I think Decon is one of the best characters in the last 10 years. He is very human but definitely represents a certain mix of characters that most people don't understand and the writing team brought those to life extremely well. For example his vet side is not gonna sit well with people in the same way "Generation kill" or "Jarhead" doesn't really sit well with most normal people or those who haven't spent a lot of time around veterans. Its not even just Decon the whole cast aside from the antagonists are generally well written and have both text and subtext you might need a couple of playtroughs to pick up on fully. Not to mention how he changes over the story (tho i will admit the game should have had a longer third act , it way very rushed) is tangible but still subtle. Its also one of the few times where character talking to himself isn't grating or annoying in part due to the great vocal performance and having variations on the same line governed by invisible stress level. He is definitely underrated on the same level Halo infinite's portrayal of the master chief is, there they for the first time since the original game pushed character development and humanized a character who really only got some small levels of development in secondary spinoff sources and was mostly fully static in the games themselves.

To play devil's advocate, by all accounts this game should be shit. The game has 3 factors working against it heavily when it comes to review scores; Setting, gameplay, and timing. In terms of it's setting and gameplay, we've seen open world zombie games before... in fact the genre has almost become a shorthand for "lazy cashgrab" with games attempting to dabble up the scraps of DayZ and Rust long ago becoming a dime a dozen. And the game couldn't have come at a worse time, right off the heels of The Last Of Us 2 and Red Dead Redemption 2, everyone was feeling major burnout for not only zombie games but also open world games in general... And this game is both at once. On a surface level this game feels... repetitive, derivative, maybe even lazy, but I suspect like many games that were labeled as such back in the day; Mafia 1+2, the Brothers in Arms trilogy, hell, even the original Red Dead Redemption and Halo Reach(to a lesser extent); this one will end up aging like a fine wine and will be remembered fondly by the nostalgia of time. To be clear... I haven't played it, this is my first exposure to Days Gone since I saw the first couple trailers(and I myself wrote the game off as yet another DayZ clone "with a spin"), but assuming I'm not missing some massive plot holes or shitty story beats not covered in this video, it looks like a really solid singleplayer narrative - a type of game we are sorely lacking in the 2020s. Days Gone is such an amazing game. The story is heartbreaking and redeeming at the same time. Deacon St.John is one of the best characters in modern games. He's got more depth and emotion than most characters in gaming. The reviews from garbage places like IGN and game informer real did this game in before it was even given a chance. They focused on certain parts of the gameplay and the fact the lead character was a masculine White male is I think why these trash gaming outlets doomed the game before it had a chance to carve out a bigger audience. I think so many gamers that never gave it a chance would love it. I know I do and I was one of the few that wanted to play this game from the day it came out in 2019 but I didn't have a PS4 or the money to get one so it took until last year for me to finally play this game. It was the first game I bought once I got a PS5. I can relate to Deacon in many ways other people cannot because I am.an Army Veteran, I grow up around the MC life even tho I never joined. I lost a gf that I still love to this day. Deacon is a person tormented by his actions in the past, scared to lose the small pieces he has of his wife if he moves forward and moves on. I love this game.
I agree 100%. I played it in 2021 and it was instantly one of my favorite games. Its so epic, it reminds me of the old days when games were good, like the Uncharted games or the early Assassins Creed games. The story, the music, everything so good.
An can’t forget bout his code of honor not killing any females that right there really stand out to me where he spare that one female an how he really was holding on to his humanity an visiting the place his wife die
I realized halfway through the video when he made an angry face and I was like "oh shit that's Sam Witwer!" and then I immediately felt immense shame for being fooled by a fuckin beard for like 25 minutes. I'm a Star Wars nerd, I should've recognized the patron saint as soon as he appeared on screen.
That mountain pass will always stick with me. What a memorable moment. Filled with hope, filled with longing but equally unsure, scared and plunging into the dark unknown, all alone. Loved it.
