Thank you father and son team. You just saved us from replacing this toilet. If you're still leaking even after replacing the gasket, this is what I did to fix mine. I doubled the big blue gasket with the old one which I popped (right into my face) with a utility knife and I also put lithium grease lying around the smaller red gasket, any grease would do i think, as suggested by the video petroleum jelly might work too. Both those suggestions sealed the deal for me, all thanks to this video and others who commented. And there's more ... if your flush just doesn't have enough umph on these champion 4's like mind did right from the store... if you extend the tube that fills it by buying a 1" pvc coupling (might need to shave off to fit) for a couple cents, that made the flush whatever is in there completely. In another video which i can't find atm.
    happy flushing!

I may have to try this method. I replaced the rubber ring and I’m still getting leakage. It’s causing my water bill to go up quite a bit. Did you put grease between the rubber ring and top part of the flusher, or did you just double up on the rubber rings?

thank you for posting. that flexible blue gasket is 2-sided. i just removed the gasket, flipped it over, reinstalled gasket, & reassembled. leak problem solved. i would not recommend petroleum jelly for lubricting the o-ring & threads. pj can degrade the o-ring and some plastics. silicone grease would be recommended.

Great video for very annoying slight toilet running. Couldn't figure it out on my own due to funky flush valve setup , instead of traditional flapper. Took valve off, it still looked good. Reinstalled per video. Now there is no ripple and refill, just golden silence! Videos like these are what makes youtube great!

Your second video seems to have solved it. A.S. (I could come up with some other meaning) should pay you for this. It is beyond comprehension how they designed this toilet where you have to remove the tank to change the valve - and why they can’t design a gasket that doesn’t get bubbles. Good thing they’re not involved with the in’s Space Station! THANKS A MILLION!

I took a razor blade and sliced the bubble from the end, relieving the bubble. It has been a few days and the toilet has not flushed on it's own. I bought 3 of these toilets for my 3 bathrooms and they have been installed for less than 2 years. This should not happen to brand new toilets. American Standard should rectify this situation and give replacement parts for free. They can tell what years the toilets are by the bar codes and model numbers. I had the old toilets removed because of stains and have had them for over 20 years and never had any problems. Really disappointed with American Standard.

The reality of the whole situation is it's a piss poor design, it's a garbage design and American standard should be ashamed of themselves for selling this to the public. I've had that particular toilet for about 3 years and replace that gasket at least seven times. I called customer service one time and they sent a six gaskets, that in itself tells you they know about the problem and I've used them all.To prolong the inevitable change what I do is I'll seal it with a little bit of petroleum jelly and that'll keep it going a little longer but at least once or twice a year you have to change it.

The stem that you say will not come out, It will come out if the stem is turned1/4 turn. If that stem gets turned the 1/4 turn while unthreading the top plastic nut the stem will drop down into the flush channel and can not be removed, then the whole system needs replacement. Experience is speaking!

Thank you for the helpful video. My water bill should go down because I stopped the "ghost flushing" on two toilets, using a needle to drain the bumps. Note: I found additional, unseen bumps, to drain, when running my finger tips over both sides. Going on day four, no "ghost flushing". My wife was quite impressed and satisfied. I'm going to buy two replacement kits, from Home Depot, and keep them handy. As a retired military, I get a discount, so it works out for me to buy local. I subscribed.

IMHO it's a bad design. Ours started leaking for no apparent reason, gasket is new, clam shell seated properly and the red o ring is fine. I'm cutting bait and switching to the Korky retrofit kit. Why would anyone design a multi-piece, multi-seal flapper valve? K.I.S.S.....

This might be a dumb question...BUT...what is the purpose of replacing a faulty AS OEM part with the same part, if there's a flaw in the design? I bought 2 brand new toilets and both started phantom flushing 6 months after install. Why in the world would I want the same OEM part that's causing the current problem? Wouldn't we possibly have better luck with an aftermarket part?

I have two commodes and the other one has a cracked tank and needs replaced I will cannibalize the parts off of it because a replacement tank is just as much as a new commode. I may go with a different brand.

I bought the OG Champion 4 parts, replaced the gasket and there is an additional piece in the tube going into the bowl that is cracked...haven't seen it in any videos or parts lists. It is plastic, should I just take it out?

For a temporary fix while you wait for the replacement gasket to be delivered, you can remove the current one and if you puncture the bubbles they will drain and the gasket will be able to seal.

Another trick is to flip the existing blue washer over and reinstall it. I had a small leak due to the blue washer slightly warped, but it worked perfectly by just flipping it over. That was a year ago and still no leaks. I bought a new washer but will not install until I need it.

Wow. I had a plumber come out 3 times to try and fix our toilet. He suggested finally that we get a new one and start over. WHAT? It's only a year old. ANYWAY, I decided to check out the solution online. I watched this video and guess what? The two parts of the flapper were NOT connected!!!! I snapped them together and tightened the screw and it no longer leaks.
This one video saved us hundreds of dollars !! And, I might just take on a new profession! LOL
THANK YOU SO MUCH -- extremely helpful!

The main problem of the running toilet is the carbonates of water deposit in the flapper gasket, it is straightforward, there is no need to change the flapper, clean the carbonate deposits on the flapper's silicon gasket, and at the edges of the round pipe where this gasket rests. This guy is just wasting your money for replacing all the stuff.

Poor design. Take the tank off & put a standard (not this type) flapper type flush valve in it. Then, replace with a new 3 dollar flapper every 10 years or so, it takes a few seconds for that type.

I can't thank you enough for this video! I watched it on Tuesday and you made it look so easy I decided to try to fix it myself. I used the link provided and ordered the American Standard part from Amazon (it was only $7) It was delivered today (Thurs) and it only took about 3 minutes to make the repair. No more "ghost flushing". Everything went exactly as you showed it. Thanks again. I am sure you saved me several hundred dollars. A plumber would have probably replaced all the innards if not the entire commode.

Thank you for this video. I was able to fix part of the problem by lowering the water level which helped a LOT, but it would still self-flush occasionally. I found your video and was able to find the part locally at Home Depot. It was so easy to replace the part thanks to your video. Now to order and fix the other American Standard toilet!

As happened to others, my toilet was still ghost flushing after I replaced the gasket and small "o" ring. Luckily, with this video you help me fix the problem (by aligning the notches). Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

I have also purchased the champion model at the end of August 2022. It has started leaking and the flapper thing would not sit down in the spot it should be. I watched both your videos on this, Am.Std. seems to have changed the design a bit. I turn off water, unhook the chain and found the it was unscrewed (top green and bottom black) there is no plastic screw thing at the top or gasket. Mine is one piece and screws into the black non-removeable part. Didn't check to see if any notches in the plastic, screwed it together and it works great, no more leaks every 30-45 seconds. Thanks for your tips and my wife's keen vision.

I had replaced the gasket once before, no problems, the second time I changed the gaket it continued to leak so I came back on line and saw this second video, I didn't know you had to line up those four indentations so I took my gasket apart, aligned the indents and voila' it now works properly. THANKS, btw this is one of the best instructional videos I have ever watched, well done!
