I bought a pc and my pc still blows both the Series x and ps5 out the water on every level, I've never looked back at consoles since.

@@legros731 Fans are weird. Sometimes they last forever sometimes they go early. Having an easy way to change it out is a Godsend. I have PS2's with the OG fan still going strong but have some where it died after a couple years. Granted you need to clean them too to keep the motors from being too worked up. So Another win being able to take it out and clean the fan. :)
For the people wondering how you clean the heat sink: There are two ports in the case that you just put a vacuum nozzle up to to clear the heat sink. So you remove the fan, clean what you can from there, and then use a vacuum nozzle at the two ports. Sony doesn't expect you to take the whole thing apart just to clean it out.
For good reason it's probably a Sony proprietary blend and we don't know the longevity and testing they did to make sure it will last the distance. Normal ones are known to have some issues.

I took my launch Ps4 apart and that fixed my noise issue with it,the Pro was even easier to clean. I really can't wait to see how well those vacuum ports work for Ps5.
Yeah alot of people complaining their PS4s fat, slim and pro run like a jet engine when you can just follow a simple how to and clean the fan and heatsink and maybe replace the thermal paste if it's all old and dried. Fixed mine as well and it's so quiet now.

I thought Steve of Gamers Nexus was the most anticipated teardown because he brings the pain with some iFixit kit, heat gun to remove any glue, pliers and and a dremel.

Well you can see with the way the fan is like at a central point that it's moving air through all those directions at once. Which gives it a ton of surface area for a single fan to displace the heat.

And Better cooling means better performance. and how does the air flow in the box? the box has a curvature inside. the most important thing is how the air flow goes through the heatsink, is there counter flow or co-current?

For me I've always wait a year before buying a next-gen console. For 3 reasons one to make sure that they work out all the manufactured bugs that both console would run into two to wait for a cheaper price and 3 just to see people like you UA-camrs to post videos and comparison of each other to do breakdowns where I can finally make my final assessment and I think I came a little bit closer to my decision. Technically unenforceable not illegal. If the stickers where illegal you wouldn't see them because the companies would be breaking the law. They can legally still use them they can't void the warranty without a reason beyond the sticker being removed. Like nhuKer said above they are mostly used as a deterrent against less informed consumers.

The sticker serves the purpose of a checkpoint whether or not the console was opened. The sticker is not tighted to anything legal. What to do when it's not intact is another story. 🍻
I recently installed all Noctua fans and heat sink in my PC. Running nice and cool. Love that beautiful brown haha! You should check out the video Gamers Nexus did on the PS5 thermals. Sony kind of messed up. They have a chip running at around 93C! Not good.
I feel like the Series X is the better design. Apparently they wanted to make the Ps5 larger than it is now which would've been terrible but it's still pretty big. I just don't understand what those big fins are for

Imagine someone creates a custom ribbon cable/board interface for the Ps5 to support a sort of 'raid' NVME to throw massive amount of SSD space? Basically you plug it in the slot and seemingly make space for multiple nvme slots.
Unlike popular belief the liquid metal is not a very good heat conductor that is why it is best to put it as thin as possible to make good solid contact._

@Charles Szasz It's not the only reason. Typically the later revisions have less rates of failure as well and they're usually cheaper. I honestly don't have a spot for it right now, it wouldn't fit in my current setup.

Still waiting on some analysis of the other chips on these systems. There's 512MB of DDR4 near the SSD that's obviously a buffer, but it would be good to know if there's an ARM chip on there like the PS4. Also really want to see a die shot of the APU to compare against Series X|S and RX 6000.
@@austinfondren2590 the actual silicon chip itself is called a die. With the right equipment and skill it's possible to get an image of the actual integrated circuit etched into the die, showing structures like CPU and GPU cores, caches and the like. That's typically referred to as a "die shot".
@Apple it does a few small background tasks and has its own 256MB of DDR3 RAM. It was supposed to handle downloads while the console was in rest mode so the main APU could power down. It turned out not to be powerful enough though, so the main APU still remains powered.
They should have also made the controller have adaptive thumbsticks so when you pull on something or walk against something, like in wind or water, it provides resistance to make it seem like the character is working harder to walk.
What would happen if you just re-assembled it with the old liquid metal without replacing it? Asking in case I ever buy an used PS5 and the previous owner decided to fully take it apart.

