Black crowders are my favorite. Anytime I hear 'crowder peas', I get a mental pic of my Big Mama with a big bowl of black crowders balanced in her lap with her thumb running the peas out of that shell, while watching her 'stories'. She's been gone since the early 80's and I can still see that and hear the soap opera in the background, as clear as day. Days of Our Lives.
After this supper Mr. Brown will say he has gained 5 lbs a day since he’s been off work .Now this is the very best. I love all dried beans and peas. Purple hull is my favorite. God bless, love ya
Fried Cornbread?? You've done it again Lori! For sure, I won't be able to rest until I make myself some. Thanks so much for the great idea. Can't wait to talk to my mama about this. I don't believe she mentioned them. By the way, mom was born in Marked Tree about 92 years ago! You and Mr. Brown stay home and stay safe. God bless you and yours! 🌈🌈🌈
I've made this combination many times but I added mashed sweet potatoes. Your channel has the most authentic Southern recipes, I think. I appreciate you sharing your recipes; many are similar to what I grew up eating. Next to chicken and dumplings, fried pork chops are among my faves.
Whippoorwill Holler same here! I grew up in the Deep South and love southern cooking, at which my mama wasreally good. I moved to LA back in the 1960’s and learned to love real Mexican and Chinese food, as well as some others. Then I began dating the executive chef at a Sheraton hotel there and learned a lot about fine dining recipes. I lived in Florida in the 80’s and love pretty much all seafood. I got a great job in South Georgia running a guest house on a plantation. Already having had my own restaurant and catering business and been kitchen manager at a facility in Florida, I had learned a lot about cooking by then and got to cook and serve all kinds of great stuff with someone else’s money. And I moved to Seattle in ‘96, where there is a lot of good seafood and food from all over the world. The point is, so far, I haven’t found ANY type of food I don’t like. Southern is for sure my go to for comfort food, though, and I still have it often. And I will be trying the fried cornbread, for sure.
Dear Mrs.Lori, would you make some hushpuppies? Every recipe l have they are too sweet ,too dense, too greasy. Maybe after you and Mr Brown go fishing you could show how you fillet the fish and fry them up just a suggestion🌿⚘🌿🌺🌿🌹
Thank you so much for explaining the difference between fried cornbread and hoe cakes - I called myself going to make some fried cornbread for supper the other night because I was out of flour for biscuits and I and ended up with the biggest mess! - Of course, I used milk instead of water (and I had my batter way too thin) - I ended up with burnt cornbread corn chips! (LOL) - They were awful and I had the biggest mess! - (It is funny now, but at the moment, I said a few words, but the Lord still loves me) LOL Thank you again for the video and I will try my hand at making friend cornbread again (I do love it!) Seems like my Grandmother made them all of the time and for supper, you had the choice of a biscuit or fried cornbread. Praying that you and Mr. Brown are doing well and staying healthy! - God Bless you both & your families! - Lots of love from Atlanta, Georgia
I grew up calling this Hot Water Cornbread and I love it. My mom will make it every chance she gets, still. She just turned 96 and eyesight is not so good anymore making it difficult to do these kind of things. I could eat a whole plate of this.
Omgsh!! Lori crowder peas are the absolute best pea there is. That kitchen smells just like what my mother's kitchen smelled like when I was growing up. This past Mother's day I fried pork chops, gravy, rice etc. for my mother. This is what you call a southern kitchen. Thank you for the videos
I just love your channel. Cooking with you takes me back to a simpler time in Tampa, Fl. when the town was much smaller. It also takes me back to southern Mississippi where I spent 27 years as a nurse registered nurse and where both my girls were born.

I LOVE crowder peas! My Grammy made the best canned crowder peas! Wonderful memories from years ago. She also made cornbread with every dinner 🙂. Thank you for sharing this recipe!
Miss Lori: I’ve been roasting my cabbage instead of cooking on stove. I season with with salt, pepper, garlic powder and Italian seasoning. I roast at 375 for 25 minutes ( stir the cabbage once in awhile) or however long it takes to soften up the cabbage. I’ve been loving this method of cooking the cabbage.
I like to slice the cabbage into big round “steaks.” Line them up on a sheet pan and brush them with olive oil: then season them with salt, pepper, garlic, and whatever else you’re in the mood for, and roast them in a hot oven until the edges are nice and brown. Fast, easy, delicious, and your whole house doesn’t smell like cabbage. 😃
What a meal! It's just like my Colorado farm-raised mom made for our big family, many times, for many years. Her repertoire of delicious fried breads was included with entrees, or served as snacks. I make 'fry bread' using the recipe she learned from the Ute side of her family. Topped with homemade pimento cheese spread, or a spicy shrimp dip, it is my preferred appetizer. The batter has good texture from coarse ground cornmeal with steamed corn kernels and finely diced green onions stirred in.

