  • Several years ago we self-built a VW LT-35 camper...
    • My Self-Build Campervan
    • My Self-Built Camper V...
    ...but halfway into the build I got the feeling we should have gone in a different direction. Never-the-less, we traveled about in it for a couple of years, and while it was more than adequate, we realised that if we wanted to get more adventurous we were 'going to need a bigger boat'!
    After lots of research, it was obvious a camper truck was the way to go. Our intention is only for 1st-world rambling, so the Fuso Canter 4x4 seemed an ideal choice as it is a globally serviceable/repairable vehicle. I'm an ex-pat Kiwi and know the Canter 4x4 is popular in Oz and NZ.

    Super.
    You are ahead of us by at least 3-4 months on the build to the starting of the interior finishes.
    COVID has delayed everyone.
    Our box was just called ready to ship to us. We also will have the chassis sand blasted soon along with subframe fabricated. We opted for not having the step deck box. So giving up a little on center of gravity. ;(
    Can’t wait to see how you will be tackling your interior components.
    Cheers..... K&Y

    Great build details, Just bought an FGB71 Doka and currently still has the tipper on. Based in the UK. Would love to have a look at your build and pick your brains, also see your 4 point frame. I am going to need some super sinfles from Aspect Wheels also. Regards Rich

    I hope you continue to keep us posted throughout this build as I am also in process of looking for a Fuso to do same as you . Plus I don’t suppose u would mind sharing the cad files?

      There will be more videos I'm sure, just not regularly. Sorry, the CADs aren't mine to share, they belong to the company who built the subframe.

    Would really love to see how the linkages eliminate the effects of chassis twist and how the pivot point are determined

    Hi, great video, had it on half speed for most of it, just didn't want to miss any thing. Could you give me a rough idea how much weight the sub frame and box are, please. It doesn't have to be exact just roughly. Thank you. Kind regards, Darren.

      The bare box and subframe combined is definitely less than a tonne, but can't remember the weights or split ratio. However, the lockers underneath are attached to the subframe not the chassis, so I've been calling it a full tonne. With my self-imposed reduced GVW of 6000kg, tyre-imposed rear axle load weight of 4600kg, front axle load weight of 2800kg and 1000kg of subframe and bare box, I have 2200kg left on the rear axle for the interior fit-out, water and travelling gear/stuff.

    Mine has a rusted through fuel tank and the price for a new one ££££ I wonder what gauge galvanised steel you used to build the base? 5mm-10mm??

    • @lc10w
      @lc10w  Рік тому

      The subframe (base?) is mostly 5mm mild steel square tube, angle, sheet and gusseting, with a bit of random 4mm, then the whole assembly hot-dip galvanized.

    Been looking into the same vehicle 4x4, great turning radius, world stock, been around etc. I been looking for a refrigerated truck. I don't think I am adventurous enough to ever need frame rotation. Do you think a refrigerated truck body is good for a truck build? Thanks

    • @lc10w
      @lc10w  2 роки тому

      Fridge bodies have been used before, they have ready-made insulation. The Canter 4x4 has stiff suspension to cope with the 3.4t payload allowance, so has a flexy chassis to counter that on uneven terrain. It's amazing how much the chassis twists even in an urban environment. Some sort of dynamic subframe is therefore ideal.

    Thanks for sharing your build journey. May I ask what material/s the box body is made from, and roughly how much did it cost you to fabricate?

    • @lc10w
      @lc10w  Рік тому +1

      The box is composite sandwich - 2mm grp/60mm high density foam sheet/2mm grp. Around the door cutout, it's super high density foam for extra strength as it's a big hole. The edge profiles are 4mm grp and the corners are 4mm aluminium.The cost of the box and subframe will be very different now - material prices have shot up in the last couple of years, and when Atkinson Vos Unimog gave us the quote, it was the first Fuso they had quoted for, and under-quoted. Kudos to them - they honoured the quote, so I'd say they made little profit. If you're UK/Euro-based and looking to have a box made, contact them.

    Hi, I am building an Izusu, in a similair vain to yours and will be using Aspect wheels for some super singles. What do you mean by the Bridgestone cases?

    • @lc10w
      @lc10w  3 роки тому +4

      Tyres that the tread has worn down (they are called cases) then get new tread vulcanised onto them. With my tyres, I got TTS to vulcanise (re-mould) the ZT-Drive mud&snow pattern onto the cases. The only off-road patterned new tyres available in the UK in the size I wanted are Conti LCS which are £600+. The remoulds were £200. Just remember, if you are going to singles and keeping the 17.5"wheel size, the rear axle load rating will drop down to the rating of the tyres.