Its almost criminal that this story wont continue at the very least in the way it was ment to. Best game ive ever played and the only reason i still own my ps4 gotta replay it every so often
It's an okay game, it had so much potential but there's nothing left to do after beating the game. Too few sidequest, more hordes could've been awesome, more weapon or even outfits If there's a days gone 2, maybe they'll work on all that
Ngl. I was surprized seeing this video and having it remind me of how actually great and also what a hidden gem Days Gone is...though,wished we got a Sequel, because Days Gone DESERVES a Sequel😔
Great to see this game being talked about. it got a bad wrap and is underappreciated for it. So much more than just 'another zombie game'. His friendship with Boomer is still something I look back fondly on.
I’m happy to see this and honestly you present it so well and put it in chronological order to show more. Here’s hoping one day we get a sequel for it. 🎉🎉
I honestly found it more enjoyable than RDR2. Before anyone says some of the “corny dialogue”, I agree but I’m convinced it was deliberate to give it a more realistic edge.
RDR2 is full of corny dialogue, itself...so, anyone says that is full of it😂 I didn't care for the Days Gone story, at all, but, the game is a blast to play
I agree with both of you. Loved Days Gone because of the dialogue, lol. Mainly because it felt more genuine as Deacon and the cast are often so sarcastic, those moments of corniness just hit better because of it for me. My biggest complaint is that the game took so long to put you into horde fighting (although you CAN fight hordes early on) because the game was advertised so heavily around it. I remember wondering early on before getting into the story when I would start fighting the hordes and then I got to the later stretch and did the gas station and after the end of the game I went on a spree.
@@gamerraider889 I think it had to do with the point attributes and all the weapon upgrades, because I also agree and remember it was so hard to even kill a few as I started the game and near the end I was casually wiping out hordes.
True. Once you're able to carry grenades, molotovs, and super molotovs, hordes ain't nothin...even the biggest ones. Yo, it's fun to fight them, though. Also, the reset feature is amazing. Hoping more games will add this option, alongside the standard NG+
I still want more from this series. if they(Bend Studio) could polish up the systems they had in this game Deacon St. John could be a Playstation mascot. like Kratos or Astro.
I know this game inide and out. Ik glitches that nobody posted on UA-cam that helps against hordes even. Ive played this 20+ times and know EVERYTHING Absolute masterpiece

Deacon was one of the main reasons I went ahead trying to get a motorcycle. I related to his search and love for Sarah so much that I replay the game over and over just for their relationship
Funny, just finished it yesterday again. For like the 3rd or 4th time. One of my favorite games. Sadly the 'critics' reviews and launching it for the OG Ps4 with a terrible framerate did the game no favor.
Days gone is one of the best games I ever played. It's a shame it got mid tier reviews. The soundtrack is awesome. The voice acting is perfect. And the characters are interesting
Veeeery underated game in my opinion, like, come one, we had one game that was like no others: Fresh plot with good plotwist, the gameplay was not boring and the idea of the motocycle was a plus 1 in my book, At the start you are not mr. Walkind Dead but a mr smith trying to live another day and you evolve step by step, the zombies where differents and the side quests where a nice addition, The characters had personalities(ngl, i cried at some cutscenes), kinda sad about not having a sequel and the fact that now we are talking about the game
As of about two years ago, after years of not giving the game a chance due to bad reviews and being stuck in the house after the removal of four wisdom teeth I decided to give this a go. In the beginning I liked it from the start, good introduction to the characters, solid cutscenes and nothing felt out of whack with the game play. I figured "well what part in the game will I hit when I'll finally see why the game got the bad rep"". Couldn't find it. I loved the feel of the bike, the gunplay was fun and I did feel a real threat when fighting enemies. Call me a romantic but I thought that the Sarah thing was a tearjerker for me because I was able to put myself in Deek's shoes. I was blown away when I saw the second part to the game going over the mountain. I didn't expect it, honestly my jaw dropped when I saw that there was yet still an entire section of the game untouched and there was STILL a huge section of the story to go through. End game though I really felt lost, after the story I went around gutting all the caves and such from the freaks, maybe a few collectibles (if I can remember right), but I then felt the emptiness of the world. Like I just finished watching a movie and have that feeling of "...well.. that's it. It's over but I want so much more." If you haven't played this game yet and enjoy open worlds, get it. I'd highly recommend the faster bike speed mod on Nexus as you can really get a better feel for the bike. And crashing at higher speeds yields a higher repercussion. 10/10, would recommend.
