"Do they have their own personality?" Yes and no, they are made from humans who have their own wishes and thoughts, but trough evaluation, trail, initiation, geneseed and training they are molded in the image of the legion they follow. That being said, it's not like they're being mindcontrolled by those with higher ranks. For example during the Horus Heresy (when half of the primarchs turned against the Emperor), there were parts of the traitor legions who stayed loyal, and part of the loyal legions who turned traitor. When talking directly about going to war, and wanting to go fight.. it's like they're made for it, literally. To quote the Emperor "And they shal have no fear". But they do have doubs and internal troubles, and the diffferent chapters have widely different mentalities in how war should be waged, what is acceptible and so on. If you want to dive into that, check out Helsreach, it's a 13 part series. It's a very different style than Astartes, but it's more of a story and is based on a book. Oddly, letting him die is what SHOULD happen. He has to die to be reborn. He is about 45,000 years old and has died a variety of times, only to be reborn. He's walked with the first hunter gatherer tribes, spoken with the first shamans, and just casually walks among man for the first 20,000 or so years. The Feudal structure of the Imperium 100% neccesary simply because of the size of it. Even with FTL space travel it can take months or even years to cross even a portion the Imperium. Theres no way a single central power can govern the individual needs of the thousands of individual sectors, let alone the myriad systems and millions of planets. So power is divvied out into smaller and smallest groups so no one of them gets overwhelmed trying to direct them all. This, as a consequence, makes it impossible to enforce uniformity but it also makes sure that most decisions don't get bogged down in a bureaucracy that takes too long to decide on even the most simple matters. Let's put it into a scenario. You're a planetary governor and theres a massive armada of aliens bearing down on your system and you and the other planetary governors don't have the manpower to repel them. Without the Feudal system, you'd have to send a reinforcement request to the administrative head of the Imperium back on Earth. Your reinforcement request isn't even looked at for several years as there is a backlog of requests from a galaxy spanning empire ahead of yours. Eventually your request is noticed and a fleet is dispatched, all they find however are the ruins of your planets that are already years dead. Alternatively, in a feudal system you can send that same reinforcement request to whatever local government or dynasty that rules your sector instead and they can organize fleets from other systems near you to help because they're not drowning in data from across the whole galaxy.
People forget that we can only centralize our government because radio and telephone made communicating almost instantaneous. When it takes several weeks or months to send and receive a message, the feudal system works. There is a reason why it was even a thing. You think the king wanted to part with power and give the opportunity for counts to rebel?
@@ODDnanref Europe's decentralization into feudalism was also part of a deliberate policy by the late Roman Empire to pre-stage rapid-reaction forces of cavalry across its borders, in efforts to keep the flame of civilization alive in the face of an era of barbarism and decay. Lol, the feudal system is a matter of circumstance, intentional ignorance, zealotry, and apathy. Your argument is dead from the existence of the golden age of technology. Humanity dominated the galaxy to the point that Eldar *and greenskins* signed nonaggression pacts with humanity. Feudal systems consolidate individual power; nothing else.
@@DoctorProph3t Federacy is in a way a sort of feudal system. Which was the government organization during the the dark age of technology. The way the govern themselves now is not a feudal system either as they have a centralized power structure, but each sector manages their systems as they see fit. Everyone basically hates one another, Orks fight everyone and even other Orks. Chaos Gods fight Everyone and even other chaos gods. On another note space marine chapters operate within the guidelines of the Codex Astartes. A rule book written by the Primarch Roboute guilliman. Marines are very diverse in personality and chapters have different personalities. Such as the Salamanders chapter who are seen as the most human space marines. They are craftsmen and decorate their armor with flames and distinguish themselves with hides and trophies. The carcharadons chapter are brutal cold killers who patrol the void of outside the galaxy. Unlike most chapters they are fleet-based with no home world so they undergo the red tithe. Basically kidnapping people to serve them as slaves while also finding suitable candidates for gene seeds. What I am saying is Rank and file space marines have persoanlity and can sometimes show it. It just depends on the chapter and what said chapter sees as appropriate.
Dark Angels threw out the Codex Astartes’ specifications for a 1st and 2nd Company in favour of the Deathwing and Ravenwing respectively. White Scars have the largest abundance of fast attack vehicles such as bikes, speeders and fliers. Space Wolves don’t see the Codex to be of much use to the way in which they operate and so use their own. Imperial Fists don’t change too much from the Codex’s teachings, although one of their successors, the Black Templars, pretty much went the way of the Space Wolves in that they just did whatever they thought was best for them. Blood Angels switch around the designations of Reserve Companies 8 and 9 to help their newly inducted Marines resolve pent up aggression. In addition, the Death Company is for those BAs who fell to the Black Rage. Iron Hands rename the companies as Clans and their Techmarines combine their duties with that of Company Captains, Apothecaries and Chaplains, making them Iron Fathers. Ultramarines are by far the most faithful to the Codex, seeing as their Primarch was the one who written it. They quote verse and chapter of the Codex whenever they can and punish those who stray from its teachings. Salamanders have the highest abundance of (combi) flamers and meltas among the 9 original Loyalist Space Marine Legions-turned-Chapters. Raven Guard are generally only faithful to the Codex as far as organisational structure is concerned, but they fall back on their own skills and experiences as scouts, assassins and troubleshooters when in battle, relying on stealth, subterfuge, rapid deployment and guerilla warfare to control the battlefield and gain advantage over their opponents. They were also encouraged to take initiative and think for themselves instead on relying on a centralised centre of command, which made them very tactically flexible and extremely potent in small numbers. This was probably the way that Guilliman intended for the Codex to be used, as a guide for organisational structure rather than as a bloody holy book. Interestingly, he and Corax, the Raven Guard’s Primarch, got along so swimmingly that Corax naturally adopted the Codex and some of its teachings were brought on by the virtual sparring sessions and simulations that Corax and Guilliman often had. Corax had won 3 of them, but Guilliman adapted and learned from his mistakes. He probably put accounts of those experience in the Codex. Upon Guilliman’s return, the emergence of the Tyranids and the Necrons and the creation of the Primaris Space Marines, Guilliman said, “Fuck it,” threw out his original draft, started revisions and decreed to all Space Marines that they can choose whether or not to follow the Space Book as long as it was effective and got shit done.

