A splendid summary of this fascinating and scenic area, it must have been an incredible place to go back in steam and early diesel days. Well done indeed Andrew.
Illuminating, and very enjoyable record! It's fascinating to see the logistics of getting such wonderful compositions - the results speak for themselves - Excellent!
Cheers Simon, there’s an incredible amount of freight traffic coming out of the quarries at the moment, I believe HS2 might have something to do with the increase.
Thanks 👍, yes, on some of these full days out I'm absolutely shattered after the drive home, but its great to have a day out doing what I enjoy in stunning scenery.
Another wonderfully entertaining and educational presentation. Well done Andrew. I’ve never visited this area in all my years of photography. You’ve certainly “peaked” my interest!
Thanks Steve, there are some great locations and this video just scratches the surface, have a look in the video description I’ve linked Nigel Capelles Flickr account, he has some stunners from the Buxton area.
Another great film Andrew, thanks for producing and putting up. Coincidentally, just back from a short break with family to the Peak District. I managed a coiple of early morning trips to Peak Forest and like you, was amazed at the volume of freight moving around. I had to back to the Airbnb by 08.00 (otherwise family would have disowned me!) so was a bit limited to search out locations, however will head back there at some point in the future as there's so many great places to photograph. Thanks again, Andy
It's a pleasure Andy, I know what you mean, sneaking off whilst on holiday! Yes I was amazed at the volume of traffic first thing on a morning through Peak Forest, a great location for a holiday and railway photography.
Thanks not only for sharing that footage/stills but the ideas for lineside locaions - much appreciated. Have searched over the years all sorts of places in Scotland and Salisbury-Exeter and other sections of line but not yet tried the Peak District. Late winter/early spring looks ideal as less foliage to get in the way. Thanks again.
Glad it was helpful! April tends to be a great month, we've got over the winter cold and it can have some pleasant weather, plus the trees haven't come into leaf yet, an added bonus on our increasingly treed up railway.
Great video. Many cold mornings spent up there with my dad in the 90s. Fortunately the traction was a little more interesting back then with double headed 37s with a banker on the back
Another super video which is very informative; especially with the camera settings. Good location information and editing of the video. Thats a super place to get some great working shots. Topped off by that little bit of humor. Fantastic.
A new game! You gotta predict correctly how many times Andrew says the word 'Composition' 😂 Joking aside, a lovely location! I must go up there one of these days.
Great video, I m a amateur photographer and since i moved to buxton just over a year ago iv become very interested in freight train photography but could never find good spots over than . Learning alot from this video.
Excellent video again, really enjoyed this one, I used to drive similar trains out of Westbury, so a great reminder of those days. I’m starting to guess when you take the photo, love your style.
Yes Andrew they are very familiar, if you do get down there, there’s some great views over Merehead and Whatley quarries. Also Westbury will have its chalk White horse as a backdrop. We used to call ourselves Limestone Cowboys .. 😂
Great stuff Andrew, I went there recently and was surprised how busy it was. Certainly plenty of opportunities to see freights compared to the Boulby branch in Tees 🤣
Your not kidding, Ben, plenty of activity, just need to get the timing right to be in the right spot, now that reminds me I must get back up to Teesside!!
Thanks Dan, I bend images if the conditions dictate, mostly evening and low light work is blended, this gives me the opportunity to stop the train generally with a high ISO value, then take another shot at a longer exposure and low ISO, blended later in photoshop. most of the shots in daytime as in this video aren’t blended, just processed in Lightroom.
When watching UA-cam railway videos I always keep Bing Maps open in a separate tab, it offers a free Ordnance Survey view, understandably not bang up to date but plenty good enough for most purposes.
grate videos Andrew my only gripe you shoot locos thay are good dissidence a way the loco and land scape look better when locos a close up shot of the locos and land close up from dissidence other than that grate video andrew
Superb stuff again thanks, I’m no photographer so could you explain the numbers you put up at the bottom of each photo you take please? Mark ( Nottingham)
Hi Andrew, huge fan of your channel and this video is brilliant as I not only take railway photos but also am a modeller and have a stone railhead, so this subject hit the mark. Thank you. A question if I may, did you research on an OS map for which footpaths to use? Rob
Thanks Rob, glad you enjoyed it. I'm generally always planning and looking at locations, I use OS Maps, Google Maps, sun position calculator apps and looking at other photographers work. All to build up a list of locations I'd like to visit. On this one though I was guided by a local photographer.
Hello, thanks for the comment, if you look on google maps and follow the A6 south out of Buxton, you’ll come to Chee Dale Lay-by, from here you can see the tunnel and Tunstead works in the distance, there’s also a decent shot almost from the lay-by if you want.
Theres a couple of websites I use, www.realtimetrains.co.uk and www.railcam.uk for the live diagrams - although that one is paid on a small annual subscription.
Hello again, i m just rewatching the video. 2.38 in you say your waiting for a sudden freight train. How did you know it was coming? Is there a app? Also did you know there a place near buxton station where the freight come into a siding where they move to the other end of the freight. Its great seeing them come over the fire ducts in buxton.
Thanks Matt, there’s a couple of Websites that I use, Realtime Trains www.realtimetrains.co.uk and Railcam www.railcam.uk. I did see the siding where the freights engines run around the train and the viaduct through Buxton does look a super spot, I must get back over there at some point.
Many thanks, I take your point but its a compromise between lingering too long on a train and keeping the pace of the video going, it's always going to be tricky to strike the balance.
haha loved the ending :)
Cheers Pete, I thought it genius too when the idea popped in my head 😃
Yes Pete
Great locations, giving you some great shots, and the bonus of you keeping fit with all the exercise
Absolutely, yes I certainly did some walking and climbing that day.
A splendid summary of this fascinating and scenic area, it must have been an incredible place to go back in steam and early diesel days. Well done indeed Andrew.
Glad you enjoyed it, for that time machine again, I'd imagine if still open the line through the Dale would be very popular today.
Illuminating, and very enjoyable record! It's fascinating to see the logistics of getting such wonderful compositions - the results speak for themselves - Excellent!
Many thanks, Anthony, it's a great hobby for getting out and about and seeing the country.
Brilliant Video Andrew, always straight here when you upload!
Thanks so much, what a lovely comment, which makes all the effort worthwhile👍
Plenty of line action in this one Andrew, nice locations and a surprise ending, great bit of filming.
Thanks Peter, yes this one was an action packed day, location and weather couldn’t be better. Glad you liked this effort.
Lovely video of the area of the Peak District. Some lovely photos and movements as well.
Cheers Simon, there’s an incredible amount of freight traffic coming out of the quarries at the moment, I believe HS2 might have something to do with the increase.
Love from India. Thanks for so beautiful scenic view.
So nice of you, have a great day.

