This video was great probably my favorite now. Pyramid patrol and rocket coaster looked like fever dreams and it was hilarious to see Erin play a Japanese porn game intended for lonely salarymen
Thank you! :)
I'm offended, but intrigued.
I owned one of these about 10-15 years ago. I remember seeing it at a local electronics shop when I was a kid in the early 90's when it first debuted. It was playing a demo LD showing off some gameplay with snippets of popular movies mixed in (I vividly remember seeing Terminator 2). I always thought it was so cool, but the price was insane! IIRC a Sega Genesis was going for around $150 at the time and the Laseractive was $999 plus $299 for each pack. I was fortunate enough to find one on eBay for around $200 shipped with the Sega pack and a handful of laserdiscs. Fun fact: none of the Sega CD units have copy protection, so any model (including this one) can play burned Sega CD games with no modification. Unfortunately I never owned any of the Mega LD games (they were too expensive and had terrible reviews), but it's neat to see them in action. It's a shame none of the OG LD games from the early 80's made it to the Laseractive (I'm looking at your Dragon's Lair). Anyway, great video. It brought back a lot of memories.
That’s awesome that you remember seeing this in an actual store. Thanks for watching!
It was really refreshing to see something "new" in the retro community that I hadn't heard about or seen a bajillion times before. Great video, Erin!
lol how could someone in the retro community not know about this lol were you born in 2001?
This is too big and expensive. I'll just wait for the Pioneer Laseractive Classic.
Still bigger than a SNES Lol
Jeremy Shartzer Even bigger than the Atari 5200!

GREAT video. In the early 80s my grandad had a Laserdisc player he bought in Hong Kong, one of the original Pioneer models. He was a futuristic grandad. I remember he had Dragon's Lair, and one Easter me and my 3rd grade buddy and my cousin played it and our minds were blown that we were practically controlling a movie. My NES paled in comparison. What's so amazing is that so many people aren't aware that this technology existed as early as the 70s.
That’s awesome!
In the early 90s I remember a Dragon's Lair arcade game that was on laserdisc. It was the biggest quarter-eater I have ever seen and looking back now it's only like a 12 minute game if you can manage to beat it, lol. I would pay good money to see Erin play that if she could find it
I would love to play that version, haha. I played the first bit of the NES game a while back. If interested, here's a link :) ua-cam.com/video/8hH5V-1j88g/v-deo.html
I like to think consoles like the LaserActive, 3DO, and even the Phillips CD-i were just poorly executed experiments in Video Game history. Having watched several of your videos, Erin, your videos are informative and easily make anybody laugh. I appreciate your work!!!
Thank you!
I bought a Pioneer LaserActive back in the day. It was at my local Incredible Universe store for something like $1100 or more for the longest time, but then it was discontinued. I had been considering getting a laserdisc player for a while, and when the floor model of the LaserActive was knocked down to $209 I grabbed it, along with my first laserdisc movie, Clerks (I wanted to hear the commentary and see the extended footage and thankfully cut ending). I also wanted a LaserActive because I had a Pioneer rack stereo system already, and it could play Sega and PC Engine/Turbo games with Paks. So, I grabbed the LaserActive, went over to the section where the games were, and they were gone. They'd sent the games away a week earlier according to an employee, along with all of the Sega and PC Engine paks. I did find Pyramid Patrol somewhere else, but didn't have a game pak to play it with. When Incredible Universe closed down, they found a stray Sega pak in a torn box and marked it down to $5, which I immediately grabbed. Years later I bought Rocket Coaster through mail order, which was the only other game I've ever owned for the system. I used mine mostly as a Sega CD player and movie player. Any time I'd play the Sega CD game Surgical Strike on it, there was a one in three chance the disc would get stuck inside the console and I'd have to fish out the CD with a makeshift hook. Another good thing was that when I bought my LaserActive Sega pak, all the stores were clearancing all their Sega CD games, so I picked up titles like Keio Flying Squadron for $7.50 at Best Buy. Wish I'd have tried getting more RPGs rather than buying Rise of the Dragon for $2.
Noooo!!! PYRAMIDS ARE FOR HUMANS ONLY!!!! MARS HAS NO RIGHT TO HAVE PYRAMIDS!
To quote your video, "JUST THE THOUGHT OF ANOTHER PLANET HAVING A PYRAMID PISSES ME OFF!"
What is it about that ancient culture that gets the best of Dave???