About Exterminatus: It is only used in the most dire of circumstances, and there are many ways of going about it. Orbital bombardment just destroys everything on the surface, but leaves the planet intact for recolonization later. Virus bombing releases a pathogen known as the Life-Eater Virus that reduces all biological substances to organic sludge and methane gas, which is usually then ignited. These planets can still be recolonized, if only after a few centuries. Fire bombing ignites the atmosphere itself, making recolonization difficult, but not impossible. The most extreme measure is the use of Cyclonic torpedoes, which rip a hole in reality and destroy the planet utterly. (fun fact, the psychic scream created by this last form of Exterminatus is used to create an incredibly powerful artillery shell. Waste not want not)
the imperium of man lays clam to the entire Milkyway galaxy. However, though they say they own everything they truly don't as there are sections of uncharted territories, entire systems that are under the control of xenos (slang for aliens). One major factor in the lost for projection by the imperium is the Eye of Terror which is a hell portal with tendrils that split the galaxy almost in two as well as the bureaucracy of the imperium makes it hard to muster any significant force as everyone says "my problem is worse" worsening the already degrading empire.

One thing worth pointing out, is that countless billions, if not trillions of imperial citizens will live out their whole lives in relative peace and security, akin a to a normal life today on Earth. The actual odds of your planet being invading by Orks, Daemons, Tyranids, or some other nightmarish faction is actually pretty low due to just how big the Milky Way galaxy is. The reason why it seems like every story focuses on the endless war is because that makes for a better story.
@Brakamar, or else! Think the blocks from the latest judge dredd movie, only each one is the size of a city, there are massive factories built into the basement that everyone has to work in, and the gang violence is a thousand times worse. That's basically a hive city.
Space Marines "are" 8 feet tall partly because of genetic and hormone enhancement during puberty and partly due to the fact that the suits they wear add even more to this height
The thing about Imperium's decline is that it's been in decline for the last 10,000 years. It was born 10,000 years ago when the God Emperor of Mankind launched The Great Crusade, a massive conquest, to reunite all human worlds and bring them under the banner of the Imperium. But then the Horus Heresy (a massive civil war) happened and the Emperor was basically put on life-support and lost most of his ability to rule the Imperium. Ever since then it was in decline due to the spread of superstition and ignorance. But the Imperium is HUGE, it controls most of our galaxy and has access to so many resources that even when in decline it's still too big to be brought down easily. Losing billions of soldiers in a single war is like a drop in the bucket for the Imperium. And it IS fighting an endless war against all the other factions, one of which (The Tyranids) came from Outside our galaxy in order to devour it.

The imperium has no fixed border because warp travel isn't really direct to get from one place to another a ship might have to jump past countless unexplored areas to reach the next owned planets and inside that unexplored space anyone and anything can be living there. Even inside the imperium there are alien empires that either haven't been discovered or the imperium just hasn't got around to wiping them out.

22:00 To give a hint of just how brutal that civil war was, the Imperium estimated that the total casualties on both sides was about 7 TRILLION. On the world of Tallarn, the greatest armoured battle ever fought took place as over 50.000 tanks clashed on its virus-bombarded surface.
13:40 I understood it more as they forgot. They don't remember much that happened in the past, they just do what they always did, because that's the way of the imperium, and doing things differently could be seen as heretical. Just like the Adeptus Mechanicus still install Picatinny rails on their guns and rifles, but never use sights, they just do it because that's the way to do it.
"It sounds depressing" Becouse it is. Dont worry, the other factions have it as shit, or worse than the Imperium. Welcome to the grimdarkness of the far future.

