When I was 16 in 71’ I was as camping with friends at a place by a river we called “the bend”. I was on a cot in an old army bag and sometime early in the morning morning I felt something breathing on my face. Paralyzed with fear I opened my eyes to see a cow starring at me a few inches from my face. Ha! Having grown up on a ranch I knew to just stay still, there was a whole herd moseying around the camp and my friends, several on the ground in bags. The cow and I looked at each other for a few minutes and she moved on, so I went back to sleep. Since that time I’ve heard coyotes, wolves, and several unidentifiable sounds, but my heart never stopped like that “cow” night. Nice video by the way!

Lord Rat, it was just a another fleeting moment in the heart of a young man. Ha! Unfortunately I haven’t been there in many years, but I now live in Montana where the beautiful camps abound. We camping as often as time will allow. Still backpack, and take the Jeep out a lot. Used to dirt bike camp tons but just Jeep now so we can take the kayaks. Thanks for asking!

My brother and I had a camp on the back of our farm we used often back in the 70's. My parents would bring their tent and stay sometimes, but we slept under the stars in a place we had walled up about 3 feet with flat limestone rocks. Once my parents and my Mom's sister and family came from the city to camp for the weekend(they brought a pop up camper). My brother and I invited my cousin to sleep out in The Fort where we had a nice fire going in the fire pit and a beautiful cloudless sky with a million stars. We both slept like the dead, but when we woke up in the morning there was no sign of my cousin or his sleeping bag. When his family finally got up he came out of the camper with them. We asked him what was wrong and he said he couldn't sleep, and that our horse came up in the night looked over the rock wall and (growled) at him LOL. So he took off for the camper.

Back in the early 90s I had bought a '79 Ramcharger and one first things I done was to head up to the montains with my new toy and a good adult beverage.
I had a few friends come up and hang out and some just dropped on by. What a night, more friends, the more I drank, and this night was the first time that I had ever lost my balance and fell into a bush, not the fire. After the fire died down and the company had left I climbed into the front seat and fell asleep. Later that night I was woken up because the ride was "bouncing around" wtf? as soon as I thought that cows answered that question. They was using it as a scratching post. But being passed out and forgot about your surroundings and wake up to that...smh.

Nice video! The tent in combination with the stove seems so luxurious. I can SO relate to the trash situation. Nothing worse than finding a good camp and then seeing a bunch of used TP laying around and rotting food. Some people never learned to respect nature. This is why I think the Boy Scouts was such a good organization in its day since it educated us and taught us respect. The creepiest experience I ever had was backpacking in the San Rafael wilderness in the Los Padres National Forest. I did a one night solo trip ahead of meeting with some friends the next day. When I parked I saw warning signs about mountain lions. This made me a little nervous since I was alone. After hiking for a few miles, I stayed at Coldwater camp along the Manzana river. I was just getting ready to sleep when all around something was bumping into and scratching the bottom of my tent. It was totally dark and it really freaked me out. I grabbed my little pocket knife and flashlight and went bravely out into the dark. When I looked down I saw well over 100 arroyo toads all heading for the river to copulate. It appears that my tent was in their way. Since I knew what was going on I went back into the tent and had a good night sleep. Not a toad was found the next morning. I've ran into bears, bobcats, rattlesnakes and coyotes but have never been as scared as I was by a hoard of sex crazed toads.

My scariest moment backpacking was in the Quetico Provincial Park in Canada. I woke early one morning to snorting sounds right outside my tent. The sun was just coming up and it cast a shadow of a huge animal standing over my tent. I laid absolutely petrified in my sleeping bag while it walked around my tent, snorting and pressing gently on the walls. My friend (another female) was camped about 100 yards away. I was too scared to call out to her and had nothing in the tent to defend myself with. The whole encounter lasted less than 30 seconds when I finally heard the thing walk away. I waited a few minutes before I mustered enough courage to exit my tent. What I found were moose tracks, a cow and it's calf that approached just inches from my tent.
Thanks Luke for that video, even though it was not one of your backpacking adventures, it is probably one of my favorites.

On a trip to California in 95, I stealth camped for a week in the woods back from Trinidad beach near Eureka. We called it " Camp Wouldn't Wanna Be Ya". I fell asleep to the surf and woke up to barking seals. The tent I brought didn't have stakes or ropes. I made stakes and used my shoe laces for ropes. It worked. Never had any problems with people, but keep your knife close, always.

Greetings. We spent some lvery happy times in Eureka, CA. My parents moved there from WA and my husband and I spent our honeymoon, 60 yrs ago, camping along the Oregon Coast until we got rained out and headed for Eureka We gave a young man a ride as far as Eureka, and dropped him off , He was going to stealth camp in. ‘duck blinds” the area. . My folks were traveling and I had a key to the house, it was half of a big old elegant mansion. . made into two “units”. it was so elegant and spacious. We went charter boat fishing out of Trinidad. it is a small world.. and some things never change. I hope you made it back to your Camp “wouldn’t wanna be ya”. We loved Pink Floyd, too.

So many have fade in ,fade out , and low volume, , some i can barely hear and rely on CC’s. This hot tent adventure from 2020, even, has such crsip, clear sound and full volume. i even had to turn it down a bit, his equipment picked up every snappping twig, footstep and sizzle of his fry pan..

Beautiful location plenty of space. Yeah these days you have to keep a good supply of heavy trash bags, "picker upper" and good disposable gloves in your car just to clean up the last guy's mess. Love that cot and stove, tent could be bigger. You could keep a "store bought" log or two in your rig to use in the stove in case all the firewood is too wet. After having chowder you should be good with beer the rest of the day/ evening. Have you tried a "perimeter alert" with fishing line, small bells for sleeping. Wildlife cam or two would be fun. You can find them for thirty or forty sometimes in the closeout box. Thanks for having us along and for a great video.

