USS Tokyo is one of Japan's biggest auction houses & you can always find any car you're looking for there. I show you some JDM cars there for sale & point out problems with them & why you should never trust the auction reports or the people selling them.
i love how sam just glosses over the fd rx7 as if he saw them everyday, finna move to japan.
At this rate a majority of the right hand drive 90s Japanese sports cars would be exported to another country

There's a big difference when only about 90-100 of those exist on the planet not completely destroyed.

@@mykrrrr and quite a few were destroyed. Most of them were raced in events, dude. It's fair to say that is one of the rarest cars on the planet.
@@mykrrrr it's all about the TME RS versions in White which narrows the gap to only a few still existing :P

in australia about 10 years ago you couldnt hand them to people if you paid them to take it, so many for sale for $300-$500. same with the newer 300zx too and now its just gone insane same with everything, but i think its like our parents generation muscle and older cars, the older awesome muscle cars were dirt cheap and plentyful nowadays theyre painfully expensive! I wonder if our current generation cars will end up like this also.

Damn, thanks for making this. Not only was it insanely interesting to watch and see how these auctions work, but to be completely honest, with all the things you've explained and shown, I feel incredibly lucky to have gotten my Evo in the condition it is for the price I got it. Like.. I basically won the lottery with that thing. It's also crazy to see just how expensive some of those cars are going for, I'm curious to know if those high prices are within Japan or in NA/other countries that are bloating the prices? I couldn't see why they'd be going for so much within Japan since I'd assume they're super common and uninteresting there.
That Supra was like Smokey Nagata's 🔰💯🔰💯 SO sick.

The thing right now is the gap in cars. Since most of the Japanese auto makers stopped making sports cars in 2001-2002 and only started again recently (the exception being the 350z) there is a 5-10ish year gap in cars. Because of this you either buy new, buy cars that are only a few years used (which end up being not much cheaper than new), or, like everyone has been doing for 20ish years, you buy old cars from the 80s and 90s. The problem is that these old 80s and 90s cars were cheap back so everyone bought them, now with so few left and demand rising the supply is drying and prices are soaring.
Also now with the global shortage of computer chips not many new cars are getting made so that's even more demand on the used market. When all the 90s cars are gone in few years (either rusted to death, crashed into oblivion, or show pieces in someone's collection) people are probably going to have to move to 350zs that have started showing up used. Problem is that in that period of time there was really only evos, WRXs, and 350z/370z, until you get to the GT86/BRZ which is still too new to go for good prices used.
If you look at it from a dates perspective (Only looking at Japanese cars).
Rear wheel drive, 2 door:
Prelude: End of production 2001
Silvia: End of production 2002
Supra MkIV: End of production 2002
RX-7: End of production 2002
370Z: End of production 2020 (RIP to the legendary line of the Z, 1969-2000, 2002-2020)
MX-5: Ongoing
GT 86/BRZ: Start of production 2012 (25 years after it's namesake, the AE86 ended production)
Supra MkV: Start of production 2019 (17 year gap)
Four wheel drive, 2 door:
Eclipse GSX: End of production 1999
Mitsubishi 3000GT: End of production 2000
Skyline GT-R: End of production 2002
Celica GT-Four: End of production 2006
GT-R: Start of production 2009 (7 year gap and completely different price point and target demographic)
Four wheel drive, 4 door:
EVO: End of production 2016
WRX/STI: Ongoing
So there is a gap in the early 2000s, only the WRX, EVO, MX-5, and Z series bridge this gap, and two of those are now dead. The WRX is the only 4 door 4-wheel drive left. The GT-R is the only 4-wheel drive coupe left and it's price puts it out of the standard "sports car" market into contention with luxury brands like Porsche. We have three options in the rear-wheel drive coupe section but all at different price points and purposes (the MX-5 and 86 are closer in price, but one is roadster). Miatas are way overpriced used as it is and the few 350Z and 370Zs out there are going to be the only relatively good stock entering the used market until the 86/BRZs start drifting in. The only good thing I can see is that the Civic Type-R is also a thing now at a somewhat decent price point.
To give an idea on the issue with price, a Spec-R B Package S15 retailed for 2,290,000 Yen, or $20,760 back in 2000, this roughly $32,450 in 2021 cash. To give us something to relate this to, the MX-5 sold for $23,000 in 2000. A 2021 hardtop MX-5 is $34,100 with no upgrades, which is generally following inflation. Basically there were cheapish sports cars. There aren't really any cars like this anymore. The Supra MkV is perhaps a good analog for this. The Supra we all know and love is a 6-cyl, but Toyota does sell a turbo inline 4. Turbo i4 rear-wheel drive coupe, a perfect match up for the S15. It goes for $43,090, with no upgrade, absolutely bone stock, and that's MSRP. It's $10,500 more than the a spec'd Silvia would be in todays money. The 6-cyl turbo is $51,090 for the stock version, which is actually a better price than the MkIV turbo, which was $40,500 in 1998 (or about $66,000 in 2021). This is the point, you have NA cars like the MX-5 and 86/BRZ at $30-35k, then you have a single 4-cyl turbo option at $43k, and then you get into the 6-cyl which is the Supra at $51k, and the GT-R at $114k (whereas an R33 cost $77k new, in 2021 money). Even if you get a BRZ and try to turbo it, you're going to end up having to do a lot more work to get it turbo'd as the standard FA20 is not really built for this. It can be done, but it will cost, and you can't run high boost without changing some internals to allow for this. It's important to note that the FA20DIT in the WRX is quite different than the standard FA20, and even it has well documented problems with con-rods when it's pushed, and by problems I mean punching holes in the engine kinda problems. Conversely, for the same price, in 2021 cash, you could get yourself a B package Spec-R S15, factory turbo'd, and well suited for modding and tunning.