The hive mind one The ones who will fuck you up as much as they fuck up their enemies. And the orks. The orks are having a blast.
Depressing? Taking a boy aged 10-12 years old, make him fight for his life and endure but trials, just to see if he is tough enough to become a space marine. Then he has to endure 19 surgeries over the next decade, including brain surgery and being skinned alive. All while being hypnotically indoctrinated with loyalty for the Imperium and the skills he needs to fight. Good news is, unless he dies by violence he dies by violence, he is functionally immortal. Of course Space Marines are exposed to (and die by) violence an awful lot. And there are also the other effects of the gene-seed. Sure, it turns you into a 8 foot tall, 900 lb mountain of muscle and reinforced bone with 2 hearts and three lungs. But, depending on which Primarch your gene-seed comes from, you could become a space vampire. Or a space werewolf. Or an emo space albino. 40K has an obscene amount of lore, and it is dense. Can it be cut into bite-size chunks, simplified and crayon-flavored enough for a jarhead to grasp? Not sure. It is 38,000 years in the future, and shit has happened. Mankind grew in a Golden Age and spread across the Galaxy. Then an Event Occurred (something like an AI rebellion) (around year 20,000 or so) and human society broke. Think Mad Max, but everywhere. This lasts a few thousand years. Then this big dude with magic powers and flowing black hair steps out of the shadows with the goal of uniting mankind- first on Earth, then the entire galaxy. He gathers troops, builds a lab and creates genetic super-soldiers (Thunder Warriors) that are huge but unstable. He eventually -conquers- unites all of Earth. Conveniently, all of his unstable, hyper-violent Thunder warriors just happened to die to the last man in the final battle and were most definitely not wiped out by the Emperors personal bodyguard. Now, he creates 20 perfect dudes, masters of warfare and administration, to be his generals in his fight to retake the galaxy. He uses his own genetic code, but adds in some tid-bits to make each “Primarch” unique and tend toward different specialties. Then he used their genetic code to create the next generation of super-soldiers. Space Marines. 20 legions, each enhanced with the genetic code of their Primarch. The Primarchs got snatched as babies and scattered all over the galaxy in their cribs. The Emperor mounts his Great Crusade to unite the Galaxy and find his lost Primarchs. Eventually, he finds all 20, but 2 had some weird shit going on (family secret- they don’t talk about it so we don’t know what), but he has the 18 we know about. All went through some serious shit since being taken as babies, and most of them grew up to rule the planets they were dumped on. They are just that good. Most of them. Angron sucks. There are now 18 Space Marine Legions. Each Legion as tens or hundreds of thousands of Space Marines. Each Legion is led by the Primarch whose "gene-seed" (genetic code) was used to create them. Once all his Primarchs are on board and up to speed, he figures his Crusade is well in hand and jets to work on his next project. But it turns out his chief Primarch general has done daddy issues and feels abandoned, gets suckered and tricked into thinking he should be in charge. He gets 8 of his Primarch brothers on board, and now it is a 9v9 super civil war. The big E pulls out the win, barely, and he has to be trapped on his life support chair and hope his kids can keep things going the way he wants (hint- they can’t). Loyal Legions: Dark Angels (hold your jokes), Ultramarines, White Scars, Raven Guard, Imperial Fists, Iron Hands, Salamanders, Space Wolves, and Blood Angels. Traitor Legions: Luna Wolves/Sons of Horus, Iron Warriors, Death Guard, World Eaters, Word Bearers, Night Lords, Thousand Sons, Emperor's Children, and the Alpha Legion (hold your jokes again). So, we move forward 10,000 years. A religious order has grown around Big-E, which he would have hated. The 9 loyal Primarchs have each been killed (mostly killed) or lost through time. The various races, each of whom thinks they should be running the galaxy) are fighting each other and mankind. We have: Eldar: old space elves who were created long ago to fight an even older war who were super-good, but got bored, murder fucked a chaos god into existence who lives to feed on their souls. They are pretty much wiped out, but there are factions trying to survive and rebuild. Orks: mobile plants, grown from fungus. They live to fight, and will happily fight each other if there is no one else around. They get smarter when you get more of them organized, and their tech works just because they think it should. About as hard to get rid of as Athlete's foot, and for the same reason. Necrons: old beings who sold their souls to get metal bodies, then killed their gods for getting screwed on that deal and use pieces of their gods to power their weapons. They lost their war and went into hiding, sleeping out the time underground on thousands of worlds. Long forgotten, everyone is freaking out when these dudes started waking up and wondered who all these squatters in their galaxy were. Tau: Newcomers on the block. Blue fish boys who talk big about The Greater Good. Willing to work with alien races, just as long as they accept the Tau are in charge. Think space communism. Only race willing to work peacefully with other races. Often thought of as the only “good guys” in 40K, turns out the Tau ruling class are brainwashing the rest of the Tau and subject races into thinking they are all on the same side. They decide what “the greater good” is. Tyranids: Space bugs from outside the galaxy, moving through, eating planets. Perfect predators, adapt to surroundings, all that jazz. They eat entire biospheres. There are different factions, and I barely touched on chaos and the warp, but this is long enough.

