I graduated in 1990. At that time, our small school system still had lunch ladies that made all the food, homemade. We were pretty poor, and ate soup beans and cornbread at least 4 days a week. So, I really looked forward to lunches at school. The only lunch I never liked was fish sticks, I don’t eat seafood. But, the pizzas, the chili, sooo many desserts, I liked it all. So, from a former kid, thank you!

Hard to hear that you had to eat beans and cornbread so many days....but at least you had something to eat. I loved eating lunch at school. I didn't always get to eat as much as I wanted....my Mom always told us..."save enough for Dad".....I always wanted to scream out.....Cook more....it's not all about Dad...

My parents and older siblings came to the us from the acores in 1968. My twin sister and I were born in 1975. Our meals at home were so different than our friends and especially from school lunches. I LOVED SCHOOL LUNCHES!!! We were poor too so it was a real treat to eat the stuff they served. Peanut butter confection was my absolute favorite!!!!!

I graduated in 1993 but worked for the school district from 1996-2000 and was able to get to eat some of that yummy goodness. I was also lucky enough to work at schools that actually cooked and baked onsite. As a elementary school student the food was trucked in to our school and kept warm or warmed. I used to volunteer to serve as a kid too cuz they served us more or seconds

I was raised on pinto beans and cornbread. We were very healthy, too, and not obese. At our small country school, we had great food prepared by 2 of the best cooks that ever put on a hairnet! Thank you, Mrs. C. And Mrs. S.

Kay P. My husband is 17 years older than me and his family was from Oklahoma. We just had beans fried potatoes and tortillas for dinner and a couple days later made chili beans out of the beans with cornbread and coleslaw. His family wouldn’t have had tortillas or coleslaw but he still loves those meals!!!

Miss Lori, I have a 15-year old grandson who has decided that pizza is the best food on the planet. We live in California, and he has tried every kind of 🍕 they make. I sent him your lunch lady pizza video. Had to explain what school lunches used to be like; here in town there's a central kitchen for all schools and they serve pretty yucky stuff he says. So next I heard him rattling pans in kitchen, followed by aroma of 🍕 cooking. He pronounced it GOOD and ate about half by himself. Now he plans to experiment with other toppings and breakfast pizza too. He thanks you, I thank you and send you hugs

You took me back to 1968, I enjoyed the days when pizza was served, Pizza and taco day were the best lunch days. It was served with cheese only then. With corn , sliced peaches and my favorite; warm chocolate pudding cake , that was a happy meal for us back then!

The rolls. I love the squash casserole. It all taste so gooood. Maybe it was because they made it in large quantities.

When we had pizza at school for lunch the Ladies served it with green salad, canned pears and yes, a cookie or brownie. First time I had pizza was at school. Also sloppy joe's and cornbread and zucchini. Mrs. K's. rule: we had to try a bite of the new dishes she made THEN we could go back for dessert. She also always kept something in the kitchen for any kid who came to school hungry. This was back in the early 1960's.

I really love all the comments about people's memories of school lunch. More specifically, the lunch ladies! 👏🏼❤️ Your comment really hit me. The lunch ladies that saved some for us that had no lunch, asking the kids to "try" a new veggie or whatever, then you get dessert. The homemade food, and their smiles when serving us. The lunch ladies are underrated! Today, a lunch lady could be fired for feeding kids with nothing. These women should be praised. They should be national treasure. You brought back my happiest memories. Thanks ❤️✌️🙏 And thanks to our lunch ladies!!

Didn't have school lunches until highschool 1960-1964. Could only have lunch money a couple of times a week and pizza day was always one of them. Our head cook was a man, Mr. Zackery. Such a nice, funny man. When I was a junior and senior, he gave me a job serving at banquets he did. Training me to be a lunch lady? All the lunch ladies took care of us kids. Thanks for the reminder. Love to you and Mr. Brown.

Missed watching you make it. Interesting ceiling. Love the pantry! I loved the lunch lady in grade school. Sammy would let you come to school early and help her start the preparation for lunch. 5 minutes before the school bell rang she had you wash up and go to class. Lunch ladies are under appreciated. Here they cook for all the schools in one place and sent to each school. Sad but that is the times now.

And, of course, the chocolate milk. Can't say it wasn't really embarrassing and I got made fun but it must have been a little ok because thinking of this food makes me smile. Thank you for sharing. One more thing, to this day I will fix chili and I HAVE to have cinnamon rolls with it. Everyone thinks I'm crazy but that's how I remember it from school, and I love the sweet and salty together.

But my all time favorite was the cheese sandwich made in full sheet panes, layer of dough, layer of cheese, then another layer of dough then baked to perfection and buttered served tomato soup ,from grade school right up to jr. high they served it weekly, because it got rave reviews.

Mrs. Lori, I was 17 years old and stationed (in the Army) in New Jersey, Some of my buddies suggested we go get pizza. Now, I grew up in the country and I had never heard of or saw a pizza. So, we went into town and they ordered us a pizza. When it came to the table, I took one look at and said, that looks like something the cat threw up. They talked me into trying it, it didn't go well. I began throwing up. It was many years before I again tried pizza. Now in my old age, I do like pizza with a lot of my fresh garden vegetables on it.

As a schoolboy, I remember balking at the cafeteria pizza because it didn’t look like what we got at the pizzerias of the period (Shakey’s, Pizza Hut, Pizza Haven, etc.). But I ate it, by gosh. After a while I realized that I actually liked it quite well and looked forward to he days it was served. What I learned and appreciated later, is that there are all sorts of pizzas and that most were satisfying, depending on the mood of my palate. Sometimes Red Baron hits the spot just fine; other times bring on the fancy schmancy stuff. These days, this lunch lady pizza isn’t an available option. Until this video. Thanks! When I was in grade school in Vista CA back in the early 70s, the lunchroom pizza was one of my favorites. I remember it being really really good. I wonder if I'd still think that if I had a slice now.
