I only recently understood how to buy this from ITunes. I bought True Stories on vinyl in 1988. At that time, my dad used to beat the shit out of me. This music was everything to me. Of course, I always wished I was bigger. And they opened a huge shopping centre, like this, not far away. I could never buy David B`s vinyl there. I`m not a big guy, physically, even now. But I`m a decent fella. Thank God for the memories and the music. Even now, I am a dream op.
In my teens, in northern England - there were The Smiths, and there was Byrne, Frantz, Weymouth (nice coastal town) and Harrison. They made me very happy. Now, it's so good, I could shed a tear. Actually, I will do, in private. Top quality material, everything about it.
I love this scene so much. One of my favorites in the whole movie... I also love the part where they play with food at the dinner table, and the big show at the end, and of course "Wild Wild Life"... but this is soooooooo beautiful. And also hilarious. All at once. David Byrne's "Mm!" at 3:25 makes me crack up.
Hey you guys, I'm in your boat! I've loved this movie since I was a kid in the 80's. And like you, Windsweptzariel, I haven't met anyone who loves it as much as me; although I have a brother who likes it.
My dad was a big fan of this movie back in the 80s. We had taped it off HBO at some point and watched that VHS a lot. I was a little kid so I never understood that this scene, much like the whole movie, was supposed to be surreal. I had always thought this was one of those things that made sense to grownups but not to me. Now that I'm in my 40s, I understand that I'm not supposed to understand this.
This song feels so beautiful and sincere yet also artificial and empty, the whole movie does. It rides a fine line between parody and sincerity. It never looks down on modern America but it recognizes its bizarreness and exaggerates it, all the while still showing the humanity that still can thrive in the artificial environment we've built for ourselves. It kinda reminds me of a precursor to stuff pc music is doing
It's a very heartfelt movie, full of bathos, but even the bathos feels sweet. The "darling!" at the end of this song feels too sincere to just be the same framing device as the fashion show more broadly. The adspeak and platitudes wouldn't hit the same heights of artificiality to me without her emoting in a way that makes the people in the consumer world still feel like fragile people who deserve tenderness and a better way.
Oh bless your heart for posting this! When I first saw it was on here I broke into tears ...this masterpiece was only films I was allowed to watch from My hippie parents [our version was on beta and we wore it out ! I now live in very vey rural Ireland -on sea- and though fairly young do not have much time here in this life -this brought me joy , m family and a laugh for how prophetic Byrne was! must run slainte and ta a mil!
This movie brings back some great memories of when I lived in the Dallas/Ft.Worth area and had just started following Ephesians 5:20 that says, 'Always give thanks for everything to God our Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.' After doing it faithfully everyday for a month I landed a part in this movie! I'm the fat guy in the blue tux! I do thank the Lord I finally shed a couple of hundred 'unwanted' pounds! :)
Andy, I love this movie, & that's the most awesome story I've maybe ever read on UA-cam! You're (practically) a freakin' celebrity! If I knew you, I'd ask you to sign my True Stories DVD cover. By the way, did you get to meet/talk to David Byrne, John Goodman, Jo Harvey Allen, John Ingle, or any of the other notable characters in the film? Stories?
YES, A FEW! John Goodman always had a beer in his hand, and frankly, always looked drunk! David Byrne was a nice and meek in person as he was in the movie. His girlfriend, a very pretty Asian girl, was the one who choreographed the entire walkway/fashion show scene. I met his cousin also, who resembled him. He was in the grass suit. I talke a long time at the private screening party to a very nice black woman who had a speaking part in the film. She was at the beginning of the movie with the Mexican guy who sang radioheads in the assembly plant. She told me they paid her $900 for the few lines she had in the movie! The lady who designed all the costumes sat beside me at the private screening and actually hit on me a couple of times. She kept grabbing my arm and squeezing me, especially when her name came up on the credits as the costume designer. She was very nice, nothing bad. Of course, my wife was sitting on the other side of me! (Not that it mattered! ;) ) And last but not least, I got to meet Emmit Smith who was there one of the days we were filming. He was very nice! It was fun and very memorable! Thanks for asking! God Bless! Check out my new novel, and my youtube channel for a few of my mini-movies! And my facebook page! facebook.com/TheWinterofOurDestiny
