.
Woah, at first I thought, damn this guy has good taste in music!!
... then I looked at his username and realized it's my brother. :P
This really is an incredible song!
a truly dark song sung with the belief and sincerity that great satire deserves. bravo to my old friend John...so great...bravo. peace, t.

I was under the impression that "John" meant "God has been gracious".

GOODMAN, THE COUNTRY BACHELOR! MY HERO! & YUP I LOVE HIS VERSION TO THIS SONG!!
The movie is great. Goodman's song performance was one of the highlights of the movie.
Lieber john ich liebe dich seit 1988 ich bin heute 50 Jahre geworden Love you
One of my favorite Goodman performances. Wife wanted!!
This is so fucking dark. Not to mention beautiful and more relevant than ever.
The whole movie.
I love this song. John Goodman sounds like Stevie Jackson from Belle and Sebastian .
Great song, great movie. I can totalyy relate to this song.
You know, I've realized that for such an early performance, the idea of singing is pretty damn bold.
This movie kinda just fell in my lap. Have already watched 5 times. Just put it on when I piddle around too.
Like Goodman's singing version better
Me too! I even prefer Dream Operator with Annie McEnroe! :)
True the country western feel fits better
Makes sense, these songs were written specifically with the actors in mind which means the album is basically a cover!
Enchanted and delighted to make of their acquaintance.
Serial killers, gangsters, lawyers, cops, Fred Flintstone, the King of England, the President of the US, family men, gay men, boat salesmen, a Blues Brother. Is there anything he wont or can't do?
Everything about this is perfect!
Will have to see the movie... Love this song!!
do! i7s genius!
This is one of my all-time favorite movies. And I love John Goodman as Louis fyne.
I love everything about this so much. ❤️
I'm listening to this song over and over again... can't get enough of it. Such a catchy tune ^_^ John go on!!
Love Love Love john is the best

The phone rang just as he said. "people like us...who will answer the telephone". I picked up. There was no one there.

I love the face he has when he asks the lady what she thought. That was fan-fuckin'-tastic
Great song, great movie and a great album too.
Great tune. Great Goodman. Great film. Feel pretty nostalgic just right now.
Every now and then this song, and this video pop into my brain, so well done! This and "Wild Wild life". a great parody of the 80s music :)
I know right!? I found it at the video store a few months ago, I loved it!
Love this song.
WOW! I never noticed how much he looks like Albert Brooks in the early moments of the tune.
Wonderful x
I love this song and scene too. So glad the spell worked for Lewis.
Don't call yourself a country fan, if you don't know who this is.
Awesome! John Goodman rocks!! From an excellent movie too!
I love this song! They don't have it sung by Goodman on the Album, just the Talking Heads. Thank you. He is a pretty good singer.
John’s version of this song actually was the b-side to the “Wild Wild Life” 7” single! And they’ve since released the original soundtrack with the actors singing , which is as it should be.
Rex, Santa Claus, Pacha, Sulley, Big Daddy LaBouff and Hal Houston combined into one💖💖😍😍
I always think of this song when I call a corporation and they put you on hold, forever, and the recording says, your call is important to us...
John goodman is the best , i Love this Song!😀😀😀 Love you john !
I Love this man thanks john

@@MrDumpydoop thanks for the info!
good singer
Seen talking heads 1980 blew me away 👍👍👍
A new take on a man in a white suit. Never thought Goodman as sexy but this works for me. Greatly amusing ending.
John Goodman is Great.
John Goodman is one of the greats!
Meow Meow Meow Meow
love it
This slaughtered me when I watched it for the first time...such a great film.
Love it
The movie is great!
We are clever here. We know. Truly. This post should have 8m hits. But it is reserved for the very clever - and DB meant otherwise.
we dont want freedom we dont justice we just want someone to love
3:30 Waaaachu lookin' at BBY? Lol, goddamn, David was so ahead of his time.
I just watched this movie with my brother last night and I have to say, it’s probably one of my favorite movies. The atmosphere is just so beautiful
John ”the good man” goodman
Strange folk sent me here. Sounds like music that's forever.
This car is not a rental, it's privately owned...
Sure is some fancy driving!
only this band could say "we don't want freedom; we don't want justice" without irony
It's annoying, even the most recently released True Stories album doesn't have the Papa Legba Song or People like us done by the actors.
John goodman is the best Good song
Gosto deste filme. Ele me passa sempre uma sensação de alegria.Fico com vontade de estar viajando pelo Texas e conhecendo estas "deliciosas" personagens!

Cool
You can't get this film in Britain :( I'll be damned if I'm paying fucking import fees. John Goodman's performance is great!
Will X funny, I remember my friend got it in a place called HMV in Kent a few years ago. I wish I'd got a copy too!!
Goodman and John C Reilly