I remember my mama talking about crowder peas. I probably had them when I was younger. I love field peas. I can find them in a can here in Texas. I love that fish spatula you used to turn the cornbread. My mother used to have some that were made by Ecko. They said Batter Whip on them. It got to where you couldn’t find them any more. Mother would always look for them at estate & garage sales. I was in William-Sonoma one day & there they were in stainless steel & called a fish spatula. I bought my mom, my sister & myself one. I use mine all the time. I don’t know how anybody makes gravy without one. So handy. Blessings on you, Mr. Brown & your homestead. Love & Hugs from Vicki in Ft. Worth, Texas 🇨🇱🇺🇸👍❤️🥰🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Linda Centers crowder peas are fine, but my favorite was field peas. So tiny and creamy; I just loved them. Can’t find them at all in Seattle where I now live, and I think they aren’t easy to find in southern grocery stores at this point either. Farmer’s markets down south are probably the best bet for that kind of thing.
Toni Bauer When I was growing up in Alabama, my Mom use to cook something called ‘lady finger peas’. They were also little tiny peas and they were sooo good. I live in South Florida now and can’t find them.
I just watched you all around the fire just talking and cooking. Thank you so much!!! I get so tired of the news!! We have been battling the Covid19 here! My husband has been very sick. He is recovering, though. Thanks for the distraction ❤️🙏
I’m praying for a speedy recovery. But now I see this was 6 months ago. Many are getting COVID where my son works. However, most are not having any symptoms. Weird. But thankful. I’ve prayed Ps 91 since the beginning.
@@vickip54 although it is 6 months ago, still have side effects, fatigue, body aches, memory loss. I read that they have learned that Covid can cause Chronic fathers and Fibromyalgia. Thank you for your concern.
This is too funny, I am making fried pork chops tomorrow with cabbage, potatoes and carrots as my side, what a great accompany to go with it, fried cornbread. That is what is going to be for dinner tomorrow! Thanks again for taking the time to share your gift that god gave you! God Bless you both!❤
The still shot that are shown at the beginning of the video are beautifully done. They depict homesteading perfectly in pictures. Your artistic side sure comes through.
It had been awhile since I made this and fried some last night. I forgot how much we loved these things. They're great with just about everything and you can tweak them, which is what I love about them besides the great taste! Thanks for the reminder. Love your channel!
Mom use to make those all the time growing up . Oh goodness how I miss her . I was making them for my husband one day and mom called me she was really sick . Had to take her to hospital . She ended up being admitted and they found cancer . Everytime I try to mix them up I get a lump in my throat and end up making something else. Thanks sharing this recipe . It's been ten years time to try again.
I just love watching your videos and watching you cook. I cook about the same way thank you so much for your videos I sure appreciate the time you showing how you cook I really enjoyed
My mom taught me how to make this cornbread. We use this kind of cornbread to make our dressing for Thanksgiving. Add chopped celery and onion to the batter, fry it up and toss in a bowl. Once the bowl is full of fried cornbread, chop it all up, add turkey broth, mix well, and pour in a baking dish. Bake at 350 for 30 minutes. Fried cornbread dressing is the best! Thanks for this video!
Yummy I remember my grandma making these when I was a little girl, they would sometimes pour some syrup on them & it was some really thick syrup in a can. This video took me back to sweet memories 💟
Yummy. I cook and bake all of the time however now with the stay at home action we eat 3 meals a day. So I think I’ve gained 62 lbs in 31 days home. I know I am trying to walk and ride my bike, but the jeans may turn into bibs or a dress lol. Stay safe and happy thoughts to you. 💖
My Kentuckian husband's grandmother makes these for him alongside a big pot of beans. Its his favorite meal, but last time I tried it was a big fail and they ended up burnt and greasy. I will try your recipe tonight. I love your country cooking and frugal recipes as a new bride. 💕
My mother made chili beans on Thursday for dinner (supper) and she would make fried corn bread to go with them. Thursday night Zorro was on the TV and on this one night she would let us eat in front of the tv. Your video brought back fond memories. You made fried corn bread just like momma.
