Because if you're character like Mike, life's all about it. Truly it is. A guy such as Mike hasn't got anything to do with 'stupid' family life where everybody plays their role for thirty years to raise some children you don't even know what are they gonna become like. Mike's a man in need of following a strong character as Neil, also he's a man in need of action and adrenaline. He is not in for the money from the beginning, it's all about the action and being part of a team, team that you love and you can die without regrets. Other things, women, children, cars, estates, they're all what society demand you to have, it's not you. I guess dying there during the robbery was enough for Mike, he wouldn't be so pleased with a regular family life without any friends around to kill or get killed with ...
It's kinda sad when you think about it because he was that guy and he did have a wife and kids in the movie. Guess he couldn't balance the two. He wanted the action more
I think you've over analysed his character. There is no societal demand today for family. It's normal not to have a wife or kids. I highly doubt he views his family as a some kind of anchor weighing him down from his love for action. Sure, his talent and adrenaline addiction is an aspect of it. But that one line "I want my 750" shows that he also does it for the money. He is seen as very happy around his children and his wife.
Right, Michael! This scene, which is OWNED by Sizemore, is such a crucial one in an amazing movie. I just spent time above responding to cats who commented like seven years ago (I noticed afterwords!) Half of ‘em probably dead now. Hope you’re alive! Rock on, brother.

Tom Sizemore is such an underrated actor. One of those classic supporting actors that help carry a movie. In the same vein of Willem Dafoe, William H Macy, Christopher Walken, etc.
You should check him out as the lead in this short-lived CBS cop show called Robbery Homicide Division. Visually and tonally, it's got a very HEAT vibe to it. A couple eps are on UA-cam.

You gotta love Neil's asking Trejo's character, "You too?" as if he knew the guy didn't need a long explanation of the risks or any advice, and Trejo's character was so non-chalant with his response as if they were deciding where to go for dinner! lol
Sizemore, with the rapid blinking of the eye, facial intensity, and infamous juice line makes it clear that money has never been his motivating factor for his path in life. Its the action. Wonderful textured scene collaborating very talented actors. This is Cinema.
JimmyJam1125 - exactly. Irony is he would've fit right in with The Ex Presidents and their naturalistic recoil against the system. It was never about money for them.
Jim D this scene is incredible, they are figuratively, and literally at a cross roads. The desolate background showing they aren't 'friends' in the true sense of the word. Just criminals who have come together, and will either never see each other again or succeed in the robbery and still never see each other again. The whistle and jingling bit of music as Michael considers his option sounding almost like prison bars as he has to make the most important decision of his life is amazing. Criminals are impulsive and reckless. 'I roll with you Neil... whatever.' Neil's almost like a father figure, or brother, to him by now. He's simultaneously addicted to the thrill of crime and doesn't want to bail on his only friends. So he throws it all away. The lens shot of them by the cars is so well done, they are 'nothing' but what they do. How many criminals are now serving endless years of jail time for a stupid impulsive crime they could've easily backed out of. Anger, addiction, thirst for adrenaline all mean most guys like this always get caught. His acting is superb in this.
Yeah. Maybe they already know that he was already decisive on this. McCaulay was just asking him to simply have a reminder. Cuz you know... It's fuc*ing MACHETE!
Out of all of Tom Sizemore's roles, this is my favorite, "the action is the juice", intense & charismatic, Tom has always delivered the goods. RIP Tom Sizemore, condolences to your familia.
I love how De Niro leveled with Sizemore and honestly told him he’d lay low if he were in his shoes, even though you can tell he would like his help. For a bad guy he showed a lot of character and respect.
and also when je helped Kilmer to get bis wife back she betrayed him, De Niro helped him without that he even know. Later, when they have finished with the Bank Job and De Niro saved his life, he brought him to Nate, where Kilmer suddenly goes his own way... Neil was a true friend, Kilmer didnt realized that.
@@mustafaburak4907 This, in my opinion, is symbolic of Neil's inability to follow his one rule: Don't let yourself get attached to anything you are not willing to walk out on in 30 seconds if you feel the heat around the corner. Ironic, considering he was a lone wolf and met a girl, while Kilmer's character already has a wife and child. Yet, Kilmer was able to walk away from them when the heat was literally around the corner (in the scene, I mean), while Neil goes back for revenge instead of walking away with the money, the girl, and the freedom. And when he does have to walk out on it all, it's already too late.
This scene alone portrays Michaels character, he had enough to retire, a loving family, everything a man would want and he STILL wants to risk it all just for the rush of it. “The action is the juice”
"The Action is the Juice". That perfectly sums up this iconic actor who starred in three of my favourite movies: Heat, Saving Private Ryan and Black Hawk Down. RIP.

