Despite the higher prices...A LOT of folks forget or don't know that in Japan a car that reaches a certain age gets taxed to a point to where ownership of them are pointless. They're treasures to the world, but useless to them

From what I understand how things out there are, from the outside looking in, there’s been an encouragement by the country to keep newer/cleaner cars on the roads to keep smog in check and also promoting safer road going vehicles. There’s no smog checks like the US, as much as a full vehicle analysis to ensure it’s fully safe and fully capable to perform its functions. Not to say older cars can’t perform duties past their duty cycle, just more an incentive to keep cars current on the roads there. So for a LONG time used cars went for good deals. But now in the US, since we’re notorious consumers of EVERYTHING, these treasures are now carb exempt and high demand. Ten years ago you didn’t have to pay the price of a new 911 GT2 for a 22 year old R34 GTR. But then again we’re not talking taxes on Kei cars here, but the overall landscape of cars there, especially super niche, super rare cars to them and the rest of earth 🤙🏾
The prices skyrocketed because of UA-camrs a few years ago going viral saying "you can get these cars super cheap in Japan" and, well, it completely destroyed the import market to the point where even an S13 is almost financially unobtainable. Been in the import business for many years now and used to be able to get my clients the cars they want for a lot cheaper than the bigger US importers were selling them for, since I wasn't really importing them for the sole purpose of money, but wanting to help people achieve their goal of owning their dream JDM car with what they could afford. I don't mean to be rude but after those UA-camrs started going viral about how cheap these cars were in Japan, I've had a pure hatred for those UA-camrs who only did it for views and their own personal gain but ended up single handedly destroying the entire import scene. Example. I've imported about 8 R32 GTRs in the past and sold them to clients for $18-22k while only profiting around $500-1000 per car. After that one UA-camr who did a video on cheap skylines and GTRs, the auction place flooded with high bids on Skylines(well above $35k) within days of the video being released. Now, you can't even find an R32 GTR for less than $45k anywhere. Absolutely ridiculous.
The R32 is my dream car and as a 19-year-old who is still in college, that dream seems to be far fetched. Im kinda hoping prices will go down once the r34 becomes legal in the states and takes all the attention. But I feel like that might be unrealistic unfortunatly. Hopefully I'll be able to get a well paid job once i've finished my study (which will take 3,5 years at minimum, as I'm only in my first year), and the prices aren't above like 80-90K euro's :(

it's like this with many things like sneakers and videogames. there was a time pre-youtube that didn't bring the masses to the hobby. now we have shelf collectors, sneaker resellers, and sport car collectors. I'm sure I'm missing other areas that UA-cam fkd up as well.

When I lived in Japan over 10 years ago, I bought a low mileage clean 94 soarer 1JZGTE TT for 160,000 yen, equivalent to $1500 USD at the time with 2 year shaken. Those were the times.
When I was in Japan 2000/2001, The R34 was almost a brand new car and crazy cheap compared to prices now. The Japanese saw them like Americans saw the face-lift SN95 Mustangs! Imagine how you could have traded a 25k Mustang straight across for a GTR!
I'd take these prices with a grain of salt - things in Japan have gotten expensive, but this dealer is literally across the street from the main gate of the largest American Air Force base in Okinawa. Plenty of young dudes over excited and ready to sign on to a huge loan for a car they can't afford. Plus being a small island (2.5hrs by air to mainland), there's just less available local options. Love the island - wonderful place; but the car market is somewhat in its own bubble.
You’re not wrong at all. But in general their prices have gone up a ton. I’d say they are 10-20% higher than the average mainland prices just because of supply and demand

These prices are outrageous. If I knew what I know now, I'd have stocked up on these cars. I remember when Soarers were 4k shipped and Mk3s where 3k shipped. Times have changed ALOT!
bro iv owned 4 s13s 2x180s, 2x twin turbo 300zx, two r34s, a mk3 and a mk4 supra plenty of others over the last 10-12years many regrets. I just sold my s15 and still have 2x s13 and a stagea so i dont feel 2 bad lol
It's ONLY going to get uglier with the supply chain debacle that's facing Long Beach and LA ports, PLUS, there's a limited number of companies that will supply VINs. I can see Australia and N.Zealand and other Pacific countries gobbling them up before it hits the states

I bought my R33 GT-R from Endless R in 2013 for 14k... with shipping and all taxes + MOT it was about 21k. At the time it was a bit pricey for an MP R33 GT-R, but now I think it was the right buy.