Do you remember when the Sony Japanese factory worker was holding one in his arms and everyone thought the picture was photo shop?. They looked at the PlayStation compared to his body. No one could believe it was that big. However, it is that big.
It's big but that japanese factory worker is probably like 5'6. Maximillion dude did his unboxing and it doesnt look as ridiculous cause he's 6'4. It's around the same width (horizontally) as a standard AV receiver, a few inches less in depth and about half the height.
I love and own both systems, but its obvious that Microsoft clearly had the more innovative and efficient design. The dual motherboard setup in the Series X is a much better choice.
As a PS5 owner I can say the Series X design is definitely more elegant. Jony Ive had this interesting design philosophy in his early days at Apple: let a product's form be true to its nature. I think Microsoft really took that to heart with the design of that machine -- the form is quite literally defined by the the shape and size of the cooling system inside. They've created an enclosure that simply directs airflow with a little extra size, material or design flourish as possible. And I really respect that almost austere dedication to function.
@@goldensun3551 I agree but that's because I thing the PS5 has less multimedia capabilities overall. They're both great systems and each have pros and cons. For me personally, more of my friends play on Xbox so I use my Xbox more, but both are great.
2 different companies. 2 different solutions to the same issues. It seems Microsoft had the better team in place to create a console. It looks like Sony just Frankensteined their machine and let it grow and grow and just said, "F it ... release it" while Microsoft took a puzzle and pieced it together in a way to keep it compact in a very thoughtful and efficient way.
Surprised there isn't a thin mesh filter at the air intake. It would make it a bit easier to just vacuum out or clean the mesh, while reducing micro particle buildup and the possible need for a teardown for cleanout. I've seen these on PC cases and very little dust actually makes its way to the fan or inner system after a year of 24-7 being powered on. All in all, looks like a beast of a console. You're a brave soul doing such a teardown, much like with laptops, I can never get those thin ribbon cables back in place.
When putting back together do you ever turn the screw anti-clockwise to hear a click before driving it home? I do this to avoid cutting another thread.

Far as I can see, this "liquid metal" is a metallic compound put between the chip and the sink to help conduct heat energy between them - almost like some sort of thermal....paste. Not all thermal paste is metallic, granted, some is ceramic based. But other than that?

Liquid metal works exactly like thermal paste: it fills the microscopic gaps on the surface between the CPU/GPU and its heat sink. The difference lies in its composition and properties. The main component of liquid metal is Gallium. It’s a soft metal with a low melting point and a high boiling point. When it’s combined with the other components and metals like Indium, the melting point falls to -19C. This is why the compound remains a liquid at room temperature. There’s little to no evaporation due to it having a relatively high boiling point of 1300C.
It's been said a lot on this channel that the disc drive was an afterthought and added on after but that seems to fly in the face of common sense and efficient console production, where if you're making two versions of a console you'd want to make them as similar as possible for cost and efficiency. If the only thing different between the two versions is the disc drive, it would be a huge waste to not use the same motherboard and general internal construction, and then just allow the disc drive to be mounted onto the main unit. Just my thoughts.
My understanding is that they can't deny you a repair on a broken warantee sticker, but it's fine to have one so they know if you've been poking around, to better help them diagnose what might have failed, and if you might have broken anything.
Maybe you didnt notice but there were a couple of noticeable framedrops during the sandlevel. Is this by overheating after reapplying the liquid metal or is the Hardware falling short?

All of the quality plastics went into the DualSense controller. It seems they had no choice but to make the console itself out of recycled sandwich bags from the Sony cafeteria.

Technically unenforceable not illegal. If the stickers where illegal you wouldn't see them because the companies would be breaking the law. They can legally still use them they can't void the warranty without a reason beyond the sticker being removed. Like nhuKer said above they are mostly used as a deterrent against less informed consumers.

The sticker serves the purpose of a checkpoint whether or not the console was opened. The sticker is not tighted to anything legal.

Coming from the pc building scene, I have to say I am impressed with the heatsinks and cooling solutions being used in the new consoles.
I recently installed all Noctua fans and heat sink in my PC. Running nice and cool. Love that beautiful brown haha!
You should check out the video Gamers Nexus did on the PS5 thermals. Sony kind of messed up. They have a chip running at around 93C! Not good.

Unlike popular belief the liquid metal is not a very good heat conductor that is why it is best to put it as thin as possible to make good solid contact._

@Charles Szasz It's not the only reason. Typically the later revisions have less rates of failure as well and they're usually cheaper. I honestly don't have a spot for it right now, it wouldn't fit in my current setup.

@@TheKogunEnjou The videos they made aren’t really that good. They were measuring the outside of the console, rather than the inside, which isn’t very accurate, especially in the case of the PS5, where the panels are separate from the console.

