How Hot Does The PlayStation 5 Get?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 27 вер 2024
- Today we are doing a quick test on how the PS5 deals with heat when put in certain situations like being inside an enclosed area or if the intake gets clogged. I also wanted to see what would happen if the PS5 hit its thermal limit in a scenario where the fan failed. These temperatures will vary since we're using thermal probes, but it gives us a good idea as to how the PS5 heats up in certain cases.

Review tech USA tomorrow: THIS youtubers PS5 was overheating! Should you be worried?
And Gamers Meld.
Horses
🤣🤣🤣
The guy produces 5 ps5 videos a day lol
Let's get into it.
Jon gives zero F's, calls out the building manager for not turning the heat on, on the weekend, then admits he's causing fire hazards in the same video.
Okay so now I covered it in gasoline and lit it on fire, and this thing is starting to get pretty toasty.
Apply thermal pads,!!!!
☠
This is also funny
The framerate seems to be dropping...getting VERY choppy now, as the disc slowly liquifies. As you can see, the box and shirt are fully engulfed, and the table itself has caught on fire, slowly working its way towards me. Our temperature readings are still going up here, as we switch back to the overhead camera. The temperature warning has come up, but I'm going to press ok and see how long I can keep playing.
@@iceman00behave nice 👍🏻
When PS5's become attainable again in 2023, I'll be able to feel the heat myself.
🤧
Wait till the scalpers have to file bankruptcy, pick one up in auctions
Ha ha
The heat that pushes out is extremely minimal. At best its lukewarm air. And at no point anywhere on the system is it hot to touch.
@@densetsu4286 So, whether I have the PS5 or not, I won't feel its warmth. 😭
What kind of sorcery is this?
An American using Celsius!
Pretty typical in this context. I almost never see F used for measuring CPU or computing hardware temps.
Hehe even Americans have to bow to the great C when doing thermals on electronics (though I did see one channel using F which was very surprising). I'd say it's because we pretty much all agree that 100 degrees C is about the max that silicon can take, so using F would be a bit confusing.
The readout for most cpu temps is already using Celsius anyway. When it comes to diagnostic tools that read temps. So for the PC enthusiast crowd and people who are used to seeing this kind of content will be familiar with Celsius.
Metric is used in many industries. Guns, scientific measurements, tech etc.
@@Blitterbug Not really, Water boils at 100°C (change from liquid to gas at atmospheric pressure) and most human have boiled water or can imagine how hot 100°C is. Silicon have a simmilar composition to carbon (e.g coal)...we all know how hot coal (barbecue) can get without melting: 1000°C +

Anyone who does this is highly unintelligent.

@@EmilianoGonzalez11n6 the PS4 was a champ at keeping itself alive tho. The turbine was obviously working overtime, but still kinda immortal. I opened up my PS4 a couple weeks ago and half the SOC had no thermal interface material whatsoever covering it and the other half was mostly dry. Redid the whole thing and the reduced fan noise is unbelievable. Gotta give that fan some respect for keeping it alive under these horrific conditions.

Ikr I felt bad for that Ps5 going through this rough test but looks like it held up nicely at high temps.

It's not perspective.
@@_dmfd it's a bit of both. The console is big, but it's not THAT big.
Imo I think it's shouldn't have started when the fan was unplugged
What if there is a fail safe but you didn't reach the temp yet, and those warnings are just giving you time to save your game?
I considered this, but if the system starts thermal throttling it probably should be shutting itself down by then
@@SpawnWave was this a totally stock ps5 cooling solution? If the tim was changed out you really should at the very least mention that, the temps shouldn't be significantly different but it can vary a couple degrees tim to tim.
The ps4 gives a similar notice that lets you "ok" through it. But it will shut itself off if it gets too hot
@@SpawnWave It's hard to believe that the system doesn't have a thermal shutdown when it hits a certain level. If it's not in the OS (unlikely), it would at least be built into the APU. I don't think you got it hot enough.
There was plenty of time to save between the 1st and 3rd warning message. It should at least force shutdown by the second message

Spawn Waves PS5 is crying out for help, let's get into it.
Hope we get a series X video on this soon
My Series X runs decently hot, but my PS5 runs noticeably hotter in comparison. About as hot as my Legion runs without fan-boost on
My series x is at 48 after hours of gaming. Its barely noticeable.
@Mr Glass do you have a link for that?
@Mr Glass I have only seen thermal camera temp check wheres this kind of temp check?
Thermal camera is a bad way to check internal APU/RAM temps,
Do you have a link for Series X Thermal Probe tests? Cause I haven't seen one yet.
Ps5 is better anyway
I'd also recommend watching Gamer Nexus's video on PS5 temperatures, it takes a deep, technical approach. Very good video if you enjoyed this.
Yes,but their test to the ram temperature said 93 and this one 79...
@@XNeohaggenX I'm pretty sure that was the memory.

