- In this video, we show you How to Change a Toilet Flapper and Fix a running toilet. Usually when you have the problem where your toilet keeps running, or your toilet keeps flushing, or your toilet keeps making noise like a half flush, it is because your toilet flapper is leaking, and that toilet flapper needs to be replaced. Many people suffer from this needed toilet repair, where the toilet flushes on its own and this video will teach you how to fix a runny toilet be removing the old flapper and installing a new toilet flapper. It does not matter whether you have a Kohler flapper or an American Standard flapper, it's best to measure your toilet flush valve opening, the round hole under your toilet flapper, and usually it is 2" or 3", so it is also helpful to bring the toilet flapper with you to Home Depot.

in this video, we'll also show you what to expect and what you'll see while shopping for a new toilet flapper down the toilet plumbing aisle in Home Depot.
How to install toilet flapper
to install a new toilet flapper, turn off the water and flush the water to empty out as much water from the toilet tank as possible. The old toilet flapper at the bottom of the toilet tank can now be removed by twisting both hinged ends of the rubber toilet flapper around the retaining hooks on the white plastic pole at the bottom of the toilet tank. You'll see the old toilet flapper is likely to be slimy and possibly lost its shape or become somewhat limp so it loses the 100% toilet flapper seal, which is why water was leaking from the toilet tank into the toilet bowl, and causing the toilet flushing by itself.
Don't forget to remove the old flapper chain of the flush lever as well. The new toilet flapper comes with a new chain.Congratulations, you now know how to fix toilet flappers, and this completes your toilet repair, and you saved $100 or more on hiring a plumber to repair your toilet. - Навчання та стиль

For a GIRL, your instructions were EXCELLENT. I measured, went to the store bought the perfect replacement and come home, followed your instructions, and in 5 minutes my problem was solved...Thank you very much.
Why would you call him a girl?🙃

Before removing chain from lever, remember which hole the chain clipped into.

Great point. 😘 I reverse engineer everything, so I did that by chance. I don't even want to think about the headache it would have been if I hadn't done that.
Ya good point, I just had to move mine 3 times!
I’m 76 years old (woman):and am tired of calling my nephew to fix things, although he is great about it. I’m going to try this myself! Thank you - wish me luck!
Did it work for you
Why are you a Grandma?
Thank for teaching me how to fix my toilet i was wondering why my water bill was so high. Your a life saver 😁
Glad I could help!
Good demonstration. You solve me a problem that I have dealing with for last 6 months and now it becomes a DIY.
Awesome, glad to help out Samuel!
Renting my first apartment and our toilet runs like every 2 min like this. Thank you for the video🙏
Thanks for the video! Just fixed my running toilet for the first time by myself thanks to the help
very good video but my blue flapper is hard plastic and not as plyable and i dont see how to remove it as easily unless i cut it off with like a pair of sidecutters and hopefully not break the overfill tube. how else am i supposed to remove my stubborn hard plastic flapper?
I have had to use pliers to flip the side loops up over post at the bottom to liberate them.
I believe that when the flapper says universal it’s universal in its size. There are several types of flappers for different toilets and the universal would work as long as it’s the same size as the original.
Yes, that makes sense!
What if your toilet is an older model and the flapper has a plastic holder needed. Can it be replaced with a newer type of flapper?
I encountered this last week at my niece's house, and problem is the flappers at Home depot don't have the rigid plastic support piece, so you try a regular flapper and it is too flexible and shuts down before the water can flush out of the tank, giving an incomplete flush. I told here for now, just hold down the handle until it flushes, and we need to get a new toilet, I prefer the American standard Champion Toilet, about $229.
As as a single mom that needs to learn diy now to save money, you are a life saver!
Who needs a handyman when you have UA-cam, right?