Throwing down with Val and Deniro. I wonder if Mann thought if Sizemore had the chops for this scene and not only does he stand toe to toe with these titans but he steals the scene. Well done Sizemore.
I like the look from Val Kilmer’s character when DeNiro says he has plans to leave after the job. Val really sells the look of surprise on that news. Only a few seconds but just adds to this scene
makes me feel like they are very close, more than the others. like, Neil looked out for him., maybe like a little brother. also, how Neil confronted val kilmers wife over adultery. they dont really explore the background of their relationship outside of prison though so
It’s stuff like that that makes this movie so rich. There’s no scene where Neil gets pulled aside and interrogated on why he’s leaving the crew for unnecessary drama. The movie just trusts you to read into all the context you’ve been given to understand that a 2 second shot of val kilmer looking surprised is meaningful, and has implications about the history of the crew and the relationship between these two guys. They put in the time before shooting so they didn’t have to waste yours.
As much as I love this scene I find it funny that those guys have probably heard the "30 seconds" speech from Neil hundreds of times and are probably thinking in their heads "for fucks sake Neil we get it"
Potato Sack when the shit is real, hearing something like that isn't a throwaway moment. As in war, which is what this is for them, life or death has meaning. Not like for us sitting at home WATCHING war movies.

Tom Sizemore just oozes charisma. He steals so many scenes... I can remember watching his cameo in 'Point Break' for the first time, when it first came out, back in '91, think it was '91, and he was superb in that. A great actor, hope he's doing well.
If you can see this on a big theater screen, do it. The details are amazing. Most important: the actors’ eyes. Mann has said that on rewatching it he was struck by the truth and emotion in their eyes. Spot on with Sizemore, who has amazing light eyes. This scene? and the one in the diner where he totally intimidates a concerned citizen with a two-second glare. This is what acting is about! He is endlessly watchable in “Heat.”

It's a shame what Sizemore did to both himself and his career. He could have been an all-time great. Guy had all the talent in the world. One of the best movies ever. Definitely top three in the crime genre all time.
Tom Sizemore played it straight. Neil was a cult of personality. They loved his loyalty an honesty. Mike could a got away. But had a loyalty to the genius Neil. Couldn't back away. An if I was part of this crew I couldn't either.
Tom Sizemore’s delivery of the iconic line, “For me, the action is the juice,” is brilliant. R.I.P., beloved Tom. You and your excellent acting are sorely missed.
Cheritto was an addict but his addiction wasn't drugs or booze, it was doing capers and taking down scores. Just like when normal people can drink but know their limits, it also applies to Cheritto. The risk vs. reward of doing this single score for Cheritto was never worth it. When you got a ton of money in the bank but continue to put yourself at risk for jail or getting killed. Cheritto probably would've gone insane sitting around his house playing dad without being a part of the life of being in a crew.
As a Heat fanatic I can honestly to other fanatics watching this with Michael Mann commentary ON is a MUST. Incredible. The information on the character background is top notch. Neil is an Ex Marine it is in the exposition on the screenplay n u can see the eagle globe anchor on his arm as he exits Eadys bed. So proud of that. please comment on my comment would love to hear. the crew wasnt all ex miltary but operated like it. MMs criminal films r a must with commentary on. from this to Public Enemies to Collateral. love Marty but MM is on another level of realism. I've seen Heat over 50xs easily. for some reason although my wife thinks I'm crazy it's a great 2am Sat nite a lil buzzed, relaxed go to sleep movie. I'm mean u make it til the end but u snooze or just watch in a very relaxed way. just the criminal dialogue as Siskel n Ebert put it is so realistic for any of us off the street or had a past it is a movie that is spot on. Rocky will always be my all time favorite but this is 1a. great comments down below from fellow experts "Jimmy Jam" etc I love it. Wen MM breaks down DeNiros character n the real Neil n the real life DT who actually shared a cup of coffee with him it's priceless. MM being from Chicago did a great job telling Dillingers real life story. Great book by the way. The Town as well n pays homage to this movie which RD was robbed of a Nomination as well as the picture. if u watch LA Takedown the TV version of this then watch what RD does with the same lines it's just incredible. strong silent type in this flick. the gray suits so he doesn't stand out in public. the rented house with no furniture. the 150,000 per man scores just spot on. I could speak of this movie all day lol do Urself a favor n see it with the commentary. would have made a great book. one last thing, I was blessed with finding a NYC midnight showing of this movie in the back of the village voice in a small Chelsea theatre. I took my wife it was sold out. to see it in that settin again was just incredible. a rumored longer version of the town exists n oh yes the deleted scenes from this movie r just awesome especially the final drive around before they take the score n check the slot n block one last time. Michael taps into the alarms from a laptop n it's go time. plse comment on my comment lol.
+sam hamdan yes I mentioned it in my comment loved it. but the same lines coming from Robert DeNiro is unbelievable. better actor better delivery. but yes great movie even more realistic scores they took especially the first score in the beginning of the movie. The Town had a middle movie score made the movie better. if The Town n Heat were released together u would have Ben as a prequel n a younger DeNiro n Heat the same crew more or less later in life as a sequel.
Michael is such an interesting character in this movie, because on the one hand he is a stone cold monster and on the other he is a good friend that you empathize with lol
I always thought that Tom Sizemore could have played Tony Soprano just as well, if not a bit differently, than James Gandolfini. Too bad he got messed up on drugs these past years.
+Fan Made Videos HBO producers actually had Tom Sizemore and Ray Liotta on their list for Tony Soprano role. Ray turned it down and Sizemore blew it which opened the doors for James Gandolfini(rip) who did a masterful job in his own right.
The actor (I apologize for forgetting his name) who played Jackie Aprile Sr in Sopranos was neck & neck for the Tony role too w Gandolfini. Funny how much a life changer that decision was.
Bro Gandolfini portrayed Tony Soprano as good as anyone has ever been portrayed. He did it so well, he stopped being James Gandolfini. That isnt a marginilization. He was just that good.