One of the horrible ironies of the Imperium is that the Emperor never wanted to be considered a god, and never wanted religion to exist. He wanted a secular Imperium free of religion, which he believed was the cause of division among the Imperium. When he was nearly slain in the Horus Heresy, the religion of the Imperial Creed formed around him completely outside of his will, he has nothing to do with it. What makes this irony even worse is that 1.) the oppressive theocratic dictatorship is _why_ the Imperium still exists 10,000 years after his internment upon the Golden Throne, and 2.) the collective faith of humanity worshipping him as a god has made him _ridiculously_ powerful as a psyker, even moreso than when he was alive and walking. Also, if there is one thing to know about Warhammer fans is that we _love_ talking about the lore. As for the last question about Space Marines, a lot of answers for a lot of points. -While Space Marines are individuals and are capable of individual initiative, as part of their training they are indoctrinated in their Chapter’s culture and warrior-philosophy. The Ultramarines, for example, are zealous adherents to the Codex Astartes, where the Space Wolves regard the Codex as just a dusty tome. The Salamanders will position themselves as literal human shields to protect humans, where some other Chapters will mow down civilians in the crossfire without hesitation if it means killing the enemy. -They are still, however, single-minded in their devotion to the Imperium, the Emperor, and the mission. They will lay down their lives without hesitation to ensure the completion of the mission, the death of the enemy, or both. If you want a Marines Chapter that enjoys the fight, however, you can look no further than the wild and nearly-feral Space Wolves (the Blood Angels should not be considered to “enjoy” the fight. While they and their successors are capable of blood rages and massacre one would expect from the followers of the Chaos gods, it is from a crippling side effect of other...issues...known to the Blood Angels gene-seed).
It's worth noting that during the "dark age of technology", man was so strong that *no one* could hope to stand against it, and it's said that even the Tyranids were forced into a nonaggression pact of sorts. As such, the "decline" of man only puts it on roughly equal footing to the other forces (also chaos got crazier). In other franchises, man is seen as the new kid on the intergalactic scale (ie; Star Trek, Starcraft). Not so in Warhammer.
Ya it kind raises more questions but honestly it’s the way the lore is it’s so vast and interconnected with itself that anything you watch while informative will also raise more questions Imo this video is great not for answering those questions but for setting the stage and getting you hooked into the universe and wanting to learn more
As for your question of why they can be so advanced and yet rely on such outdated methods that goes all into their history of advancement war and declining that’s way too long to get into in a single comment lol
@@hunterwaguespack3963 We can try. Humanity got a golden âge on the milky way. Collapsed because of AI rebellion. Rose again by the will of the emperor. Collapsed due to betrayal and heresy. Is now trying to survive ancient and new aliens trying to regain control of the galaxy.