Fuck off Joe. The only reason you are commenting on this is b/c it's a girl making the video. You and your buddy (which ever this is, Joe / Dave) are both sexist pieces of shit. Go back to the PCEFX forums aka 'cesspool world' where you belong you losers.
@@talkingcircles Gee you must be fun at geek parties.
@@xxcrysad3000xx Dave must be reincarnated King Tut to have such resentment.
that dragon is breathing Listerine you know how much that burns your throat, what kind of dragon breaths fire.
Laserdiscs are pre-recorded analog video and often in games are more used for backgrounds where the game console overlays sprites and characters and score displays on top of the video.
The graphics looks pretty incredible for its time, I just hope the Laser Active gets emulated for the purpose of game preservation.
I bought a LaserActive about a decade ago for about $60. It came with the Genesis pack, the LaserActive branded remote control and 6-button Genesis controller. The guy even sent me all the original paperwork that came with it as well as the little pack port cover that goes on the front of the system. He shipped it all in a PC monitor box filled with tissue paper and packing peanuts. A couple of years back, I stumbled across two LaserActive LD games in the wild (Hyperion and Space Berserker) for $5 a pop at a local Half Price Books of all places. Good times!
That’s awesome!
F-Zero references and dropping
F-bombs, awesome.
My next door neighbor had this because his father was a huge movie guy and bought everything Pioneer. He must have been sold the Laseractive as part of a home theater bundle. He had the Sega pack but no Genesis games so he would ask me to bring some over but sadly I never realized it could play Sega CD games. He had maybe 2 or 3 Laserdisc games I was blown away by them at the time.
Awesome that you have one. I bought a Pioneer Laser Disc player in 1994 when I was in college. I was the cool kid.
Thanks for another great video, Erin! I can’t believe so many weird consoles like this existed that I’d never heard about.
At 10:02 , Erin enters stage 1 of RAGE QUIT mode... At 14:28 , Erin enters stage 2 of RAGE QUIT mode..... the rage.... the rage.... LMAO!!
Still better than Soulja Boy's game console 🤓🐙
I got so excited seeing the Laseractive in magazines as a kid. The potential was amazing, as LD was already the sweetest format for films, and I loved playing Mad Dog McCree in the arcades. It was like the Rolls Royce of consoles, as it was so high class, and expensive. Living in the UK we never got to see it, as it was only released in the US and Japan. But to me it was like this almost un-real dream. I scoured mags for any mention of it. Of course, now seeing it, the content def didn't live up to the potential. Such a shame!
If you can Erin, check out the Laseractive game, I Will: The Story Of London, it's a video based detective game. It's not great, but the acting's hilarious. There's also a driving based level around the historic British city of Bath, which is basically Google Street View in 1993, but a lot quicker! One of the mini games also involves you doing washing up in a restaurant to earn money!
I have Mad Dog McCree for DOS, it's actually enjoyable for a while. I never did beat it though.
It's funny that you called Pyramid Patrol the type of game that would appear in a movie, because I swear to Christ this was the game young Stephen played in the flashback scenes in the Haunting of Hill House.
Great video again! Love it when you play strange retro games!
That shit actually don't look too effin bad. I asked Santa for that when I was a kid, but he said, "they ran out of them at the North Pole." Lol!
They actually made a pretty successful movie based on that Britney Spears video. I think it was called The Martian. Matt Damon played Britney.
That’s what I love about collecting laserdiscs, finding obscure movies that make you wonder how people paid $30-50 for a bad movie on laserdisc.
Always love the videos Erin! Thanks
I have one that I picked up at a Estate sale with two official controllers and pyramid patrol (sega pak). I believe I got the whole deal for $50, I was absolutely shocked when I saw how much they go for lol. I secretly want to sell it for the money, but it’s pretty cool having one lol.
I think we all agree that Erin should have a full playthrough of Virtual Cameraman. No? Well, maybe only I agree on that. That game is on par with Plumbers don't wear ties and The Flowers of Robert Mapplethorpe.
I learned something new. What an adventure. Thank you!
Yay, I'm glad! Thanks for watching :)
"Fuck the future"
- Erin, 2018
This system doesn't look half bad for 1993, this might have actually evolved into something good if it was like 1/4 the price.
The only people I can imagine picking up one of those systems back then are the kids who had really rich parents and asked for it, played it once, and never touched it again. Considering it was almost $1000 lmao
A buddy of mine had one when back in the day. Go figure, his step dad was rich (real estate) and spoiled him rotten. 😄
@@DamaramuHQ Hahaha case in point 😂
I want a poster made from the box-art of Rocket Coaster.. Jesus Christ, that's so awesome.