@@jeffostroff I just always worry I’ll break something even worse than before haha
Zero confidence! Lol
My flapper doesn't seem to be removable, there is no way to unhook the side arms (it's hard plastic that doesn't slide out)
I use pliers on those tough ones, to rotate the rubber ears of the flapper up and off the hooks
Great video. Very well explained and demonstrated. Thanks. Subscribed and look forward to checking out some of your other content.
Welcome aboard!
Great video full of helpful tips, installation was exactly as described!

Can you do a video on what are the best toilet brands say for maintenance over a life time
Sounds like a good idea!
Thanks excellent directions, I am 58 year old woman that hates asking for help.
thank you! such an easy fix for my toilet
Great to hear!
Thank you I was having trouble removing flapper, you was identical to mine. Thanks
I don’t think the flapper in this toilet is the original one so I guess I would measure it
Always a good idea to measure first
Thank you so much!! Simple or not, I def needed help even getting the courage to do stuff like this I normally do not handle and your video was so helpful. Just wanted to leave a word of thanks!
Thank you! I feel like Bob the Builder now because i just fixed my running toilet which my handyman would’ve charged me $100 to fix!
That's why we do this, to save you money!
I got a problem the flapper it too hard to take off, I'll break the pivots if I try. Do I cut it?
I tell you sometimes those things are a real pain to get off and I feel like I'm gonna kill my fingers especially now that they're wet from the water and they're more sensitive. When I have done sometimes is get a small pair of pliers and just gently stretch out that little rubber eye that holds it onto that little post at the bottom and just twist it upward to get it off of the post but be very gentle not to break that plastic
Great video and very informative. I do have a quick question. My white flapper has a chain that inserts inside a round white plastic float that is probably 1-1.5 inches in diameter. The chain continues through the white apparatus until it hooks onto the black arm that is depicted in your video. Will this still work if we use the one depicted in your video or do I need to purchase the one with that white plastic float? I appreciate any advice you can offer. Thanks in advance.
I came here MAINLY to see how to detach and attach the RED flapper (the part from 4:17) , but then all of sudden you start talking and advertising about your videos . also you did not show clearly how to undo the red flapper and how to attach it again ( 4:17 ) ( i mean your left arm was blocking what you are doing ) ...... bummer ....Now i have to look for another video
This help me a lot my tank was doing this I started looking on UA-cam and I found your video I definitely will continue watching you great video thanks
I noticed my water bill went up the last few months and checked all around for leaks. One of our 3 toilets had this issue and I didn't find it until recently. It can cost you $100 a month in needless water usage, so check this if you ever see a spike.
I tried installing a new flapper but it “bends” downward instead of closing flat (to form a tight seal). Any idea what’s going on?
Thank you!!! First time here & your tutorial just walked me thru my flapper change!!! ❤️
Fantastic Kim!
Same here! Great video and very easy to follow. Thank you!
When you flushed at the end the flapper closed really fast…..doesn’t seem like a full flush. My toilet is currently having that problem.
Good video on replacing flapper. Thanks for sharing new friend 💜
Awesome, glad you liked it, hope it helps to solve your toilet problem! this is one of the most common home problems, and so many friends' houses that I visited the last 2 months had this problem.
Thanks Jeff!!! Great video and so easy to do!!! The last time I paid a plumber $50 to do this!!
That is awesome! I'm surprised they did it that cheap. I can't get any plumber to show up for under $100.
Jennifer Tombs you got ripped off!
@@jafallica
She called the plumber.
He didn't call her.
$50 for a guy to come to your house and fix a problem isn't getting ripped off.
He' got $100 grand invested in his truck and parts.
I am not a plumber.
But I would not drive my truck to a customer's house and fix a problem for less than $200.
How the hell would I keep a roof over my family's s head for less?
You are in need of basic math skills.
How do you turn the water off in the toilet?
The water supply line coming out of the wall that connects to the hose that leads up to your toilet has a valve on it. You turn off that valve in that cuts off the water supply to the toilet
Thank you for this. The last time the plumber came to fix this for me, it was $200 so I can only imagine what it would cost now.