I want a Toyota century because of the fancy look to it. It was so fancy that only like three people were certified to paint the car in the entire company. Some crazy stuff to make it look great.
I’m so tempted to just go there and bid on any of them 😂😂
Let’s go 😂🔥
the marks on the century's fenders might have been for flags
They’re the original position for the wing mirrors on those cars. A previous owner must have moved the mirrors to the more common (and useful) position on the door/A-pillar.
That century with straight pipes and nice big rims would be fire 🔥
I could watch this stuff ALL DAY, (and tomorrow as well.) Thank you for uploading!
Hey mate, cool video, I've also been to a few of the USS auctions in person, amazing experience. Just wanted to point out something to viewers not familiar with grading system:
At 3:40 you mention your surprise that it got a "3" versus an "R" So the R grade just means it's been "repaired" from an accident of some sort, could be big, could be minor. R grades can sometimes be in bad shape, but I've seen plenty of R grades that are even better than many "4" grades. You are right that usually with body panels being replaced it should be considered "R," but if it has been done just as modification and not due to an accident, it will usually not get the R grade.
The "3" grade is pretty much the lowest grade you can get before you get into the problem grades (1, 2, ***), which are grades that are only handed to non-running or parts vehicles. So 3 means it could have been in an accident but not fully repaired, or it could mean in generally poor shape but still running and driving. I'd usually steer clear from them, as I've purchased 3 grades prior but they cost me so much to restore I could have gotten a nice 3.5 or great 4 instead for the money.
TLDR; R grades doesn't necessarily mean a bad grade, but 3 does. I would definitely opt for a clean car with an "R" grade vs. a poor condition 3 grade.
I also agree that some of the grades seem off and inspectors may be paid off. Last week a 300ZX went up for sale with some rust and bad paint in multiple spots, it seemed to me that it should have received a 3.5, that 4 grade made me really suspicious...
I always thought a grade 3 car is either a grade R or just in poor condition as I've seen cars that have been through different auctions and with those grades swapped. As for grade R, I'd usually avoid them but grade RA cars can be pretty good. The best place to look for in auction sheet is the body report, as replaced panels are marked with "XX", if the whole front end has been replaced, it's usually a red flag, if only the hood is replaced, I wouldn't think much of it.
The Supra had an blown engine which was replaced with the aristo engine
15:20 that looks exactly like Adam LZ’s
The only reason I watch Sammit is cuz of the auctions. An auction video makes my day
Congratulations on 400k!
You do know they have things called welders, and patch panels to fix those areas, cars aren't just written off because of a little bit of rust that can be repaired
He has to try to look like an expert on camera. I'd probably wouldn't trust his option on most things.
The half ass repaint in the engine bay was probably because they didn't want to remove everything to paint. A little surface rust is pretty normal on a car this old
@@Chocolate_dragon lol, yea, he's a driver only, not a sheetmetal guy but he's a lot better than some on youtube. whats with this new trend of calling obviously, LHD, usdm cars like the 240sx a jdm car? lol!

