This was sooo very informative! I love orchids and have been now keeping them long enough that I had been thinking about trying to create a hybrid, this video helped so much!

I am glad that you enjoyed my video. Imagining how the hybrid will look is fun too - good luck with that if you decide to move forward!

You have inspired me to make some miniature orchid crosses, the information that you have provide is invaluable. Out of five pollenated flowers I have had 4 successful pods. However, recently I have have some difficulties with my stored pollinia drying out, is there any way to rehydrate it?

Congrats on your success rate - this is really good! For the drying of pollinia, you may be OK with using them dry. I think that it is better to use them in the present state (dry) than trying to rehydrate them. I store my pollinia in small tubes but I imagine that they dry out, even in those tubes. I have heard stories of people using pollinia taken from dry, dead flowers that they found on the floor of their greenhouse growing area, 6 months or more after the flowers fell off the plants. But, I do not recommend doing this. Give them a try and let me know if it works.....

Enjoyed you lecture last week in Naples and was inspired to try pollinating some phalaenopsis. If I use a new flower on a stem will it affect the buds that have not bloomed yet or should I wait for all buds to bloom?

It should not affect the other flowers on the plant, if you decide to pollinate a few of the first flowers. If you pollinate a LOT of flowers on a spike, there may be an effect on the later flowers. I am glad that you enjoyed my talk.

I love your pollinia storage system. Let me tell you this for fun. My very first cross which is still in process I used a dried up flower that had to be atleast 7 - 8 months old. It was dried up and in a corner. Than I realized it was Den.Burana sunshine and had a nice unamed kingianum in bloom. I liked the size of the kingianum and the burana sunshine has biggibum and antelope ancestors. Making this a very complex hybrid of Thelychiton-Biggibum-Antelope.
I hope to remake this cross with a named awarded kingianum. I will also have to find a new burana sunshine as all that remains is a cane that is struggling to make a keikis years from ever blooming again. The only buran sunshines i can find are a mutated rose variety and the next after that a full flask with minimum purchase price for import. Burana Sunshine has yet to be awarded(or I havent found any info on it) so a flask of them can be valuable too.
Luckily the seed if this hybrid has high germination so maybe I will find the golden egg in the bunch and clone it/ self it with the same vigor. Im in the market for quality plants of both parents now and forever.

I have heard stories about using pollinia from old flowers that had fallen off the plant and were on the ground but did not know that you could use flowers, that were7-8 months old and dry! Were the pollinia still yellow or had they turned brown? I think that I need to investigate this more now. Thanks for sharing your story. 🙂

@@plantpropagator the pollinia went to an orange color when i used it. The thingbis they do dry out. Sometimes that sticky pad is still connected and still sticky.
In older flowers things can be brittle. The pollinia will break however if you get it into a column it will have the same chances as fresh.

My attention span won't last five to six years. I'll just hope to be able to buy them. 🤣

Thanks for your comment - most folks are like you and want to see the beautiful, fragrant flowers right away. I am probably too thrifty and want to spend less money, and try to nurture the plants to flowering over time.
