Orchid Species Vs. Hybrids - Differences, the good & the bad!

  • Today we talk about orchid species and hybrids, compare them, explain what they are and better understand the role of both of them!
    🦋 More info below! 🦋
Orchid species, also called botanical species, are those orchids which you can also find in nature as you see them in cultivation. This does not mean they are obtained from the wild, this happened a long time ago. They are all propagated by humans in cultivation.
Hybrids are crosses of species between them, with other hybrids and even with other compatible genera. They don't normally occur in nature, since most species crossed together are not even found in the same geographical location.
Species are usually more genetically stable, if we disregard the lack of 'natural selection' from cultivators. They are perfectly adapted to the locations they grow in naturally. Some species might have features we don't like, such as odor, or difficult growth habit.
Hybrids are more unstable and can surprise us with their appearance and behavior. Since they don't have a natural location, they are usually not really well adapted to any geographical location. Some orchids can come close and can do well in certain areas, but these instances are rather rare. Many hybrids have lost some features, such as fragrance, which can be a good thing, or a bad thing.
Both species and hybrids are actually wonderful and put a smile on people's faces everywhere. No need to put one down to elevate the other, it makes 0 difference ;)

Danny... I think the time is near to consider penning a book. A good publishing company can do wonders by compiling all your past videos into one very accurate and informative (illustrated) book or series of books. Everything is on your side; it is not as though you are an unknown, you are well-known worldwide and highly respected. Of any person's name in the world of orchids, yours is heard loud and clearly... Thanks for all you do for our community.

I prefer species but solely from a growing point. Species tend to require really specific conditions and for me, I like the challenge of getting those conditions right.

    Hello,
Last Monday, I bought myself a Vanilla orchid in the flower shop and because of this I'm very interested in this orchid now. I potted it in Cocohum (at least we call it this way in Germany) mixed with bark an big pieces of Seramis and it's doing fantastic so far with many new aerial roots (maybe because I spray it daily). I'm very interested in the progress of your Vanilla, so will be there an update soon?
    Greetings
    Leonard

Good morning, great video very informative. I have a question concerning watering. I have self watering pots, in the reservior there is a solution that has my general feed, when I want to add cal mag to the resevoir do I have to empty it or do i just add it to the pot which still have some fertilizer in it? Im not sure of what to do. Thanks again Have a great day.

Hi, there are very few known natural hybrids, I could count them on my hands I believe :) hybrids don't usually thrive in nature probably due to how inadequate they may be. They do look great to us, but out there they may be misfits and just wither off if they happen. That's just my guess as to why there aren't that many natural hybrids 🤷🏻‍♀