The game finally received the love and respect it deserved. So much so that the gamers were asking for the sequel only to be told the cold hard truth. Deacon St. John isn't just some "Joel wannabe" like the TLOU fanboys claim he is. He's a complex character who, in fact is a more hardened survivor than Joel can hope he was in his 20 years of life compare to Deacon's 2 years and has various experiences compare to Joel. Deacon feat-wise has seen the better and worse days, hell even worse than Joel because Deacon fought against hordes upon hordes of zombies which by itself is a feat. What makes Deacon so compelling is that he is a biker through and through and he's not hiding who he is. Him, and his best friend turned brother Boozer are the ONLY people who flied colors. Their plan was to head North to try and fare better than Farewell, an ironic name of the state symbolizing Deacon and Boozer's future depart from it only to stay here in the end because of the people and friends they made along the way and sacrifices that happened. The character developments are insane. Deacon went from a heartless drifter to a caring survivor, helping kidnapped and trouble people, helping camps take care of its own trash, and providing food with his hunt. All in all, Deacon is a carefully-written character who deserved to be in the masterpiece category because this game, by itself is already a masterpiece IGN and other game reviewers slept on.
This game was overhated and overlooked cause Deacon actually is a great character with sarcasm on the surface but a hurt man underneath who is repressing any feelings and in the end he found his wife and became a leader in Iron Mikes settlement after his death.
I love Days Gone. I personally couldn't stand Mike. I get why he runs his camp the way he does but blindly trusting skizzo is nieve, especially when Deek tells him how skizzo wants to take over but Mike dont care. Mikes decision to trust skizzo got people killed when the rippers attacked and his decision to let skizzo go got himself and others killed by the milita. If it wasnt for Deek and Boozer the rippers would've came back. Mikes heart was in the right place and was a good man but the committee should've been making decisions as a group. Atleast in the end he told Deek do what you have to, protect them. Lost lake is in better hands with Deek, Boozer, Rikki and Addy. I wish there was a part 2 even if it was in book form.
Played this in 2021. One of the best games from story to gameplay I have played. Epic music too. Just how the whole story goes further. It reminds me of "The Last Of Us" and maybe its because I played "Days Gone" first, but I think it atleast as good if not better. Although both games are so good.
I really don’t care what anyone says but this may be one of my favorite games of all time. I really just enjoy this game for whatever reason. I could just ride around for hours killing freaks taking down marauders doing jobs for the camps. I enjoy the story as well. When life is tough I just enjoy slowing down and hopping on this game.
Its such a shame that the IP never got a sequel, it was a really good game all said and done, good story, good gameplay, and i love the motorcycle travel in the game, i basically never used the fast travel system while i played, unless it was literally across the map
This game is soooo good man. This game is better than the last of us 2 and that’s tough to say but it is. Only reason it has tough reviews is because of bugs when the game first came out but now it’s just a great open world game
Days Gone is right up there with TLOU in terms of zombie games. I watched an entire walkthrough of this thing because I wanted to see if it was actually worth it. Was it? ABSOLUTELY. I fully intend to get this game sometime soon and run through it on my own terms. I'm a sucker for games like this, and when you've got Sam Witwer as a protagonist? I've been a fan of his since TFU, so that was an immediate win in my book. Reviews for this game were unjustified.