It’s pretty great! 😎
I would so buy the Britney - Oops I Did It Again Game! Either the hotness of playing as latex catsuit wearing Britney herself...or the tragedy of playing as the astronaut, saving a girl who isn't really that into you.
Take my money!

Some shows still use sounds of the Pac-Man 2600 game as generic video game sounds.
Thanks for suffering through those for us Erin. I'm kind of intrigued by that Cameraman game, if it was that weird and creepy to start with how much worse does it get if someone agrees.
Love your work! Been binge watching you all weekend! I'm an old school gamer (Atari 2600 raised me) and I've never seen some of the things you've showed.
Oh wow, thanks so much! I’m glad you’re enjoying my channel :)
Lol that was great, thanks Erin, never even heard of this console before!
"The game's so nice they named it twice :D" You're killing me, haha!
Wow and I thought cassette games were weird . Another classic from Erin 👍👍☺
The LazerDisk if memory serves me right those discs were like the precursor to the CD in the size of an LP. My grandfather had one while we had the beta drive from Sony before vhs ended up as the standard. :)
I love that the video just couldn't keep up with how pink her dress was.
I had a school friend who owned a LaserDisc player in the mid 90s at secondary school...He lived in a massive house and his parents were rich! He also had a 486DX66MHz...I had to make do with my Super Nintendo and 386DX33MHz
That’s crazy you have one of these I would love to have one super collectable and rare console. I’m kicking myself for not buying one I found on Craigslist I neeeever knew these ever existed in back in the day. Cool you have one. I only knew one friend who had a laser disc back in the day but the fact you had to keep turning them over I wasn’t impressed I stuck to my genesis/Snes and vhs lol
They even made a couple of the games on both LD formats 😂
Cool vid.
There was even a Myst prototype LD out there somewhere
When you beat Virtual Cameraman 2 you are treated to a 3D bonus video if you have the 3D goggles.
Oh my gosh. That's amazing.
Don't clump the 3DO with the CD-i. 3DO is there with failed systems like the Jaguar and 32x.
These are like the "video games" played in the end scene of Carousel of Progress at Walt Disney's Magic Kingdom.
Watching Erin Plays while unlocking characters in Smash?! Heck yes.
This is the best laseractive video I've seen. Great job.
Thanks so much! It was really interesting learning about this system :)
Pyramid Patrol gives me a 3D Action 52 vibe, with its flying staplers- as-enemies randomness. All of these games have one thing in common: they're empty. It just looks like you're flying or driving through a bad CG movie. There's no interaction between the player and the environment, which makes it difficult to relate the two in your mind. You're painted on to a barren world and just told "SHOOT STUFF BECAUSE IT'S THERE."
That said, thankyou for showing us! I've certainly never heard of this system before.
It reminds me of early 90s FMV games like Nova Storm and Rebel Assault.
The laser disc [size] looks like the Predator's throwing "boomerang" weapon, but I bet you could cut heads off with the LaserDisc just as well, if thrown hard enough. ;P
Im happy i missed out on that console thank you for braving it
MSX., Atari 520ST and Amiga series of mid 80s computers could also play Laserdisc games, Astron Belt being one and a full conversion of Dragon's Lair 1 + 2 for the Atari ST and Amiga on Laserdisc by Microdeal being another. We appear to have been fascinated with Laserdisc games for a long time lol
The size of the laserdiscs cracks me up every time I see them. It's like a SUPER MEGA CD!!
And turns out they called it the MEGALD lol
Great video . Interesting idea having a modular entertainment system. I imagine having system with all of the 'packs' being a huge clunky mess. And I kinda want to see that
ON Laser Disc That's Hard Core LOL❗️❗️❗️❗️❗️🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄
This came about because back in the early 90s, everyone seemed to think that FMV games were going to be the next big thing. They figured that systems would never be powerful enough to render realistic looking backgrounds, so why not just play a pre-rendered video instead. Of course, computers advanced rapidly to the point where such tricks were no longer needed. And the laserdisc format itself pretty much flopped due to its size, cost and limitations.
As for Virtual Cameraman; I've never played it, but just looking at it it's obvious that it's a dialog tree where you have to give the right answers to move the conversation along and eventually get her to agree to let you take some photos. Probably there's only one option in each list that won't result in an instant "Denied!" result. I also wouldn't be surprised if they varied the conversations somewhat with each girl having two or three different sets of responses to add replay value so that you couldn't just memorize the proper answers after a couple games. I mean for someone who understands Japanese.
