I've been getting quite a nice selection of these types of orchids from Normans in California. Love them, and would love to know more about the care. I do know not to cut the spikes!! And yes, they all come in moss and I was told not to repot into bark!
Rest in peace phal mariae, I got it for 27 dollars as a seedling in 2019. It was one of my first orchids. Didn’t realize I wouldn’t be able to find one again :(
I find it very interesting and a great example of color theory being different than we got taught in school with the red that red is not a primary color but rather a secondary one because it’s mixed of magenta and yellow
The colour theory we got taught in school refers to pigments and is still accurate if you are mixing paints. The colour theory working with the colour we see from the orchid flowers refers to light and is accurate when working with colour film ( not that many people use film negatives anymore) and how we see light. Fun stuff.
Phalenopsis charmer is a complex hybrid with burgundy/red spots on a yellow background and the red doesn't fade away with time. I really like it :) Thanks for the lovely video!
I absolutely love these phals! I only have one and it hasn’t bloomed yet. It’s Phal. Joy Spring Canary x Phal. Mituo Bellina Red Apple. I have no idea what the blooms will look like but the parents are fabulous! Out of all my different orchids, these are in my top 3. Loved your video . Now I’ll have to find the unboxing since this is an older vid.
Yes, I love novelty phals. Peter Lin was actually who I got my first orchid from. Two of my favorites are Phal Princess Kaiulani 'Chin Yo' and Phal Dragon Tree Eagle. They have a similar look, neon pink with yellow tips. 😍💖💛
Phal Chingruey's Goldstaff and Phal Chiada Francis are actually both "novelty phals", with polychilos ancestry. I love the "novelty" phalaenopsis; when I first got into orchids I thought I only liked large blooms, but the "novelty" phals have won me over, especially the ones hybridized with formerly-DTPS orchids. I love the long-lasting flowers, fragrance, and waxyness.
Chiada is not a novelty since the flowers are not thick and colours fade ;) as I was saying in the video, ancestry can contain both subgenera, but the end result is what matters. The distinction has flaws, Chiada is an easy case since it looks and behaves like a standard, blooms in winter to spring etc.. but what about Liodoro? That's the pickle ;)
I'm slowly adding to my collection of novelty phals. The problem I have is that I buy them as seedlings and have to wait for them to grow! I might get some blooms in the next year if I can keep them alive through the summer. I look forward to your upcoming unboxing and update videos.
5:20 That stunning vivid orange. I wish to find one like that. Up to now the orange Phals I saw are all dull. And oh my god ; the smell of many novelty Phal hybrids. Sweet, fruity, how could I not have one for so long? Also blooms continuously, as long as light is sufficient.
Not 100% sure, but based on what you said and my research, check out the phal masterpiece (table masterpiece). I think it could be a novelty. It's a hybrid obtained from a hybrid and amboinensis. I've recently purchased one and the unopened buds fell because of all the changes and transports it went through. Anyway, it has 8 spikes, the flowers are small, waxy, a bit fragrant, leaves are shiny, it's a summer bloomer. I love it!
Phal. Mannosa ( mannii x venosa ) is a great primary fragrant hybrid . I ordered phal bell ringer ( corningiana x (bellina x tetraspis ) ) that is said to b a fragrant novelty phal so we’ll see in a few days
Dear Danny, I really love yellow orchids. I have Phal regular hybrid yellow with purple center. Very common. And as you said in your video the color is fading away after couple of weeks. I had no idea that that gonna be a thing. Would you please recommend any other types of orchid with bright yellow color that won’t fade away? Thank you in advance!
I love phalaenopsies novelties !! That’s what I mainly collect! I bought a lot from Peter Lin, I have the pleasure to meet him and his greenhouse. And yes they love sphagnum moss, I never had a problem with it. You should do more video about this topic. Love you videos :-)
Hi, I just got into the novelty phal and saw your video from 2 years ago. I have 2 questions: (1) Do they need to have temp drop in the evening to induce bloom as the regular phals? (2) what have you concluded the preferred medium, S. moss or S/H ? Thank you for your time., Your videos are awesome, so helpful and resourceful.
I have a standard phal Diamond beauty that is pure unfading pretty red ! Plus i detect a fragrance in it too . Please do check it out too. PS : I have crossed my Rhynchostylis retusa with a Papilonanthe teres an voila a seedpod is forming . I am gonna try flasking it .
Hi, that orchid has a lot of Polychilos heritage, look at her ancestors bluenanta.com/natural/100131467/hybrid_detail/ so it's no wonder :p it's not a real standard, but not a novelty either since it is an old hybrid. I think they need a better term other than novelty :p
Good information on novelty phals, thanks for sharing. I did order from the Duch nursery and they have very beautiful hybrids , how ever when my orchids arrived, they were smaller than I expected. Hope yours are what you hoped for.