Whippoorwill Holler Yes ma’am, I tell you what. We’re doing great. Just as you suspected, I’m feeling much better in the head since we quit full-time traveling. I just wish the world wasn’t feeling so crazy right now but other than that we’re good. I haven’t really noticed any change in our lifestyle as far as kids being home and husband being home from work because I’ve been sheltering in place with Mr. patient for nearly 2 years now. LOL I got me some tomato plants the other day and I found me some big tubs A landscaper didn’t need anymore so when we leave Tennessee and head northward I’m gonna have myself some tomato plants. I got me some organic lettuce seeds and I’m gonna grow those. I should be able to grow those before it gets too hot up there. So we’ve got a lot going on. I’m staying busy with all the heritage Ways stuff. It’s a full-time job and then I’ve got all the homekeeping stuff and homeschooling. I feel like a juggler with three full-time jobs but I love staying busy. I love you and wish we could share some corn cakes. Well, not technically share them because I want my own piece. 😂😘
I grew up eating crowder peas too, but the ones people in our region of NC grew were about twice the size of black-eyed peas and were a green/gray color. I'm not sure what variety they were but they were delicious. Almost like a purple-hull pea but with no eye. Granny put silver queen corn in her crowders. The peas like you are cooking we called field peas. I really don't care what they're called....I love them all! Earlier this week we had fried salmon patties with pan-fried corn and field peas & snaps....yum! I love your videos....I will have to fry some cornbread tomorrow!
This is a meal to remember. I am so glad to finally learn how to make the hot water cornbread. My mother used to make it and my Daddy loved it. And the onion powder definitely would give it a bounce up.
Awesome thank you my late mom used to make bread with water sometimes that's what i need to do just for me it will be great thanks for sharing. God Bless
I'm a New Yorker, but love ANYTHING made with cornmeal. My mouth is watering. Going to give these a try. I think with some Maple Syrup and a big cup of hot Coffee. Love, love, love your channel. Recipes are awesome.👍👍
Miss Lori, as we speak this ole Southern gal has a big pot of fresh green beans with ham hoc, on my stove !!!!!!! My house smells so good !!!!! Corn bread to come later for supper !! 🌞
I couldn’t find ANY flour in the stores, but I saw self rising cornmeal. I’ve never bought it before so I’m very thankful to see this recipe! Yummmy! Looks wonderful! Stay healthy and God bless you and your family.
Hot water cornbread is what my grandparents called this fried cornbread. I made some the other day and added some jalapeños in it. I'm a Texan so jalapeños are a staple and they were delish! Great with collard greens.
Great recipe. We don't eat corn bread here in the UK, but I recall a piece was served as standard with many restaurant meals I had on holiday in the US once (Florida). Gosh I miss Miss Lori's long hair, it was so beautiful! I hope she's growing it back now. Her choice of course and she's gorgeous whatever, but I think it really suited her pretty face. It looked lovely pinned up in a pleat too, on those hot days! God bless this special, big-hearted couple. Sending Lori and Danny much love and respect from across the Pond in England. XXX
God bless you both . My husband and I sure appreciate your channel and thank you for placing the emphasis on the Lord . ✝️🙌❤ your channel is an oasis in the daily slew of bad news .
Your recipes are authentic and delicious and your directions are very clear. But what I really come back for is your lovely personality - it just shines through! Thank you for all you do to bring a little bit o’ the South to my California home! ❤️
My mother in law made these and I love them. She always had to have superfine cornmeal to make them and it wasn't SR so she had to put the salt and a little soda in them, She always patter hers out and I never could get the hang of that. She's gone now, but I'm going to have to try this way of doing them as soon as I can get me some fresh turnip greens. They're so much better than the canned or frozen. Love your shows!
OMG, you are cooking my dream dinner! I love crowder peas with snaps with a little bacon! I have not had them in years and years! You have my taste buds and my soul!!!!!!
I’ve never made cornbread with water before. I use milk, one egg, little sugar and little flour. I need to try these. I very good friend of mine in Florida taught me to cook my cabbage with potatoes and smoked sausage like Hillshire. So delicious. That’s the only way I cook it now. Another friend taught me to fry my cabbage in real butter. Yummy. Can’t wait to try this cornbread. Thank you for the video Lori.
Ms. Lori, I have eaten a ton of cornbread like this in my life!!! My uncle taught me to eat it the next morning heated back up in the griddle with syrup and peanut butter! Yum Yum!! Love your channel!!
Yum, yum, this whole meal looks so yummy! With the stay at home orders, I think we are all eating more meals, which is good if not used to having meals with the family due to busy schedules with work and sports. The weight gain, that's a whole other issue. lol Hugs, Brenda
I made those 2 nights ago. Absolutely love them. My grandmother made them for me all the time as a kid when I was growing up in Tenn. Just butter on mine and I'm good. Good video.
Thanks for the reminder of a great old fashion but yummy depression recipe. My grandma made these a lot. I so look forward to yalls videos. I check every evening. Yall seem like such sweet people. I appreciate what yall are doing for all of us out here. Bless you.