Bought a JDM 04" Forester Cross Sport 2 years ago, low kms, great shape, 5 spd. Low Price.....sold it recently. Now looking for another one, but prices have jumped about $1500.00 not huge but enough. Seeing prices on these other cars...crazy how they have changed over the last 2 years.

Right now closed shipping containers are really expensive one reason being the ports being full and if you don’t want to spend the money for closed container shipping then you can do non crate shipping but that leaves your car/truck Left in the weather and salt water as it comes across seas and it could get messed up easily by that. Also with the ports being slow it could just sit in the ocean waiting for drivers to pick it up and deliver it to you

Didn't realize the JDM legends were selling as astronomically high in Japan as they are in America. Makes sense though. Everyone is dealing with used car inflation. It's absolutely crazy. The black soarer was hella expensive because after 1997 they started making less manuals I believe. I know that the of all the sc300’s that came stateside in 1998 only 120 were manuals.

It's hard watching this market right now. There were times back dating my wife from Japan in 1999 - 2002 that you could get a clean GTR R32 for $5-7k usd. R34 was still new and I have a bunch of old photos of them parked door to door on the lot. Man I miss those days. Also, Japan has lost the luster of those late 90's through early 2000's where you'd see great cars everywhere. Now when we travel back, I'm lucky to see anything rolling around.
Really you could get used R32s for 5-7k $ , this was the exchange rate from that period calculated in current year or 5-7k from that period converted to 13 -15k$ in our days ?

It’s all because the US has finally reached a 25 year mark on the good years of JDM cars, here in Canada we have always been at 15 years same as New Zealand and Australia. For those who don’t know he cannot import a car into United States unless it’s a very low production number or ….25 years old if it’s more common. Same as Canada and so on.

4:12 This car is definitely in a very good condition. In my country you can't find any of those models in original state. Almost all of them had some bodywork done to them due to corrosion and stupid young drivers which use them as some sort of beaters :( However, Toyota Supras are the only JDM cars which are seen in my country in very original state. For example I bought my Supra MK2 for 3000$, I had to renew the breaking lines and renew the coolant pipes in order to get it road legal again but other than this, it's a very nice daily in my opinion. Not as good as my Opel/Vauxhal/Chevrolet Astra G 1.7 Dti which I only refill like every 1900km/1180.61 miles after I done some ECU Tuning on it to save on fuel but it's not as fun to drive as the Supra or my Mercedes 230E Elegance which have quite a lot of power.

I bought my 89’ mk3 Supra for $800 just a couple months ago, however it’s a 7mgte with auto and not a 1jz gte with r154, and Toyota only made a little less than 1,700 cars for 1992 (hence why the price is $25,000ish)

Coming from someone who has owned skylines, silvias, stageas etc I would snap the new z up in a heart beat.. instant classic and looks super easy to mod.

Bought my first JDM suv in 2008 for 900 euros plus 1000 shipping cost to Holland. Then, got 6 Nissan Figaros for less than 1000 euros each and even lost 2 in the Tsunami. The secret to getting any car you want in japan is literally in the junk yards and graveyards of left behind/forgotten cars/projects. A guy bought an r34 shell for around 12k, had to build the car from the ground up but in total he spent right around 45-50k I believe could be wrong but he spent way less than you would on an r34 with semi low miles and rust spots on it . I know the cleanest one had sold for over a million.