An can’t forget bout his code of honor not killing any females that right there really stand out to me where he spare that one female an how he really was holding on to his humanity an visiting the place his wife die
one of the first few videos that I saw that actually analyzes the story. Thank you for covering this underrated gem! Hopefully more videos to come 🗣️💯
Anyone else realize that Deacon is Starkiller?
Oh yeah Sam Witwer is a great actor.
And he was also in Callisto Protocol
I realized halfway through the video when he made an angry face and I was like "oh shit that's Sam Witwer!" and then I immediately felt immense shame for being fooled by a fuckin beard for like 25 minutes. I'm a Star Wars nerd, I should've recognized the patron saint as soon as he appeared on screen.
Sam Witwer has some big roles but I feel like he’s still kind of underrated
@@rdc4461 in Stephen King's the Mist teen seeing him as Deacon is jarring af. Talented guy though
That mountain pass will always stick with me. What a memorable moment. Filled with hope, filled with longing but equally unsure, scared and plunging into the dark unknown, all alone. Loved it.
God, I love this game. It's levels above being a "zombie game".
Agreed
literally just got the platinum trophy for this game yesterday, what perfect timing!!
Got mine when it first came out was actually my first platinum ever that made me want to platinum other games
Its almost criminal that this story wont continue at the very least in the way it was ment to. Best game ive ever played and the only reason i still own my ps4 gotta replay it every so often
This game deserved way better. Sure it wasn't pulling out much that anyone hadn't seen before gameplay wise, but the STORY gripped me.
I played Days Gone a few years ago. Really enjoyed my time with it.
It's an okay game, it had so much potential but there's nothing left to do after beating the game.
Too few sidequest, more hordes could've been awesome, more weapon or even outfits
If there's a days gone 2, maybe they'll work on all that
This is honestly in my top 3 favorite games of all time. And damn, it earned its spot. I'm still super upset that we ain't getting a sequel
Got the platinum shortly after the game released, and have played through multiple times, currently playing through again right now. Love this game
finally people talking about days gone
Ngl. I was surprized seeing this video and having it remind me of how actually great and also what a hidden gem Days Gone is...though,wished we got a Sequel, because Days Gone DESERVES a Sequel😔
Omg thank you for doing Deacon! He deserves a sequel and this game deserves better!
Great to see this game being talked about. it got a bad wrap and is underappreciated for it. So much more than just 'another zombie game'. His friendship with Boomer is still something I look back fondly on.
*Boozer
This game was heavily underrated, and it definitely deserves a sequel
I’m happy to see this and honestly you present it so well and put it in chronological order to show more. Here’s hoping one day we get a sequel for it. 🎉🎉
The way Deacon talks to himself when he kills people and freaks is so unnerving, you can tell how much of a decline his mental health has taken.
This game was a lot better than I expected it to be, no joke
I honestly found it more enjoyable than RDR2. Before anyone says some of the “corny dialogue”, I agree but I’m convinced it was deliberate to give it a more realistic edge.
RDR2 is full of corny dialogue, itself...so, anyone says that is full of it😂
I didn't care for the Days Gone story, at all, but, the game is a blast to play
Whenever i get depressed, like seriously low, i play this game. I can't describe why it helps it just does.
I still want more from this series. if they(Bend Studio) could polish up the systems they had in this game Deacon St. John could be a Playstation mascot. like Kratos or Astro.
I know this game inide and out. Ik glitches that nobody posted on UA-cam that helps against hordes even.
Ive played this 20+ times and know EVERYTHING
Absolute masterpiece
This makes me want to replay the game
I just replayed Days gone again yesterday. This is perfect timing 😊
as a person that really loves Days Gone I think that this lore video was a really great video because u went into detail and showed proof and evidence to back up ur research and I think that this is a really great video in general so keep up the great work brother
i LOVE THIS GAME . its massively underrated
Im so glad you gave this game the level of care it deserves explorong its narrative. Its basically just this and Last of Us 1 for believable post apocalyptia
Genuinely one of my favourite games of all time, such a slept on gem.