You didn't use the ps5 stand? I mean it's included for a reason. You should re do the test and see if the airflow from the bottom affects anything

Thermals are good on my unit. Doesn't exceed temps a normal gaming laptop would...
I bought my PS5 last week and it suddenly was loud when I turned it on then it stopped.... And the back of the console felt hot but not burning but wasn't noisy.... Is that normal ?
What did your PS5 do to deserve this endless torture?
Lol, what that office comment for Evan or the building manager?
There are two reasons I can think of as to why the Sony opted to use warning messages instead of shutting down the system.
1) They assume the system will cool itself back down soon.
2) To allow the player to have enough time to save their progress and the player can decide what to do next.
Been waiting a while for this one !
We knew it was only a matter of time when it would
@@DTW-bx2vy GN goes above and beyond with testing. They are simply unmatched.
I think they may have changed something because Tronicsfix had two PS5s shut down after the second overheating warning in a video where he was trying to see if the PS5 could run with the liquid metal replaced with thermal paste. Liquid metal or thermal paste his testing only got them to shut down with the fan was unplugged. He didn't try blocking intake/exhaust.
I do wonder if some of the issues that the PS5 is experiencing is because parts of the interior of the console are reaching temperatures of 90°c +. I can't help but think that the console reaching that temperature over again over a prolonged period is going to cook and damage the system over time. I honestly would not be surprised if there is a mid-gen refresh with a revamped cooling system and perhaps some additional fans to allow for a much better air flow.
i have a gaming laptop that reaches 80c maximum and when im playing miles morales and ps5 its getting me paranoid the air around it its so hot. time to get a fan accesory
Apparently its normal. The bottom(base) generates the most heat due to the power supply and only one exhaust fan and small little ports for the heat to emit from the console.
you predicted the future
The higher the temp goes, the more anxious I get.
Just like a computer struggling to shutdown a program and me using Ctrl+Alt+Del as a emergency surgical move.
The thermal pad was compromised upon doing the teardown.
Also the ram chips are well within range for performance. In fact they have optimal performance at 85 degrees according to the manufacturer.
I read that 105 Celsius is the top temperature supported by the gddr6 ram I think
And the optimal performance is 0 - 95+ Celsius
I'm feelin hot, hot, hot
If only these tests were done in Australian summer. We have over 40°C temps constantly & not everyone has air conditioning. If the same tests were done in a 35-40°C ambient temp, you'd get much higher results.
PSA: kids, don't try this at home. Ever!
PS5: *exists*
UA-camrs: Yeah let’s break this
Everyone's been stating that when you have it vertical you still need to use the stand it came with so the bottom isn't flush with whatever it's sitting on
Hes endurance testing it, hes doing all this on purpose to force an overheat to see how the Ps5 holds up.
Stand does help airflow
Just keep in mind places like the UK dont normally have air conditions in their home so in the summer its gets real hot, you look pretty cool there Spawn Wave, you should of done tests in different temperature levels
I wouldnt worry about heat on the ps5 mines doesnt seem to get hot at all and it stays on all day just like my first gen ps4 which still works but i do take both systems apart from time to time to vacuum out dust and clean but other than that works great
Don't know why this was recommended but so far so good after a year of playing.
Let's be honest here, we all know there will be people saying "sOnY dId a BaD jOb WiTh CoOlInG" after they see a PlayStation 5 get hot after being covered with a shirt.
Funny enough, the only time I've heard the fan on the PS5 was during the Last Of Us Part 2. I've been playing Spider-Man Remastered for the last few days and haven't heard it once. My Series X hasn't made a sound no matter what game I've played. It's gonna be a fun generation.
After all the talk about the thermals I took both side panels off and laid it on its side with a space below it for the fan
So, 82 Celsius while playing atros isn’t bad at all right?? 105 Celsius is the chip’s limit I think
I believe you are supposed to put the PS5 on the stand even in vertical orientation.
I have had no overheating so far on my PS5. Vertical orientation with stand, on top of entertainment center next to the tv (not inside a compartment slot with less air flow in the tv stand). Played Astros and Ghost of Tsushima. No overheating yet, whisper quiet. 2 Weeks so far.
Nice video
Interesting, I thought only phones have airplane mode.
It lasted hella long with no fan, and it's kept itself in check, maybe we haven't reach the limit yet for it to shut off
But that the beauty of variable clocks, can throttle to reduce heat, console that can't do that will shut off immediately
Your memory is running much cooler than Gamers Nexus tho.
They found it was only one RAM module that got hotter than the rest and that was the one that got close to 100*c.
@@TheMonkeyBloke spawn wave tested the same exact module here.
@@ameerikbal8160 Oh ok. I didn't realise. There seems to be a good margin of error, due to how the probes need to be applied.
@@TheMonkeyBloke Getting a good reading via a thermocouple is a pain in the ass sometimes. Takes some time to find the right spot and to secure it properly without skewing the test results.
I see the way they make the fan air flow internally and in a way the air pass through the heat sink but the power box is on the pathway of the hot air flow. I think some exhaust vents need to be added by both side of the plastic case after hot air pass thru the heat sink then straight down/out.

Why is it weird that Astro's Playroom makes the PS5 run hotter than Demon's Soul?
I wonder how the console is going to hold on summer
My guess is not to well unless you got the ac working alongside it running.
Good point. If it's not in a tempature controlled room I can see it getting toasted especially on 90 degree days. Proper ventilation wouldn't matter too much in that regard.