It was a rare model apparently had the YS1 LSD factory diff, I modded it with type-r cams, type-r fly wheel, type-r suspension and sold if for $8000NZD...... only bought it for $1900 NZD and spent $3000NZD on mods. From what I understand how things out there are, from the outside looking in, there’s been an encouragement by the country to keep newer/cleaner cars on the roads to keep smog in check and also promoting safer road going vehicles. There’s no smog checks like the US, as much as a full vehicle analysis to ensure it’s fully safe and fully capable to perform its functions. Not to say older cars can’t perform duties past their duty cycle, just more an incentive to keep cars current on the roads there. So for a LONG time used cars went for good deals. But now in the US, since we’re notorious consumers of EVERYTHING, these treasures are now carb exempt and high demand. Ten years ago you didn’t have to pay the price of a new 911 GT2 for a 22 year old R34 GTR. But then again we’re not talking taxes on Kei cars here, but the overall landscape of cars there, especially super niche, super rare cars to them and the rest of earth 🤙🏾
The prices skyrocketed because of UA-camrs a few years ago going viral saying "you can get these cars super cheap in Japan" and, well, it completely destroyed the import market to the point where even an S13 is almost financially unobtainable. Been in the import business for many years now and used to be able to get my clients the cars they want for a lot cheaper than the bigger US importers were selling them for, since I wasn't really importing them for the sole purpose of money, but wanting to help people achieve their goal of owning their dream JDM car with what they could afford. I don't mean to be rude but after those UA-camrs started going viral about how cheap these cars were in Japan, I've had a pure hatred for those UA-camrs who only did it for views and their own personal gain but ended up single handedly destroying the entire import scene. Example. I've imported about 8 R32 GTRs in the past and sold them to clients for $18-22k while only profiting around $500-1000 per car. After that one UA-camr who did a video on cheap skylines and GTRs, the auction place flooded with high bids on Skylines(well above $35k) within days of the video being released. Now, you can't even find an R32 GTR for less than $45k anywhere. Absolutely ridiculous.
The R32 is my dream car and as a 19-year-old who is still in college, that dream seems to be far fetched. Im kinda hoping prices will go down once the r34 becomes legal in the states and takes all the attention. But I feel like that might be unrealistic unfortunatly. Hopefully I'll be able to get a well paid job once i've finished my study (which will take 3,5 years at minimum, as I'm only in my first year), and the prices aren't above like 80-90K euro's :(

When I lived in Japan over 10 years ago, I bought a low mileage clean 94 soarer 1JZGTE TT for 160,000 yen, equivalent to $1500 USD at the time with 2 year shaken. Those were the times.
160,000 yen is 1,398 usd actually!
When I was in Japan 2000/2001, The R34 was almost a brand new car and crazy cheap compared to prices now. The Japanese saw them like Americans saw the face-lift SN95 Mustangs! Imagine how you could have traded a 25k Mustang straight across for a GTR!

I'd take these prices with a grain of salt - things in Japan have gotten expensive, but this dealer is literally across the street from the main gate of the largest American Air Force base in Okinawa. Plenty of young dudes over excited and ready to sign on to a huge loan for a car they can't afford. Plus being a small island (2.5hrs by air to mainland), there's just less available local options. Love the island - wonderful place; but the car market is somewhat in its own bubble.
You’re not wrong at all. But in general their prices have gone up a ton. I’d say they are 10-20% higher than the average mainland prices just because of supply and demand

Bought a JDM 04" Forester Cross Sport 2 years ago, low kms, great shape, 5 spd. Low Price.....sold it recently. Now looking for another one, but prices have jumped about $1500.00 not huge but enough. Seeing prices on these other cars...crazy how they have changed over the last 2 years.