that stagea rust was not even bad thats like a 2hour job fix if it isnt rusted out in the firewall or anywhere else in hidden in the chassy which i doubt
Every time I watch a Japanese auction house video I get depressed because I get reminded about the crazy prices of the cars I wanted...
A ca18det 180sx was my first car back when I was 18, like 18 years ago when imports where everywhere in Australia! Was an amazing time to grow up with awesome cars everywhere and affordable too!
Same, I loved that little 180sx, I got mine in 1997/8. Not too many imports on the road back then, folk thought it was an RX7!
Yeah after the 180sx my next car was a FC RX7, all my mates had them we were like a rotor crew good times! Bought it uncomplienced for like $5,000 off an importer, on road was like $8,000 such a fun car for the money, when it was running ha ha
I don’t nowhere near have enough money yet.. but I’m hoping to import from Japan eventually - however the panic of being scammed/ripped off is always on my mind 😳

I agree, he is too scared of a little rust on the rear wings, it is like a 1 day job to weld in new wheel arches and I would thowin a couple of new rockers to be sure.
for the next auction you go to, could you try to find a left hand drive JDM spec E30? maybe give some info about it too as most people don’t know at them even existing
I bought the 180 4 mins in today. I think you’ve your understanding of the grading wrong. Especially on the Chaser 3 mins in.
R grade is recorded repair history. 3 is below average condition. You’ll find cars with repair history (and detailed in the auction sheet things like inner wing repair, rear panel repair, radiator support replacement) on non R grade cars because they haven’t had an officially recorded accident.
I love that he still does those cute Lil shoes digs lol.if you know you know
At 31:44 you point out how the old Soarers (Z20) used to be able to be bought for $500... that was probably a while back, around 5 years ago you could still by a clean one for about $5k. But the one you're pointing out isn't a normal Z20 Soarer, it's a 1/500 Aerocabin model. And that one was in really nice shape, I know, because I almost bought it. I have one as well, but mine was a 3 grade and it still cost me a pretty penny. Clean ones are selling for $20-25k at auction and I've seen one sell at auction here in the U.S for $55k a couple months ago (at Barret Jackson auction).

One of my first cars might actually ve an 87 Mazda rx7 that needs a break line replacement, not to shabby for something that old and stock, guy was asking 8 grand. Downside is I am up north so the thing will sit in the garage for a few months during the dry season, even when i don't exactly have to worry about salt during the wet seasons ill still probably clean the thing every few days to keep it in top shape.
The Supra had a VVTI motor (blue cover) which was fitted to the facelift Supra’s - 97 onwards IIRC. My friend has a JDM 97 VVTI facelift here in the UK. Although that one was definitely an Aristo motor as the plate said GE not GTE
17:30 that "corrosion " happens when the car is parted up. It happened to my car when I parted it up. (My country has no snow)
(Sam focuses on V-Spec II Nur, here's Olive like, 'Hey, B210 Sunny! hatch!" I was looking at that bein like, 'Yeah, that could make me happier than the GTR would.' :) There's definitely a bubble involved here, though. Even so, if I were buying for me I wouldn't care so much about authenticity, so I kinda liked some of those side-lot cars. (I'd have looked hard under that white Sileghty with the atrocious steering wheel. That coulda been my pick. (Even the kind of excessive tail didn't even look *bad* to me. Not what I'd choose and it's probably go, but I usually hate anything that big and I didn't. :) )

That rust isn’t as bad as the ones we have in Australia and they’re kicking about still.
Now if you looked at the chassis rails, pillars and firewall and saw anything more than surface rust, I’d probably agree with you but the rust you showed us was not so bad and easily fixed.
Also bonnets are replaceable or remove it and repair it easy as.