Andy, thanks for responding, I enjoyed your stories! The lady who designed the costumes must have a hilarious sense of humor! Did Mr. Byrne specifically tell you to maintain that unenthused look as you point to those ladies on either side of you (as opposed to smiling)? I always get a chuckle at the expression on John Goodman's face @ 2.05, when he's looking at the woman coming down the runway. And I always thought he looked pretty natural wearing that stetson & cowboy suit, while singing that country song, "People Like Us", at the talent show. Did you know that the band "Radiohead" apparently got their name from the Talking Heads song at the beginning of the movie? Any stories about the fifty sets of twins on the set? I really wish that they would release a DVD of this movie with some bonus features (like commentary, deleted scenes, gag reel, etc.) but that probably won't happen. Anyway, thanks for responding, and God Bless you too, Andy! My son (he's only 11, but he likes the movie, too) was also enthused to read a message on UA-cam from a "celebrity" from the movie. I'll be sure to check out your UA-cam channel & Facebook.
Couple of other things I remembered you might be interested in. Jonathon Demme, (the Silence of the Lambs), directed the movie. I think right after this movie he did Silence of the Lambs. Also, Annie McEnroe, the lady who sang the song, 'When you were little, you must have been big' and introduced the 'models' as they came down the runway, (you know, she never talked directly to her husband), came up to me before the filming began and started talking to me. I didn't know her from the man in the moon, later I saw her in Beetlejuice. But this is what she said, and I'm quoting word for word because it was so shocking. She walks up to me and says, 'You looking f--king great! I'm not f--king kidding, you f--cking looking f--cking great. You all look f--cking great!', and then she walked away! I didn't know whether to say thank you or tell her to go wash her mouth out with soap! Anyway, thanks for jogging my memory! Maybe if I jogged the rest of me I wouldn't have had to have gastric bypass sugery to lose 200 pounds! Have a great day!
I love this movie more than is safe to admit, and this song is second only to Pops Staples' portrayal of the voodoo priest among my all time favorite cinematic moments. For what, 30 + years, True Stories has been on the list of "If you want to understand me, you need to watch this movie" netflix and chill moments. I don't have a lot of long-term relationships, which probably isn't a surprise.
I wrote this somewhere tonight somewhere on these postings. I got blessed when I found a DVD of True Stories. It was on clearance for about $3.00 uSA. And the last one or I would have bought them both. A great favorite in this movie is when Mr. Spalding Gray tells of the people God created that loved the rocky left over creation named Texas. She who plays from Texas.
This scene was filmed at NorthPark Center in Dallas, Texas, which is a beautiful 1960s shopping mall (that may seem like an oxymoron, but it's true...) Much of the movie was shot on location in Texas.
I think the reason you cry as do I is that the voice is very similar to that of our mom's or other close female's in our lives as young children. It really brings me back to being comforted by people as I mention.
I have the same opinion. Pure poetry, pure art in each of its staging, transmitting messages that sought a deep self-reflection personal and society as a whole. They contributed a lot in such a short time of existence. They arrived and launched the proposal that we should question absolutely everything, then leave abruptly.
I suspect the catwalk is a metaphor for life itself. You just strut around for a bit, doing your own thing, then suddenly CRUNCH - you're flat on your face!
This movie transports me back to 1986 everytime I see it. Not sure why, but this seems to be the most "real" 80's movie I've ever seen. I don't know if it's the lighting, the wardrobe, or the camera work.
@sxpression= Her name is Annie McEnroe. Wikipedia has no information about her. She was in Beetlejuice as the lady who gives Lydia the skeleton key. And she was seen last year in Wall Street: Money never sleeps.
I adore the album version of this song. It's just amazing. (It's a pity though, that the rest of the album isn't of the same quality. But, still, a gem is a gem.)
Life=odd. When I heard this, it was UK north folk. Special heads, damn special music and too many memories. Industrial city. England. The shop vilnyl, had the inches, big display on the wall. Next to George H and The Fall. And The Smtihs. Greek version was James Dean, in pink. And my dream was buying these sounds. And DB made it all true. If my grand-father suffered on European battlefields, then thank-you for the sound.
I'd love to own a copy of this exact version of the song. This song's surreality is magic and natural, sort of like a song before you completely understand its lyrics. This one will remain elusive for a while.