Hi! I'm not sure if you will see this message since you posted this video 5 years ago, but I figured I will still try. I have one novelty Phalenopsis that I purchase 3 years ago. It had a single bloom on it when it arrived, and it fell off a few days later. I thought it might have had something to do with the shock from being shipped. However, when it bloomed for me this year, I would say the blossom lasted about a week. Is that a trait of the novelty Phalenopsis, that their blooms don't last that long?
I don't know if you still have that phal but the 2:31 phal i have her too and her tag says pirate picotee. i don't think you already know her tag but i'm happy to help.
Hi Danny. Oh gosh, 900 Euros. Think they’ll send to the USA? Can hardly wait for your unboxing 🙃. Glad to see you’re using moss too. Convert to bark spag mix next during active growth and Leca afterwards ? Transitioning slowly so not to loss roots and maintaining active growth.
Thoughts on finleyi (minus) hybrids? They're my newest obsession, with my favorite being Phal. Donna's Delight, and a new hybrid seems to appear every day :) I have Phalaenopsis Java Mini (javanica x finleyi), which is the smallest phalaenopsis I've ever seen
Gardening with- Oishanu hey do you have any phragmipidium in your collection,??it's like dream to have one in INDIA,not any online nurseries sell phrags...
d v . Ola mate ! In india the only place i know which sells paphs and phrags is in Meghlaya,India called meghalaya orchids . They sell them online . PS a bonus is that i live in Assam which is soo near to their place that i can go there 😉😉. You can also try 'Wayside garden and nursery' from Sikkim . BTW i am from India too😀😀!! Where are you from ?
Gardening with- Oishanu hey I have checked wayside, they have nice collection of cymbidiums, but not a single phrags, can u pls give link of Meghalaya Orchids???
I was wondering if the true red spots of that hybrid ( Diamond Beauty ) stayed red as the flower aged. Maby it depends on which cultivar of the cross you have, because I saw pictures of it with faded, purple-ish spots on a dull yellow background.
Dani, I don't have a lot of phals because I haven't quite figured out yet how I need to care for them in south FL USA. I do grow many dendrobiums and cattleyas. I've learned what they like in my environment. I do have a question. I have a large chisis that did bloom this year. It is growing in sphagnum, but I want to switch it to a small fir bark, charcoal, sphagnum and perlite mix or mount it. Do you have any advice? Always enjoy your videos. Thanks for sharing your expertise.
Dante, I honestly think the phals don't like the summer tempsoutdoors here. (I'm in Broward County.) Indoors in the air conditioning I believe that they do fine. I'm trying a few mounted outdoors, but am seriously considering putting them back in pots with leca on my north facing window (we have a large roof overhang so they only get indirect light.) I have a neighbor who persists in growing them outdoors, but they look horrendous at the end of the summer and frequently get thrown away afterwards. If you can, I would bring them indoors and see how they do in the a/c. The more I think about it the more I am probably going to bring them back indoors and remove them from mounts and repot in clay pots with leca. Even though I have been watering the mounted phals daily they are starting to show signs of stress (dehydration of the leaves is starting). Sounds like a good Saturday chore. I would like to be successful with the few phals that I have. Thanks for your comment.
Hi! I think you might be able to help...i have 2 phalaenopsis orchids one I think i was able to save..root rot over watering but other one is losing flowers..i see new buds and roots look nice and green...i fed them both...is it normal for flowers to fall quick?
Very interesting :) so apparently I have 3 novelty phals I did not know about haha :) only one has bloomed for me yet, the violecia the other two are bright coloured hybrids can't wait to se them in bloom. To be honest though I much rather smell a sharry baby than the violecia, although it is fragrant I find it's fragrance like a old type of perfume like 😂 whereas the sharry baby ...mmm yummy :)
i bought 2 times there already. not the best packaging but they have nice quality phals and nice customer service . Still collecting for my next haul again there ^^
Wei Hsiang Lin yess, they do confirmation by email.after your status is shipped, you will get track and trace from the expedition they used. Did you check your spam box?

@@leahnichol6665yeah I know I love it that it has more layers to it 😄
I have a Miva Smartissimo, Sogo Gotris (both self-ID'ed), a yellow mini, and a white mini. My white mini smells like roses!
Phalenopsis charmer is a complex hybrid with burgundy/red spots on a yellow background and the red doesn't fade away with time. I really like it :)
Thanks for the lovely video!
I know her she is lovely :) but the reds are not vivid, more like burgundy. The hybridizers were reffering to tetraspis reds :)
I bought a Phal. KV Charmer.
The burgundy, almost red spots are so pretty. Hoping to find a true red one though. Hoping it reblooms soon.

My Amboinesis smells kinda like a mix of nail polish and bug spray but she is beautiful
Very interesting comparison, thanks!
Yay Phalaenopsis! ❤️