You get too some great locations and take some great photos you must be tired when you get home thanks for taking us on your day out 😀👍
Thanks 👍, yes, on some of these full days out I'm absolutely shattered after the drive home, but its great to have a day out doing what I enjoy in stunning scenery.
Another awesome video at an iconic UK freight location
Thank you very much, Andrew, this certainly is an iconic freight location, a spot I wish I'd visited back in the 80/90's though.
Great, your enthusiasm and genuine northern manner, reminds me of my own roots.
Many thanks, Mark, aye a true northerner born and bred.
Another Masterclass, thanks for posting, a grand day out from the armchair in North Wales!
Regards, Pete, keep safe.😎
Glad you enjoyed it Peter, It was a super day out, with stunning scenery, heavy industry and plenty of freight.
I really enjoyed your day out with the freight trains Andrew your got some beautiful pictures.
Glad you like them! this was a super day, one of the best this year so far.
Yes, an explosive ending...no fade to exit on this vlog: excellent as ever!
Thanks John, I was so chuffed when that idea popped in my head, glad you enjoyed the rest of the video too👍
Only just found this and have subbed. Gotta get up there and do some of those walks.
Just discovered your channel today, and I am really enjoying it.

As always amazing video. Your photography always inspires me to look at alternative compositions
Thank you very much, that's always the challenge finding a new or interesting composition.
Thank you Andrew for making this, really interesting and wonderful location🙃
Thank you, Annette, this is a lovely part of the country, the quarry works are quite well hidden too.