Days gone my beloved. 🖤
I’m pissed I’ll never be able to play this game for the first time again.
I love days gone so much
Days gone was so slept on I wish we could get a days gone 2
I love this game! Fun gameplay, beautiful soundtrack, a dense atmosphere and characters that are much more complex than critics wanted to admit.
Deacon was one of the main reasons I went ahead trying to get a motorcycle. I related to his search and love for Sarah so much that I replay the game over and over just for their relationship
The ride up to the mountains was as satisfying as the mountain hike delivery in Death Stranding😅
This dude steady making bangers
You get my fucking follow I love this game glad you covered it
This is one of the best gaming experiences ever
Played this game in May I loved the story
Just beat this game for the first time. God damn, what a hidden gem. It's going to be my first platinum too
Days gone was one of the greatest zombie games ive ever played. Its truly a tragedy it wont get a sequel
Dang, I never noticed Deek’s aversion to open water before. Now I want to replay the game with that in mind.
Such a good game! I need to play this. I'm from Oregon. That seems like a cool setting for a 28 days later cannibal rage virus.
Days Gone is a masterpiece in my book. I loved the game's story and I really hope they give the sequel another chance.
Nice to see another work of fiction that has zombies that aren't called zombies.
The music in the game is so amazing!
Finally someone making a video about Deacon
I think DG is probably the most underrated game of the entire last gen.
Yesss I been waiting for something like this
One of my favorite characters of all time. Morally grey man with his heart in the right place.
This game is so underrated. I feel like its one of the cooler zombie games out there.
I beyond loved Days gone. Give us a sequel it a remaster please
Veeeery underated game in my opinion, like, come one, we had one game that was like no others:
Fresh plot with good plotwist, the gameplay was not boring and the idea of the motocycle was a plus 1 in my book,
At the start you are not mr. Walkind Dead but a mr smith trying to live another day and you evolve step by step, the zombies where differents and the side quests where a nice addition,
The characters had personalities(ngl, i cried at some cutscenes), kinda sad about not having a sequel and the fact that now we are talking about the game
Love this game
Yeah he's more than a lonely biker he's Darth vaders apprentice and the killer of multiple Jedi (if you get this your cool)
I haven’t played days Goan but this video makes me want to😂
Seeing deacon cry is so heartbreaking
Love to see some love for Days Gone.
Man if we don't get a part 2 to this story, it is absolutely incredible and in my own humble opinion I think this game rivals the last of us series.
Like I just finished watching a movie and have that feeling of "...well.. that's it. It's over but I want so much more."
If you haven't played this game yet and enjoy open worlds, get it. I'd highly recommend the faster bike speed mod on Nexus as you can really get a better feel for the bike. And crashing at higher speeds yields a higher repercussion.
10/10, would recommend.
wooooo days gone character analysis!!
This has to be one of the best story based zombie games. I really hope they make a sequal or another game set in the IP
Amazing video
Shame this ain't getting a sequel, it was a fantastic take on a zombie apocalypse and the gameplay was just so much fun aswell
Great video, great channel!
Let’s goooo, game is a gem. Can’t wait to get into this video
You know, I was just about to start another run on this game then I saw this video
Played this in 2021. One of the best games from story to gameplay I have played. Epic music too. Just how the whole story goes further. It reminds me of "The Last Of Us" and maybe its because I played "Days Gone" first, but I think it atleast as good if not better. Although both games are so good.
I love this game so much. I platinum games and I only platinum games that I really like.
I think this is why’s deacons swimming was not there in the first game! PTSD
Loved this game! Enjoyed Deacon and hoped for another game!
That secret ending will forever live in my head 😧
Loved this 🙏🏿👊🏿