My grandmother used to make what she called fried mush... cook cornmeal and put in a bread pan... when cool flip it out... slice and dip in egg and fry it... kinda like french toast... then we would put butter and syrup on it... gosh it was GOOD!... enjoy your posts! God Bless
O my word! My favorite with black eyed peas, rice with onion on top and fresh sliced tomatoes. Butter those corn breads and I am so homesick for the southern cooking.
Glenda Johnstone stop it! You are killing me! No excuses though. I have been in Seattle from Georgia 24 years now, and still cook a lot of southern food. Had black eyed peas and butter beans with a pork chop last night.
Omg Miss Lori these look sooo good! I have cornmeal I have to use up so this looks like a good way to do it. I think I’m gonna make some for breakfast instead of toast. Oh yum! Thanks for another delicious recipe. God bless you and Mr Brown.
That looked delicious I've never had crowder peas but gosh my mouth is watering. I'm fixing this entire meal next week for my husband and I. U cook like Miss Lorie good old country foods. GOD BLESS U MISS LORI and and thank u for sharing ur recipes 🥰
thank you so much for sharing this. my neighbor here in kansas made this and her fam loved it. she called it water cormeal. i try not to run out of cornmeal and you've made me...hungry! There's so many things you can use it for, like fish fry, cornbread... ham and beans and honey..
I’m originally from South Alabama and crowder peas and fried cornbread is on the table a lot there . Love this kind of eating ! Your meal looks so-- good. God Bless
My mother in law made corn pancakes the first time I came to America. We're don't have cornmeal in Germany. Corn was feed to the pigs. She fried them in a small cast iron frying pan long and slow in crisco. Boy o boy where they ever so good. That was 50 years ago and I still can't make them test like hers. Now I will try them again. You teach me so much, I thank you.
I haven't fried cornbread in a hot minute! This surely does make me want to get to that frying pan, and do it again. And I LOVE the crowder peas, too. I would never have thought to add a little bit of the grease from the chops, but man, oh man! That has GOT to be good! Can't wait to give ALL of this a try. God bless.
Yes, ma’am I sure am gonna make me a batch of them tomorrow, right here in Seattle Washington. They look mighty fine. You can take the girl out of the south (Georgia) but you can’t take the south out of the girl. Might add some grated onion and cheddar. Last night I had a pork chop with black eyed peas and butter beans. Yummy.
It's always a joy to visit with you in your kitchen Miss Lori :) I love those cabinets over your sink :) so practical and pretty. Your dinner looked very tasy. I especially love beans !! Blessings ~ Linda xo

Oh my goodness Crowder Peas is my favorite and give me some of that fried cornbread and a piece of onion and I I am happy happy happy
Oh Janet, I pray, yall get and stay well, I'm so sorry yall got sick
Prayers for your husband
God Bless, xoxoxo
I’m praying for a speedy recovery. But now I see this was 6 months ago. Many are getting COVID where my son works. However, most are not having any symptoms. Weird. But thankful. I’ve prayed Ps 91 since the beginning.
@@vickip54 although it is 6 months ago, still have side effects, fatigue, body aches, memory loss. I read that they have learned that Covid can cause Chronic fathers and Fibromyalgia. Thank you for your concern.
Fatigue not fathers, ha
I remember my mama making this with a big pan of fried Tatar’s and onions. Mm mm mm!👍👍
Oh yeah!
A staple growing up in middle Tenn made some tonight with black eyed peas husband likes them not really my favorite
Lynn Fraizer I live in Seattle but from Georgia. Had a .org chop with black eyed peas and butter beans last night. So good.
This is too funny, I am making fried pork chops tomorrow with cabbage, potatoes and carrots as my side, what a great accompany to go with it, fried cornbread. That is what is going to be for dinner tomorrow! Thanks again for taking the time to share your gift that god gave you! God Bless you both!❤
I love making these with some hunny drizzled on top. your meal looked so good my mouth is watering lol. good video
I love fried cornbread. My grandma made it for us when we would visit her.
The entire meal is delicious! Ooooh and the cornbread with some honey butter on them YUMMMMM!!🙋🏻👍❤️
Pinto beans, baked sweet potatoes and fried cornbread, just like my mother used to make. Mm-mmm! Loved watching this.
Oh gosh, I know it! We stay outside and stay busy, but we eat too much
We dont eat like that at work, we snack
Our low carb diet went south!
Girl I am right there with ya!!!! I was doing so well too before all this happened but I'll get back in the groove!🙏
Lost 45 lbs last year on nutrisystem - HA (sarcasm, not funny) - where am I now? NOT LOOKING TO SEE...don’t wanna know!