w0mbles I disagree. It does a perfect job of letting average, real everyday people of all ages, colors, and sizes be beautiful and be in the spotlight strutting down the runway wearing genuinely cool costumes. They love these people, this scene is so sweet.

i have something to say about this video...but ive forgotten what it is. i have it written down at home somewhere.
She sings it so pretty. This song works really well with a female vocalist.
This movie is a feeling.
❤️
I love this movie...David Byrne might be an alien though.
This movie has and always will represent the 1980's to me.
I cant stop crying happily, love this movie
JettBlackheart83 every damn time 😭
I wuz born with a tail.
You're crying happily? I guess I'd better see this movie. Wow.
That's because it's TRUE.

the HEADS most beautiful song
The True Stories album is an unrivaled emotional masterpiece.
I love this movie and this version of this beautiful song. I always envisioned this song being sung by a mother to her kids at bedtime.
I sing it to my baby son. :)
this is so beautiful...love david's version, but this one should have been on the album.
This movie is so cute it made cry. Really.😂
"If the room is pink, You're in the pink! You have a right! It's all you. There ought to be a law."
You have "arrived"...
this makes me oddly emotional. so wholesome and funny, all at once.
One of my favorite movies.
archcorenth Mine too! I wish I had someone I knew who loved this movie as much as I do.
You can know me. :)

Just like a mall, this movie is a liminal space. Where superficiality can be seen or the infinite. Depends on the point of view.

i get that so much . x.
i first saw this when it came out. I listened to the soundtrack non-stop for months. It makes me heartsick to watch it now.
Such a sad, gentle movie.
It's just like a real dream, perfect! She is not a good singer, but I love how she sings. Great!
"Good singing" and "singing a song the right way" can be different things, and that's one of the lovely things about music.
This movie brings back some great memories of when I lived in the Dallas/Ft.Worth area and had just started following Ephesians 5:20 that says, 'Always give thanks for everything to God our Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.' And marvellous! It points directly to the heart.
Yes, that's a good way to put it--
Although it was a totally different song, I remember my deceased mother softly singing to me such as this when I was a child with a fever and such.
maybe just maybe in about 60 years or so people will catch up with what talking heads were about but until then let's just enjoy

Yeah, had to get my copy from ebay.
As for this version of Dream Operator, it's absolutely beautiful...worth the price alone.
One of the most talented and yet least remembered artists
I suspect the catwalk is a metaphor for life itself. You just strut around for a bit, doing your own thing, then suddenly CRUNCH - you're flat on your face!
More beautiful than it appears.
Truth.
Went to Universal Studios Japan this week. Totally surreal. Just like this.
Shopping is a feeling, brilliant!
A song about the art and practice of conscious dreaming.
Those outfits are HIDIOUS ! And shopping is feeling.
Brilliant!
I have been looking for this for a long time. Thanks for posting.
Thanks for those comments. It makes - the music, the whole thing, worthwhile x x
It’s so sweet ;)
Epic!!!

Priceless!

beautifull song

It looks like Bjork has watched this movie a few times, for fashion advice. And yes,so much for David Lynch being an original.
i think true stories is just a commentary on the 80's. it makes more sense now than when it was made.
Agreed. This movie literally takes me back to 1986.
The costume designers must've had a field day......
❤️
Dream it forward

Smarmy, judgemental, superior video. But a beautiful song. Just lovely.
you think it's judgemental? the tone of the film always suggested to me a genuine admiration for small town life. I don't think david byrne is a particularly judgemental person.
w0mbles I disagree. It does a perfect job of letting average, real everyday people of all ages, colors, and sizes be beautiful and be in the spotlight strutting down the runway wearing genuinely cool costumes. They love these people, this scene is so sweet.

This was never "normal", even in Texas, even in 1986. It's meant to be offbeat, funny, and perhaps thought-provoking.
Mmmm, are you really a muff diver?
Indubitably!
I would like to meet you some day. LOL! Just being funny.
