    I agree that Calvin would probably continue on his way to feed from the humans, but there's also the possibility that he would understand that the humans didn't mean to be so bad. Yeah but the thing is calvin is young and primitive, he may be intelligent but he doesn't know what humans are, he only sees that they are on the ship. Before he could make a rational decision like that he'd first need to be put in a situation where he is forced to think long term and learn about his enemy, in this movie it doesn't seem he was ever put in a position like that since nothing could truly stop him in the moment.
      So, the most logical thing to do when something tries to harm you and it can't actually defeat you, is to eliminate the immediate threat, which is what we see happen in the movie.

    There are two theories I have: 1. Because of Mars' fading atmosphere and depleting food source, Calvin would evolve to grow according to its prey's bodymass and after it would run out of the prey's nutrients, it would slowly consume its own body as way to "double its food source"; and because of it's intellingence, whatever Calvin was going up against, IT WAS SCARY. Or 2. Calvin was designed by something, it devoured the entire planet, and when there was nothing else to pull energy from, not even the atmosphere, it began to consume itself until it was only one cell and went dormant. Either way, for something like Calvin to exist in Mars makes me wonder of what other horrors lead to the creation of such a deadly and smart being. O_o

    I always thought Calvin was just an animal that was being put into a bad situation. It wasn't hostile until something was hostile to it. However, I fully concede that hostilities were bound to happen in the future. Even if not when Hugh zapped it, then sometime in the future when it was running out of food, or growing too big. You can put a big lion and a big bear into a cage together, and even if space was not an issue, but only fed these 2 large creatures a small amount. Sooner or later they would fight for that food. We see that in the wild all the time! Eventually an animal will get so hungry that it will fight a much larger predator for what little bit of food there is.

    His docileness is actually quite odd. When he was hugging the leg, dude being hugged didn't even initially feel it or cry in pain. On top of that, Calvin seems extremely efficient with food and material, especially with his cell being able to go into hibernation like that, so he probably doesn't need food that badly. He's also clearly very intelligent and so could've been taught to do stuff for his food. Plus, considering he is from a planet, there should be a limit to the size he will grow to before natural genetic limits hold him back, although at that point he might just split in 2 or something, or not have that limit in g=0 environments.
    I'd say the best comparison in behaviour to make is that of an octopus (my friend works at an aquarium and spends a lot of time dealing with shit from the octopus they have there); will probably be cheeky AF stealing fish from other tanks and stuff but is intelligent enough not to bite the hand that feeds it, so long as it is fed, very curious but cautious enough not to just attack everything it thinks it would win against unless provoked.
    So, with this as the basis of his behaviour: Calvin could be trained to do all sorts of things, and would be really good at many of those things. Being able to store oxygen means he could repair parts of ships with far more accuracy than a human, once he learned to act accurately. He could be his own ship clinging to rockets that launch him around, along with some railguns, if you just put some slow-release oxygen canisters inside of him, and he would then be humanity's best fighter against xeno scum.
    But if he just wants to eat stuff, they could've at least yeeted him into the sun or something by luring him into a capsule with some food and saying their goodbyes.

      it's implied that he killed all life on Mars. It's not like most life on Earth that can generally reach equilibrium when something new comes along. For that you have to have high enough diversity, and selection pressures that are strong enough to keep the evolutionary arms race going, but not so strong that nothing is able to survive them. Humans would be an example of a selection pressure that's too strong. Whatever caused the Permian-Triassic Extinction c. 252mya, and wiped out something like 80% of all life on Earth, was almost too strong.... life was almost relegated back to insects and microbes (just as an aside, our current mass extinction is several times worse than the P-T extinction and is so far the only known mass extinction that has affected insects...)
      Kalvin seems wayyyy stronger than either of those. He could likely strip all life on Earth within a few years or decades. He is less like a new apex predator that will reach its own equilibrium with prey through negative feedback loops, and more like a swarm of locusts, that rely on constantly finding new sources of food to survive and grow, leaving devastation behind them. And because he can seemingly go dormant for likely millions of years (because it seems highly unlikely that Mars has had life any more recently than that, if it ever has), he can do this locust thing over extreme timescales, geological timescales. He eats a planet's entire biosphere, and then hibernates until either an intelligent species inadvertently transports him to new worlds, or he is ejected from the planet by natural means (volcanism, meteors, etc). It may take billions of years for him to reach a new world this way, but he doesn't care. That's just how his species works. Eventually the comet he's hitched a ride on will collide with something that has a biosphere, and he can start all over again.
      There's more evidence for this too: the fact that he seemingly breaks back down into a single-celled form once he's done eating, so as to cover as much of the planet's surface area as possible and make it far more likely that one of those cells will be able to seed another world.

