  • One of the biggest issues with the abandoned Miata was the old soft top, the glass window had totally fallen out and exposed the interior to the elements for over a year! This wasn't as bad of a job as I was expecting and it really saved me a lot of money! With some patience, help from a friend (or girlfriend) I think anyone with some basic skills and tools can tackle this, but what do you think?

I hope you put fresh foam seals between the rain rail rivets or it'll probably end up leaking. Same for the 12 holes where the rain rail gehts bolted betwneen the chassis and the 3 brackets. Butyl rope kind of also works if you forgot the seals or are trying to fix a leak from these bolt holes due to deteriorated seals.
The latches need new locking tabs / buttons. These aren't available OEM but theres 3d printed or cnc aluminium pieces aftermarket stuff.
Once it's fixed and latches up just park it in the sun for a couple days while closed and it'll stretch. :)

There wasn’t any foam there before but that does make sense! I live in a very dry climate but I’ll keep an eye on it.
Thanks for the tips on the latches, that makes sense I’ll look that up now. Thanks!

I did a soft top on an mr2 spyder before and the roof needs to set for a week or 2 before it works properly

Bought a hard top some time ago that had clamps that wouldn't fully lock, a bit like yours. My poor-college-student solution was to stick a penny in between the clamp and the button, and that shockingly did the trick. It was something to do with the clamp/button part getting worn down...and I'll admit, I drove it for years with a penny on each side, and it held it solidly. Would I recommend this now? Depends on your college debt, I guess. 😀