The enemies look like space staple removers, which are a bit freaky.
Wow this console is fucking crazy. I would've never even imagined something like this existed. I thought the Phillips CD and the Sega CD were something, but those giant laser discs are some insane shit as far as video game formats go.
I just found your channel and I must say it's pretty awesome. Suscribed.
That Yoshi's Island poster always cheers me up a little.
I'd never heard of that console. But it sure looks good.
These games are pure A E S T H E T I C
*Did You Know...*
The Space Gold is a neon hue of _GREEN._ :)
Man I actually never knew about this system. It seems like this must have flopped back then. Plus I can only imagine how expensive the games were back then. But unless your parents are rich ain't no way your owning this system. I know if I wanted this back then my parents would have laughed at me lol. Great video as always Erin!
My parents bought it, and pretty much every other electronic imaginable, for themselves, didn't have to ask for anything.
Best comment: "Fuck the Future!" LOL
You make the best retro videos I've ever seen :)
Thanks so much!
You're welcome Erin!
Rocket coaster reminds me of the rail shooter coaster on FF7 at gold saucer. Was actually playing this video when me and my sister were at gold saucer and doing the coaster today! 🎢👻🎯🚀🚁🌋🎈
Pyramids in space? Sounds like someone's been watching Stargate.
Those crab things on pyramid patrol remind me of the winged creatures on super metroid, that bounce from the ceiling and ground.
Pyramid patrol looks great.
Pyramid Control could best be described as cut rate fmv After Burner on Mars with an Egyptian theme.
Great content never seen this system thanks.
Hahahaha your face reflected on the laser disc !!!!!
When you mentioned Britney on Mars I immediately thought of that one scene from Total Recall. You know the one.
Even though it's been over 2 years since this video came out, I would love to see a deeper dive into Virtual Cameraman in another video.
Pyramid Patrol reminds me of Galaxian 3 and Starblade in a sense. I’m happy to say I have played both of those in arcade form.
Fantasy world! omg! Subbed
I’m 9:00 into this and I’ve been laughing my ass off the entire time
Great job !!!!
damn I actually remember playing on this system as a kid in the Navy exchange... and then my disappointment when my parents opted for a low model Pioneer LD player, strictly for karaoke of course.
Awesome!!
at least nobody in Pyramid Patrol says: Where did you learn to fly?
I have Sega's "Virtua Fighter Special" on LD-ROM.
It came by chance in a lot of laserdisc movies as I own a laserdisc player but not the LaserActive system.
That level when you're small and inside a house really reminded me of Katamari Damacy. Please Erin! Play that series~
That’s funny you brought up Katamari cuz I’ve actually been wanting to play that lately
Hyperion gameplay looks like something you'd find printed on the front of a Trapper Keeper.
I was watching some old "Siskel & Ebert" videos and they actually advertised this in the episode (Circa 1993).
Oh my gosh, my high school science teacher in the late 2000s had a laser-disc player e utilized for in-class videos!!
Yikes. Vapor wave. Is that what kids today say? Dang whipper-snappers.
Hehehe...Attack of the wicked Space Staples! That would make a nice B-Movie title :-) Another nice video :-)
LaserActive reminds me of the CDI and 3DO except those systems had some great games. And yah it's heavy, with those modules. I wasn't impressed by this system and I don't think I'll ever own one. Erin you had de-sold me on getting one, thanks for the great review as always, now I spend money on something with it.
Good review by a very pretty lady. Remember laserdisc games back in the 80s. Dragon lair was the biggest game and space ace. Remember lots and lots of people around these machines in 1984 putting their 50p in. Good days.
This was a thing? Why did no one tell me! I love weird obscure things like this! I wish I was around when laserdiscs hit their hay-day (I was born 1997). I know that laser discs didn’t officially discontinue until ‘09 but, we never adopted them and so I never had any experience with them.
I have to admit, those graphics are pretty damn good. When you consider the time it was made. It's not too bad.
12:50 best face ever
the underground society needed good up-to-date games and consoles
I feel like Pyramid Patrol is where Universal Studios stole the idea for the Revenge of the Mummy ride from.
the camera game had a sequel. btw, love rubbeface..
I know! I would love to see the sequel XD Thanks for watching!
Anyone else going to Oaks, Pa tomorrow for Too Many Games?
See ya there :)
Great video! I often wondered what the Pioneer was all about, they certainly went all in with great expectations. All the games are 'on rails' and video quality worse than VHS what were they thinking?