    If science taught me anything, it's that every creature has an ecosystem, so if Calvin is from Mars, then there would have been a place for it to feed and grow, but there would also need to be a creature that can eat Calvin, so that means if they can find other life on Mars, they might find what eats Calvin.

    And this alien comes along, and then creates fractures in the glass
    Let’s just think about that for a moment, this thing created fractures inside of something made out of pretty much industrial grade steel (probably even higher quality) along with also, probably very strong glass, and at the very least damages it
    It also broke a human’s hand when it was pretty much a baby compared to its larger form

    A protagonist is the main character or hero of the story, in the case of Kalvin he's the antagonist, or the opposing force/character that conflicts with the protagonist or his/her group. Not necessarily a villain, as an antagonist isn't always evil, just the "bad guy" of the situation. However, the protagonist isn't always a good guy either. A good example is any Deadpool comic. Wade is the protagonist, but isn't always fighting for good.

    Calvin is quite interesting... I haven't seen the movie yet, but from what I've gathered from your videos...
    Calvin is highly adaptive, and potentially grows smarter as it grows larger. He also adapts to his environment. The movie presents Calvin with an environment that requires aggression to survive, however if the humans were more peaceful with Calvin, then he might have adapted more social traits. I can imagine, given time, an adaptive alien with traits such as Calvin could even learn methods to communicate, even start learning the language humans speak if it would be beneficial to him. You suggested that Calvin is like a wild animal, however with adaptability and growing intelligent, Calvin is even more unpredictable than a wild animal, he can become a wild person... one capable of wild and illogical choices.

    the only flaw to your idea that he would still end up continuing to grow would be the adaptation clavin shows. in the beginning he grew much like a plant light and air. at one point he would reach a sustainable limit and without any external threats to adapt for there would be no reason to grow past this self sustained limit. so food would not likely be much of a problem so long as the air supplly didn't fail again. the rest of it though ya would likely happen because that stable size could still be bigger then what the rest of the team would be comfortable with.

  • @sparking023
    @sparking023 4 роки тому +1

    Okay, very limited biology knowledge here, bear with me. Calvin seems to be what you can call an apex predator, top of the food chain, highly adaptative and efficient. But judging by the conditions of Mars and how it behaved after awakening, it fits the role of a parasite better, and not a common parasite, but an alien one- duh, it came from space. Yes, but not that type of alien. Here on Earth, when you introduce a new species to an ecosystem, it becomes an alien species to that environment, and it can have really serious repercussions in the balance since the ecosystem might not be prepared to deal with that.
    So the equilibrium created from competition, symbiosis and many other interactions get thrown off. That is probably the reason why Mars was bare-bones if it ever held life before. Without any pressure from the ecosystem to refrain his growth, Calvin can simply expand as long as it has resources (the Flood, perhaps?). And yes, I agree that it acted on self-defense. we can't exactly call it "bad" because it was self-preservation in action. You can't blame the tiger when it kills the pray. The only problem here is that Calvin's actions are bad for us humans, so YEET this alien starfish into space! Also, it is interesting to notice how they differ from the Xenomorphs as the black stabby bois literally are bioweapons designed to kill

    • @sparking023
      @sparking023 4 роки тому

      @xrelik nice take there. I ruled out the symbiotic possibility because Calvin remained dormant, implying it needed something to latch on. I can't tell if in all symbiotic interactions both beings need each other or if there are case where they can go on by themselves... Anyway, it raises the question: what possible benefits one could get from having a space starfish latched on them?

    I enjoyed this video but all of these fact are more of opinion then anything else. making a suggestion paired with word such as "probably" is nothing more then a theory at best. in this context we could also say "Calvin" was not aware that the actions and or choices it was making would result in death for whatever creature it came across. There are a multitude of possibility's as to who, what, when, where, why . And my self being someone that has yet to watch the movie is quit frankly probably in no position to debate what is or isn't but you have sparked my interest :). At the end of the day were taking our real life experiences and applying them to a fictional story (for the time being) But I will agree that first base nature of any animal is self preservation so when faced with a dangerous situation the whole "fight or flight" mind set takes control for the continuation/survival of said specific animal and or animals.