Could a dripping sound also mean your flapper needs to be replaced?
That is hard to say you would really have to narrow down to see where the dripping sound is coming from. It could also be coming from for example The top of the flush valve But either way the toilet should not make a sound or normal conditions it should not be a drip or any kind of gurgling the gurgling or any air or anything
@@jeffostroff okay I’m going to start with the flapper, thank you!
Don’t forget some times you need to cut off a ring out the flapper.where the two clips are located to clamp the flapper 👌
Starship Enterprise The Next Generation NCC-1701D
Thise little side arms on the overfill valve broke. Does mean you have to replace the whole kit and disassemble the toilet into 2 pieces?
Thank you! A plumber would have told me in need a new toilet! Saved me big bucks!
You are welcome!
Ok BIG TEXAS THANKS JEFF!! But what if my right lil hook thing is too close to the tank wall...they must hv put the flapper on then cemented it with glue (smh...damn plumbers) #BlessingsFrmSanAngeloTx
Try to bend it
Thanks for sharing your expertise on how to fix the flapper. This is my first time and will try to fix it myself and will let you know how it goes. TX and really appreciate and looking forward to your helpful UA-cam videos.
This is great ... I’m having the same problem with it flushing itself every so often ... I had it fixed a year and a half ago by a plumber but I think I could fix it myself after this ... thank you. Do you flush the toilet after you’ve turned the water off to empty the tank?
Yes, I try to get water as low as possible
@@jeffostroff thank you! Thank you! I did it! Saved myself $200!
Yes, after you turn off the water valve you flush the tank to empty the water already in it.
What if you are having problems removing the old flapper?
How could you have problems, just peel the rubber around off the l-shaped post, but be careful not to crack it.
Great video, but trying to figure out the tension of the chain can be frustrating
You got that right
Nothing worse than a good crapper with a bad flapper.
One side is easy. And one side is flush with the tank. It's a major production to get the side flush with the tank off. There's no room to get that arm on. Why is everything a big pain in the arse?
these are made for rapid assembly at the factory.
Thank you! SUBSCRIBED...and I will be making this plumbing repair by myself, without the plumber!
Glad to help
Why do Americans use a ‘flapper’ and not siphoning action like the rest of the world? Even more so what happens when you don’t have an over flow? That water is going to piss out everywhere
You won't get an overflow from the tank at least because the water will go into the overflow pipe.
Thanks. Wish i would have watched this before I bought the wrong size.
At least now you know for the next time!
Hello. Thanks for taking the time to make this great video. I can't seem to get the flapper off the pins (which are upright) that are holding the flapper on. I'm not sure if the rubber has hardened. It's almost like plastic but isn't. Do I have to cut it? It's an old American Standard that does 3g I think.
The f ing flapper needs changing and I’m tired of buying them so I didn’t and the leak is costing me more in losses
I keep a few spares in stock so I never have to make a trip tot he store, only tot he garage to get a new flapper
What is a Fill valve? What is the supply line going to the wall?
Great video - helped me fix this right away.
Glad it helped
My new Elger was installed by a mechanic , He reported every thing inside the tank was assembled. Thinking the tank fill valve was set correctly and it flushed OK, it was ignored, Then it was discovered the flapper started hanging up, preventing the flapper to close. the excess chain wrapped around itself and shortened the chain thus holding the flapper open. The chain was a fine close link stainless. note the chain should be trimmed to the exact length! That's not all the valve's float was also guilty! The assembly was mounted very close to the rear wall of the tank. I noticed the interference fit, of the float trying to float to the shut off position. I placed the shaft of a plastic cotton swap against the wall of the tank and the top of the flow valve to permit the float to work properly. A near future event the mechanic will return and shut the water off and loosen the mounting of the fill valve and reposition to permit max clearance. Water closets have been produced for over two hundred years, still haven't got it right!
