p.s. The Korky is about twice the price of the AS.
Ok so mine does not have the screw on top. Any idea how to change the gasket? Home depot champion crap. thanks
Those leak too. I purchase them in batches of 4. Good for a couple years, so far.
Thank you father and son team. You just saved us from replacing this toilet. If you're still leaking even after replacing the gasket, this is what I did to fix mine. I doubled the big blue gasket with the old one which I popped (right into my face) with a utility knife and I also put lithium grease lying around the smaller red gasket, any grease would do i think, as suggested by the video petroleum jelly might work too. Both those suggestions sealed the deal for me, all thanks to this video and others who commented. And there's more ... if your flush just doesn't have enough umph on these champion 4's like mind did right from the store... if you extend the tube that fills it by buying a 1" pvc coupling (might need to shave off to fit) for a couple cents, that made the flush whatever is in there completely. In another video which i can't find atm.
happy flushing!
I may have to try this method. I replaced the rubber ring and I’m still getting leakage. It’s causing my water bill to go up quite a bit. Did you put grease between the rubber ring and top part of the flusher, or did you just double up on the rubber rings?
thank you for posting. that flexible blue gasket is 2-sided. i just removed the gasket, flipped it over, reinstalled gasket, & reassembled. leak problem solved. i would not recommend petroleum jelly for lubricting the o-ring & threads. pj can degrade the o-ring and some plastics. silicone grease would be recommended.
Just want to say thank you for this video!!! I’ve been breaking my head trying to fix our toilet and thanks to you, i was able to!!
I just replaced the gasket and it still ghost flushes. It did the same thing about a year and a half ago when I changed the gasket. I made sure everything is aligned right. I am at a loss as this should be such a simple fix. I've replaced many toilet parts over the years and never had a problem. Thanks, Mike
Same for me. This toilet is so annoying
I replaced my gaskets, aligned the notches, and it is better, but I can still detect a very slight seep with food dye in tank. So annoying!!
Yeah this got me! After a couple choice words i took it back apart and saw what i did wrong. Thanks for the link too!
The alignment of the slots was the fix! Thanks.
Will this gasket issue cause it to run periodically?
Your second video seems to have solved it. A.S. (I could come up with some other meaning) should pay you for this. It is beyond comprehension how they designed this toilet where you have to remove the tank to change the valve - and why they can’t design a gasket that doesn’t get bubbles. Good thing they’re not involved with the in’s Space Station! THANKS A MILLION!
I think my issue is screwing in the top black part. It clicks but doesn't seem to connect. When I fill with water and flush, this top piece just comes out...stripped thread?
I've replaced that whole assembly with American standard updated replacement and my toilet still leaks and runs.
I took a razor blade and sliced the bubble from the end, relieving the bubble. It has been a few days and the toilet has not flushed on it's own. I bought 3 of these toilets for my 3 bathrooms and they have been installed for less than 2 years. This should not happen to brand new toilets. American Standard should rectify this situation and give replacement parts for free. They can tell what years the toilets are by the bar codes and model numbers. I had the old toilets removed because of stains and have had them for over 20 years and never had any problems. Really disappointed with American Standard.
SO SORRY I BOUGHT YHIS TOILET
Thank you for this video. I am a 70 year old single woman. Because of your excellent video I was able to order the correct replacement and installed it myself. You saved me money and gave me the confidence to do it myself. Thank you
I am disappointed with the American standard leaking I changed the gasket at least 3 times and it still leaks I will try your technique with the gaskets also the flus handle is hard to push down what toilet do you recommend it has to be high like the American standard thanks for the video
You are so welcome!
@@checkitout2468 you ignored the guys question above. who is going to donate to your patreon for bad videos
@@chrismathewsjr yeah, so sorry. Not intentionally ignoring anyone however my channel’s to the point now where I get tens of thousands of views a day and you can imagine how many comments. Very hard to keep up with. Thank you for your understanding. Doing my best, I promise! Also, I’m a full-time six grade teacher. And a father of three. Doing my best.