RIP Tom. May your soul find rest.
RIP. my most favourite actor of the 90´s
RIP Tom Sizemore you were my favorite actor
2:11 - I feel Neil is somewhat disappointed by Michael's willingness to risk it all.
Obviously.. because he wanted him to sit that one out.
RIP Tommy Sizemore you worked your way into my heart as one of my favorite actors.
Tom sizemore was awesome,in a classic, timeless
In remembrance of Tom Sizemore. Rest In Peace, Michael Cheritto!
To think that he was only 33 when "Heat" was filmed... Such an incredible actor, such an incredible screen presence.
De Niro, Kilmer and Sizemore with Danny Trejo along for the ride. Great scene
I think Michael Mann knows how to make exceptionally good movies !
RIP to a GREAT actor.
Sizemore and Gadolfini. Epic actors.
"The action IS the juice." R.I.P. Tom Sizemore.
Chris was the only one to survive, mike should have split.
Tom Sizemore’s delivery of the iconic line, “For me, the action is the juice,” is brilliant. R.I.P., beloved Tom. You and your excellent acting are sorely missed.
RIP to a real one, Tom Sizemore.
"I got more motivation to whack VanZant than either of you." LOLOL
Rest in Peace Tom, and thank you..
They always follow NEIL he is the BOSS
Sizemore's facial expressions in this scene are phenomenal . ~ Godspeed Tom
Tom Sizemore be at peace, wild man. What an amazing 👏 life. Always wanted to get drunk with him, bet he had some stories. Fly high, RIP. UK fans 🇬🇧
The action is the juice but during the action he got juiced
coker1971 "when it rains, you get wet"
He knew the risk he didn't have to be there.
If he was smart he'd cut loose to this...he was warned lol
Michael taps into the alarms from a laptop n it's go time. plse comment on my comment lol.
have you ever seen the original heat - LA Takedown, great movie....
N M Jr. #heat4life
LA takedown was kinda tv quality. bad. but it was a sketch to the heat/
Why pacino and his gf and portman was bad. i dont get it. it was to show how bad his relationship was
RIP, Tom, you will be remembered.
One of the greatest scenes in action movies, and tom sizemore was outstanding
Michael is such an interesting character in this movie, because on the one hand he is a stone cold monster and on the other he is a good friend that you empathize with lol
I love the smile that Sizemore starts getting when he looks at his friends, like the cat that ate the canary
RIP Tomy Sizemore🙏
RIP Tom sad to hear he passed away. Great actor.
Sil,Richie or Phil could of been good as Tony also.I would of liked to see Tom or Ray as Tony too.Pacino and De Niro also.
The actor (I apologize for forgetting his name) who played Jackie Aprile Sr in Sopranos was neck & neck for the Tony role too w Gandolfini. Funny how much a life changer that decision was.
Fan Made Videos Nobody could have outshined Gandolfini. Born to play that role!
Bro Gandolfini portrayed Tony Soprano as good as anyone has ever been portrayed. He did it so well, he stopped being James Gandolfini. That isnt a marginilization. He was just that good.