Omg thank you so much for this video
Speaking of toliets, I now have a Valve that doesn't go up to stop the constant running of water. I saw a promo you explained. Why would this Valve not go up to stop? This is so annoying. Sorry! 👍
At 5:05, isn’t the small fill tube supposed to be installed inside the white pipe? Keeps the water from splashing, and makes it quieter.
Yes you can do it that way also.
Help! I tried to do this simple replacement, but I can't get the old flapper off! The sidearms connecting the flapper to the overflow tube seem to be a hard plastic so they won't pop off. Do I have to replace that whole overflow tube contraption??
I can't get the flapper off I have Tug at that flapper I pulled up I pulled out to the side it just won't come off I'm frustrated because the toilet is making so much noise. Ugh It seems so simple but yet so hard. Any suggestions?
The old flap wont come up, it doesn't hook on like the one, so what do I do
Thank you! We just bought our home and the toilet tank has been running non-stop in our master bathroom. (Not sure why the home inspector didn’t pick that up during his home inspection.) I’m heading to the hardware store to get a replacement flapper. Bye, bye $300 water bills.
My old flapper does not want to come off.. it’s not flexible at all
In some cases I have used pliers to gently twist that part that needs pop off the the hinge
I’ve replaced my flapper 3 times they work for awhile then start losing water again what other problems can it be HELP!!
Make sure you clean all the way around the edge of the opening where the flapper sits on top to make sure that there's nothing slimy or anything microscopic that could be allowing openings between the flapper and the pipe opening. Also make sure you're getting a reasonably decent flapper don't buy the Super cheapy ones make sure it's nice and rigid. Make sure there is enough slack on the chain so that the flapper does indeed go all the way down and close like it's supposed to and make sure that it closes aligned properly.
@@jeffostroff thank you so much for answering. It boils down to one thing….. The correct flapper for my toilet. I looked on the inside for the number for my specific one. It arrives today!!!!
it did NOT tell you what to do if the newly installed very nice Korky flapper is installed and the leakage and refill are better but still there! No mention at all of type of grease or what to grease or how much!
My flapper that's installed already is not coming off. The part that connects to the toilet is one rubber piece. No snap off. What do I do?
Hi. My husband replaced the flapper and the seat with epoxy under the seat. Every so many minutes I can hear that it's losing a slight amount of water. What do you suggest?
Thank you for the video! Quick question, how long does it take for the water to refill in the tank? Mine is moving really really slow once I turned the water back on and I’m a little worried.
Oh my goodness...the side bars had me stumped. Thank you for that detail on how to push them to the side and lift!
You're so welcome!
Mine is an old toilet in a 1956 house. It uses a toilet ball made by Fluidmaster. It leaks worse after you change it. I had to soak it in hot water from the coffeemaker and push it in before it cools down. I then filled the bowl with hot water from the sink. I put my oil-filled radiator next to the tank and covered it all with a fiberglass curtain. I let the heater run on high for 4 hours. The tank got up to 130°F. It sat there two hours before the water got cool. I left it overnight to shape to the hole. I used it the next day and it flushed okay. 🐀🐾
Jeff you da real MVP
Thanks Derek!
My toilet flushed itself 3 times while watching this video, thanks so much!
You're welcome! Now you know what to do
I use drop in bleach tablets which kills those flapper thingys. I am a single mom but learned how to fix this myself. I am about to do it for a 3rd time!
Hallujahah a video that does a a great job of specificlly describing what the problem is, what is happening and how to fix it. I am not someone that really wants to fix my own toliet. I tried to do it in the past and it wasn't successful. This looks easy. Just need to get the correct flapper. I was introduced to your channel during the collapse of the Champlain towers. You did a great job on those videos!
Jeffostroff Can you tell me the model # of the American Standard toilet that you’ve recommend to us in the past? Thanks for all that you do.
Used a moen universal 3" flapper but the posts on the tower are different sizes.
I hate that. Sometimes moen designs are unique.