"This just sounds depressing" - welcome to Warhammer 40k. "Why is like that?" - Because it's Warhammer 40k. It's a bleak setting, on purpose. Everything sucks. Life is meaningless. Joy does not exist unless you're an Ork. There is only war. Everybody loses. Nobody wins. ... Except Orks. They just want to fight and bash skulls. They're living their best life. But even then, there's tragedy in them, in their story.
As people have said, Bricky's every faction explained is great to get into the universe. He does a good job. Warhammer is *heavy* on lore, characters, and, pain, just about everything is vast. I just found your channel, and I really like your content and hearing your thoughts.
Once you get past the main races Orks, Eldar, Tyranids, Necrons, Chaos/Demons, and Tau. Once you get back to Humanity I would say in order of importance do The Emperor of Mankind, The 20 Primarchs, The Custodes, The Astartes/Space Marines, and then finally the Imperial Guard. Thats at least how I would say to do it but you seem to be more interested in the Astartes so it fine if you want to jump around I am just glad we have another brother coming into the fold of the fandom.
their genetic augmentations makes Space Marines nearly immortal - think about a supersoldier - the best of the best and bravest an most devoted with a age of - take a senior captain.... 200 years combat experience (?)- - they are absolute fearless after the transformation full of hate for the enemies of mankind ... they would never ever consider dying at old age in a bed a good way to end things - they are devoted to be killed in the line of duty - and their are really hard to kill....
here's a short version of what make up a Space Marine a SM is chosen at a young age and thrust into relentless training and survival tests, the objective is to weed out the weak no matter the cost once a child has proven himself to be capable, he'll then be introduced into a Scout Marine squad in the chapter where he'll work along side other recruits and some veterans, learning the essentials of SM tactics and mindset if he survived long enough in the Scout Marine, then he'll be judged and if he's chosen, he'll become a Space Marine The process of creating a SM is a grueling and painful one. Each SM carry from 19 to 23 augmentations (number of augs varied depending on the chapter) and the grafting of gene seed (the most important part). If he dies in the process, then he'll be discarded. If he can survive that painful process and there's no sign of augmentation rejection, then he'll be an official SM. A normal SM is 8 feet tall, weighing at about 2 tons with full armor and weaponry. They have super strength, super agility, super reflexes and intelligent. They have no fear and can fight without food or water for days without rest. You can blow off an arm and a leg and they can still fight. All thanks to the augments that they carry. I'm talking 2 hearts, 3 lungs, enhanced bone structure, regenerative healing, night vision, etc... Hell, a SM can even survive in the vacuum of space for a few hours before succumbing to it. If somehow their bones are broken in a fight, the bones can set itself back into position and let the healing commence, albeit a slow process and a patch job but it'll keep them fighting longer.
The Emperor wanted to foster an empire of scientific knowledge and progressiveness in regards to technology and understanding. He actually abhorred religious worship and severely punished one of his primarchs: the primarch Lorgar, for fostering religious beliefs that the Emperor was a god. I would recommend the warhammer 40k lore videos made by Luetin above any others as I believe he goes into much greater detail as well as having a more competent breakdown of the lore and variables that develop within the lore over time.
That was a great reaction to a great video. Since the video you reacted to was from early 2018 I am looking forward to your reaction to the lore development since then.
Here's another lore intro that covers most of the setting that might be a bit more easy to digest, by Arch. He covers basically every aspect of 40k from faction lore to events in canon. ua-cam.com/video/uSZ_wW0-FW4/v-deo.html
It uses a feudal system because without high speed communication that is the only way to govern a huge territory. The imperiam literally takes years to decades to travel across and almost as long to send messages
Arch (Arch Warhammer by his former name) did description videos on the Astartes episodes. That would be a good way to get acquainted with the universe and lore using something you're already familiar with ;7
Everyone hates each other, 40k is an "everyone versus everyone" situation. Just imagine World War II (or III if you like) where nobody really gets to be "neutral". So if an enemy of the Imperium attacks it, they might expose themselves to their other enemies who are also enemies of the Imperium. Not to mention that the Imperium's territory is such a horrible case of border gore that mapmakers have given up showing borders and just mark points of influence, as you see by the maps shown. If its too depressing for you that's ok. Nobody holds it against you. We don't want people in the community/fanbase who don't like 40k the way it is. But while it comes off initially as depressing and hopeless, that is part of the appeal. Its not a hunky-dory Noblebright Star Trek adventure written by a sheltered "intellectual" with no grounding, nor a high-minded "Space Fantasy" mythos like Star Wars (or what Star Wars used to be anyway), its a dark, gritty, ruthless franchise. To give you a metaphor, if Star Trek is civilian life as a rich kid, then 40k is life in the Marines coming from a dirt-poor background.
Just subscribed. I cant wait to see you slowly understand this grimdark universe. It is horrible and beautiful. MajorKill youtube channel has the most entertaining lore videos
The planet destroying thing is often not called for, but there are enemies in the 40K universe that if a single one of them were to arrive to another planet that planet would be doomed as well, rapidly destroying entire systems if not checked immediately - so sometimes destroying an entire planet is by far the lesser evil.
To answer your last question. There is a animated story called hellsreach it shows how the space Marines think and act. One thing to know that 90% brought into the space marine die during the transformation and training to become an space marine
The Imperium of Man, is the normal human-centred empire of other IPs. But the scale is far above any other "normal galaxy empire", the number of worlds is counted in billions, in the sense that losing a couple of dozen worlds for just bureaucracy mistake for hundreds of years is a common occurrence. They are in a constant battle of attrition, they gain ground somewhere but also lose some, but because of the massive scale a few dots on the map is a couple of planets. This attrition is from the imperium try to respond to problems from within and without. Like a Real Life world, the imperium has to deal with all kind of problem, from within, rebellions, traitors, criminals and the more exoteric form "heretics" as well "mind control/infiltration" aliens. As well problems from without, that most consist of constant invasions and raids from the varity of enemies, from renegade traitors warbands that run to the fringes of space, to aliens empires and out of the galaxy invasions, as well the planets that have fallen under their grasp and turned against the Imperium and even pirates. This happen ALL THE TIME, ALMOST EVERYWHERE. That also why is said they are in a constant state of Total War. Life on the Imperium can vary wildly depending on where your planet is located and what is your social class and importance to the Imperium at large. Some planets are on the frontline against the main stronghold of demonic gate, like cadia, so they are converted into a fortress world that is basically 100% military discipline from birth and is fighting constant wars without stop. While others are on a dystopian regime of pseudo-slavery to produce food, ores, arms for the imperium and sleeping 2hrs a day and eating reprocessed corpse starch is common, while the planet itself is put under a ridiculous amount of taxes, leaving little to make things better. But in the same vein, there is pleasure worlds dedicated just to be luxury vacattion spots or even worlds that aren't much different than today Earth. Planets are in constant rebellion and suppression, for a variaty of reasons, maybe their taxes are too high, maybe their planetary governator is being controlled by demons, maybe the Cardinal is in fact a body-snatching alien. The sucesses of their rebellion vary as much as their reason, some success for a while before a terrible suppression killing 1/3 of the planet population, some get away for hundreds of years because they are too far and too expensive to take back now, but all of them are in plans to eventually receive an eventual suppression force even if take millennia.
For the space marines, a lot of this stuff varies chapter by chapter. Each chapter has it's own sort of "personality" that is imprinted on each space marine through the geneseed they get which is the core of the upgrade from "normal person" to space marine. Besides that however, they each do have personalities and specialties and stuff. In general, they tend to pretty focused on military tactics and stuff; they are well aware that their role is to crush the enemies of man and not do much else.