I have 2 of these toilets. Both where ghost flushing. In addition to following this video, squeeze the shells together while screwing the top button in. No more leaking.
what do you mean squeeze the shells together? I just replaced the gasket and it still ghost flushes. It did the same thing about a year and a half ago when I changed the gasket. Everything is lined up right. Thanks, Mike
The reality of the whole situation is it's a piss poor design, it's a garbage design and American standard should be ashamed of themselves for selling this to the public. I've had that particular toilet for about 3 years and replace that gasket at least seven times. I called customer service one time and they sent a six gaskets, that in itself tells you they know about the problem and I've used them all.To prolong the inevitable change what I do is I'll seal it with a little bit of petroleum jelly and that'll keep it going a little longer but at least once or twice a year you have to change it.
Thank you a MILLION for this second video!! I did the first steps but definitely did not have the green clams aligned correctly, misleading me to believe that I had a problem much worse. What a relief after this step worked. 😅 Thank you again!
Thank you sir, this just saved me my literal sanity
American Standard 4215A (Champion 4)
"ALIGN THE NOTCHES" !!!! (that's key) Works with either brand!!
Thank you so much for your input!
I was about to replace the fill valve after I replaced the flapper...!
🙏🙏🙏
Thanks to you and your video, i have no stress now! 👍
I changed mine with the American Standard valve and still leaks? Water level slowly drops.
Thanks for the help man. Lining up the top piece of the green clamshell with the tabs on the lower green piece saved my day 👍
I had no idea about the notches either. Hopefully this fixes my issue
Great video for very annoying slight toilet running. Couldn't figure it out on my own due to funky flush valve setup , instead of traditional flapper. Took valve off, it still looked good. Reinstalled per video. Now there is no ripple and refill, just golden silence! Videos like these are what makes youtube great!
Thank you, that is exactly what I needed to know. I had everything right except those notches.
Them bubbles are usually filled with some kind of fluid. you can also just poke a needle hole it it and let the fluid out until its flat again and reuse it.
I just did that after watching this video. Working pretty well so far. It’s obviously only temporary, but will buy time if you can’t go out and get a new gasket. Thanks to the vid creator for bringing the issue to our attention!
Thanks a lot! It was ghost flushing more after I replaced the gaskets. I’m glad you posted this video to align the notches. Fixed the problem!
You’re welcome 👍 Happy to help!
You are very helpful brother I appreciate you taking your time to show us how to fix leaky toilet and I never don't know why I didn't think to check the green things and see if they were lining up but that was my problem all along so I appreciate it again brother and good luck and may God bless you
Changed the seal but was leaking even more than before, I thought the whole assembly was cracked or something, I was ready to change the whole assembly but after seeing your video and "aligning the notches of the clamshell" fixed it right away. It's working great again. A million thanks!
Thank you so much for the notch advice, solved my leaking issue.
YOU CAN ALSO GET A RAZOR BLADE AND POKE THE BUBBLES AND THEY WILL POP LEAVING YOU A LOT BETTER OF A SEAL UNTIL YOU GET THE BETTER REPLACEMENT GASKETS. I did it and it worked.
New gasket helped, but didn't solve a slow leak. In frustration, I bought a second gasket and now there are TWO gaskets where just the one should be. PROBLEM SOLVED!!!!!!!!!!!!
this is some stupid design...but thumbs up for the explanation!
Thank you & thanks for the kind comment!👍😎
Great video!! Saved me a huge amount of time. Thank you for the quality video and step by step instructions.
I thought the Champion 4 was an excellent toilet until I read all of the negative reviews stating that they leak and will need to have parts replaced about every 8 months. Not happening. So glad I didn't waste my money on this thing. Unfortunately, I will need to continue looking for a better toilet. Any suggestions?
Get anything made by Toto. I bought a Toto and this American Standard at the same time for 2 bathrooms 4 years ago. The Toto stays cleaner and has required ZERO gasket maintenance. I have to replace this gasket in the American Standard every 6 months....a total pain in the neck. Toto (Japanese company) has a great reputation, check their reviews.
Glacier Bay (Home Depot) are good toilets and use standard toilet parts.
The stem that you say will not come out, It will come out if the stem is turned1/4 turn. If that stem gets turned the 1/4 turn while unthreading the top plastic nut the stem will drop down into the flush channel and can not be removed, then the whole system needs replacement. Experience is speaking!
