I am old now, born in 1949, and my Mom cooked this for us pretty regularly. In my very early years a plate of collard greens and a piece of fried corn bread was a pretty hardy meal. We also had it with beans a lot. It's a great stretcher. Even without much money you could go to bed with a full belly easily. Great with Chili as well. My Mom and dad did it eat it with milk as was popular during the depression. It sure beat the alternative. I never went hungry as a child and am very grateful for that.

I love making these. My mom would put cut up green onions. I like it with fresh corn off the Cobb. Maybe jalepenos. You can change it with the season and what you have on hand.

I am white. Once a black coworker asked me what I was gonna do over the weekend, and I told her I was gonna go and fix up a pot of beans and some cornbread. Her mouth hung open and she said “white people don’t eat beans and cornbread“. I told her she needs to get rid of that stereotype. I grew up eating beans and cornbread on a fairly regular basis. lots of people love beans and cornbread and good food doesn’t care what color you are. Cold water cornbread, fried cornbread, I love it all.

Beans & cornbread is comfort food. And I have European heritage. My mom loved cornbread in buttermilk. I prefer it sweet milk, but if all I have is buttermilk, I will certainly eat it that way.

I'm with you on that...Back in the early 80's my then hubby was a scoundrel and only allowed $25.00 a week for groceries for 5 people ( that amount had to include TP and diapers). But he made sure he had his steak at least once a week. His mom would invite us to supper a few times a week ( she was also afraid to confront him ). Anyways Jiffy cornbread was like 5 boxes for a dollar so I often made butter beans and cornbread for dinner. Sometimes we had cornbread pancakes for supper and I loved them, and I still make them now for myself quite a bit...YUMMY.

Excellent presentation. You are a good cook and also make all the right observations. My Mama told me years ago when I was a stripling lad, to look for the holes rising to the top of the pone, to indicate the cooking progression. Corn bread and beef stew is awful good too. These hoecakes would freeze very well and are quickly thawed and warmed up in an air fryer.

We call them ' ho cakes'!! I love the Martha White brand, ooowee I love them with peas or greens( mustard or turnips). Yesss lawwwwwwddddd. And my aunt showed me how to put whole kernel corn with the juice drained from them and put them in sorta thick consistency corn bread mixture, so she put them in hot oil and made corn bread hush puppies. I liked them a lot, corn bread hush puppies with corn inside. 😀

Your video brought back great memories of having fried cornbread. The way I was taught to eat cornbread was to slice bread in half horizontally then butter each side and top with sugar. Passed down from my grandma, now I am passing it down to my 5 year old grandchild Elizabeth. Thanks for video. ❤

My husband loves cornbread and buttermilk or in sweet milk and so did my parents but I will leave that to my husband. I don’t care for soggy cornbread except in my homemade vegetable beef soup. I like to split a piece of leftover cornbread, spread it with butter and put it under my broiler till it is crispy. I like to make hot water cornbread which is also fried but thicker.

So it's self rising cornmeal. I have no experience with cornbread so I kept wondering if there was any all purpose flour in the mix. I would also like to know the difference between frying in cast iron vs steel pans.

You can even put some chopped up jalapenos, maybe dust them with some Parmesan or other Italian dry cheese... sliced thin prosciutto, just cut it up with scissors... Hopefully not that nasty crap in the green dispenser... no milk use some sour cream. Fold-in some drained canned corn.... anything tastes good with just a touch of pork.. prosciutto is good.... you don't need huge slices just a small amount of pork to flavor anyting, that smokey nice flavor.... I have a huge commercial 500 lb gas stove, an old Dynasty... might be 25 or 30 years old.... I pretty much cook exclusively in cast iron....... all my pans are seasoned it's just as good as Teflon crapola... aluminum wills also rot your brain LAXVESPA-LOSANGELES

They are so pretty. What would you use if it wasn't self-rising? Baking powder or Baking Soda, because they change the taste. Right, olive oil is healthy. Virgin cold pressed is the best. Do you have a good recipe for fluffy dumplings?