@@kastaway-mtx It’s not a good comparison. The exhaust vents were ok but they should have at least taken off the Ps5 side panels. That would provide a better comparison. Hell, they should’ve just opened the back of the Xbox and seen the temps of the actual internals.

Still waiting on some analysis of the other chips on these systems. There's 512MB of DDR4 near the SSD that's obviously a buffer, but it would be good to know if there's an ARM chip on there like the PS4. Also really want to see a die shot of the APU to compare against Series X|S and RX 6000.

@@austinfondren2590 the actual silicon chip itself is called a die. With the right equipment and skill it's possible to get an image of the actual integrated circuit etched into the die, showing structures like CPU and GPU cores, caches and the like. That's typically referred to as a "die shot".
@Apple it does a few small background tasks and has its own 256MB of DDR3 RAM. It was supposed to handle downloads while the console was in rest mode so the main APU could power down. It turned out not to be powerful enough though, so the main APU still remains powered.

They should have also made the controller have adaptive thumbsticks so when you pull on something or walk against something, like in wind or water, it provides resistance to make it seem like the character is working harder to walk.
Easy solution to Disc noice is apply Thin layer of 3m Heat Resistance Nolathene Rubber Adhesive Sheet, Which reduces disc drive noise by half!

Jakub Krych well you do need to replace it eventually because it will eventually absorb the copper but it takes a really long time for that
@@jkrhu Thank you! When he said the power supply would be hard to replace. I just kept wondering why not just take out the entire cage board and all without disassembling it. I just didn't know what screws anchored it down to the shell and what screws kept the cage halves together.

I think the liquid metal that Sony used is probably a specific compound to give it longevity, not sure if replacing it is a good idea.

It's around the same width (horizontally) as a standard AV receiver, a few inches less in depth and about half the height.

I love and own both systems, but its obvious that Microsoft clearly had the more innovative and efficient design. The dual motherboard setup in the Series X is a much better choice.
As a PS5 owner I can say the Series X design is definitely more elegant. Jony Ive had this interesting design philosophy in his early days at Apple: let a product's form be true to its nature. I think Microsoft really took that to heart with the design of that machine -- the form is quite literally defined by the the shape and size of the cooling system inside. They've created an enclosure that simply directs airflow with a little extra size, material or design flourish as possible. And I really respect that almost austere dedication to function.

@@goldensun3551 I agree but that's because I thing the PS5 has less multimedia capabilities overall. They're both great systems and each have pros and cons. For me personally, more of my friends play on Xbox so I use my Xbox more, but both are great.

2 different companies. 2 different solutions to the same issues. It seems Microsoft had the better team in place to create a console. It looks like Sony just Frankensteined their machine and let it grow and grow and just said, "F it ... release it" while Microsoft took a puzzle and pieced it together in a way to keep it compact in a very thoughtful and efficient way.

Surprised there isn't a thin mesh filter at the air intake. It would make it a bit easier to just vacuum out or clean the mesh, while reducing micro particle buildup and the possible need for a teardown for cleanout. I've seen these on PC cases and very little dust actually makes its way to the fan or inner system after a year of 24-7 being powered on.
All in all, looks like a beast of a console. You're a brave soul doing such a teardown, much like with laptops, I can never get those thin ribbon cables back in place.
When putting back together do you ever turn the screw anti-clockwise to hear a click before driving it home? I do this to avoid cutting another thread.

Liquid metal works exactly like thermal paste: it fills the microscopic gaps on the surface between the CPU/GPU and its heat sink. The difference lies in its composition and properties. The main component of liquid metal is Gallium. It’s a soft metal with a low melting point and a high boiling point. When it’s combined with the other components and metals like Indium, the melting point falls to -19C. This is why the compound remains a liquid at room temperature. There’s little to no evaporation due to it having a relatively high boiling point of 1300C.

I can't even afford one, and someone just puts a liquid metal in it.
It's been said a lot on this channel that the disc drive was an afterthought and added on after but that seems to fly in the face of common sense and efficient console production, where if you're making two versions of a console you'd want to make them as similar as possible for cost and efficiency. If the only thing different between the two versions is the disc drive, it would be a huge waste to not use the same motherboard and general internal construction, and then just allow the disc drive to be mounted onto the main unit. Just my thoughts.

My understanding is that they can't deny you a repair on a broken warantee sticker, but it's fine to have one so they know if you've been poking around, to better help them diagnose what might have failed, and if you might have broken anything.
Maybe you didnt notice but there were a couple of noticeable framedrops during the sandlevel. Is this by overheating after reapplying the liquid metal or is the Hardware falling short?