Dude. I was about to give up on my running toilet. I replaced the gasket with an aftermarket and that didn’t work. Replaced with an OEM and still leaking. Found this video and bingo.. I just didn’t have the notches lined up. Thank you for posting.
Thanks for posting this. I followed your first video and still had the leak. This fixed it. I really appreciate you making these videos.
Thanks for your video! ... TWO THINGS I WANT TO MENTION. ... 1) Blisters were on only one side for mine. So, I flopped it over and it stopped leaking!!! I have one on order too. …….. 2) In our litigious society I'm surprised a lawyer isn't filing a class action lawsuit against American Standard. If someone wants to create a web site to acquire names, then sign me up!!!
BREAKING NEWS as of April 2022 !! American Standard will send out complete toilet bowl part for complete overhaul due to a recall on the Champion toilet. I have experienced same chronic issue in the past and recently called American Standard (AM) on it. Kind lady said AM recognized issue and had to redesign part and issue a recall to correct. They sent me free of charge EVERYTHING inside toilet tank for free.
Thank you, purchased the fluidmaster 510A-001 ant the champion 4 ghost flushing continued.. I will try the oem gasket. I have 4 of these toilets in rentals and I ABSOLUTELY will be getting on the class action suit against American Standard parent company and every Champion 4 owner should as well.
Check It Out !!!
Thank you for the helpful video. My water bill should go down because I stopped the "ghost flushing" on two toilets, using a needle to drain the bumps. Note: I found additional, unseen bumps, to drain, when running my finger tips over both sides. Going on day four, no "ghost flushing". My wife was quite impressed and satisfied. I'm going to buy two replacement kits, from Home Depot, and keep them handy. As a retired military, I get a discount, so it works out for me to buy local. I subscribed.
IMHO it's a bad design. Ours started leaking for no apparent reason, gasket is new, clam shell seated properly and the red o ring is fine. I'm cutting bait and switching to the Korky retrofit kit. Why would anyone design a multi-piece, multi-seal flapper valve? K.I.S.S.....
This might be a dumb question...BUT...what is the purpose of replacing a faulty AS OEM part with the same part, if there's a flaw in the design? I bought 2 brand new toilets and both started phantom flushing 6 months after install. Why in the world would I want the same OEM part that's causing the current problem? Wouldn't we possibly have better luck with an aftermarket part?
One year ago price was $7 via the Amazon link per comments below. Today 9/30/2023 is $17.58 Thank you Joe Biden!!!!
According to American Standard this morning, the gasket Amazon is selling is not the most up to date version, so you might be better off calling AS directly. They sent me two (I have 2 toilets that leak) for free. They asked me if I had receipt from Lowe’s for the toilet purchase 3 years ago and I said no. No hassle
I was on my last try before ripping this toilet out and never buying an American Standard anything again. Like an almost boomer, I should do what my millennial kids tell me and "you tube" it first lol. Thanks! it worked
Thank you & thanks for the kind comment!👍😎
Just replaced the gasket in my 6-year-old American Standard toilet. I didn't totally understand what you meant when you said the old gasket could have bubbles in it. It looks totally blistered. No wonder it wasn't making a good seal. What in the world happens to that gasket to cause it to blister like that? The great step-by-step instructions and the link to the Amazon gasket set helped out a lot. Thank you so much!
I replaced the gasket and o ring supplied by as still ghost flushed called them back told support didn't fix the problem so they sent me you tube links on cleaning and adjusting fill level. I did both found your how to and while apart checked for tab alignment but my champ is built in 2014 doesn't have the tabs as pictured in your video. I'm waiting to see if cleaning and adjusting fill level makes any difference but I didn't see any build up on the fill valve diaphragm and I did the fill valve flush for debri as well. Any suggestions are welcome!
Dude..... you just saved me a bunch of cussing. Thank you!
I have this toilet (I think) but there is no black gasket on top. My toilets are from Lowe’s 2019-2020. Has anyone else reported this?
Thank you. Who said at 69, you can’t learn new things.
Thank you so much. We were ready to get a new one. This video was great !! Not really happy with design. But hopefully we now have solved the problem. Thanks to you.
I love this video! I paid $200.00 for this toilet, I am not happy about this issue. You and your son made this really easy! Thank You, Thank You!