Thanks so much, that’s appreciated.
Love your videos keep them coming very well put together
Glad you like them! there's more to come.
Another great video Andrew I'm putting it on my list for a future visit
I’d thoroughly recommend it, there’s an enormous amount of traffic coming out of there at the moment, I believe a lot is for HS2.
@@AndrewShenton My local freight only line only has one scheduled diagram each day with an occasional extra working
Do some research on train timings, early morning and evening looks very busy, search Peak Forest Signal Box on Real Time Trains.
Great video. Many cold mornings spent up there with my dad in the 90s. Fortunately the traction was a little more interesting back then with double headed 37s with a banker on the back
Glad you enjoyed it Paul, that does sound like some memorable experience.

Glad it was helpful! It is a super location and one for any season, although I do fancy a mid winter visit.
That’s a good place to go
It is indeed, I fancy trying in the depths of winter too.
My favourite freight trains run in these areas, great video keep it up :) Nice shots
Thanks so much, there’s an incredible amount of freight running currently.
@@AndrewShenton I’m going to Chinley viaducts in October I can’t wait!
Excellent Andrew, a lot of fantastic Images and amazing locations too 👍
Thank you so much 😀 Andrew, this is a superb spot for the mix of locations and views, from scenic to industrial.
Great video 👍 It certainly looks like freight train heaven
It was on that day, but I understand its really busy at the moment.
A new game! You gotta predict correctly how many times Andrew says the word 'Composition' 😂

Fantastic video Andrew, coming to the UK in Sept from Canada, this video will be so useful. Cheers
Great to hear! I hope you have a fab time in the UK.
Really excellent work. You deserve at least 100,000 subscribers :)
Thank you so much 😀
hope you dont mind but i screenshot the train on 8.26 because i laughed at the graffiti {i love eggs} lol. nice one
That's cool, never spotted that one!
Class ending 🤣🤣🤣
Many thanks, I had fun with that.
Excellent video again, really enjoyed this one, I used to drive similar trains out of Westbury, so a great reminder of those days. I’m starting to guess when you take the photo, love your style.
Glad you enjoyed it Gary, I'm guessing that heavy stone trains are quite familiar then. Westbury isn't a place I've visited, but its on my list.
Yes Andrew they are very familiar, if you do get down there, there’s some great views over Merehead and Whatley quarries. Also Westbury will have its chalk White horse as a backdrop. We used to call ourselves Limestone Cowboys .. 😂

A fascinating line and great photos once again. Do also blend your shots?
Thanks Dan, I bend images if the conditions dictate, mostly evening and low light work is blended, this gives me the opportunity to stop the train generally with a high ISO value, then take another shot at a longer exposure and low ISO, blended later in photoshop. most of the shots in daytime as in this video aren’t blended, just processed in Lightroom.
Another great video Andrew. Is there any chance that you could possibly include maps in your videos to help those unfamiliar with the area?
Now that’s a great Idea, Ian, let me see what I can do for future ones.
Thanks Andrew, we all have our own photography style, although the train is the subject I do like to include the wider scene where I can.
Next time take a High Biz, and a Briefcase. You can walk/trespass anywhere then lol. 👍👍😁😎😎
Thanks, Ian, no trespassing at all, always behind the fence, but your idea had crossed my mind in the past - hiding in plain sight.
Superb stuff again thanks, I’m no photographer so could you explain the numbers you put up at the bottom of each photo you take please? Mark ( Nottingham)
Thanks Mark, the numbers are the camera EOS-R, Lens RF 24-105mm, then Shutter Speed 1/500, Aperture f8.0 and ISO. So camera and camera settings.

These lines SHOULD be carrying eg St Pancras to Manchester Central expresses. But limestone freights better than now’t I suppose.
Indeed Brian, I did a bit of reading on the line’s history, if it was still open I guess it would be a goldmine running through the Peak District now.
Great film but why do you stop shooting when the train is only 4-5 wagons in? Seeing the whole rake is half the point surely...
Many thanks, I take your point but its a compromise between lingering too long on a train and keeping the pace of the video going, it's always going to be tricky to strike the balance.