For the mental and emotional state of space Marines it varies from chapter to chapter. Some chapters like the Black templars pursue glory in battle sometimes doing things out of what's nessesary to achieve such glory. Other chapters are very focused on completing thier mission at any cost. Now for emotion a good majority of space Marines have a more self righteous attitude towards normal humans due to thier augments and training. There are some like Salamanders chapter who have a more heart warming and empathetic outlook to humans and even putting thier lives before thier own to save them. But as I said it all varies from chapter to chapter of loyal space Marines to the imperium. For chaos Marines they are just usually bat shit crazy and or filled with hatred and deep anger towards those of imperium space Marines and human alike
The mindset of the Space Marines is often that of "I am going to die for the Emperor and the Imperium, sooner or later." The only way that they leave is feet-first.

"Do they have their own personality?"
Yes and no, they are made from humans who have their own wishes and thoughts, but trough evaluation, trail, initiation, geneseed and training they are molded in the image of the legion they follow.
Edit: And yes, they take a lot of names from Latin (oh high/low gothic as they call it in the lore).
Greek and Latin mixed with French and sprinkled with scientific principles, would be how I’d describe High Gothic as a language.

These were the first true knights.
@@DoctorProph3t
Federacy is in a way a sort of feudal system. Which was the government organization during the the dark age of technology.
The way the govern themselves now is not a feudal system either as they have a centralized power structure, but each sector manages their systems as they see fit. Like how a federacy has a centralized power but each estate manages themselves as they see fit.
@@DoctorProph3t What feudalism does not do, is consolidate state power. The Imperium absolutely wishes that it was a centralized, unitary state, but their circumstances make this impossible.

About Exterminatus:
It is only used in the most dire of circumstances, and there are many ways of going about it.
Also it's the same emperor the whole time. He's over 50 thousand years old and immortal both before he was wounded and put on the throne and now as the throne itself is keeping his damaged body alive.
Don't forget the thousands of psykers killed to support the emperor.
The origins of the emperor is unknown, as is his age I believe.

There are TWO videos by Russian Badger. "For The Emperor" and "Heavy Flamer Heresy" (in that order). While "officially" video game reviews, the peek into the lore just enough to have fun without drowning anyone.

@Brakamar, or else! Yeah, but not every planet in the Imperium is a hive world.

Yeah, it's pretty overwhelming at first, but that's probably because the video throws such a monstrous amount of information at you at once. Chances are that if you just pick one group that you want to learn about, it will be less overwhelming.
Also yeah, All Warhammer 40k Factions Explained is a really good video. You will definitely find some factions you like from it.

Especially for beginners.

There are a few you have to watch out for because there are interlocking stories. So there is a chance that you could miss something.
For the Imperium, lives are currency.
Lost planets are casualties.
If your looking for good Warhammer lore channels here's a few top tier lore masters to check out.
Luetin, excellent lore videos a bit long and fairly dry. He goes right into the details.
Oculus imperia. A top notch lore master whose videos are all done in character as an imperial historian. He really gives you a sense of what it would be like to be a normal person in the universe.
Baldermort. A mix of both a little story at the beginning to give a feel for the subject and then the lore/rules.
And finally there is Arch (formally Arch Warhammer) this one is a bit controversial (for some reason) some people love his mix of lore with a touch of humour. Others (who tend to be self admitted Marxists mind) think he is a fascist due to him making obvious(albeit deliberately offensive) jokes and his free speech stance. But he does put out some excellent stuff and is worth checking out to make your own mind up about.
"Why does everyone look like they're 8 feet tall" lol because they are my man
13:40 I understood it more as they forgot. They don't remember much that happened in the past, they just do what they always did, because that's the way of the imperium, and doing things differently could be seen as heretical. Just like the Adeptus Mechanicus still install Picatinny rails on their guns and rifles, but never use sights, they just do it because that's the way to do it.
"It sounds depressing"
Becouse it is. Dont worry, the other factions have it as shit, or worse than the Imperium. Welcome to the grimdarkness of the far future.
One is a race going to extinction
The other is one who lost their ability to reproduce, and is basically backupped into computers.
Then you have the one where they have to constantly fuck everyone else or they get fucked up
The weird casted based society that appears to be mind controlled by their leaders and basically chemically castrates any other species.
The hive mind one
The ones who will fuck you up as much as they fuck up their enemies.
Or have an uncontrollable desire to replace your limbs with metal replacements. Fun things like that.
@@ODDnanref Yeah, the Orks are the only people in W40K who actually enjoy being in W40K. In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war - and as it happens, war is their FAVOURITE THING EVER! :D They're basically kids in a candy store.