I live near a beach in a rural area. People come on weekends and holidays from the city and leave bottles, cans and litter of all sorts . including those Styrofoam fast food containers that don't break down. Seabirds, turtles and fish can choke on that stuff.
I am always cleaning up, and take gloves and a pointed stick with me.
Fortunately a lot of locals have the same care for the environment.
We need more county bins in parking areas at the beach. at the moment we have to trailer this junk to the local tip a 40Km round trip plus $35.00 to dump the trailer load.
Why don't people just clean up after themselves?

In 1967 and a Boy Scout, I was at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. My section was taking the northern route of doing half of the Ranches trails. We were like 5 days maybe more when we were told of a crew that was stealing camp food. We were instructed to set a bear bag and hang it high and dry. LOL
So we hung it up and it was secured but the crew got into it. The crew was made up of a few Chipmunks, a Badger, and the leader of the crew was a moma bear and her cubs.
The Chipmunks chewed the rope, when it hit the ground the Badger opened the bag and got what it wanted and the moma bear got what she wanted and I had a visitor while she was busy. I had one of the cubs come to my tent and play with the bottom of my sleeping bag. I rolled up into a small ball and the cub sliced up the bottom of my sleeping bag. The whole Scout Patrol had to go on a survival experience 3 days earlier than we were suppose to do. We ate berries and other wild plants.
I loved that experience and wish I could have done it again, from the smoked clothes with the black tint of using pine to help dry our clothes to taking a shower by cutting fire wood and smelling like rotten eggs to the new friendship and fellowship I learned at 17 years old. WOW it was so great, than going in to the Marine Corps at 19 years of age.

Thank you and to the people who cares, for being a good person and taking care of the environment. Respect to you sir!

Craziest thing that ever happened to me in the woods would have been when I found a 6 foot long snake sharing my sleeping bag when I woke in the morning. I never felt it crawl in, and it left by itself after I got out. It was not aggressive or poisonous, so it all worked out well.

Most snakes are deadly in Australia when camping. And the pythons will crush you.
Not to mention poisonous spiders and scorpions
You cannot have an open bottomed tent like that and hope to survive.
You hang your boots up inside your sealed tent and check them before you put them on

Great video Luke. I was brought up hunting and fishing, camping year round. We always cleaned up behind ourselves. If you took it in you brought the wrappers cans bottles whatever out with you. We never shot anything we did not eat. If we caught a fish on bait and it swallowed it we keep it. It wouldn't live so bring it home. People have no Morales na respect anymore. We grew up to respect the land, to respect the elderly. You didn't bother another persons stuff. You ask if you needed to barrow something. Keep up the great videos Luke god bless you and Susie and family.

Luke you did very well with all the equipment you had to test out for us .. I really like the wood stove. I think your tent is pretty neat too.. Great cot set up to sleep on .. Nothing wrong with drive up or in camping as i do it myself and most trips i have it all to myself ..But like you i get really upset when i pull into a site i have used for the last 50 years and there is trash everywhere and beer bottles all over .. Great camp you should do more like that .. I'm a backpacker myself but truck camping works and i hike from that point ...great video

I am a very new subscriber, and am watching ALL of your camping videos, not necessarily in order either. Just watching them as they pop up. One thing I really enjoy about you Luke, and Susie, is your responsibility to nature. Just like my parents showed me as a kid, when they saw garbage, they handed us gloves, or sticks or tongs and had us pick up the garbage. The ONLY garbage we were not allowed to touch was needles, bullets, and guns, and anything that looked like blood. Sometimes we fond stuff like that--if it had to do with firearms, my Dad would bag it, tag it, and go to the nearest payphone, (did not have cell phones back then) and call police to come get it! Usually the local sheriff where we were camping would come, gladly to pick up any weapon found. One time we found something related to an opne case, that helped solve a case! Will not say more, as it would not be right in this format. Anyway, you have my blessings Luke. Hope to see some Videos of Susie soon. Blessings from Gresham Oregon, Michelle Reed

I was hiking at night in Germany and as I passed a patch of trees I heard a low growl like the sound of a huge dog (Rottweiler came to my mind then). Then wolf crossed my mind. Whatever made the sound caused my heart rate to rocket and I could feel my chest wall pound but I knew better than to run which might have caused the animal's natural predatory chase instinct to kick in. The only "weapon" on me was a Victorinox multi-tool and a wooden hiking staff I used for Volksmarching events. Another scare happened on the Mogollon Rim of Arizona. As I was in a squat position I felt I was being watched. I turned slowly and about 50 to 60 yards away up on a high rock was a mountain lion and it was crouched in a spring mode. I yelled (more like screamed) for my buddies to come help me. As they ran down the path towards my screams the animal turned abruptly and disappeared.

back in the day (40 yrs ago) at scout camp, late at night we were awaken by a crying. the scout masters woke everyone up we all gathered with our high powered (not) EverReady flashlights with the thought there was a scout that wondered off in the middle of the night and ended up in this marshy pond. We were shining our pathetic lights off into the darkness all the while listening to this child crying. but to no avail we couldn't see him. One of the scout master then drove his truck down to the pond and turned on his off road lights there before us were 2 Crane mating. there was this tone that went across the night relief that it wasn't a child, but a disgust that we were woken up for nothing, and a laughter that yes we were awaken by sounds of nature in the heat of the night. cheers.

I believe in (leave no trace). I've been an outdoorsman ALL my life. I'm 63yrs old and still LOVE the outdoors. Though I can't do trails or long hikes I still do car/truck camping. Hope to meet you soon.