Right now closed shipping containers are really expensive one reason being the ports being full and if you don’t want to spend the money for closed container shipping then you can do non crate shipping but that leaves your car/truck Left in the weather and salt water as it comes across seas and it could get messed up easily by that. Also with the ports being slow it could just sit in the ocean waiting for drivers to pick it up and deliver it to you

Didn't realize the JDM legends were selling as astronomically high in Japan as they are in America. Makes sense though. Everyone is dealing with used car inflation. It's absolutely crazy. It's hard watching this market right now. There were times back dating my wife from Japan in 1999 - 2002 that you could get a clean GTR R32 for $5-7k usd. R34 was still new and I have a bunch of old photos of them parked door to door on the lot. Man I miss those days. Also, Japan has lost the luster of those late 90's through early 2000's where you'd see great cars everywhere. Now when we travel back, I'm lucky to see anything rolling around.
Really you could get used R32s for 5-7k $ , this was the exchange rate from that period calculated in current year or 5-7k from that period converted to 13 -15k$ in our days ?

It’s all because the US has finally reached a 25 year mark on the good years of JDM cars, here in Canada we have always been at 15 years same as New Zealand and Australia. For those who don’t know he cannot import a car into United States unless it’s a very low production number or ….25 years old if it’s more common. Same as Canada and so on.

4:12 This car is definitely in a very good condition. In my country you can't find any of those models in original state. Almost all of them had some bodywork done to them due to corrosion and stupid young drivers which use them as some sort of beaters :(
However, Toyota Supras are the only JDM cars which are seen in my country in very original state.
For example I bought my Supra MK2 for 3000$, I had to renew the breaking lines and renew the coolant pipes in order to get it road legal again but other than this, it's a very nice daily in my opinion. Not as good as my Opel/Vauxhal/Chevrolet Astra G 1.7 Dti which I only refill like every 1900km/1180.61 miles after I done some ECU Tuning on it to save on fuel but it's not as fun to drive as the Supra or my Mercedes 230E Elegance which have quite a lot of power.

I bought my 89’ mk3 Supra for $800 just a couple months ago, however it’s a 7mgte with auto and not a 1jz gte with r154, and Toyota only made a little less than 1,700 cars for 1992 (hence why the price is $25,000ish)

I live in Canada, and as far as I know, they only need to be 15 years old to be imported here. I've seen a few JDMs here in Ontario that would've otherwise been illegal in the US.
The soarer came with the 1JZ GTE and R154 manual as options. They are exceedingly rare, probably why the price point is so high.

Bought my first JDM suv in 2008 for 900 euros plus 1000 shipping cost to Holland. Then, got 6 Nissan Figaros for less than 1000 euros each and even lost 2 in the Tsunami. After the Tsunami it was quite hard to get cars shipped from certain areas. Still managed to get a few more cars until 2011. Then, I noticed prices went up and up... Man I used to buy cars from Japan almost like food from the supermarket down the road haha. Prices have gone mad out there!

One of the only times cars are cheaper in Canada is for those sweet 10 years when we get JDMs before the US. R34s are relatively common around here.

This is absurd, cars i had a dozen of in my backyard i paid $500-$1500 for in the 2000s as parts cars or beaters/drift missles are now going for 5 figures out of nowhere, absolutely ridiculous.

The secret to getting any car you want in japan is literally in the junk yards and graveyards of left behind/forgotten cars/projects. A guy bought an r34 shell for around 12k, had to build the car from the ground up but in total he spent right around 45-50k I believe could be wrong but he spent way less than you would on an r34 with semi low miles and rust spots on it . I know the cleanest one had sold for over a million.
I know there’s a rusty R33 GTR for sale right now for around 13k usd. Seems like a good flip

Recently sold my 1992 JDM Honda Integra. It was a rare model apparently had the YS1 LSD factory diff, I modded it with type-r cams, type-r fly wheel, type-r suspension and sold if for $8000NZD...... only bought it for $1900 NZD and spent $3000NZD on mods. Very happy with my sale of it and purchased a CL9 k24a powered Accord. Loving it too.