Luetin09 and Oculus Imperia are excellent places to look for insight.
Luetin09 talks about heroes, crazy weapons, the grim reality that is warhammer 40k and does it with bite size chunks. One episode is, usually, one subject.
Oculus Imperia on the other hand is pure scholar AF.
He speaks as a historian who happens to have free time(which is odd, considering the works hours in the imperium) to talk to some peasants about the glory that is the Imperium of Man and of its glorious leader the God Emperor himself.

To try and answer your question at the end of the video while it may not be a good answer is technically both “which you’ll find is the answer to a lot of questions” Warhammer universe is vast and diverse you might get one chapter of space Marines of people who feel they have no choice but to fight another chapter who simply love combat and bloodshed or another who fight bc they feel they were chosen by the “god” emperor and it’s the same when you get it to individual space Marines, or the chaos legions who have abandoned the emperor & the imperiam and are usually either out to please the chaos God they worship or for their own self interest

To all your questions, bricky - every 40k faction explained. For your interests, part 1, for a total rundown, +part 2.
We have:
Eldar: old space elves who were created long ago to fight an even older war who were super-good, but got bored, murder fucked a chaos god into existence who lives to feed on their souls.
There are different factions, and I barely touched on chaos and the warp, but this is long enough.
just a little correction about tau, saying tau is space communist is actually wrong , in fact the imperium is actually more communist than the tau.
tau is highly inspired by ww2 imperial japan and in general imperialistic cast system, cast system is actually completely opposite of what communist is
@@kalzhae “For The Greater Good.” While there is a definite leadership caste, for the purposes of everyone else, it is a contribution toward the betterment of Tau society as a whole. Not quite socialism, not quite communism.
All the societies in 40K are loosely based on an earth society, but have diverged the more lore was written into them. They also do not fit into traditional Earth government types because they are not affected by a)real world human interference or b) unscripted events.
However, this was written as a “down and dirty,” 2 sentence overview. It was the best I could do, and accuracy of our favored areas must suffer as a result.

@@edwardsummey8843 i agree, but it is almost unanimously agreed by any tau player or lore experts that tau AREN'T space communist, it's a old meme that tau players try to eradicate since the very beginning of the tau and that is continuously propagated even if everything about the tau society is completely against communism, communism isn't the only form of government that follow a greater good principle, it's just the most know.
@@kalzhae I will counter that the Tau are as Communist as the Imperium is Fascist.
@@edwardsummey8843 their is some common ground with Communism, but just reducing tau to Communism or Imperium to fascisme is so wrong, every government in 40k is a mismatch of multiple kind of government anyway, but i can assure you that tau is mainly communism is wrong, the whole structure of the tau society is a complete opposite if not completely impossible within a communist government, tau have a rigid system of 5 cast, each one specialized in one field and with no possibility to move from one cast to the other. in that sense it's actually an almost perfect replica of standard old imperialism where if you were born in a cast you'i stay in it until death. that is actually something that is completely against the backbones of the communist doctrine.
If you want to know more about how space marines are recruited and trained, I highly recommend the book "Dante" by Guy Haley.

To really give you a good effect of continuing colonization and also destruction the imperial guard has trillions of soldier in service however the average lifespan of a guardsmen is i believe about 8 hours
i may be wrong but i'm pretty sure that 40k is the biggest sci-fi universe right now, and one of if not the biggest universe ever created independently of the type of universes
Ya it kind raises more questions but honestly it’s the way the lore is it’s so vast and interconnected with itself that anything you watch while informative will also raise more questions
Imo this video is great not for answering those questions but for setting the stage and getting you hooked into the universe and wanting to learn more
As for your question of why they can be so advanced and yet rely on such outdated methods that goes all into their history of advancement war and declining that’s way too long to get into in a single comment lol

We can try.
Humanity got a golden âge on the milky way. Collapsed because of AI rebellion. Rose again by the will of the emperor. Collapsed due to betrayal and heresy. Is now trying to survive ancient and new aliens trying to regain control of the galaxy.
& everything looks ancient and futuristic at the same time because the imperium relies mostly on its old technology that it’s been able to maintain throughout the millennia with most of them being too afraid of repeating the past mistakes to create any new technology
@@hunterwaguespack3963
Then that idea got distorted and now the believe that all knowledge and technology has already been discovered and you just have to find it instead of making your own way. Which is now heretical.

