      YES!!! I worked as a sound editor at Fox during the '80s. During my slow times I tried to find all the Lost in Space sound effects. I was never able to find the airlock door motor sound, and I wasn't able to find the clickety clack robot idle for his bubble top.
      But I did find the engine sound. It was labeled in the science fiction section as "Hickey's Spaceship.". No other information and certainly no data about what was used to create that sound. Even as a professional sound editor I've never been able to truly track down how they created that multitrack harmonic pitch progression for the engines, especially with the recording technology of the time. (I believe you can hear a little bit of that sound effect on the Outer Limits episode THE BOARDERLAND towards the end of that episode, when the power generators come online again.)
      But the thing to remember is that multitrack recording was in its very early infancy back then. Studios had three track magnetic film recorders for final dubbing, and the recording studios had half inch three-track tape. That was about it. And to create that layered sound required pitch adjustment and other techniques that I honestly don't know how they did back in that analog era was such primitive equipment. Nonetheless I think it's the most brilliant sound effect I've ever heard.

    As a kid, about 10 years old, this was just the most amazing and exciting thing on television, not just because of the fantastic sets and ( initially) the stories, for me, it was imagining myself as being one of the kids, in a SAUCER!!!, going into those sliding glass tunes, flying through space, the dangers and adventures of surviving on an alien world, tooling around in that wonderful family rv, so many drawings trying to create adventures of my own, this was the best, most exciting show for young impressionable minds

      Spot on analysis of the lis appeal for single digit kids, the wonder and adventure aspects.
      Of course once I was more than 10yo, the cheesy plots and dialog and bad science and physics wore thin. Luckily there was Trek and star Wars to move on to.
      But Lots of nostalgia for lis, and still appreciate the general production values and hardware and set designs

      Agreed. The first five episodes in particular are very good science fiction. I think the space ship crash in the third episode is actually better than the saucer crash in "Star Trek Generations". Too bad the show degenerated into Dr. Smith running around shouting "Help me! I'm turning into a carrot" just before he.....turned into a carrot. Or was it celery?

      You're not old! I was 6 years old when it premiered on tv. It was a great show with the exception of some really bad scripts, but I watched every episode anyway. I am a die hard fan and still watch it to this day. I did see watch the original LIS movie and enjoyed it, but anything after that, I refused to watch. For Christmas in 1968, I was surprised see that I got a styrofoam spaceship of the Jupiter 2 plus...an operational replica of the chariot. It was so cool! It was battery operated and rode along a plastic tubing it would travel on up to 25 feet. It came with plastic fittings that would allow it to do u-turns or whatever. My older brother and I were in one room, and my other two brothers were in a room across the hall. We would put notes inside the chariot and our brothers would send notes back to us. I wish my father didn't get rid of it when we moved. That would definitely be a collector's item today.

      @@davidpanetta6400 You must be referring to the Mattel Switch N'Go set. I wanted one but never got it. It wasn't a good replica of the J2 but when you're a kid, you don't care. That's because Jonathan Harris changed it. If you notice it was a much more serious show when it began, which centered around Guy Williams, the primary star at the time.
      Jonathan Harris wasn't satisfied with his limited "villain" role (he was scheduled to be kill off), so he rewrote the character. After that, most of the series centered around the adventures of Dr. Smith, Will Robinson and the robot. Most of the one-liners, and insults names for the robot Harris invented.

    The b&w version offers more dramatic atmosphere, bringing out that beautiful diffused lighting effect. It evokes Fritz Lang's Metropolis a little bit. I really love the look of those early shows; of what I like to call historical tv - breakthroughs in terms of the era. LOS, for ex., was just a couple of years after NASA's first manned orbit. Both early in the years of American tv and the space program.

    This beautiful cut what's the Gemini before it became Jupiter 2 it's so tight and perfect. I remember thinking June Lockhart had a beautiful figure and perfect makeup. In the pilot I believe John gave her a very long kiss as she stepped in the tube which I'm sure back in 1960 when was pretty racy. But it did establish that they were in love married and ready to go into space. I love when professor Robinson teases Will with a little fake punch.. a very Dad thing to do. Also when you think about the fact that the designer of the show decided to go with a flying saucer when we were just doing rockets at the time was ahead of its time... In the first episode with dr. Smith I remember Loving to see the second-level via the elevator... I love how you just by hitting buttons something on this ship would move pop out or activate. I felt as a kid this was a real spaceship because it looked real. John Williams scores are absolutely brilliant they build emotion and excitement but the sound effects of the engine is really amazing. I love the sound of Jupiter 2 makes when it's flying in space. The beautiful colorization gives it a beautiful nostalgic touch especially the gold and silver cryogenic units behind the freezing tubes. Also it's very interesting that the two chairs are not seen and that the panels for the controls flip inside out like a laptop. Because it's Gemini only was one deck I wonder where the Robinsons actually would have slept or ate on this one deck only ship. Second-level galley so well-designed and so were the staterooms although the beds look mattresses look mighty thin. I always wondered who slept with who And where does the bathroom actually exist on the Jupiter 2? The outside shot of the Gemini from the top looking down into the viewport is actually a beautiful shot not seen in the first episode. The ship in the meteor storm after this is my favorite scene.

    Mezzerised and transfixed this former 8 year old when Lost In Space first premiered in September 1965.
    All the while thinking I will be a old man of 40 when the Jupiter 2 lifts off in that faraway year of 1997.

    everyone was in suspended animation except for stowaway saboteur Dr. Smith and this is why his brain was affected and he started acting CRAZY.....

    If anyone asks why we don't see Dr. Smith and the Robot, it's because only the pilot without them was (recently) colorized thusfar.

    That would be the Gemini 12. The Jupiter 2 is the redesign and never took off from Earth (or even appeared in the famous crash sequence which was also the Gemini 12).

    A reboot should be considered whether tv or cinema

    Um...the Jupiter2 had no weapon turets. The best offensive weapon would be to throw Dr. Smith out of the craft with two hand lasers.

    Yet, we humans, are still a primitive space race, launching rockets & space planes and building tin can space stations. Why not build and launch a flying disc like that in lost in space.

    June Lockhart with false eyelashes and lipstick all the way to the Xenian galaxy...also if the ship was on auto pilot and everyone was frozen why did they need Major West?

    • @55Quirll
      @55Quirll 4 роки тому +4

      In case the ship went off course. Major West would have been woken up so as to put the ship back on course. Didn't work with Dr. Smith on board for some reason. In 'No Where to Hide' West was a Geologist I think.

    • @rickdj
      @rickdj 3 роки тому +6

      If you remember when Dr. Smith stowed away, the ship was calculated to the exact pounds of the ship weight plus the crew. Doctor Smith's weight was an extra 200 lb and by that plus the damage was caused buy the robot and Smith threw the ship off course. Also in the pilot episode Major West joked to the family and said... "If you wake up and see me driving, you know we're in trouble."
      In the original pilot episode when it was featured as the Gemini 12, it was a meteor shower collision which through the ship off course.

      Other useful answers aside, don't forget the ship was *_going_* to another planet on auto-pilot. After it *_gets there_* they're going to need a capable human pilot to figure out what to do next and how to do it. Do we land? Here? There? Do we call the whole thing a bust and go back to Earth?