My Kentuckian husband's grandmother makes these for him alongside a big pot of beans. Its his favorite meal, but last time I tried it was a big fail and they ended up burnt and greasy. I will try your recipe tonight. I love your country cooking and frugal recipes as a new bride. 💕
Thank you Holley, I hope the recipe works for you! Xoxoxo
My mother made chili beans on Thursday for dinner (supper) and she would make fried corn bread to go with them. Thursday night Zorro was on the TV and on this one night she would let us eat in front of the tv. Your video brought back fond memories. You made fried corn bread just like momma.
Love these simple, nutrition based recipes.
We love crowders, too! Great corn cakes! The crispier the better. 😃This all looks so good! Love y'all❤️katie
Hi KT, hows things going, I need to to go back to work, I'm wearing myself out! Xoxoxo
Thank you so much
I love silver queen corn!
Yummieeeee! Wishing my Mom and Dad were still a live. Blessings !!!
My kind of meal right there 😋 of course when someone else is cooking that meal is always extra good. Love watching you. God bless 🥰🙏🏻
This is a meal to remember. I am so glad to finally learn how to make the hot water cornbread. My mother used to make it and my Daddy loved it. And the onion powder definitely would give it a bounce up.
Looks just like the fried cornbread my great grandmother used to make….cant wait to try it…thank you‼️😊
that is one of my favorite suppers. matter a fact I was planning to make that very supper tomorrow night.
Awesome thank you my late mom used to make bread with water sometimes that's what i need to do just for me it will be great thanks for sharing.

My mama used to make these...reminds me of her. Thanks for sharing this!
I couldn’t find ANY flour in the stores, but I saw self rising cornmeal. I’ve never bought it before so I’m very thankful to see this recipe! Yummmy! Looks wonderful! Stay healthy and God bless you and your family.
God Bless, take care! Xoxoxo
Thank you Jenn, God Bless, xoxoxo
Perfect meal! I love cooked cabbage, with beans if any kind and pork chops.. the cornbread.. yummy 😋
Your recipes are authentic and delicious and your directions are very clear. But what I really come back for is your lovely personality - it just shines through! Thank you for all you do to bring a little bit o’ the South to my California home! ❤️
Thank you
My mother in law made these and I love them.
Your uncle's a Smart man!
Xoxoxo
Looks like home....❤ Makes me miss momma. 😊
Lori, I forgot all about these, I remember 'themso well you literally made my mouth Water🌽🍞 fried thank you for the great memory.
This video reminds me of my mom she used to make this cornbread with ham and beans yummy
I have not seen meringue pies in forever! My mom (a southern woman also) was the best pie baker in the world!
Good video.
Love fried cornbread and soup beans and southern fried potatoes .
Love fried cornbread.
Sometimes I add some diced onion and peppers to mine 😊😊
That sure looked like a great country feast.
Omg Miss Lori these look sooo good! I have cornmeal I have to use up so this looks like a good way to do it. I think I’m gonna make some for breakfast instead of toast. Oh yum! Thanks for another delicious recipe. God bless you and Mr Brown.
Your so encouraging and even when I don’t feel like cooking , watching you makes me want to 😄love your channel ❤️thanks Lori 😘

I've never tried fried cornbread, but I may now. Thanks for sharing your recipe
thank you so much for sharing this. my neighbor here in kansas made this and her fam loved it. she called it water cormeal. i try not to run out of cornmeal and you've made me...hungry! There's so many things you can use it for, like fish fry, cornbread... ham and beans and honey..
I've never had fried cornbread but it sure looks good with those peas! I can smell the deliciousness all the way from there! :)
Thank you Sarah! Xoxoxo
I’m originally from South Alabama and crowder peas and fried cornbread is on the table a lot there . Love this kind of eating ! Your meal looks so-- good. God Bless
Yum !! Yum!! Miss Lori God Bless You sweet lady!!!
Love fried cornbread and that was my favorite meal. ❤️
Love them!
My daddy used to make this. We thought it was such a treat!
What a yummy supper! I'm going to have to try those fried cornbread.
Yummy.
Oh my gosh that looks so good 😊 you’re making me hungry! Thanks for sharing ♥️♥️♥️
Miss Lori those corn pancakes look so good. I’m going to have to try to make them! Thank you so much. God bless you all 🤗😊
I absolutely love Crowder peas and field peas
It's always a joy to visit with you in your kitchen Miss Lori :) I love those cabinets over your sink :) so practical and pretty. Your dinner looked very tasy. I especially love beans !! Blessings ~ Linda xo