How would you know that you only need to change that part and not the whole valve? Or just start there since it is cheapest?
Whenever I narrow the issue down tot he valve, I just buy a whole new Flushmaster for $13
I replaced the flapper and the other parts inside the toilet.I did the leak test and the water stopped leaking into the bowl when the water reached the flapper level. So, I replaced the flapper for the second time. But, now I am wondering what is causing the leak from the tank into the bowl.
I keep trying to turn my toilets water off, but when I flush it it just fills back up.
To turn the water off to the toilet you must turn off the valve coming out of the wall below the toilet that feeds the hose that comes up to the bottom of the toilet tank. Usually you turn it clockwise until it is tight and that should shut the water off.
How do adjust the chain on the flapper? Is the chain already adjusted and you just put it on the clip? This will be my first time replacing it by myself.
Try to keep the chain the same length as the old chain. All you do is move the hook to a different link on the chain to change the height.
@@jeffostroff I don't know what I did when I was looking at how the old chain on the flapper looked to adjust when I replaced the old one, I noticed there was now water on the floor. What happened? What did I do? There wasn't water on the bathroom floor before I started messing with the chain.
How often does a flapper need changing? I only ask because it seems like I have to change mine every year, could it be the water in the toliet affecting the flappers durability? what can i do about the toilet water if thats true?
Thanks. I need to get a new “starship enterprise” piece so I can boldly go where no one has gone before
Thanks Jeff very self explanatory learned how to change a toilet flapper 👍🏾👍🏾100%
Is the American Standard sealer set up different from what you show in this video. Mine seems quite different from what you show?
The old flapper is not that flexible. Not going over the pegs.
Thank you for this video. I really needed it.
You are so welcome!
I just change the flapper. It does not fix it. Now what? Thank you.
Maybe the round plastic gasket that it sits on to block the opening at the bottom of the tank might be slimy and in need to cleaning, or maybe the flapper is too big or too small. It should seal up that opening
@@jeffostroff thx I just fixed it. So weird.
Went to Korky UA-cam page…
Had to LOWER the “top part” on the fill value to the overflow drain level! Works!!
What even is this?
Is the flapper the only thing that could cause that noise?
We have another video covering the changing of the fill valve.
Thanks for the video I'm on my way to help my friend fix their toilet
I can't remove the side arms of the flapper. It looks like it's made of plastic and I can't remove it should I just cut it off
It is rubber. I have had some stiff flappers before that are hard to do by hand. I use pliers to reach down, crap the loop and twist if off the hinge post
@@jeffostroff thanks. I tried it again and really put some muscle into it and they came off. Don't know why it was so hard though.
That flapper went down too fast. Was that enough water to flush the commode?
On this toilet you hold it down as long as you need, I experiment until I find an amount that flushes
what if the toilet tank doesn’t refill after changing the flapper?
Picture not clear
The new flappers I have been looking at don't have the eyelet type connections but have hook shaped ones. Do they work the same?
Thanks that's a good vedio explain real good
Thank you! I’m sure you saved us hundreds of dollars!
Thank Dad !
Thank you very much. Very informative!
What can you do if you broke one of the arms the flapper snaps on?
Need to see better how to fix the chain as our flapper top is broken and the chain slipped right out. Temp fix with a paper clip through a different part of the top of the flapper only worked once or twice. Also, how do you get the right chain length back? Bowl fills very little. Thanks! Heading to hardware store get new flapper, old one in hand, now.
A new flapper is a no brainer they're only $6. If the top of it broke off like that chances are the plastic was already degrading it must have been a really old flapper. You don't need to do anything with the chain in terms of adjusting the length, the what you do is it depends on where you hook it into which chain link that's how it sets the length of chain. So what I like to do is set it so that once the flapper is down and the hook is connected to the top of the flapper, the other end of the hook should hook up so that the chain is sort of intention but not too much tension that it would lift up the flapper.