Maybe it stopped leaking, I probably need to replace everything. The filler valve is clogged which is common in the Florida city water. I still have galvanized pipe and my shower head gets clogged quite often.
I have two commodes and the other one has a cracked tank and needs replaced I will cannibalize the parts off of it because a replacement tank is just as much as a new commode. I may go with a different brand.
I can’t screw off that black thing on top. There are little notch barriers that are preventing me from screwing it off. How do I get passed those because my hands are just burning now. Plus, I don’t want to break it.
Yes!! Me, too! I finally tried poking the bubbles without disassembling, but doubt that will work or last.
Did anyone find a solution? We broke the black part using pliers and it now won't lift out of the clamshell at all
I found on mine I had to unscrew the inside stem and not the top piece, different design.
Hi: I need to just replace the top half of the green clamshell (I've no idea how the original cracked and a piece broke off) I have searched the internet far and wide and can't seem to find such creature. Does anyone know if this top green clamshell is sold separately? Otherwise, I'll have to buy the whole flush system. Thanks.
Plumber here. That cleaning agent in the corner of the tank will void warranty. Theres already chlorine in the water and chlorine eats up the rubber. Call American Standard Kohler Gerber etc and ask them if you don't believe me. And from what ive seen these are just crappy. Replaced the entire flush assembly...2 days later had to replace the toilet
All that black residue in the tank can't be good...should vacuum that out.
Also, you must lead a charmed life, both videos show you placing the tank lid where it could easily be bumped and shatter into pieces.
I bought two of these toilets two years ago. It's a great design and really works but when both of these gaskets leaked inside of two years then American Standard has excellent engineers and puts garbage into their products. Even my old toilets lasted at least 5 years before I had to replace the flapper. What's wrong with American Standard's quality control?
China standard?
@@fixitmann6685 China quality is better than American
i typed "toilet leaking from handle from overfill" and your video shows up, but doesn't address that. please knock it off with search engine optimization.
I assure you I have no search engine optimization with the title you put in. My videos are for the sole purpose of helping others. Not trying to be tricky. I apologize for your frustration. I assume the algorithm is trying to help you but it’s not working. Doing my best, I promise!
Thanks!
That plastic screw is tight as hell, and opening it as a nightmare! Once I gotten unscrewed and replace the blue gasket using the American Standard brand, if you don’t tighten up that black plastic screw, water will scape, so it’s a pain in the neck to find the proper tightening with this piece of crap!
I bought the OG Champion 4 parts, replaced the gasket and there is an additional piece in the tube going into the bowl that is cracked...haven't seen it in any videos or parts lists. It is plastic, should I just take it out?
For a temporary fix while you wait for the replacement gasket to be delivered, you can remove the current one and if you puncture the bubbles they will drain and the gasket will be able to seal.
Another trick is to flip the existing blue washer over and reinstall it. I had a small leak due to the blue washer slightly warped, but it worked perfectly by just flipping it over. That was a year ago and still no leaks. I bought a new washer but will not install until I need it.
Wow. I had a plumber come out 3 times to try and fix our toilet. He suggested finally that we get a new one and start over. WHAT? It's only a year old. ANYWAY, I decided to check out the solution online. I watched this video and guess what? The two parts of the flapper were NOT connected!!!! I snapped them together and tightened the screw and it no longer leaks.
This one video saved us hundreds of dollars !! And, I might just take on a new profession! LOL
THANK YOU SO MUCH -- extremely helpful!
I can't turn the thumbscrew. The little black piece that has to be unscrewed. How do you do that? I would appreciate any help thank you!
Wow this thing had literally kicked my XXX and and even more talented friend of mine thank you so much big help with buy you a beer if I could but we'll have one for you
The main problem of the running toilet is the carbonates of water deposit in the flapper gasket, it is straightforward, there is no need to change the flapper, clean the carbonate deposits on the flapper's silicon gasket, and at the edges of the round pipe where this gasket rests. This guy is just wasting your money for replacing all the stuff.
