I've lived in Houston all but the first 2 years of my life, so to all the newbies coming into Houston, I would suggest a Houston starter kit with the following:
    1. Raincoat, boots, umbrella: at some point, you, your car, and/or your house will be under, swimming through, or submerged in water. H-town is a basin built on flat land. Review the flood plane before you buy/rent property and ACTUALLY pay attention to emergency weather reports.
    2. A car: Houston is 22 miles long and actually bigger on it's own than 6 other US cities. Transport is spotty, so a car is essentially essential if you want to keep a job or have a social life.
    3. Roach spray: you can fumigate all you want, they come back, have a can or two at the ready.
    4. A/C: You don't have a/c in your car or house, you don't have friends. It's hot as hell here and the humidity in the latter half of the year is brutal. NOBODY WALKS because it's too damn hot! We literally built 6 full miles of tunnels and businesses under our downtown city area so metro workers can travel building to building or have lunch without having to breach the surface. Think about that!
    5. A phone: You will be in traffic for at least 30% of your day. I don't advocate texting and driving, but you won't be driving, you'll just be sitting there on the freeway, so put your friend on speaker and chat away.
    6. Side of town awareness: If you live in Pearland and all your friends live in Humble, you will have no friends. No one is coming to visit you. That's an hour drive with traffic, and let it be raining...nah, ain't comin. You literally need to move closer---is the only solution.
    7. Street Smarts: This isn't 1950. Lock your house up when you leave, hide all your valuables in your car when you park (even at your own apartment), be aware when you come and go. Get a camera alarm system. Big city. Big city problems. Crime is real, petty and the murder type. Any section of town that ends in the words "Homes, Point, Side, Town, or Ward," read up on those crime stats.
    8. An open mind: some people assume it's cowboy hats, horses, church, and republicans only, but Houston diversity is a real thing. There are people from all over the world. You can go down a major street and literally see the language and culture and food places change from block to block.
    9. A gym membership: the food is reeeaaaallll good down here, so if you're not careful, it'll get you.
    10. Fake/Real Politeness: we are in the South and southern charm is still a thing, but it's fake/real. A lot of people still greet strangers and ask how you're doing, but you're not intended to stop and have a conversation, just smile, nod, and/or say fine and keep it moving. Some do genuinely want to chat, so oblige on occasion as there are some really nice people here. Also get used to saying "ya'll." Okay ya'll!

I used to live in dallas and went to Houston for the first time in 2007 . Things have definitely changed. Houston is a product of too many ppl from different areas moving there at the same time. If you are coming to Texas, any part of Texas really, make sure that you put a Texas Tag or EZ Tag to your car, because believe it or not, one day by mistake you are going to end up in a toll road; and then, you are going to find out about a ticket that is overdue like a year after. A lot of times, the toll road ramps are not marked very clear, you think that is a regular highway and you are wrong.
If you are renting an apartment or buying a house, make sure it is not in a flooding zone. If you do, don't rent the lower level.

I visited Houston a month ago for a week, mind you this was my very first time in Houston. I stayed in Katy and drove around and looked for houses in one of the many new master planned communities and brought one from Perry Homes in the Cypress area. That’s how much I instantly fell in love with Houston. Coming back to Florida after that visit made me realize just how boring and limited most of Florida is. I mean hell one of the highway in Houston is called the energy corridor due to the oil and energy sector. So I’m back in Florida right now gearing up for the drive again in a week to close and get my keys. Also I noticed that the new houses have much better curb appeal than the average house in Florida.

I'm from NJ too, I notice a lot of people can't drive and shouldn't be driving. They make rules as they go, rather then following the driving rules. NJ/NY has mass transit. Here you will have people driving that normally wouldn't. Here there are so many seniors, and nervous drivers on the road in NY/NJ they take the transit. As a result, you have lot of fender benders accidents here. Where we are from is more compact there no room for errors,
You must follow the driving rules or else.. I like the middle turn lane, yea I had get use to it. I love the ample turn arounds on the feeders. It keeps the traffic moving.
I move here from NJ 2007 for the affordable housing, diverse homes and areas to choose from. Now because, of the influx of new comers home prices has risen. Another thing I mostly love here, is the clean roads, streets and, highways.. You don't see garbage, they take pride in their city.

Welcome to Houston. I agree with you on the crazy weather and hard to navigate freeways 100%. It's hard to deal with. I think that the walking situation all depends on where you live. I live in a neighborhood right next to cross streets Cypresswood Drive and Champion Forrest Drive and it has plenty of walking space and trails. Its a beautiful area. As far as the bug situation I haven't had to deal with that but your landlord is probably using a pest control business who's not honest. If they come and spray once a month there would be no bugs but what they tend to do is either water down their chemicals or just use water so they can keep coming back and charging. My uncle owned a pest control business and I learned a lot about it and he taught me how to run the business honestly and thats how you keep faithful customers by giving great service. I worked for him in the summer growing up. You're right about all the plastic surgery going on here with certain women. When I first moved here it seemed like most women were either strippers or trying to get into modeling, music industry or date local musicians lol. They're in the wrong area for that. Go to California lol. I remember going with my son to a game store and he used a bunch of $1 bills that he'd been saving up to buy his game and the guy smiled and asked me if I was a stripper ! I was so pissed lol. He apologized and said he inly said that because there are a lot of strippers in Houston. I have never had plastic surgery and I don't dress like a stripper. There are a lot of great things and fun places to go in Houston and I hope you get to see that side and enjoy it here. Hopefully you can make some good friends who can who can show you the better side of Houston and the places that don't cost so much to go to.

Thank you! Nowhere is perfect but some places are better. What part of California are you in?

I’m from Phx Az and have family in Houston. I have been looking into moving to Houston but like where I live I do not want to live somewhere where the sense of community is slim. People don’t make newcomers feel welcome where I’m at because of Political BS and nobody wants people from Cali moving to Phx because they think they are all radical “left loonies”. I just want to move somewhere where this is just not the case. I want to find a place where communities just have that social feel, people are friendly and welcoming and finding friends is a guarantee because almost Everyone is friendly… and believe it or not I’m sad after seeing the comments that Houston may be one of those places people are becoming so self absorbed they almost do not have a social life… it’s all make believe on social media. My next step is visiting so I can find out for myself… obviously that’s a must when you want to make a move!

Wow Mo I hope you make the right decision for you. I love the weather. Its hot but everywhere is ac to the max, which I dont prefer but I get it. They anticipate the heat. I suggest visiting during the summer months, July and August esp and see how you tolerate the weather.

You could of Googled ALL of this. Also, try using a map, or try getting familiar with the concept of a map.

The turn you were referencing is called a michigan left. There all over the midwest also many roundabouts.