Great video, but the TIM on memory is a cured material. Not sure if your take on it being cheap really applies.
This is a very interesting video. I would also like to see if lying the system on its side (with the stand of course as Sony intended it) or keeping it upright has an effect on how hot it gets. I’ve not put this thing in my entertainment stand as I figured it would get hot. It surely pushes out a lot of air. It is quite, but I had to push it a ways from the wall as I could tell it was getting the wall hot. It’s a hard system to plan where it will be in your entertainment center. It is huge and stand out.
I'm amazed that it even turns on with the fan unplugged, most computers will immediately let you know the CPU fan isn't plugged in and won't boot into the OS........
Respect for using commercial grade instruments and not harbor freight
Except many tools from harbor freight are just as accurate or durable or mechanically superior to those expensive name brands
@@InTheZone85 It depends on the tool or instruments plus the individual user. Watch Project Farm or AvE putting harbor freight tools through its paces and it will dunk on your thesis. The only tool I can think that gets universal praise is the Earthquake tools.
Hi there. I am thinking of 2 simple solutions for better cooling...do correct me if I am wrong...open to all critics. 1. Side panels with multiple holes on the entire plates and mesh protection behind them for dust.
2. Small aluminium heatsinks attached with thermal paste on each ram module.
Hopefully you are seeing this or anyone who is technical enough to provide an answer if my ideas would provide a positive or negative impact on the temperatures. Thank you.
Major respect for using grade celcius!! Cuz I don't understand Fahrenheit!!!
Between 160-190 Fahrenheit 🇺🇸
@Arigato Gyro All silicon chip readings are done in Celcius everywhere in the world. I work with imperial units in my line of work on a daily basis but when it comes to computers it's always Celcius. It's an industry standard.
Hardware tech reviewers use celsius almost exclusively.
Gamers Nexus bottom ram is 14•C hotter than yours, it can’t be explained by a margin error. Different hardware/thermal pads/probe position/memory module/room temperature/game condition ?
I prefer yours as they are less concerning 😆
Ikr, I kinda think Gamer Nexus had a defective console maybe?
Cause Spawn had to force his RAM to 90°C
You're dealing with different testing scenarios, different testing environments, and different testing procedures. You can't expect the numbers to match up completely.
What you're looking for with multiple test sources is patterns. Both Gamers Nexus and Spawnwave's testing make it clear that the memory chip(s) on the opposite side of the board gets significantly hotter than the SOC. It's likely that the memory chip will still operate fine over time, but that is a definite weakness in the design especially when you consider how much heatsink is inside the system. It would have been better if they had found a way to better connect those ram modules to the heatsink so they don't get so hot.
@@Ragnorok64 you can't expect it to match up perfectly but thats like 50°F, thats not a margin of realistic error
@A.L dude if one was running at 90c from Sony and another is 75c from Sony ... you have a fucking problem lol. I suspect some of the PS5's with memory and gpu issues were hotter than gamers nexus one.
@@floppydysk Margin of error applies to run to run variance . That wouldn't be a consideration if you're comparing GN's numbers to SW's numbers. That would com into play when comparing GN's numbers to GN's, and SW's number to SW's numbers in the same set of tests.
So you're telling me this guy has a ps5 and is trying to fry and brick it and I still can't even seem to get one...
In my country the PS5 at retail cost $600 and the Series X at $750 better to just wait when they fixed the problems and the cost lower than release price
What problems? Those are normal temps in the beginning he had to force it to 90°C+
What problems are you talking about exactly?
the ram on 5700xt been between 95 and 106 on load and that is fine
I notice when it’s on my room gets so damn hot
If the system thermal throttles I don't see why it should go as far as shutting down. It should give you a warning like "hey, your ps5 is up in flames, you might see reduced performance" but not actually need to shut down since throttling would keep the system from actually getting to a point where it could get damaged. It's the same thing on PC, specially in laptops. Laptops can run at 99ish degrees for hours and not actually get damaged because the system is dynamically slowing down to prevent the temperature from surpassing whatever the t junction is. Temps are far less of a problem than they used to be in the past. High temperatures on hardware are more spooky than they are actually dangerous.
ps5 has a problem in the design that the memory is not geting cooled properly they will probably revise it in a later model thats when i will buy one.
It's only problem with standard edition not digital edition though
I dont think thats a problem in the design its meant to be like that

Issue will be overheating over time. Especially with a dusty/dirtyenvironments, buildup or even the LM drying out, weather in 3 months, 6, 9 or a year or 18 months (plz clean or check more frequently than that lol.) Cleaning will def be more of discussion with these consoles than in the past which is a good thing because many NGCs have died (recently or years ago etc) or seemed to and been thrown out when they could have been repaired or prevented death by dirt over time. Same with Xboxes, Sega DC and SS, Wiis and more. Batteries, PSUs and capacitors obv hurt the older ones but still, dirt and heat have more of an effect on modern consoles/PCs, and run naturally hotter even in optimal conditions.