American standard has been the worse experience in toilets in my entire life, 2 yr old toilet, replaced the gaskets 7 fucking times, and the main plastic housing once already, now im looking into replacing the back of the tank to remove all american standard crap from my life
Thanks for the video! I have replaced the gasket and the little red o ring and also aligned the notches on the green clam shell and it is STILL ghost flushing. Any ideas what to try next?
Mine lasted 2 years. It's that the American Standard? Junk! Should've with toto
I did everything on this video. Still leaks. What else could it be?
Same here!
Poor design. Take the tank off & put a standard (not this type) flapper type flush valve in it. Then, replace with a new 3 dollar flapper every 10 years or so, it takes a few seconds for that type.
It's odd how such burly hands can have such a youthful voice.
Good informative video though
I can't thank you enough for this video! I watched it on Tuesday and you made it look so easy I decided to try to fix it myself. I used the link provided and ordered the American Standard part from Amazon (it was only $7) It was delivered today (Thurs) and it only took about 3 minutes to make the repair. No more "ghost flushing". Everything went exactly as you showed it. Thanks again. I am sure you saved me several hundred dollars. A plumber would have probably replaced all the innards if not the entire commode.
Thank you for this video. I was able to fix part of the problem by lowering the water level which helped a LOT, but it would still self-flush occasionally. I found your video and was able to find the part locally at Home Depot. It was so easy to replace the part thanks to your video. Now to order and fix the other American Standard toilet!
Sometimes you might be able to flip the gasket over and use it .
Mine doesn’t seem to have a black part that unscrews. The top clam shell appears to be one piece. Suggestions?
Thanking sooooo much!! This worked! Lining up the notches - why is this so difficult?!
Thank you, Check it Out! Definitely needed to watch both videos to get the leak-free result!
I bought my toilet in May and the green part is all one piece there is no little black turning key….
Piece of garbage. We've replaced the gasket 3x. Kohler toilet in now!
Wish I had seen this first. Paid a plumber $$ to fix the new blue valve!!@
Thank you! I missed this alignment step when I replaced gasket
Thank you, I fixed mine by flipping the gasket upside down.
As happened to others, my toilet was still ghost flushing after I replaced the gasket and small "o" ring. Luckily, with this video you help me fix the problem (by aligning the notches). Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
This toilet is a piece of junk. I have one, and have to replace the gaskets constantly.
I replaced the gaskets and the phantom flushing was more prevalent. This fixed it. Thank you!
Your second video is best. Now, no ghosting for 3 days …and counting!
I have also purchased the champion model at the end of August 2022. It has started leaking and the flapper thing would not sit down in the spot it should be. I watched both your videos on this, Am.Std. seems to have changed the design a bit. I turn off water, unhook the chain and found the it was unscrewed (top green and bottom black) there is no plastic screw thing at the top or gasket. Mine is one piece and screws into the black non-removeable part. Didn't check to see if any notches in the plastic, screwed it together and it works great, no more leaks every 30-45 seconds. Thanks for your tips and my wife's keen vision.
You’re welcome! Thank you for the kind comment!👍😎
I had replaced the gasket once before, no problems, the second time I changed the gaket it continued to leak so I came back on line and saw this second video, I didn't know you had to line up those four indentations so I took my gasket apart, aligned the indents and voila' it now works properly. THANKS, btw this is one of the best instructional videos I have ever watched, well done!
Seems like this is reason to never buy A American Standard toilet ever again.
Hey Thanks for this Follow up video, this might be my problem, I didn’t know the top comes off,I’ll check this in the morning,
Thank you & thanks for the kind comment!👍😎
My gasket is not like that, it is solid and I can't remove it, so what can I do.
Dumb question, but I am having a hard time getting the little black piece that screws out--is it just something to twist by force? I am a bit worried about snapping the plastic.
It’s a good question. As they age those little black nuts can break. With that said you’ll need to use a certain amount of force counter clockwise to loosen it.
I bought 3 different gaskets, but didn't realize they weren't aligned properly. Thanks for the extremely helpful video!
Where can I get that white piece on the black hose so it does not go so far down in the tube?
There's NOTHING on Amazon that's real
Goodness...I have been dealing with this issue for so long. Also replaced so many gaskets, even doubled it up with no success. I was convinced the toilet just sucked. Can't believe I overlooked something so simple. Issue fixed..Thank you so much!