Warhammer 40k Lore - Space Marines, Gene-seed and Organ Implants 🗣 GrimDark Narrator
here's a short version of what make up a Space Marine
a SM is chosen at a young age and thrust into relentless training and survival tests, the objective is to weed out the weak no matter the cost
once a child has proven himself to be capable, he'll then be introduced into a Scout Marine squad in the chapter where he'll work along side other recruits and some veterans, learning the essentials of SM tactics and mindset
if he survived long enough in the Scout Marine, then he'll be judged and if he's chosen, he'll become a Space Marine
The process of creating a SM is a grueling and painful one.
Whereas if most of the weapons found on a 40K battlefield hit a normal human you're lucky if you can find a pair of smoking boots.
Your trip down the rabbit hole has just begone. Warhammer 40k is very complex and deep. This is a game with very deep lore.
Overwhelming...yes. Cool....yes.

@Troy neenan no worries, already on my list :)
Glad to see more people interested in Warhammer, it’s a rabbit hole from here!
That would be a good way to get acquainted with the universe and lore using something you're already familiar with ;7
I love these genuine reaction videos, especially about warhammer 40k
Helsreach is an insanely good Warhammer 40K series well worth reacting to.
No worries, already on my list :)
The planet destroying thing is often not called for, but there are enemies in the 40K universe that if a single one of them were to arrive to another planet that planet would be doomed as well, rapidly destroying entire systems if not checked immediately - so sometimes destroying an entire planet is by far the lesser evil.
Watch space Marines to tell you how they are made by lutein09
To answer your last question. There is a animated story called hellsreach it shows how the space Marines think and act. One thing to know that 90% brought into the space marine die during the transformation and training to become an space marine
I'd recommend watchin 40k law by arch Warhammer he has loads of bids on many different things to do with the law lol
Welcome to the rabbit hole. I'd recommend he temple institute on the imperial guard, Nadia, and the emperor of mankind in that order.
The lore has been going on for decades.
React to Cadia as well as the emperor of mankind, both also by the templin institute.
On another note, you should watch british troops training with bayonets and the reports from iraq and afghanistan of them being used in combat.
Ill add them to my lists :)
In general, they tend to pretty focused on military tactics and stuff; they are well aware that their role is to crush the enemies of man and not do much else.
please react to 🔰Astra Militarum // Imperial Guard | Warhammer 40,000 🗣by Templin Institute
Ill add it to my list :)
@@peachbutt2330 if u can watch a 20-40 min video, watch Oculus Imperia. The pilgrimage to terra really exemplifies the grimdark
🤣 "Imperial Army. Imperial Guard. Astra Militarum. THE WALL OF GUNS!" 🤣🤣🤣🤣
There are many good lore videos on UA-cam and many good channels that put them out. Ultimately you have to decide which ones you prefer, for there is a flavor for every imaginable taste. Here are my 4 personal favorite channels I listen to. There are many, many, MANY more out there for your perusal. All you have to do is step into the rabbit hole.
Arch ua-cam.com/channels/hS9wazLlTUHSTeKVG39hZw.html -Exceptional lore videos. Many in the fandom hate him for his political leanings but listen to him and draw your own conclusions.
Baldemort's Guide to Warhammer ua-cam.com/channels/dpGd0jls7VQh6LvcZT_p1A.html -Very new to UA-cam but has many in-depth lore videos and is fun to listen to.
40K Theories ua-cam.com/channels/1EXMVGTvx_9e9JoMe1m5iw.html -Home to Remleiz. Great lore videos, theories, and "what-if" videos if things had unfolded slightly differently. Hosts a podcast called Adeptus Podcastus with fellow presentor Tactica Imperialis where they and a guest talk about lots of "stuff".
Bruva Alfabusa ua-cam.com/channels/miWoT3mqQMLFP9Hg420dsg.html -
If the Emperor had a Text-to-Speech Device. An animated show about The Emperor getting a text-to-speach device installed in the Golden Throne so he can once again communicate with his loyal caretakers, and complain at them. It is not necessary to have an in-depth knowledge of 40k to enjoy this content, but it helps, a lot.
Try watching the lore videos on Luten's channel and on Arch Warhammer's channels.
For chaos Marines they are just usually bat shit crazy and or filled with hatred and deep anger towards those of imperium space Marines and human alike
and then there's the malevolent marines or the flesh teares who are, collateral damage no such thing exist...
Why does everyone look like they're 8 ft tall
Because they are
The mindset of the Space Marines is often that of "I am going to die for the Emperor and the Imperium, sooner or later." The only way that they leave is feet-first.
40k? Go for arch. Be a LONG reaction vid, but it would be fun all round
Always good to see someone new come to the hobby and lore :)
I really dislike majorkill, mainly due to how he handle people that disagree with him, and how he goes out of his way to shit on other 40k youtubers.
He is just a ass for a laugh
The first video I ever saw of his was the one where he was shitting on One Mind Syndicate, Remliez and Arch. It didn't exactly endear me to him. I mean I know Arch goes too far some times, but I've never seen anything wrong with the others.
Space marine creation/recruitment by Luetin09 amazing explanation love you’re videos ❤️❤️❤️❤️
