  • The 2021 BMW 5 Series Touring is one of the most complete cars on sale. But can Jaguar's refreshed XF Sportbrake match it for appeal? In this CarGurus UK review, Rebecca Jackson pits a BMW 520d M Sport Touring against the XF D200 R Dynamic S Sportbrake in order to find out, and in doing so proves how good diesel estate cars can be in a market that's becoming flooded with plug-in hybrid SUVs.
    This review covers the two cars' practical credentials, as well as looking at performance, handling, ride comfort, efficiency and interior quality. Do you have a favourite?

      I went to the Goodwood Festival of Speed last weekend and headed to the Jaguar stand. Sad to see the latest XF sportbrake, its a mild hybrid, put on the back row like the "Bargain Basement" clearance vehicles as most car dealers seem to do. All the prime front row places taken up by the various SUV Jags and the F type. Also sad to see, the XF was like "Billy no mates" but the SUV's swamped with punters. When will the SUUV craze end as our car parks just aren't big enough for their increasing bulk ?

    It's a shame that Jags are often looked over for their German counterparts, they really do feel so good to drive and hug the UK roads so well. I think I am in the minority as I don't find the Idrive system them intuitive or that good really in the BMW's I have driven, maybe it's the specs that the owners have chose or maybe I am just missing something. I do however know I was very very surprised when I first drove a Jag Xe and XF last year at how well the handle and how dynamic yet comfortable they feel. Interior was impressive too. Close call I guess it's personal preference for me it's narrowly the Jag.

    • @rayaanshaikh5830

      Most of the time they aren't overlooked. Its the reliability thats still a massive problem with Jags. BMWs may not be the same as a Lexus but they dont have issues consistently in the way that Jags do. I had a Jag XE-S and it was initially fine until the issues started a few months in. And they simply would not stop. Pretty big things like Headlights going pop £1300 worth and rear diff leaks £700 to change a seal. Its just one thing after another with them.

    Hooray, the Jag has an analogue speedo that shows the most common UK speed limits (other manufacturers please note). However , I prefer digital speedometers these days which don't show you unrealistic maximum speeds . Why do they do that?
    As for BMW's IDrive , we have a new I series and I don't find it that intuitive to use, sometimes having to search through many menus to try and find a particular setting that I want to change. If anyone could tell me how the speed warning setting or the speed limiter that adjusts to the speed limit works, I would be grateful as the handbook is far from clear. Perhaps we don't have the latter feature, but the handbook isn't clear on what features we should have on our model either.
    Ok that's enough , I think I'll take the Jag but my preference would be for the model they don't make, an XE estate .

      No massive surprise that British reviewers always favour German cars.
      Comparing them to Jags they go on and on about interior quality being the most important thing until they compare one to a Lexus (i.e. with a better quality interior) then it’s only driver appeal which matters. My guess, purely a guess, is that the outfit they are reviewing for takes a lot more advertising revenue from VAG etc than it does from the likes of Jaguar and Lexus.
      I had a quick look at used values on Autotrader and this didn’t really support her view that you get all that 6k back when you sell. It would be interesting to learn how the Jag’s price compared to a similar 3 series estate at the time, perhaps that would have been a better comparison for this review considering the price difference.

Yes, make mine a Jag! I own two Jags and two American Akitas and the only car that you will come to love as much as a gorgeous stud show dog with a war dog personality is a Jag. Most people, however, really are not possessed of sufficient individuality and courage to stray far from the herd mentality norm and they ultimately want to blend in and follow the herd, as for the self-confident and adventurous soul who is her or his own Type A personality commando (SAS) type, it is the Jaguar everyday of the week for the dynamic handling and for its smart presentation and athletic prowess.

    Jag looks the best but the 5 series has always been the most perfect all rounder and sadly with Jaguar's current build quality and reliability concerns I wouldn't pick one saying that BMW aren't exactly reliable either my wife has them as company cars the worst one she had was a 1 series £9k of warranty work in the first 2 years awful car small cramped and uncomfortable even though it was top spec, glad she went back to a 5 series again after that thing.

    I would never buy any 2 litre diesel car, far to agricultural. I have a Jaguar V6 3.0d S portfolio sport brake (271bhp) and a Porsche Panamera V6 3.0 D, (300bhp), both wonderful refined cars with very few problems, although they are very different to drive. The Jag returns avg 38-40 mpg and the Porsche returns avg 40-44 mpg. So why bother with a clattery old unrefined 4cyl diesel power unit

    • @zsb707
      @zsb707 2 роки тому

      If a 4-cylinder diesel car is labelled agricultural, what do you call the same car with a 6-cylinder diesel engine? A logical answer: agricultural. So the reason for the OG comment is actually 6-cylinder diesel > 4-cylinder diesel.

    What's Jag's reliability like these days? I remember when you had to buy 2, one for parts. I do miss v8s and v12s in luxury cars, though. They were so smooth. They didn't need to be fast. Luxury cars in general are pretty stiff now. The true luxury car is a dying breed. Everyone wants to "feel the road." Until they need to see the chiropractor.

    I have a 2020/70 plate E Class Estate, so the honest answer having seen both of these is that I made the right choice. Out of the two I’d go for the BMW because of the residuals and better build quality. A nicer place to sit.

      Snap! However, I’m lucky enough to also have a 2002 XJ8 and a ‘97 XK8 to scratch my Jag itch. Id rather have either of those over their modern equivalents anyway and, given the choice for anything other than lugging stuff around, tend to use the one of the cars with a growler on the bonnet. Did a swift 250 mile round trip in the XJ yesterday and it was a joy from start to finish. The jags really have ‘soul’.

      @@gerardbooth40 totally get that. I’ve been stung in the past by a couple of jags - that said they were Fords in disguise rather than “proper” jags. I owned 2 X Types, a saloon and an estate and they both cost me a fortune. I had injector failure in the Saloon and broken speedo and failed engine in the estate. That put me off them as my wallet is still recovering!! I had a 3 series too once and it drank oil like water, weekly topups. I then bought my first e class estate and haven’t looked back. I’m on number 2 now, and so far, so good. I love the peace and tranquility even at motorway speeds in 9th, gear and 60 odd mpg. I went to the north of Scotland and had 1/4 tank left - just over 700 miles. You’ve a great set of cars there to play with!

    BMW is a great package and as an owner find the separate opening tailgate glass a massive help cramming family gear in, no mention of this and pity more manufacturers don’t offer. That said sat in the Jag XF as Goodwood FoS yesterday and the interior is a massive improvement, not everyone loves piano black plastic that scratches easily and the seats reminded me of Saab and Volvo comfort. Jag deserves more success, pity the engine range is now so limited.

    • @Hattonbank
      @Hattonbank 3 роки тому

      The Piano Black is real Tulipwood veneer dyed black throughout before it is pressed onto the formed substrate. It is then buffed smooth before being sprayed with lacquer. It is not plastic.
      It may not be as expensive or as eye catching as traditional veneers like walnut burr or birds eye maple, but many customers prefer a more contemporary finish.
      Some people prefer traditional veneers, some like more contemprary veneers like straight grains and piano black, but they are all real veneers.

    Bmw sorted the executive cruiser market a long time ago... By the 520d and choose 18 inch alloys and X drive and it's a much better car on non-motorway roads..
    Whether it's the car to buy or not these days is a hard one..
    I'd say an 18 month used model could be the best bet but buy carefully...
    Otherwise Toyota and Lexus all the way for long term reliability..
